I would like to preface this by saying I love all the Custom ROM's available, especially the Android 10 ones. But, I've noticed one problem shared by all the ROM's I've tested so far (almost all). It's that the mic quality is simply horrible on every single one of them. The first thing I do when I download a Custom ROM is to test the mic using the Google Recorder app and so far, no custom ROM has even come close the loudness and quality of stock. I wouldn't mind if the mic quality was bad, but that's not the biggest problem. The biggest problem is that the mic VOLUME is extremely low. I have to shout while calling just so the other person can hear me. How do I fix this problem? The same problem cropped up a lot on Pie ROM's too. I've tried editing the mixer_paths.xml but I don't really know where to look.
I would greatly appreciate if anyone could help me. Cheers.

Use kernel with mic gain and increase it to your liking.

When I talk on this phone, the sound is very poor... Although not too loud (like other complaints) but the sound crackles at high frequencies... The speakerphone is even worse...
Is anyone aware of some tweaks to improve communication sound on this phone?
Can AudioBooster be set up to work with the phone's sound not only the music player? Any other options ???
Thank you in advance.

I think the high volume on this phone is artificially boosted over what it's meant to be, i.e. HTC have modified the audiopara (or something like that) in the Windows folder to try and boost the speakers sound over what it's meant to be.
(Something that ROM coookers figured out on the Diamond I think).
I think, maybe someone can reduce those values back to normal? The speaker will be a little quieter, but it won't crackle or distort as much.

Which radio do you recommend? I have Leo_RADIO_2.07.50.27_2 and a terrible sound while on the phone.
Sound is to loud, impossible to lower volume enough. Much distortion even at lowest volume (which still is to loud). Bad sound in cable handsfree and BT handsfree.
Soundquality while playing music on the other hand is perfect in speaker, handsfree and BT handsfree.
Suggestions?
Since sound is often a pretty subjective matter, so I'd like to interject that the phone network only transmits from around 300 Hz to 3,000 Hz. Therefore the sound of a voice over your phone will never sound as clear and nice as it should, let alone like the 192 kbps-MP3-file you are playing
If it's worse compared to other phones however it's, as stated above, likely a problem with the radio. I use the 2.08.50.08_2 from [REF]The HTC HD2 Radio ROM Thread and have a quite decent quality.
I agree totally - if it sounds good or bad is individually. But, the sound quality in my HD2 is far worse than in my 5 years old SonyEricsson, and when I borrowed a Nokia the other day I was surprised how good (clear, crisp, distorsion free) a cell phone can sound.
I have a lot of distorsion and all too loud sound. Often I have to hold my phone 20 cm away from my ear just to avoid getting half deaf..
Thanks for the tip, I'll try the 2.08.50.08_2 Radio and hope for a better sound
you can try this hotfix...worked very well @my hd2
i got this from another forum.
little info: some users said that the soundlevel is now always set up to 100%...but try it on your own!

Thanks, trying it now, will report back after tomorrow's hardcore testing at work..
Return it if you can...
I had Nokia E71 before and it's speaker is fo another level better than HD2... BUT, question is: when I'm gonna use speakerphone on my HD2? ... almost never
Seems better, but a little to subjective at the moment. Will keep trying and report back!
Definitely better after the patch. Quite good actually. I have not seen any side effects yet, only clear sound, and better volume.
Thanks for the hotfix!
Will try it on my colleague's phone also now.
sound quality
I used the hotfix as well but it appears to have made no difference whatsoever to the quality of sound during calls , so my phone is going back to htc again and if it returns with the same issues i will ask for a replacement as due to the ammoun of posts on here this is a major flaw in the phone and a highly irritating one too , i love this phone but the audio quality during calls is appalling in comparison to all my previous phones .
After a couple more days of testing I found out that the patch gave no effect at all. BUT: I found out another thing: Even though the system volume is at lowest according to the meter, if you increase, you actually lower the volume. So, if you during a call first increase and then decrease the volume, it gets acceptable. Still to loud though.
So, it seems like what HTC really should do is to get the dialer use the sound mixer properly. Today it is obviously oversteering which creates distorsion.
this is a war we won't win

I've bought my HD2 back in Dec the 11th and since then I've been in contact with HTC about fixing this problem. They've given me a debug tool to run on my device, sent the logs twice and so far they've done nothing about it. I've given up. What I do for outgoing calls, while it rings I turn the volume all the way up and then all the way down before the other party answers. doing this you get a decent sound. Can't do much about the incoming calls,
As far as flashing different radios and roms... I've flashed about 30time already. tried all the possible radio/rom combinations but with only slight different results. Nothing to brag about!
the fix I attached helps a little bit!
If anybody finds and cure let us all know! please!!!!!
No doubt I'll get flamed for asking a question that must of been asked before. So I apologise beforehand, but I searched and couldn't find the answer.
I know it's known the Android volume is lower than WinMo, does anyone know of a way to increase it? I don't have issues with in-call volume. Just media volume like YouTube player and the Music Player.
Thanks in advance for any helpful replies.
I am also encountering this volume problem. Also when I recorded a video, the quality was great, but the video volume is extremely low. Hope someone out there has a fix. Thanks in advance.
i would also be interested in finding out about this, at least someone reffer to us to a link and help us find the answer please
Looks like the problem is common to Android in general. The most promising info i found that somewhat made sense to me was this thread.
http://www.mail-archive.com/[email protected]/msg00649.html
But I can find the files... make one of the cooks can make sense of it.
Bangsters lastest has the best volume I've heard yet.. haven't tried the other CM based Roms though I'm kinda hooked on this one.. just need to update my sig
Sent from my HTC HD2 using XDA App
i think it is a general android issue , my x10 also has the same issue
What's wierd is that I know it has the potential to be ear-splitting, but android just limits it for some reason. Sometimes when I first start playing music, The sound will absolutely BLAST for like half a second, and then 'corrects itself' down to a much lower volume.
I'm hoping they crack this nut soon too. The volume on Shubcraft is *okay*, but I still find myself turning it up as loud as it'll go. I have a pair of Hello Kitty headphones with a volume dial built in to them & they're really good for boosting music volume. For anyone who's having a problem with media volume, I suggest getting some headphones like this(not necessarily HK-branded lol).
Thank you all for the replies, at least I'm not the only one who was wondering. If it's just a general Android issue then I'll live with it, use headphones perhaps like someone suggested (not Hello Kitty though)
I have noticed though, with the game Paper Toss, the volume is loud. However when I use the YouTube player or Music Player and I find it difficult to hear at times. Unless I'm in a completely silent room. Doesn't make sense if It can go loud, why it doesn't. Or there's no App to boost the volume, that I can find anyway.
Has anyone found a way (or an app) to increase the mic volume? When I am google video chat with someone they say they can hardly hear me.
Snap! I was just about to post the exact same question. I've hunted aroudn and found a fair few people asking the quetsion in various threads but can't seem to find an answer, I know it can be done as I've had it too loud on other phone and they've tweaked it and altered the volume so surely it's fairly easy tweak (if you know what to tweak) to do it the other way. Probably just altering a register somewhere.
We got my mother in law a transformer and she calls us on Google talk. She can't hear us very well and we can only just hear her too. I know the speakers are very quiet but Google talk is just silly, even at full volume it's still very quiet.
I would also be very interested in learning if there is a way to increase mic volume.
Thus far I'm not aware of a way, but I too have the same issue. Mic is ludicrously quiet, only picks me up reasonably well if I turn the tablet so the microphone points directly to me (and hence, I can't see the screen).
Short of Asus fixing it, or a third-party making a fix (which will likely need root access to apply), the only solution is to use an external microphone.
Similar experience with Gtalk.. however not much of a problem with Skype.. heard that the pinout is similar to iphone.. so any iphone compatible headset should do the trick.
when speaking to my mother in law my father in law iss often there as well so headset is not an option.
Yet another thing we need a fix for! This fix list is geting longer Poor sound at the best of time to having quiet poor sound makes it almost unuseable!
i have the same problem with Fring
lets hope one of the clever bods can fix it for us
I am rooted and this was one of the reasons I did it.
Rooting is very easy to do on here now with the pure root package and I can't really see any downside to it other than it doens't update OTA but thats hardly a killer.
The microphone is bad on the Acer A500 as well. Trying to use the google voice to text is rather frustrating because it affects the accuracy of the translation. I was hoping the asus would be better in this regard, but if it's not then there's no point in switching tabs. I guess I will just have to speak LOUDER!
Rob
nobody worked out a way of fiing bad mic volume then?
The sad thing about the mic's location on the TF is that it is facing the wrong direction to pick up any voice. I too, am having issues with the TF not picking up my voice very well. I was hoping that there is a fix by now, but guess not.
voodoo
For rooted users you can install the voodoo kernel which improves audio including micropone volumes. From what i read I am tempted to root my device just for this.
Search on the market for voodoo, (and then show me how you did it

I wasn't aware voodoo had any effect on mic? Plus it has not effect on speaker volume, only volume / quality on headphone output (can connect external speakers to it via that) I may be wrong though. I already have voodoo but use volume+ to increase built in speaker volumes. Mic is still terribly quiet
Hi,
I'm experiencing many sound problems on my U8800Pro. Almost every ROM has it's own specific sound problems, for example MIUIv5 or CM10 have a lot of junk noise (which I cant identify, it just plays horrible) when playing from the back speaker. Some ROM's (i think shendu) are playing only one channel (mono) from the back speaker (which, for example, makes "Riders on the storm" or some Beattles unlistenable) but the quality is very good.
The only ROM I've come across, which makes a really good sound is ICEdroidV1 (because it's a modified stock rom)(and Stock, of course).
Is there a way how to "backport" "drivers" or some libs in order to resolve these issues across every ROM?
Call Sound and Mic sound are another story. On some ROM's, people can hear me good but I hear them really poor (some CM10)(which makes the phone unusable for example in bar or on the bus), on the ICEdroidV1 I can hear beatifully but in order to be heard, I have to have the phone really tightly to my face (I think that the second microphone is not working, but not sure).
I know these are really ROM specific issues, but do we have some universal fix for these issues?
It's really one of those issues which makes me hate this phone. (And, of course, the stock roms are slow and buggy). It makes me even think about buying a different phone but also, as a longtime linux user, hurts my head, because the hardware of the phone is pretty good and it fits all my needs --- it's the software that's putting me off.
If needed (but I think everyone knows what I'm talking about) I can record the sound and upload it here.
Thanks
When I first got the V20, one of the things I was always impressed by was the speaker. It was loud, clear, and it seemed like LG had implemented some sort of volume compression/limiting to keep things clear without clipping or distortion. I rooted the phone about six months ago, finally, and have tried a few custom ROMs. Some amazing work done by the people here, but it seems that the speaker no longer sounds anywhere near as good, and it often crackles and distorts when playing anything just slightly above hearing level. I reflashed the h918 stock mod and all was taken care of, but I don't wanna be stuck with a stock ROM and lose the versatility being rooted brings. Another thing I noticed was that when I send audio messages on Facebook Messenger, they don't record nearly as loud and clear as they do with the stock ROM.
I'm currently using LOS16 with Gamma Kernel (SS).
I was wondering if anyone could maybe figure out what LG did with their speaker (and possibly mic) settings and find a way to implement them somehow with a mod? I'm not sure if this can be done via XML or anything like that. I just hate how all my custom ringtones sound now and having YouTube, my music player, and anything crackle has just taken my enjoyment of these ROMs a notch. Maybe even come up with some similar settings via Viper4Android using the compression tool?
Thanks a lot of any help!
