Magisk and Android 11 - Google Pixel 4 Questions & Answers

Hi, I'm interesed on android beta 11 but I have a lot of customizations root related in Android 10, (includes soli radar use and GSM doze, for example).
The question is Magisk Canary version works on 11? Or the better is wait for a update or android stable version?

Hi, root is working with the canary version of magisk. Most of the apps who needs root are working....( Titanium Backup,Adaway) The only app that isn t working for me is Swift installer for theming.....

Hi, can someone help me? I'm on the Pixel 4 Android 11 Beta, I installed the new Magisk manager (the Canary version I think?), and patched the boot image, but after flashing I'm stuck in the bootloader and I can't even turn off the phone anymore. Also, I saw 4 channels in the settings of the manager, stable, beta, canary and canary (debug), but I don't know which one to use and if it matters? Help is really appreciated!

It's really simple: you download the build from Google the build you have installed on your phone, unzip It, and unzip it again and again the archives inside the unzip folder until you see the boot.img
Copy this boot.img and paste to your internal storage, install the magisk Canary apk and select install magisk zip. Select "patch selected image" in the instalation metod, and select the boot.img copypasted before. Copy the new patched boot.img to your computer and flash to your phone via fastboot mode.

I get the problem when I try to flash patched boot img, I end up in the bootload with status 'no valid boot slot to boot'. Any hints?
Can anybody upload patched magisk boot img for pixel 4 .020 ?

I get the same error in beta2, I think must flash the same boot.img of the zip (patched, obviously) but this means clean flash (flash-all) every update and lost the data

Has anyone managed to root android 11 beta3? when I try to flash patched boot img, I end up in the bootload with status "no valid boot slot to boot".

Do you use Magisk Canary to patch?
You update via OTA or full flash?

I don't know why, but since beta 2 the method don't work. My pixel 4 fall in bootloop in the same way, and only fix flashing the OTA. Before, I think only work with full whipped beta installation and patch specific the boot.img of the full beta img flashed, but not tested yet

MAGISK root for sprint htc 10?

I have been using TWRP+SuperSU on my HTC 10 (sprint). However, I am not happy not being able to use Android Pay due to root. I searched and found a MAGISK root can do the trick.. I searched and was surprise to find not much of info on this variant.
I only found this: [ROOT] Magisk AutoRoot: Magisk + phh's SuperUser for Nougat (No TWRP required). But that's for the Unlocked version:
Prebuilt Boot Images:
US Unlocked: US_Unlocked_2.28.617.8_boot.zip
I assume I cannot use above boot image for Sprint variant. My question is, where to get this prebuilt boot image for Sprint?
I am on Android 7.0 (2.42.651.6).
Thanks!!

Thank you. I am following the guide you provided..
"If you're not rooted, or something went wrong and you need a clean start
(Recommended) Restore your boot image back to stock
Download the latest Magisk zip file
If you choose to use SuperSU (only support Android 6.0+), first flash SuperSU in systemless mode
Flash Magisk zip
Reboot, and update the stub Magisk Manager to the latest from Play Store

Try my post from the Bad Boyz ROM thread. I'm pretty sure that covers it all. If you're already RUU'd you can skip that part, but you will need to unlock your bootloader if you haven't already. I think that factory resets the phone. There's another thread on how to do that via HTCDev that should be stickied, but the process is easy.

Edit: I see you're already in the process on the other thread. Good luck!

No, you don't explicitly need recovery (TWRP) to install Magisk.
You do need recovery to install kernels or anything similar.
Magisk has a function that will patch the boot image file if you have a copy on the phone.
You can then copy that patched file to your computer and use fastboot to flash the patched boot image.
I have used that method before.

Well... Here's my take...
You know how to do that... Therefore YOU don't need recovery...
If someone with all the information available is still going to ask the question... Then THAT PERSON will NEED recovery...

Need patched boot file
Does anyone have a patched boot file for Magisk on Essential Phone for the latest Android P Beta? The Magisk app won't patch my boot image and won't tell me why. If I have the file from somewhere else I figure I can just flash that and be done with it. (New to XDA! )
Just install Magisk Manager, download latest pie fastboot zip from Developer Overview from Essential website and grab the boot img and patch it

Rooting OOS 10.3.1 without patched img file

I have been trying to root my device several times now using the patched img method, and all of the time it has ended up soft bricking my device.
I would really like to know how to install Magisk the proper way with TWRP installed.
Please help me out
Thank you
Install Magisk from the zip file in TWRP - you have to do tethered TWRP boot ("fastboot boot twrp.img" - the UEFI bootloader on OxygenOS 10.3.0 and later are fixed so Fastboot tethered boot works correctly now), then install TWRP the usual way from zip installer, and finally reboot back into recovery then install Magisk (also from zip installer).

Does using official TWRP work?
You may want to use unofficial version as it works better than official ones (the one at twrp.me is already way outdated).

Are you using a custom recovery? TWRP does not work with A11 yet.
Extract the boot image from a factory ZIP and flash it in bootloader:
Code:
fastboot flash boot "boot.img"
Then, boot TWRP:
Code:
fastboot boot "twrp.img"
And install Magisk using the canary zip. Please note that you do not use the quotation marks.
Alternatively, you can boot to TWRP and sideload the OTA, then reboot to bootloader, boot TWRP again, and install Magisk.

Your bootloader must be unlocked to use this method.
Start fresh, use the OTA or the factory image. I did this coming from Android 10 without wiping.
Download the Magisk Manager Canary APK and installer ZIP here
Download the latest TWRP image here, put it in your platform tools folder and rename to twrp.img
Using platform tools, reboot your phone into bootloader:
Code:
adb reboot bootloader
Then, boot (DO NOT INSTALL) TWRP:
Code:
fastboot boot twrp.img
Install the Magisk Canary ZIP, reboot to system.
Yes I am using canary latest, and did everything as you explaining, still getting bootloop. But I will get done sooner or later )

+1 on this method, worked for me, thank you for the instructions
I'm also bootlooping. Did you solve your problem?
I installed through the OTA button. Of course, I lost root, so I followed the above instructions, but am stuck at the G loading.
The canary zip is magisk-debug.zip, correct?
EDIT: I overlooked that I had EdXposed installed with active modules and I don't think it works with Android 11 yet, at least not the modules I use (Gravity box). I'll try rooting again tonight with EdXposed modules disabled.

Yes, both the apk and the zip are named "magisk_debug".
I am not sure why you are bootlooping. If you installed the OTA, it should have overwritten /boot with the stock image, and flashing Magisk Canary should work. It is possible that if you had modules enabled before and didn't disable them, you could have issues.

Anyone have luck downgrading from 11 to 10? I've tried several different 10 builds and I get "Error: Slot Unbootable: Load Error" in bootloader.
I used the same commands I always use to upgrade builds:

Root disappears after a while

Hi!
I'm on OnePlus 8 Pro IN2023 (OOS 11.0.1.1.IN11BA).
I can't hold my root after a while.
I did the whole rooting procedure (get the boot.img from the update zip, install magisk manager on phone (try different versions), patch the boot.img, boot into magisk_patched.img, install/update magisk, then reboot) and it succeed. But a couple of hours some apps crashed (fb, messenger, insta, etc.). Then reboot the phone, but stuck in bootloop... the only thing i can do is reset to factory settings (the root gone, the phone profile gone, the apps gone)
In magisk manager I tried the canary channel (does not work), I tried beta and stable channel, it work fine, but after reboot the bootloop is comming.
I have no idea what did I do wrong

I use this method:
"Rooting using fastboot commands
Method 1
Booting the patched image first
1. Obtain a patched boot img for your device variant preferably using payload dumper or download one of mine from the foot of this guide or if you've just performed the above guide you should already have a functional one, copy this file to your fastboot folder on your computer
**NOTE - Again the above suggested downloads are for the EU/ UK variant- if you have another model / firmware please use that instead, If you did not obtain the boot.img from a firmware and patch it yourself, you will need to patch it again in magisk manager, to avoid a bootloop
2. Reboot your phone to fastboot and connect to your computer.
3. Boot the magisk patched img
fastboot boot magisk_patched (or name of your patched boot img
4. Reboot your phone, your phone should now boot and you should now be rooted but we need to make this permanent.

6. Select Direct install (recommended)
7. Allow magisk to permanently root your device then click reboot.
You should now remain rooted."

I wouldn't do it that way...
When you boot magisk patched image. And get to system to confirm you boot fine
Reboot back into bootloader and
Fastboot flash boot_a magisk_patched.img
Fastboot flash boot_b magisk_patched.img
Fastboot reboot
That will permanently install the boot image.
Don't bother with the direct install on magisk app

If you are using lucky patcher, this is the cause. The symptoms you describe are the same. This app became harmful for 8 pro in a11. Causing apps to crash, detachment from gms services, and eventually bootloop. You lose root because of the factory reset. That is expected. Please confirm if this is the cause. I experienced this myself in a test environment.
