Advice Wanted: Unresponsive FingerPrint - OnePlus 6T Questions & Answers

Hello all,
I recently joined this community. I Received my OnePlus 6t after buying it used from swappa and I'm very excited to be hereafter upgrading from the OnePlus 3T. I can already tell this phone is already much quicker and has a much more active community. I've already indulged in unlocking, flashing the recovery, and using some custom ROMs. After testing CarbonRom and Pixen with an Open Beta base version and then Ancient Rom with a release version as the base version, I've had no luck with the fingerprint scanner being very responsive. I have also tried all the tips and tricks people recommend with the OnePlus 6T like: No screen protector, re-adding fingerprints in low light, different fingerprint animations, and more. None of the methods have been beneficial in my en-devours.
I'm writing this thread hoping to learn about some recommendations people have and if there are any custom ROMs that individually strive to make the fingerprint usage better. I'm not opposed to using a rooted stock ROM if it's the case that fingerprint is just broken on custom ROMs. Also, I would love to hear any tips/tricks that people may have.
EDIT: After reading more about FOD on the OnePlus 6T I tried Face Unlock on CrDroid. So far my experience has been great and I have found out by deleting all finger prints any biometric app I use, supports Face Unlock, which seems way more reliable.

I've never had great success with FOD on custom ROMs. OOS has always worked perfectly for me. Like you, I've tried various different methods of re-registering my FP but it's never been as consistent as stock.

Hi, thanks for the reply. Was there any one custom ROM that you felt handled FOD better than the others?

Hey I'm not sure if your situation is fixed, but I only fixed mine yesterday which is why I had never replied. Turned out for me doing a google cloud restore during initial setup was causing issues for me. I ended up using a 3rd party app to backup my data, did a clean install and then restored everything using the app again and my FOD is perfect now. I'm on Pixen OS and have zero fingerprint issues anymore, both thumbs work perfect each time.

Custom ROM or not?

This is a very unusual post for me but here we go:
I've been rooting, installing custom ROM's etc for about 6/7 years now, no phone has been saved from the rooting process but after the G4 plus I had failed I'm err'ing on the side of caution and after some questions answering with as definite an answer as possible to back up my own research:
I'm looking to install a LOS based rom (always been on CAM/LOS) and I'm wondering:
1, I use the NFC on this phone, does android pay work on an unlocked bootloader and a custom ROM?
2, What is the camera quality looking like on the custom ROM's?
3, I've briefly looked into the magisk thing in regards to banking apps etc, anyone had any joy getting them working?
4, finally, all Bluetooth working ok? I have the Moto 360 so need to ensure this works too.
Thanks in advance, like I said it's a rather unusual post for me but I just wanted to get some answers
Cheers guys and girls
Honestly I haven't even had the need to mess with the software on this thing yet. I'm getting insane battery life and great performance. Now later on the year I might go the custom ROM route but for right now it's pretty damn good stock. Very few things I miss from having root/ROM now
I'm at the same point to be fair, it's like an itch that needs scratching lol. Just missing the themes really more than anything.
Thank you for taking the time to reply
Bettry life and performance in stock rom is great and rom is near stock with some useful enhancement so i think atleast for me there is no need to install any custom rom.Battery life is insane in stock rom and you will not face any kind of issue in stock rom
My pixel and g5+ remain unrooted. I was in the same boat for previous phones (and tablets) and rooting them. At this point, I would have to struggle to think of a reason to root.

Most of the custom roms do not comes with root now a days sl
Android pay should work if you dont root
If you use camera a lot than you will not be satisfied with camera in custom roms
Bluetooth works fine
Again banking apps will not work if you root...
I tried pretty much every custom rom available for this phone. The camera on all of them is a bit iffy. Mostly trouble focusing (especially manual focus and macro shots). After manual focus, sometimes the camera will crash. This is the case for most roms.
I did have some bluetooth issues too. The phone connected to the car without any problems, but I couldn't make any phone calls. It wouldn't connect to the dialer to actually place the call.
I went back to the stock rom: rooted, Pixel launcher as system app so I have Google Now cards and flashed the mod that corrects the aggressive sharpening of pictures. Couldn't be happier. Really excellent phone.
Just an update for anyone in the same predicament.
I took the plunge as the itch got the better of me. I went for the AOSPExtended ROM. Here is some feedback thus far:
Camera: tried the stock camera and the google one. Autofocus is pretty much crap as reported. It's OK sometimes and not the next. Not had chance to try too many shots to be fair so can't give a comment on quality.
Bluetooth for android wear and connecting to a phone kit seems fine, I've not made any calls via the handsfree kit however.
Performance and battery seem OK. Nothing to really report there.
I have root via magisk and the magisk hide let's me use Android pay, Netflix and my banking app. They all previously picked up on the unlocked bootloader.
On the whole its not bad at all. Camera is a bit annoying however I'm sure it will be sorted soon. Verdict is out on if it i s worth the hassle or not yet.

Rom better than oos

Is there any rom out there better than stable in terms of performance and stability
I m not a frequent rom flasger so i want a person who can suggest the rom by his/her experience

Better? Probably not. Custom ROMs are about features. That said they can be just as 'Stable' and 'Perform' just as well in some, if not all, cases
A rom similar to stock would also do the job with no bugs
I gave up on custom ROMs once I got the op5. It feels like a phone with a stable custom ROM without the occasional bugs I always had with custom ROMs.
My second phone is an HTC one m8 with a custom ROM and despite picking a stable ROM it's having issues with installing new apps lately.
I've gotten tired of the custom ROM thing and just want a phone with a stock like OS that always works and I feel like I finally got that with stock oos

Yeah I've been flashing custom roms for almost ten years but I have no reason to do it on OP5.
Stock or open beta does the job for me.

I'm curious how the open betas are when it comes to bugs? Having updates faster would be nice but I like having a phone that just always works.

There's no difference between stable and open beta in terms of stability or bugs. Different/other features, but no bugs. Stability is the same.

Nope. Nothing can beat oxygen os. My advice, stick to oxygen os.
My setup -
Open beta 19.
Magisk 17.1 - adaway - Viper4android - youtube vanced - Google sans font - Google camera.
OOS for the win.

for now , I agree.
But in few years, when OP will drop OP5 support, this thread will be helpful.
Just like the OP1, I was looking for a stable nougat rom, and from what I read, even lineage wan'snt ''that stable''. I went for the SlimRom 7.x, but even that, some apps crashs.
Anyway, for the OP5, got with stock OOS rom, its updated to the latest (or almost) stable android version.
I don't know about it being the most stable...
Bluetooth has been broken for me for five months and seems with the release of 5.1.5 there's been a huge increase in the number of users complaining of Bluetooth problems on the OnePlus forums.
Contacting OnePlus support has been useless so I'm going to start trying custom roms in the hopes I will get working Bluetooth again.
On a previous phone (I can't remember if it was the LG G4 or Galaxy S4), there was a noticeable camera quality drop when you moved to a custom rom, do OP5 custom roms experience this behavior or can I still expect the same photo quality?
I have actually downloaded all the files (hopefully) that I will need to root the phone in another year or 2 when support is dropped and it gets way behind in updates.

Sounds awesome. I'm on Pixel Experience right now, but will definitely try this.
Can support this as well. While the Bluetooth issue sure sounds like a bummer I'd really try to get OOS working.
I went to using custom roms shortly after getting the phone as well, since it was always the superior option with my previous phones, but stock is really just damn good, hands down.
With all the good the things about this phone, the software is definitely the best imo

I've never noticed any Bluetooth issues with mine in the year I've had it so far. It's stock, never even rooted it. Only ota updates and it's never been factory wiped yet. So it's obviously not affecting everyone. I haven't noticed any posts about it on here but I haven't been on OnePlus forums in a long time.

My wife and I actually went from having occassional bluetooth issues connecting to our cars to it being rock solid a while back, probably the same update. Bluetooth between cars and phones has always been a mess in my experience, I've always assumed the cars aren't following the BT standards properly so the device manufacturers have to play around trying to find the balance between which cars to get working and which might break.

I drive a 1984 car so my Bluetooth is only really used with my tile keychain so I can't lose my phone or keys and occasionally for music but I usually use the headphone jack plugged directly into my stereo for better sound quality.
Even the work trucks I drive don't have Bluetooth (2005 and 2013 Silverado).

I tried Every rom but at the end i came back to oos Every time...
No reason to change
Unpopular opinion here but I really like PixenOS more than OOS.

For me the main reason to switch to LOS is the system profiles. I haven't found a similar simple solution to activate a hotspot when my OP5 connects to my Car Radio.
I guess you can do the same with Tasker, but it seems much easier to me to just use the system profiles in LOS.

What custom rom are you using?

I am a bit of a custom rom enthusiast and i have found it rather confusing with the 6t thanks to the weird fingerprint scanner, unclear instructions, weirdly cut display corners ( a few of the custom roms i got booted into had weird pixelation around the corners) , the AB thing, ect. So what are you using, and how did you get it running?

I'm on stock+No Limits xXx Magisk "ROM". I've been an avid flasher since 2008, but not so much nowadays. In my opinion, no custom ROM comes close to stock OOS, mainly due to navigation gestures, pixels around the corners and fingerprint scanner. As for the flashing instructions, I'm not sure if even the devs know a proper way to flash our A/B 6T. Some instructions work for some, but don't for other and the other way around, it's a hit & miss really.
Initially I tried theoneos, then tried liquid remix, finally settled on havoc.
I've been flashing phone a very long time. Flashing this phone has been a little bit of a learning curve with the a/b slots, but nothing too crazy.

Questions about moving over to the Offical Pixel Experience(Simple/Plus) ROM?

Im planning to move to pixel experience plus for my daily driver lavender phone, but i need to be 100% sure that there wont be any bugs or features missing?
To the people who are using Pixel Experience ROM permanently...is there anything that you lose when you move over to Pixel Experience from Stock MIUI?
If you are going to use it as a daily driver, the current PE Plus is more than enough for it, it have everything working, not the best but it does have a good SOT and Battery backup. Thing you lose compared to stock I guess will be the navigation gestures of MIUI, cuz PE Plus have the screenshot gesture (3 fingers slide), maybe the built-in App-block and of course the stock camera. But anything else than that, if you like Pixel Feel, then the ROM will be good for you for daily basics. Bugs they might happens but just minors things as it's a ROM being maintained you will be getting updates really quick.

Moved over to it yesterday after i posted this question and im loving it, you're right the SOT is way better than MIUI and just the snappiness is amazing, im using fluid gestures which brings back those nav gestures and is customizable so better than stock again!
For camera im using both ANXCamera and Gcam. Overall nothing of value is lost by switching over except i have to manually switch off my screen during calls coz the proximity sensor isnt working for some reason.
So if anyone reading this who's scared to move over, just do it. And if you're worried netflix and other services wont work, magisk has you covered

Yes I do use GCAM and ANXCamera too, also for PE Plus Magisk is always welcome, but for overall use the rom is very fluid and stable. About the proximity, is not about the ROM is RN7, somehow this sensor might fail or might work randomssly, just reboot till it work again, or some others recommend some calibration app, I don't remember the name but you can search in the PE Thread. enjoy the rom :good:

@LordBuckshot Try turning on the 'Pocket detection' option in 'Settings' > 'Display' if your ROM has it. Restart your phone to see if it helps. This trick works for many users.

May I ask, what version of ANX you are using since, portrait mode is not working even with that fix. Thanks.

Any downsides to flashing a Stock Android ROM?

I bought a Mi 9T for around 220€ a few days ago, and although I love it so far, I can't stand MIUI. Delayed notifications, user tracking, bloatware, and so on...
I started the 168hr countdown on Sunday and I plan on unlocking the bootloader and flashing Pixel Experience next weekend.
However, I want to know if there are some features that stop working or work less well on a custom ROM. Most of all, the camera and the fingerprint scanner. Everything working alright? I know that some ROMs, on some phones, were affecting photo quality and performance. Anything like that on the Mi 9T?
Cheers!

Did you check in the ROM section, thread devoted to Pixel Experience.
Also, it would be IMO more logical to expect useful answers there, among the users of the particular ROM.
Sorry if it doesn't help
Thanks for the answer.
I don't mean any downsides to installing Pixel Experience specifically, but any ROM not based on MIUI
Can't speak for other ROMs, but with PE, things are mostly fine, including the camera. Battery seems better with an extra 1 hour screen on over 2 days usage. Except for the fingerprint scanner. On the current build, the recognition is great (no worse than on MIUI!), but fod does not work when screen is off or on AOD. However, a patch may come later this week or the next, fixing the fod on AOD.

"recognition is great (not worse than on MIUI"?!
- On MIUI is next to totally useless (or even without that "nextt")
"fod does not work when screen is off or on AOD"
- What is the use of fingerprint if it doesn't work when phone was resting (hence the screen turned off or went to AOD), I eg receive mail or WA message and want to read/reply, but fingerprint cannot unlock the screen

In my experience with aosp roms:
*Bluetooth audio don't resume music if a call enters
*Fingerprint recognition is far better on miui (depends on the rom, but imo miui is much better than any aosp)
*Instagram stories doesn't upload long videos (15sec +)
*Sometimes microphone is not activated on video calls (messenger, WhatsApp, duo)
*Android auto not working (except on PE and PE based roms)
