I'd hold off a bit. From previous experience the first release or two are unstable (crashes, excessive battery drain, etc) and functionality is poor. Unless you got some free time on your hands and just want to quick check it out, but I'd def anticipate downgrading back to 10. Once the initially one is out they churn out more stable releases fairly quickly.

1.066 OTA update

well i was flat out stunned that i got an update notification on my a500 today..... software 1.066
i cant find any info except for a single thread on the official acer forums in which 2 other people posted today they got this OTA update notice
seeing how the last OTA update borked my (and many others) screen auto-rotate functionality... i am going to hold off on downloading and installing this (i had to send it back to acer Two times to get them to fix this issue - software related.... and seeing how i am out of warranty even if this OTA caused problems ACER will not fix it for you even if it is their software problem like last time was)
i was hoping one of you brave souls had instlaled it and could tell me what it is.... seeing how its only 63mb im not expecting anything major

Honestly, what could Acer possibly have to offer that's better than the custom roms found here? With the latest Cm 10.2, bootloader 8 or 9,and a decent recovery, anything Acer could send OTA would be a downgrade. This thing is more stable than many newer devices with similar software. It's faster and more useful than the ipad I use at work. Who needs Acer?

Would be interesting to see what's in it. Vache put out a pc based update checker. Might be able to snag it to pc then decrypt, unzip, and see what's in it. Could be a prelude to an upcoming version update.
I got the update too and frankly I was very surprised. Of course it didn't install but I saved the file in case somebody is interested in seeing it.
No people know what this update about??
I didn't receive any OTA update notification.
My build number is Acer_AV041_A500_1.031.00_WW_GEN1
Image version is Acer_AV041_A500_RV03RC01_WW_GEN1

The link is posted in the Devs. section.
Will look at it when I return from vacation. In the meatime, there's a decrypt tool in Themes and Apps. Pretty simple. Then you can open it in winzipand see wwhat's there.
My guess is a maintenance update. Acer officially stated last year ics is as far as they go with 50x tab.
Thanks for posting.

Last night I went full stock in order to install the OTA just because I was curious like everybody else .... and honestly I didn't see any changes but the built number. The Android is still 4.0.3 with no noticeable changes. Maybe the updates they made were all under the hood.

When I went read the CM10.2 post, I saw some feature work, some not, with the problem of SOD. I'm still on full stock and didn't see this update, but I'm more interested in getting a very stable build instead of getting the latest version. What do you think the benefit is to get the latest CM10.2? Thanks.

Well, first, you're talking about Android 4.3, which Acer has not released for our device. Most benchmarks I've seen show better performance with the cm 10.2 variants than in 10.1, let alone the stock roms. Besides less bloat, more customization, and custom kernels, upgrading to a 4.3 ROM gets you new features not available in previous versions. As for stability, the first alpha builds of 4.3 I tried were already more stable than some 4.2.2 release candidates I tried.
I've used both of the 4.3 ROMs found in the forum here and they are both good.

I went to check the CM 10.2 post, and saw a lot reports on stability. I use my tab to read some websites, and not a lot others, I have a phone and a laptop for all others. All I want the tab is to turn on instantly when I push the power button so I can read when I want to, late in the night on bed, and even that can't be met. It just SODs.

An android 5.1 update is in the works, the third official beta can be found here. It is fairly bug-free (I typed this on it) but make sure to write down your iemi and be careful. It is still a beta. http://www.needrom.com/download/s3-lollipop-v5-1/
Ll beta is the best faster. I installed beta 3 I have to say I'm disappointed. WiFi is super slow and half the time its doesn't work. I'm thinking of reverting back to beta 2.

unlock bootloader and root or wait for 6.0 to do it?

so i was planning on doing this today, but then obviously when 6.0 comes out i can't take the OTA because of custom recovery so I'd have to wait for someone to make a flashable rom.
so what's everyone else doing? should I root now and enjoy it, or wait for 6.0 then root? no timetable from moto yet

Ota is not the only way pretty sure we will have images or someone grab ota and post zip
Sent from my XT1575 using Tapatalk
I'm waiting but mainly cuz I like this phone stock and I'm in no rush. Also I don't want to set everything back up so I will let marshmallow back it all up for me
You can always flash the stock ROM and take the OTA or wait a short time for a flashable version.

nah i know, like i do with my nexus 7 (haven't touched stock android in a while since my note 4 and samsung tabs, so i really don't remember)
so you guys think there's gonna be some good dev to atleast get a flashable 6.0 out? might as well just do it. just wanted to see the general opinion
I would do it now. Unlocking the boot loader will wipe your phone. Like someone said above a flashable zip should be available soon after the OTA touches down.

To be honest it doesn't take much skill to do. I'm sure we have plenty of people already here who know how
sweet. alrgiht just did it! woo rooty goodness.
I wonder when we will get marshmallow ota or rom based. Seems like zero development on this device which kind of sucks. I just want some omni or beanstalk. Not sure if the dev area is waiting on source or how a that works but I figured by now we'd have something to flash.

Good to hear, not bashing devs cuz I know I sure can't make a rom and appreciate the hard work that goes into it. I figured it was a source reason. Is that something moto needs to release or someone has to snag from the devices. I haven't flashed anything since the note 2 was release so just a little over eager I guess that and hearing people say devs might not be super keen here with the nexus coming soon.
LOL @ "zero development". This phone hasn't even been available for 3 weeks yet. If you ordered one on day one, you were lucky to get one 2 weeks ago.

Has Oreo officially been released on the 1+5? or are there any fully functional ROMs?

Hi all,
seems that the installation methods are a little different compared to the normal run of the mill installations which is normally required.
As im on custom ROM and always have been I'm not aware of what is available on stock.
Slightly hesitant to commit to installing if there is an impending official version.
cheers.
Yes, Oreo OOS 5 is official. There are plenty of threads on this particular subject.

Oreo has been released officially but yesterday they cancelled the rollout due to some unspecified bugs.
Anyway, it seems fairly stable and the there are some download links for the full ROM here: https://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=72799046&postcount=2

precisely what I was thinking, my thinking is I can upgrade but I'd be leaving behind some serious stability, stamina and performance. Not to mention that I don't know what does or doesn't work on Oreo.
I think it would make perfect sense to hold fire until it's official.

I could be wrong on this, but I think xposed won't work on Oreo. Most other apps shouldn't have any compatibility issues.
So far the overall experience of official Oreo OOS 5 seems to be a bit snappier and performs better than Nougat.

I don't care for xposed and until it's a final release I highly doubt it'll give the same stability I have right now.
Either way I won't be committing to Oreo until it's officially released and stably within custom ROMs.

Fair enough. It's hardly a secret that many users have experienced boot loop issues when upgrading to OOS 5.0, maybe that was the main reason why OnePlus decided to pull back the OTA. But loads of users have successfully flashed the rom and it stable as a daily driver, not to mention several users have already noticed a performance gain over the old Nougat rom.

that's kind of what I'm getting at, we need an officially released base which can be used without any odd Flashing instructions and only with bugs which would affect the device as expected.
ie: stock OOS should work fine, LOS and AOSP will more then likely have some issues, which is to be expected.
From what I've read, there has been another base released.

I agree completely. I refuse to use anything other than h2os now. I get such insane battery out of it but it seems to be on the back burner in terms of updates so i expect oreo to be a long ways out. Its cool there are open betas for it though but unfortunately the betas dont allow google apps. Side thought, it would be amazing to see some development for h2os.

How "Beta" Are The Open Betas?

For those of you who are on the Open Beta version of OOS, what has your experience been like?
Has anyone ever experienced bugs so severe that the software doesn't seem daily-driver worth?
I'm thinking of switching from Stock since the security patches are more up to date and updates in general are more frequent than Stock as well.
However, the word 'Beta' in the title does slightly concern me as I still would like to have an OS that I can rely on. I don't mind a few small bugs here and there, but nothing to the point that stops primary functions of my device (i.e. calls and sms).
Any insight would be appreciated, thanks in advance!
I used beta 8 and now I'm on beta 9. No issues.

They're not typical betas, all the significant bugs are worked out in their internal alpha testing, or whatever they can it in house. Basically pre-release of the official builds

They run a closed beta prior to releasing the open beta so most bugs are ironed out early
I've been on the open betas since OnePlus 3,now on 6T, never had any problems that I can think of.
The very early betas ,1,2,3 of a new Android version are the ones with bugs, the further you go,the less buggy it is.
Overall very stable now,no problem, you won't regret going to open beta
Appreciate your feedback guys! Its been all positive too so it seems like I will most likely be switching to Open Beta. Now I just need to find a day and time to dedicate the switchover as I've read it requires a clean flash :silly:
They are not that much of a beta
Beta is one step before a release most the time. In these situations there are not RC versions. But there are closed beta and alpha groups. One plus isn't as bleeding edge as they used to be in terms of software. The larger the money involved the further away from bloody edges people/corps get.
I can say the same as others in this thread. I'm always running the betas and they've all been solid for me! Running beta 9 with custom kernel and some magisk modules right now! ?
I use only Beta since..., OnePlus 3. Open beta are Awesome.

Using Beta 9 as my daily driver. No crashes. No unexpected reboots.
Used Beta 8 and the phone would be up for days.
I typically reboot every 3-4 days or after a lot of application updates.
Despite numerous issues posted in the beta threads I have never encountered an issue. I have had battery issues with Google Play Music but I really think its google's app that is causing the problem.
The Beta's are usually just as solid as any release ROM. I dont even consider them Beta to be honest with you. As soon as they come out I update. On Beta 9 right now and it is rock solid.

Appreciate the feedback! So what has the install process been like, coming from stock? I've been doing some reading and to my understanding, it's the following:
Factory reset in TWRP
Wipe data in TWRP*
Flash full OB9 zip
Flash TWRP zip
Reboot system
Reboot recovery
Flash Magisk
*Just not sure if it's wipe data or format data

When going from stock to beta, you actually don't have to wipe anything! It's nice, you won't lose your data. The same can't be said for the reverse though, that requires a format. Keep in mind, formatting userdata wipes EVERYTHING! Your pics, music, apps, everything.
Process for moving to beta to make it simpler.
Flash beta
Flash TWRP zip
Reboot to recovery (don't boot system yet.)
Install custom kernel (optional entirely)
Flash magisk (having TWRP means you NEED magisk to boot the device.)
Boot system!
???
Profit! [emoji6]
In fact beta are the latest stable with new options/features.

If primary functions of a phone are not stable, that should never called a "Beta" version. That is an "Alpha" version of software. Software is called "Beta" after the 2nd letter of the Greek alphabet. Meaning it is the 2nd generation of development. It is the final step before stable release. So while I can't say that you won't find some minor bugs, it would never be expected to find major issues in a true Beta version. All the issues that you are worried about should have been addressed in initial development or Alpha releases. You should continue to be aware and vigilant. But no need to worry that a Beta will be completely unworkable. Good luck!

I can say the same as others in this thread. I'm always running the betas and they've all been solid for me! Running beta 9 with custom kernel and some magisk modules right now!

How did you root the open beta 9? I just lost my root in the progress from tmobile to international version
you would be more likely to find bugs in a stable release of a custom rom.

Just flash Magisk from TWRP. I used Magisk beta! [emoji4]

You have to unlock the bootloader in .11 first. Once you do that, then you can do the open beta upgrade. I'm on a T-Mobile 6T and I'm currently on beta 9 with root.
