I'm currently sitting on the stock 6.0.1 B29 ROM for my 2017U A7, which is BL unlocked, rooted (SU 2.79-SR2), Xposed, with RootSwitch working, and TWRP.
What's the most simply way for me to upgrade to Nougat while maintaining those things listed above (aside from Xposed which I know doesn't support Nougat yet)?
Would I be forced to wipe my phone after installing Nougat in order to get everything working optimally?
Are there any issues or potential problems when upgrading that I should be aware of?

I have seen this thread: https://forum.xda-developers.com/axon-7/development/edl-emergency-dl-mode-twrp-unlock-t3553514
But I was wondering there was a more simple or directly method which doesn't involve EDL mode?
Edit: Nevermind, I don't know why I was expecting a more simple method, nothing on the A7 is more straightforward than that. I'd still like to know if I should be expecting any issues and if a full wipe is needed. For that matter will my phone be wiped anyway if I install that ROM?

I don't see any reason that you couldn't flash the universal bootstack and modem for the U variant from the Lineage thread, and then flash the stock Nougat ROM that's posted in the BadBoyz Magisk thread. Or just flash the bootstack and modem, then flash that ROM, being that it's stock and should still allow you to pass SafetyNet.

I would assume that it'd overwrite TWRP and I'd have to reinstall that again, and considering all the steps overall, that's not really any faster than jcadduono's EDL mode method.
Basically I was hoping there was a method that could just allow one package to be directly flashed and get it all done in one simple go to prevent any possible mistakes.
I said screw and installed the necessary program and drivers to flash the package with the Nougat bootloader + ROM + TWRP in EDL mode, it appears to detect properly, but I don't know if I want to go through with it until Xposed arrives. Between YouTube ads or grinding my face with a belt sander, I think the latter is less painful and horrific.
On the topic of SafetyNet, I currently pass it if I switch root off, yet Nintendo games won't install on my phone. They show as "incompatible with your device" the same as if they detect I have root. I have SUHide installed as well, but I have no idea how to check on that (where it is or how it functions for that matter). Installing the APKs from an alternate source just results in them crashing on start-up. Nintendo REALLY don't want root users playing any of their games.

But I don't know if I can just do that with jcadduono's package because IIRC TWRP doesn't automatically install things to where they should be, you have to manually select it (recovery, etc) and that package needs to be installed to multiple locations. Or maybe I have no idea what I'm talking about it.

Have been able to play Pokemon Go (my son, lol) and Fire Emblem on several Lineage based ROMs using Magisk. Can also get Android Pay to work (except for my bank currently not supporting it, but it doesn't show that I'm running any third party ROM or have my bootloader unlocked.) So, that might be the way for you to go, if you decide to try it out. As far as the EDL method, I've never tried it, but it does seem like an extremely useful tool.
Sorry went back and edited my post. It seems I was mistaken and I'd have to at least flash 2 packages by the EDL method, the TWRP package isn't the full ROM, just the bootloader and recovery. The only thing I can get working is Pokemon Go if I switch off root. Is Magisk working on the stock Nougat ROM as well?
Hi all,
After a few years with the O+1 here I am with the O+5 and I'm pretty happy with it !
But after a few days I already miss the root functionnality...
Could you please tell me what is my best option to get root and still pass Safety Net (yes I still play Pokemon Go) ?
I heard Magisk is my best option but it has been a long time since my last flash so I would really like some confirmations about real users like you guys !
PS: Can I flash the Magisk thing on OxygenOS right after unlocked the bootloader or do I need some extra steps like a custom recovery (TWRP ?) or anything else ?
Thanks !
I think you need TWRP first off all. Just flash TWRP recovery img via ADB. Once in TWRP move the stable version of Magisk( v14) to TWRP from PC. Flash Magisk in TWRP reboot device and your good to go.
Or do it my "complicated" way LoL:
1. Install TWRP via Fastboot/ADB
2. Wipe all and format data
3. Reboot in TWRP recovery
4. Move the "full" latest flashable stock OOS to TWRP via PC (can be found and downloaded from official OP5 site or here on XDA)
5. Move latest stable Magisk v14 to TWRP
6. Flash Firmware along with Magisk
7. When you finish the Tap and Go settings, reboot again to recovery
8. "Maybe" the TWRP recovery is replaced by stock recovery due to flashing official OOS
9. Just simply flash TWRP again via Fastboot ADB and Magisk and than you are "definitely" good to go!
I flashed xxxNo Limits ROM and used magisk and safety net is working
Use freedom os.
Freedom OS is much better xXx has too many bugs. Dont think the guy tuned anything
I tried Freedom and xXx No Limits and I prefer stock OOS with a custom kernel (Blu Spark) to either of them. I did read that there was a way to flash Magisk and keep the stock recovery (which allows you to install OTAs normally) but I didn't really understand it. Blu Spark TWRP actually works better than the official build and is updated far more often. I would recommend running stock with a good custom kernel for a little while before flashing a custom ROM. A lot of people flash a custom ROM as soon as they get the phone so they have no way to even judge if the ROM they are on performs as well as stock OOS. In terms of just performance I haven't found anything so far that beats stock OOS with the Blu Spark kernel.
Thanks for all replies !
I came from Resurection Remix on a O+1 but I want to give a try to OOS so I will only unlock the bootloader + flash TWRP + flash Magisk
I will see in a few weeks if I miss some functionnalities and need to flash a custom ROM
just flash magisk on top of OOS and install the magisk manager app, bypass safetynet and have root
My device is due soon and been going through the forum preparing myself. I am a bit confused though and would appreciate some help.
1- TWRP
From my other devices N5, 5T etc flash TWRP and you're on your way.
With this device it's Fastboot boot into regular TWRP wipe, then into deadman's TWRP to install ROM. Other instructions mention going into partition A then to B. Is permanent TWRP install not suitable for this device?
2-Root & Magsik
It seems that everything on this device is dependent on using Magsik for one thing or the other. I prefer to use SU as it always works with my setup. I'm not interested in safetynet. Do i really need to use Magsik?
After ROM install I use Xposed, SU, Xprivacy Lua, Titanium pro, Tasker.
Thanks.

Can this be done on this device?
Of course

I found this for you, hope it provides some info, also try forcing Google to give you results with kws like "SuperSU" and "su" by placing them inside quotes "" and by adding a + in front of a keyword.
https://forum.xda-developers.com/mi-a1/how-to/cf-auto-root-september-update-t3681024
1. You can Install TWRP permanently
As there is no separate recovery partition
fastboot flash recovery recoveryname.img command will fail
So you need to temporarily boot your phone to TWRP first n then make it permanent (Optional)
2. You can use SuperSu, technically there shouldn't be any problem as bothe Magisk and SuperSu patches Boot Image (haven't tested though)
Thank you for your replies.
Managed to install TWRP and decided to stick with stock for now, but install of Xposed fails. Now looking to solve that.
Bought this device because it was cheap. If Xposed install fails will return it.
I have made a guide to simplify the installation procedure: https://forum.xda-developers.com/mi-a1/how-to/lineageos-gapps-magisk-twrp-dolbyatmos-t3762939/
If you want to stay on stock, you can skip the LineageOS related stuff.
Thread cleaned
Lets be honest, this is a development site, lets keep the racism out of here.

I know you don't want to install Magisk, but you can install Xposed with Magisk without any issues
So I've read a bunch of stuff and everything I've read tells me to do the same thing that I've already done. Also those thread seemed pretty old so....
Anyway I need a stock backup so I can perform OTA update but I don't have one. this is what I did
I used msmtool to start over
pushed through setup
unlocked bootloader switch in developer settings
unlocked bootloader in fastboot
updated android
fastboot boot twrp.img
wiped everything
flashed magisk.zip
(I didn't install TWRP because I am under the impression I can't pass safteynet with a custom recovery am I wrong about this?)
installed magisk.apk
So what step am I missing to save the stock backup so I can uninstall magisk for OTAs?
I had a Pixel for 3 years that had a broken fastboot and so I couldn't unlock the bootloader and never got to learn about the new AB partitioning until now. so I'm a little behind
Thanks

Unlocking the bootloader can make you fail safety net, much less Magisk if its not set up right. The recovery wont matter.
My guide here is for installing Lineage, however Step 5 will work for OOS too and make you pass safety net. So feel free to install TWRP.
I recommend Funk Wizards Guide on installing TWRP. Also note the section on EFS backups.
Look into TWRP backups, I dont use them, but I know its not straight forward unfortunately.
So when I'm flashing the magisk file in TWRP, does it save a copy of the image it's modifying? And where does it save that image? Also where should i put that image so I can uninstall-> Restore Images?
I want to root my phone due to its huge benefits but also at the same time I want to keep my OTAs
Is it possible even if I will install them manually (but the data remains with no wipe) ?
And if so, how can I do this and whats the best way?
Thanks in advance and sorry if the language was bad <3

Yes it's possible with a little workaround, to temporarily switch to stock Recovery (from TWRP, if you had it installed) and to stock Boot (from the one patched by Magisk) during the OTA upgrade - OTA will fail if it finds not the stock images of Recovery and Boot
After the upgrade you just flash the new Boot patched by Magisk (and flash TWRP if you will)
Or you flash TWRP and flash Magisk from TWRP
Below is a post how I recently upgraded from QFJEUXM 12.0.2 to 12.0.3. Btw, I downloaded zip and initiated OTA manually because I didn't want to wait more days to be pushed for OTA, but that's just a small detail not important for the way how to do it:
https://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=83791185&postcount=93
Ofc, all my data, apps, settings, and Magisk modules were preserved
Generally, in the Redmi K20/Mi 9T Guides section on XDA you can find (at least two) threads about how-to root, i.e. install Magisk
Those threads describe the way to install Magisk by installing Magisk Manager, patching the Boot image, then flashing it from Fastboot (I prefer that way).
In that case TWRP is not needed (but it can be also installled)
Threads and guides are maybe old (since MIUI 11) but it doesn't matter, it's always the same method (essentially the same as in my post I gave you the link above, its part about returning back to Magisk after the OTA upgrade)
If you follow those guides you must pay attention that you patch the boot.img for exactly that (new) stock MIUI you do have and that you now use new Magisk (not some old versions as in the guides)
Alternatively, you flash TWRP by Fastboot, then flash Magisk zip from TWRP and then you install Magisk Manager
All those methods are described in other threads and posts.
Anyway, you must first unlock the Bootloader, again there is thread with a guide, or just google for how to unlock Bootloader on Xiaomi
Btw, some custom TWRP versions and Orange Fox do have Advanced options for upgrading MIUI and to keep Magisk, but when I did it that way for upgrading from QFJEUXM 11.0.5 to 12.0.2, it made me Factory reset and I lost all my files on Internal memory (it was generally an issue for the others who upgraded from MIUI 11 to MIUI 12 by flashing OTA through custom recovery)
Hence now for upgrading to 12.0.3 I didn't want to risk and did it as above

My last time with root was about 3 years ago with king root on Mi A1 and I didn't care about updates then
so it's my very first time with magisk and TWRP and that stuff
Could u tell me what is the best method of u mentioned to keep my files and everything with no delete and also makes me able to upgrade Official ROM with no deletes
After this i'll start digging to learn but I want to know what should I dig for
Thanks bro

bro I can`t really thank u enough for the effort
as I got it:
1- Unlock bootloader
2- Install TWRP (the version u provided)
3- Install Magisk (last link u provided) right?
Is there any step of those that is risky or unsafe that may brick the phone ?
PS: On mi unlock application it says all phone data will be erased !
what should I do ?
By unlocking Xiaomi phone you won't lose anything but previous user data stored in phone, unlike ASUS phone losts OTA permanentry.
So make a backup, also I recommend you first picking your secondaly phone, not your daily using one.

As described, TWRP is optional, not needed for Magisk/root but it would be useful to have, so yes, install TWRP
Instructions for unlocking Bootloader say to do Backup. Copy photos and files from Internal memory to PC.
Export contacts to CVS file and also copy to PC.
Backup to Google your Google accounts, contacts, WhatsApp, etc.
Use Settings, Additional settings, Backup, and cooy to PC.
You can also use Settings, MIUI account to backup things
Installations of Magisk and TWRP will not erase data. Generally, they are not risky unless you make really stupid mistake like flashing TWRP img file to System partition instead of to Recovery partition and so - that's why you have instructions how to use Fastboot command to flash TWRP
It's more risky if you go to use e.g. MiFlash (you don't need for TWRP and Magisk), then people can screw up things and need authorized EDL support
