Quick question - a friend and I both bought some Fire HD 10 2017 models on teh recent Amazon price reduction. Been doing the system updates, and both got OS updates to an earlier version.
Anyone got an idea why this has happened? Amazon say current version is 5.6.6.0

Some amazon dev was high when they posted the FIreOS version numbers???
Amazon has messed up the FireOS version numbers, they no longer follow sequentially. 5.3.7.1 is the latest version.

Amazon OTA updates doesn't contain any security updates, bug fixes, preview builds, and stable builds.
Don't update your Fire tablet. You can make a greater risk to security threats and viruses, and also remove any certain features.
Make sure your Fire tablet is stay offline to prevent updating your Fire tablet.

Despite my attempts to block the OTA update, my fire now has 5.3.2. It definitely lags compared to the previous firmware version. Does anyone known if it can be downgraded via ABD without bricking?

I have read and was able to downgrade my 2015 Fire HD 7 from 5.3.2.0 to 5.3.1.0. Then I was able to install a CM Rom.
I also have the new HD 8 2016, but I am not sure if the downgrade will work.
Just bought a the HD 8 2016 since it is on sale (today) for $59 at Best Buy and THOUGHT I read it can be rooted, later learned it's only the older model that can be rooted. Really don't want an Android device that will remain unable to be rooted, so, might have to take it back even at that cheap price?
Would love to have a custom ROM on this tablet!

I bought it knowing that it can't be rooted at the moment. But I'm going to block updates with openDNS and cross my fingers for a future root method. Still a pretty good tablet for the money and the Play Store works too. However, I still love my cheap, year-old Fire 7" with CM 12.1 the most despite the screen resolution.
What steps are required to block updates with openDNS? Would like to try it on Fire 8, 6th gen.

I used this method for my Fire TVs, and it appears to work on the Fire tabs too.

Thanks. Looks like this could work on devices that don't leave home network.
Hopefully this Fire HD 8 tablet 6th generation - 2016 can be rooted in near future. Better to block the OTA updates. By the way, can someone pin-point the codename for this device ? That is similar to KFFOWI_Ford for 7'' Fire-2015.

As I was trying KingRoot today it said the code for this one is "KFGIWI"
And I also saw another thread that stated KFGIWI_GI
A contributor is reporting that his tablet has updated to Fire OS 5.3.3.0.

Reply here if/when your devices update, and what you notice about 5.3.3.0.
As of yet, it's not listed on the Download Page for the Fire 5th Gen, but you can download the Source Code for 5.3.3.0 on the Fire 5th Gen.
I've been checking everyday for a week or more, and haven't seen it download yet. I tried a factory reset, and it downloaded everything else, but those were all minor app updates.

Early rollouts typically target specific serial numbers. Reset all you want; the update will only come when Amazon decides it's ready.
I've 5 tablets with cracked screens which I bought as part of a job lot for testing and repair. Had my router blocking updates. I've just disabled that and checked for the update and it's come through for one of the 5 tablets.
It would appear Davey is right the update is coming through based on Serial number rather than region as I thought it might.
Going to test to see if it can be rooted.

As I was updating my DNS to block updates from amazon. when my fire got updated to 5.3.3.0.
Put DNS block in place. Should keep me on 5.3.3.0
FireOs 5.3.3 Release Notes:
* Low Power mode - Optimize your device's display settings to conserve power. The mode turns off automatically when your Fire is charging.
.
I have Google Apps (Google Play, Chrome, Youtube), Nova Launcher and Launcher Hijack working on it.
Kingroot fails a little after %60
Unable to root so far. Will try every couple of days. It'll be interesting to compare the boot files of the OS image to that of the previous release.
Hopefully they've the same build value and a downgrade is possible if in the event 5.3.2.1 is rooted first.
My 2016 HD 8 received the update Sunday morning the 19th. Havent noticed anything new, except it may be a slight bit snappier. I did have to log into amazon and turn off lock screen ads even though my Fire was purchased with the no ads option. Doesnt seem to have affcted play store or any of my downloaded apps.
One out of two updated here today.
flic.kr/p/RZuWuz
If someone can get the file before it installs, could they upload it somewhere and link it here?
Sent from my Amazon Fire using XDA Labs
My Fire 7 with 5.3.3.0 does seem a bit snappier as well. I can't wait for my 2016 HD 8 to get the update since it seems so sluggish to me.
I got a notification on the Fire 7 this morning suggesting that I uninstall Kingroot as it might damage my device. Anyone else get a message like this? Is Kingroot potentially damaging?
Mine updated to 5.3.3.0 early this AM. Usually mine's one of the last to get the update so hopefully, a lot of you will be getting it today.

KingRoot is borderline crapware that we use simply because there are no other alternatives. As for 'damaging' depends on your definition. Hardware - no. Capturing personal information and potentially interfering with the operation of other apps - your call.
I haven't been sent the update yet for my Fire 7, 5th Generation. I am correct to assume the files on the source code page aren't the actual files I can download to manually install the update?

Overall touch response and entering/exiting apps. It feels smoother and just a bit more responsive to overall usability.

Title states "Fire HD 7” but that model was discontinued years ago. Guessing you have a 7th gen Fire 7 which runs a version of FireOS based on Android 5.1.
Unfortunately, Amazon has crippled the notification mechanism in FireOS. Some work; many do not. You will need to root/unlock and install a custom ROM to restore full functionality. From a time/effort perspective it would be more efficient to purchase a different tablet that runs vanilla Android out of the box. Walmart sells a few varients; the $64 (US) ONN 8" is an attractive alternative.

Do you have to modify the framework-res.apk (Android System) on your rooted Fire 7 2019 to work the pushes and appear the notifications on Pushbullet
Can you find the files on decompiled framework-res.apk
Code:
/res/values/bools.xml
Find the code, replace false with true
Code:
<bool name="config_smsCapable">true</bool>
<bool name="config_voiceCapable>true</bool>
Amazon announced a new Fire 7 (12th Gen, 2022) released on June 29, it comes with a new Fire OS 8 (based on Android 11) and it has a 2 GHz quad-core processor and a 2 GB of RAM. It is still hackable with @Datastream33's Fire toolbox or ADB? And Google services still works?

Lucky for us, the commands the Toolbox uses should work on Android 11 as well (some tools may need to be tweaked a little bit). It's just of matter of what restrictions the OS has on launch. They've been cracking down lately so it will be interesting to see. But, I doubt they'd block ADB as that means app developers would have a hard time coding apps for the Amazon platform.
anyone attempt root? i know i can pull stock rom with SPflash for boot img for magisk but is the bootloader unlockable
I'm game to attempt it. Haven't opened or registered yet. Was going to run through toolbox testing.
How would you even go about it given the new Fire OS 8 and typically hardware locks on bootloader?

I just got the amazon fire tablet 7 (12th generation)
I was able to get google play store installed with tool box and remove the lock screen ads. I also disabled a lot of things in the settings to help speed up the tablet. I ran into issues getting a launcher to work but I found an app called one button navigation that puts an overlay over top of the fire tablets buttons and then I set the overlay to send me back to my launchers home screen. I found Niagara to be the fastest launcher. I also was successful at disabling all the amazon bloatware
I am pretty happy with the results but I still would like to root the tablet to get a real launcher support, I also would like to change the home button to something more fluid and not just an overlay. Possibly see if there's any more settings I can tweet with root access to increase the speed a bit as well. Has anyone been successful at rooting this device?
I got the kids the new 7" Amazon tablet for Christmas 2022
It's pretty slowly probably lots of bloat, would love to get normal android on it... Is this theoretically possible as I want to use family link to lock apps/time limits down.
Can someone please explain to me what people mean when they mention "burning fuses on update" with regard to the Fire 10, 11th Gen? I have never heard the term with regard to Android or device updates.

i have only heard that they did this on firestick4k to block the mediatek access to the bootrom. But this should explain it...
Amazon blows eFuse on Fire TV Stick to prevent downgrading to old interface
The new Fire TV interface is currently rolling out to most Fire TV models via the latest operating system update. While there has never been an official way to roll back a Fire TV software update, Amazon seems to especially want the new interface update to be a one-way path.

Amazon pretty much uses the same for both tablets and their fire tv stuff. I don't think there are any efuses blown on the tablets, but they removed all options to do it. The mediatek bootrom was the latest exploit on most devices and the bootrom was disabled to access after 2020.
I was thinking of the possibility of rolling back the fie ware pre 7.3.26 to get around some of the restrictions.
