I just got my unlocked G5 Plus (XT1687) today and I've unlocked the bootloader and installed TWRP and SuperSU.
However, SuperSU seems to be randomly losing root access. It works for a little while, but then I'll get an error in SuperSU about root undetected and I have to reboot back into TWRP and reflash SuperSU. This has happened 3 times so far today.
Has anyone seen this issue in the stock rom? Is there some security process stealthily running in the background that deletes the su binary on a regular basis? I'm running build number NPN25.137-33.
Edit: SuperSU is running in systemless mode
I rooted mine using the Toolkit here yesterday and that afternoon it acted like i lost root. Root checker would say i didn't have root and just constantly flash that it was trying to get permission. I restarted it and it's been fine ever since.
I tried rebooting and it restores root temporarily, but I'm still losing it constantly (no set time interval, but I've seen it lost within a few minutes of a restart). Getting really annoying.
Would flashing one of the modified stock kernels potentially help this?
Hi,
I've the same problem. XT1685
Already done:
- reflash stock
- reflash updated stock
- reflash SuperSu 2.82 SR3 and SR4
Ever the same, after some (short) time the root is lost.
Unrooted from SuperSu app and installed Magisk 14.0: loses root after some moments!
Edit: after some reboots now its working. The root is maintained from 2 days. So Magisk 14.0 works.
Hi.
Here another confirmation. My XT1687 loses root rights once in a while. I’d say it’s about every 3rd day or so.. Simple reboot brings root rights back.
Config:
Build: NPN25.137-83
Kernel: 3.18.31-ElementalX
Root: Magigk 14.0
EDIT: When checking Magisk App I found out that Magisk crashed each time I started Superuser. So, I deinstalled Magisk and re-installed again. No problem ever since.
Always remember to un-optimize Magisk- (or SuperU-) App in battery options! "Boeffla-Doze-Control" also helps to avoid apps from falling asleep.
On StokROM + SuperSU 2.82SR5, I also experienced the same situation.
Running the following command no longer causes problems.
Code:
ln -s /su/bin/su /system/bin/su
Hello there.
I actually rooted my Moto G5 Plus according to this instructions. I flashed TWRP 3.2.1.0 and the last stabel SuperSU.
I also uninstalled SuperSU over "apps" on Stock Rom and tried to flash Magisk, but this causes in an error while flashing (It says something about "Error 1" and about the path, where the magisk.zip is, for further information I would try to flash again and tell you the whole error).
The latest thing I tried was running the command from highwaystar2699 over the terminal from TWRP, but still I loose root randomly.
Can anybody help? =(
Thanks in advance

No root losses anymore

Well, I can say, that after some updates of Magisk I don't experience the problem anymore. Neither me nor a friend who has the G5 (not Plus) have ever lost our root since being on Magisk Version 16.0
Maybe you should give Magisk a try...

Like I said, installing Magisk returns an error.
Nevertheless, after I ran the command from @highwaystar2699 and canceled the battery-optimization of SuperSU I've got still root after already 5 days of using the phone.
So, thanks for your help, for now =)
I have no ideas that you can solve your problem ...
What I got interested in your post(#8) is "I also uninstalled SuperSU over apps on Stock Rom".
If there is no mistake in my memory, SuperSU have an "unroot" menu, which should be used to uninstall SuperSU.
Did you uninstall by using "unroot" menu?
In any case, I am not sure how to recover the state of your g5plus.
I will not be able to help you. sorry.

Just boot into TWRP and open the terminal (you can find it under "advanced" or "tools", not completely sure right now) and run that command. Maybe you should check where the mentioned su-folder is located right now on your phone, 'cause in my case it was at a different location.
@highwaystar2699: Yeah, afterwards I also realized that unroot-option
So maybe I have to unroot with that option and retry to install magisk. I will try that maybe, if I should loose root again. Or when the next update comes. (I'm a little afraid about that. Sounds difficult to OTA-update after rooting your G5 Plus...)
Either way: Thanks for your help! If I try something, I will report about it here
Super SU working for G5 plus. I don't think so. It has some problems. Bootloops are frequent.
Sooooo, hello again all! @highwaystar2699: I lost root again after one hour when I had to reboot the phone so I just thought about: "Why don't give it a try now?"
So I flashed the superSU again in TWRP to get root, startet the SuperSU app and choose "Unroot". I was asked if I want to unroot because of an OTA update, which I answered with "no". The app closed and root was gone.
I rebooted into recovery and tried to install the magisk 16.0 zip aaaaaaannnnd...
...got Error 1 again.
At the point "Unmounting partitions", TWRP says
"Updater process ended with ERROR: 1
Error installing zip file '/sdcard/Magisk-v16.0.zip'"
Now I'm back to superSU again. Damn, I don't know whats wrong here =(
Short edit for @Yeshu_bablu: Yes, after installing superSU, you've got 2 to 3 bootloops. But only the first time. After it's installed, the phone boots normal.
So, according to you... Which is better? SuperSU or Magisk?
SuperSU is obsolete, twrp you need latest version 3.2.1.0 or higher number if updated.
Once twrp installed you can install the rom of your choice with or without gapps package of your choice.
Then you can install magisk 16.3 for root and modules if wanted.

I'm sorry, SuperSu or Magisk?
Short update and big thanks to @highwaystar2699 and @Wolfcity.
After I completely lost root with SuperSU, I tried to install Magisk but failed everytime with already known Error 1.
But finally, after I got a stock boot.img and flashed it and instantly (!) installed Magisk after flashing the boot.img, the phone startet normal and now I've got root without problems.
FIY: When I only flash the boot.img and don't root it in TWRP, the phone keeps bootlooping.
So, to give @Yeshu_bablu an answer: Magisk is better. SuperSu only make problems with Moto G5 Plus. Magisk works like a charm.
Hi guys, I have successfully rooted using temporary TWRP + modded magisk method, but now I gain root and checked via Root checker. But the problem is most of the root functions don't work as /system is read-only. Any idea?
Ya i have an idea.. Happened to me as well. I tried almoat everything but system won't be accessible anywhere.. I followed the same tutorial and installed magisk 13.4.
The only solution i could find was flash the latest factory image, and root again using supersu. I used the AIO tool by ghpranav and have got my phone rooted with xposed working without any issues.

I also fixed the issue. I flash the modified boot image and I am now gaining proper root access + Xposed. Get it working using Super SU, idk why Magisk keep failing thou. Was wanted to give Magisk a try, but it doesn't work properly on our device.

Sent from my Mi A1 using Tapatalk
Guys, this is Magisk from Pixel. You can't expect that it is working. I wrote to MagiskDevs already, they are working on a own Version for Mi A1. Use for that time normal SuperSU (Xposed works normally )
how to??

You need flash back stock boot image first, due to some limitations you can't have TWRP and SuperSU root at the same time. If you don't have the stock boot image. I suggest download the ROM from MIUI and then flash it. You can choose "flash_all_except_storage" option, this will keep your data.
http://en.miui.com/download-333.html
After flashing. Reboot back to fastboot and then:
Code:
fastboot oem unlock
After that just run root.bat from the cf-auto root folder you downloaded and wait for it to automatically reboot your phone. You should have root now, if you wish you can download SuperSU from the store.

I actually tried before, and I tell you the results:
Option 1 TWRP installed + Rooted with Magisk
= Pretty much useless as /system is read-only. Every root app doesn't function, unless it is system-less. But system-less modules nearly all doesn't work as the Magisk version too old. And this method won't trip safetynet
Option 2 no TWRP + Rooted with SuperSU (cf-root method) -- Currently using this state
= Got proper root access, Xposed works but will trip safetynet
Option 3 TWRP installed + Rooted with SuperSU (cf-root method)
= Don't try this, will cause your phone stuck in boot loop

No, it will cause your phone stuck it boot loop if you try to flash the SuperSU zip directly from the official ChainFire site. I think probably is the AB partitioning problem or some sort (unsure). As I said you need to run CF-Auto root to get proper root access, otherwise flashing Magisk through TWRP will makes most of the root apps does not work properly unless it also uses system-less root function.

No if you want proper root with CF-auto root you must not have TWRP installed. You either choose TWRP + Magisk (non-working root) or no TWRP but with SuperSU (working root, Xposed works too).

I am also facing the same issue, Done some research and most probably it's due to magisk 13.4. Now latest 14.4 is out so trying to update it so I can use Xposed.
Are you able to overcome it ?
Hello guys,
I had been using Magisk & Xposed on Nougat before Oreo rolled out in December. However after update I lost root. When I flashed patched_boot.img I got stuck in bootloop (So I returned to stock boot.img). I am pretty sure bootloop was caused by some incompatible Magisk module. The problem is that I don't know how to disable them now - I don't want to install TWRP (because I want to be able to get OTAs) and when I use only "bootable" version of TWRP, it can not detect any files/partitions, so I am unable to use "mount-magisk.zip" to remove wrong Magisk modules. So I am kind of stuck.
Here is what I want to achieve:
- remove incompatible magisk modules
- gain root without permanent TWRP
- profit
I have been searching this forum for quite a while but couldn't find some relevant consistent information. Any tips how to deal with this?
At the moment I am running Oreo /w January update.
Thank you
For others looking for similar answers, I was able to solve it:
I flashed TWRP, then using "mount-magisk" removed all modules, then using MiFlashTool flashed original rom (you can do that without loosing data) and then I just followed guide to root using patched boot.img.
Good luck

after uptade magisk my phone stuck in fastboot . i cant go to recovery . what i can do ?
phone is over or i can fix it ?
Open Magisk Github, and try to find a solution in the Magisk Troubleshooting
You say you "updated Magisk". Since you didn't describe how, supposidely you did by flashing Magisk through TWRP or by Direct method from Magisk app/mngr
Unfortunately, those two ways are most risky. If anything goes wrong (if you don't have TWRP backup) you cannot go back to the previous working configuration
It takes just few minutes more to extract and patch the boot.img and to flash it. If anything goes wrong, you flash the original unpatched boot.img or boot.img that was patched by your older Magisk and you are back in business.
To fix the bootlop now, it will take more than few extra minutes for extracting, patching and flashing the image every time when installing and updating Magisk

You should better have updated Magisk by patching the boot.img, then flashing (from Fastboot or TWRP) - in that case, if you have bootloop you simply flash back your previously patched img that used to work
I cannot know what went wrong. Maybe, there is a module that is no more compatible and causing the bootlop:
- Reboot to TWRP, Advanced, File Manager and navigate to /data/adb/modules
Each folder corresponds to one module.
Add an empty file named: disable (exactly as that) to each folder/module (or only to those modules you suspect they might be causing the bootloop).
Once you disabled the critical module, you can boot to system and from Magisk app further manage your modules.
Or, from TWRP flash to Boot the original boot.img extracted from your OTA zip file.
When you reboot to system, there will be no Magisk but next time you install Magisk it will find and activate old modules, probably causing again the bootloop
Or, download Magisk apk, rename to uninstall.zip and flash from TWRP to fully uninstall Magisk (and all its modules, everything)
Recommending first method, but you see the other two options as well

I don't use discord and I have work and private life
I gave you directions that if you knew just basic things about flashing and File mngr in TWRP, about using Magisk, etc, would be nite than enough to follow directions
Most annoying users are those who install'nuclear bomb' like Magisk, do updates, etc, but never spent their time to learn (when things work and it's easier) how to use, read the Instructions (available by one click to Github from Magisk app), etc, and then when (sooner or later) get a brick, cry for somebody to guide them to click here, there, etc.
You can still use PC and google and fill the gaps from my instructions to what/how you must click here and there
Sorry to be brutal but I really don't have time

And about the installing nuclear bomb thing... magisk has the direct install option which is the nuclear bomb button (sometimes) the reason why my phone got into bootloop is a module which isnt working anymore its called energized its for blocking ads. You don't need to delete modules (some of them, like V4A might be complicated to install again) - just disable them through still the working Magisk app before you go for updating
Or patch and flash the image instead of taking Direct install. There might be other reasons to cause bootloop, not just incompatible modules.
If it bootloops when you flash the newly patched img, just flash your old img, previously patched by the older Magisk version, that used to work for you
As simple as that - and no bootloops, no emergency help needed, etc
