Best Custom ROM For The Essential PH-1? - Essential Phone Questions & Answers

I've been thinking about flashing a custom ROM onto my Essential, but, unlike the S4's GoldenEye, there are no clearly stable ROMs I've heard of. So, if it's not a bother, could you guys recommend a good, stable custom ROM for beginners? I'd like one I can stick with for a while without any huge bugs to get me to jump ship. Thanks for reading. A response would be greatly appreciated.
P.S: Please, none of the "Stock is best". The amount of forums I've seen where those are the only replies are ridiculous, as they don't even actually answer the question at hand.

I don't think you'll get an answer to your question because I don't think anyone has tested all ROMs and compared them. Even then it would be kinda subjective. I did install Paranoid quartz v1 and am using it as a daily driver. Only issue with this ROM is that the device is not certified in Play Store so I can't install Netflix without some extra tinkering. Besides that, the ROM is awesome. I also tried the second version of this ROM, but it seems to have a battery issue.

Thanks. I heard about the battery issue, too. For now, I'll flash Quartz V1. I don't have Netflix, so it's not really a bother to me.

Evolution X is the best ROM, especially for Pixel experience.

Hey. I downloaded Evolution X, and I plan to flash it tomorrow. What build are you on? I downloaded 4.20, but I'd like to know which is the nlst recent stable build. I'd like to stick with a custom ROM for a while without switching due to bugs, if I can. Thanks.

I flashed 4.20 the day before yesterday and have found no bugs yet. I first flashed the January Firmware, AOSP Vendor fastboot script as found on the StatiXOS OP.

Thanks. Texting you from Evolution X 4.2. It runs great. Only minor thing that bugs me is that I can't take away permissions from Google apps. But, like I said, that's pretty much a non-issue, especially when you look at the features and customization options. Thanks to everyone for the help. Have a good one.

Haven't tested that out yet. It is on September 2019 build, though, But, I just called my carrier, and they picked up just fine. Although, that may be because it's my carrier. I'll try with a real number later, and I'll report back. Thanks for the heads-up.

If you have no sound when calling or receiving, in Phone - Setting - Accessibility, make sure Hearing aids is switch off. It's been turn on by default in some cases. I didn't know this until I change to another ROM.

Best ROM out there for Moto X Style?

Hello, two questions:
- What is the most stable and most problem-free 7.1 ROM for Moto X Style? CM, Lineage, Slim7?
- Should I wait for the official ROM?
Thanks.

For me it's dirty unicorns. It's really stable and the latest weekly has the camera running superb for me so far with Snapchat and the inbuilt camera app. Also has the most kernel customizations out of every 7.1.1 custom ROM. Highly recommend you to try it out and see for yourself since ROMs are based on personal preference.
And I would recommend: next time ask such questions in the Q&A section or even general section but NEVER in android development section.

Don't take this the wrong way since it is a sincere question. Why not in a developer thread? I have been a member of the CM11 thread until the project ended and it was a developer thread, the ONLY place you could get up to the minute, real help for the custom rom. It was a developer thread especially made for this rom.

Because the question is generic. Fur the most part the development sections should be geared toward resolving issues with ROMs and/or what features the ROM may need improvement on. Asking what people think is the most stable ROM or what not sure not contribute to development.

That is a good answer. No one should be in developer threads asking what is the best rom, etc. But to join a rom specific developer thread is a good place to post rom questions for this device. We need *some place* to discuss this and IMHO, the developer threads are the best, where you get the best answers, and most serious places to get answers. With that in mind, one has to behave accordingly. I.e.: No clowning around for best rom, best games, pokemon, or any other out of place questions or comments. You have earned your Thanks. Thanks!
EDIT: "Generic" question, that is the significant part I missed. There are plenty of places to discuss generic rom questions but not in a developer thread. For specific questions, I would imagine there are threads for that. My CM11 thread was quite specific so the Q&A was most welcome there. :good:

Please read up on it in the forums dedicated for the ROM. That is part of the purpose of those forums: to report issues and allow people such as yourself to determine if the ROM will work for you by reading through them.

I have read through them all. There is no sufficient information. Everyone is like thank you so much for this without saying any issues, so after installation I found everything was broken.
When u ask also people come and say "why don't u try it for urself?" What sort of theory is that? last time all ROMs used to have a section at least for bug list of features that doesn't work, but none of the new ROMs have that. Its like we have to take a medicine without knowing the side effects to know only about them after trying it.

Camera is now stable. Flashlight not as much. Its mostly just slow. Everything else is now stable and is my daily driver, I've been using it not because the camera is better. I havnt found anything broken. Gonna try truepure stock rom today just because I sorda miss it. But I'm gonna stick with dirty unicorn because its working perfectly for me now with mini dynamic apps. Also open gapps aroma also work great.

11.2 RC is what I recommend. That didn't have any problems what so ever except flashlight. I'm on the latest weekly and there is just small changes that don't matter much except viper for android can work on enforcing and magisk is in the settings menu now.

Awesome. I guess I'll be giving it another try. Right now I'm running on their 10.5, pretty stable but I have random reboots

Aicp April nightlies have been amazing, huge upgrade over previous Roms for me, including previous versions of AICP itself. Battery life is poor currently, but everything is buttery smooth and snappy (v4a, Substratum, pixel launcher, moto camera and gallery all working flawlessly). I'd highly recommend trying it, even if you have previously. I just switched my color profile to "deep black colorful" as well and i must say I'm really loving my phone again.

I had major problems flashing DU when I tried. I did a full wipe and tried 3 different gapps, including the recommended mini dynamic gapps and I got constant google play services force closes when it booted up. I couldn't even get to settings to try to close or mute something to look around at what was causing it. I'm using Ground Zero Roms Validus and its great for the most part. Still want to try DU though if I can figure out that issue.

That's weird. I never had that problem before. I might flash the ROM and gapps and make a backup and maybe install it to Android file host so you won't run into any problems. I use open gapps aroma and change the SMS app, clock, calender, and other stock apps for Google apps and it worked fine for me. Even dynamic gapps worked fine. I don't know what the problem could be.

I can understand the frustration, but to some degree it is almost a crap shoot, especially on AOSP. Things can break from one update to the next as the devs work their magic. What worked today may not work tomorrow and vice versa. That is why I recommend trying then out. Devs typically work to improve their ROMs both stability and feature wise but given the difference in usage, apps, and even manufacturing variances in hardware internals, a ROM could work well for one user's needs but be broken for another.
As far as AOSP, I hear a lot of good things about AICP, but I use stock rooted on my MXPE so I can't confirm anything. It works great on my old LG G3 D850.
How?

Sorry for the noob question...I did a lot of custom roms on my SGS2 and SGS4 but when I got my Moto X Pure I have just used it stock.
I have been having enough issues with it that I considered replacing it with a Moto G5 Plus but decided I might as well try a ROM before I give up on it entirely.
So back to the noob question...how do I get from stock to that ROM? Also, can you send me a link to the ROM you are talking about (This one? https://forum.xda-developers.com/moto-x-style/development/rom-aicp-clark-xt1575-t3222868/page646)

To your noob question: I'm pretty sure the general process is the same to get a custom ROM as the SGSs you did. Flash the appropriate custom ROM made for your device via custom recovery. That has not really changed since custom ROMs for Android first came into being. The methods of getting a custom recovery onto a device changes though so please use due diligence to get it done if you haven't already.

New owner contemplating lineage flash

Hello,
I am new to android and recently ordered a Leeco pro3 for $120 (couldn't pass it up). I have read that it does not get ota updates in the US, so I have a few questions. Is there any detriment to using an outdated android version? Can I still run apps like facebook, twitter, and Snapchat? If i flash to lineage, will I still have all of the features (camera, Snapchat and facebook apps, etc)? I know the IR blaster won't work, but this isn't an issue. I just have read that certain apps won't work and want to avoid having a phone with no camera or no social media apps such as Snapchat. Thank you all ahead of time.

If all you need is just core functionality then I would there is nothing wrong with running the stock rom. Everything will work right out of the box and all of those apps you mentioned should run just fine. Not to mention you should get really good battery life. With that said if you like some of the features that come with Nougat based roms such as better Doze and Camera API 2 support so you can install apps like google camera and give you camera a nice performance boost then go for it. I have installed all of the aftermarket roms available in this thread and IMHO Paranoid turned out to be the best. I havent had a single issue with it and it has the latest drivers taken from Oneplus 3's source code.

Thank you for the quick response. Given the fact that you have gone through using custom roms, have you been able to use snapchat on Paranoid? I have read that custom roms cause the app not to work. Also, for someone who has never used an android device, how hard is it to flash a custom rom? I am very interested in having a better camera, as I will be coming from a Lumia 950 XL (it has been deteriorating and Microsoft seems to have given up on W10M.). I know that this isn't on that level, but anything I can do to get the gap smaller is good. I am also interested in other features, but have to ask - is your battery life significantly worse running a custom rom? That would be a turn off. Thank you again.

Nope my battery life is near identical to stock and everything works on Paranoid. My favorite thing about it too is that all viarations of Google camera also work which will give you great pictures and videos if you play around with them far better than stock imho. But play with it first you will find that you can do far more on Android than you can windows mobile. The ecosystem just doesn't compare. If you want to to install a rom then follow the guides but make sure you do your homework before just jumping in. It's not difficult but a screw up could brick your phone. But there are also many guides for unbricking as well
Lineage has new Android versions first, but doesn’t have good battery life on this device, use a different ROM. If you want Snapchat, you can use a ROM that passes Safetynet or maybe Magisk’s hide feature. Oreo ROMs don’t pass safetynet, but some other Nougat ROMs do.

This is great news that the camera actually improves. Do you have snapchat issues with this rom? I just want to ensure I am able to enjoy everything android has to offer (well, as much as possible on a year old phone for now), as I have missed quite a bit of apps on W10M.

Paranoid does, so does AICP I think, both for nougut, not Oreo ones yet as SELinux is not working on Oreo. There are others that probably do also, but I haven't tried them yet.

This is tremendous. I am already turning into an android fanboy and I haven't even got the phone. It is quite impressive that the opensource community can get the latest editions stable on these devices. I just saw no need to go buy a galaxy or near $1K smartphone when the SD820 is still a powerhouse in my eyes. Do I have to root to install Paranoid, or just unlock bootloader and flash? (I may be missing a step but am going solely off of how I understood the guides)

SD821, not 820, the model with the 820, the so called elite, has nearly no development.
You have to flash a file to unlock the American model’s bootloader. (The SD821 powered x727 I think it’s called...) the Chinese model x720 has an unlocked bootloader, but is missing US carrier frequencies so it’s worse for Americans.

It stinks because I had an additional coupon bringing this to $120s. A dual sim (necessary for work) phone with a sd820 for that price seemed too good to be true and now it seems it is. However, if I can still get the play store ill be fine on any rom (would prefer a custom).

So ya you got the Elite. I do recall there being a couple of ROMs for that phone just poke around this forum and I believe you will find them.
you can find all the detailed specs here:

The only thing I would really be concerned about is band support and if you will get LTE or not. It looks like its a mixed bag here:

I checked the band support and that's good. Will this come with the play store though? And if not, is there a way to install it on the stock rom? I just want to make sure I have the basic apps (although I'd prefer a custom rom)

[Q] What is the best ROM in 2019 for Note 4 Exynos

Hello & Happy New Year
Tell us what ROM you're using and for how long?
also what root method does it have [if it is rooted] : Magisk or SuperSu
Your Info can be great help for ppl on stock like me who wants to use a stable ROM
Have a nice day
If you started this topic than I would say that you should share with us first .

Go ahead and read the forum of Exynos. Try to understand what you want to do before you proceed, take risks and learn.
Hundreds of ppl here have done the same, it's no shame to it.
It's the best way to get your answers right.
Have a nice year, you'll need it.
PS: yes, it takes time, not everything in life is at the touch of a button
Best ROM is always stock ROM.
100 percent stable and everything works.
Use MagiSK if you want easy root / xposed.
Currently Refined Nougat, made under the XDA username Ananjaser1211
Its features:
—A fully ported Nougat ROM (7.0) with Samsung Experience v8.1
—+1 to +3 hours of SOT (Screen On Time) with edited kernel settings
—Everything that every Samsung phone offers (Edge Screen, Samsung Themes, etc.)
—Great Performance
—Root with either SuperSU or Magisk (I'm biased with the latter)
—Support for extended batteries
Some of Its Bugs and Fixes:
•Samsung Camera can't record videos—use other camera apps like Footej or Google Camera from APKMirror (the latest arm7 version only)
•Echo during calls—there's a fix for that on the first page, use that and use your earphones 'cause the fix will disable Loud Speaker mode
•No Blue Light Filter and AOD—use this at your own risk; for Blue Light Filter, use 3rd party apps like Twilight
•No fingerprint unlock—no hope on fixing that as its development stopped last month
•Broken RIL at N10U—no hope on fixing that
Been using this since August, and I'm not going back to Marshmallow ever again, because this gave life to my Note 4 from its rotten update. And despite of its bugs, they're so few that I can say that it is a stable ROM for the Note 4. Try it, and you won't regret it.
Let us know if you find Oreo lol.

You wait, 'cause the maker of Refined Nougat is building LineageOS 15.1 (Oreo) for the Exynos Note 4.
Nemesisrom 6.0.1
Is great rom
Stable with no problems in call or bt
I can't judge the speed compare to the stock but everything is good

It was. But then Anan changed his mind in the last minute, so, alas, he abandoned it and has never released it sadly. (Check the Refined Nougat Telegram group, and scroll your way up for verification.)
Update: Upon further checking, it's on the way. He just needs to fix audio, video recording, NFC, and RIL, then it should be good to go.

There is one LineageOS for the Exynos Note 4 (LineageOS 14.1), but it has had been abandoned, and IDK if it's stable.

unofficial Lineage OS 17.1 ?

Just stumbled upon this, but it seems kinda sketchy referring to @Quallenauge (who's listed as inactive - sorry if you aren't ) and XDA, but having no thread about it here on XDA...

Has anyone made the plunge? Brick, bugs or badass?

I haven't applied for reactivating my XDA state
You can try this version, but make sure you perform the migration script (official -> unofficial) if needed.
I was too lazy to create a new topic for this version. I have a YTX703L and it runs as good LOS16.1 runs. So I found no show stoppers.
Works pretty well
works pretty well...but ive flicker and glitches on the display...its getting less in the last build...will you go on and work on the newest Android version ?
thanks for your great work

lineage-17.1-20200424-UNOFFICIAL-YTX703F
works pretty good with android 10
Installed lineage-17.1-20200424-UNOFFICIAL-YTX703F.zip and plan to play around with it a little.
How do I get exfat support back for this unofficial version? Yoga tab 3 is useless for me without exfat as I use it as my mobile movie theater
Really appreciate the work of Lineage team! Good stuff...

Hi
I've been watching these forums like a hawk trying to get my tablet to run smooth considering the bad software from Lenovo.
Would you say it's working well with this version?
If the battery life is good and the bugs aren't too many , I wanna try it!
My now Lineage 16 is working alright, the tablet is fast but the battery is not as good as stock sadly.
Is is good enough for a daily driver?

Have been experiencing some lock up after long idle time. I mostly use my Yoga to watch movies and use MX Player. A few times would find launcher unresposive when come back from work and the only recovery is to power cycle. I do get restart option on long press of power button, but when choose to restart tablet does not come back on its own.
As for the battery, I've decided to attempt rebuilding it using new individual cells. Will post my results if I succeed or not.
Once/if battery issue is resolved, I probably will roll back to Lineage 16 and wait for a stable 17 release.
Just installed, working well
Thanks very much to the dev for continuing to release builds for this device. Just upgraded from OS16 today. Install worked really well with no issues. So far it's running nicely. New gesture navigation system is working in Trebuchet launcher, so now my phone and tablet are the same, it was annoying before having different interfaces on different devices. Excellent work, thanks a lot!
The last update was 10.08.2020, do we see a new one?
It looks like as we get no more updates, so I will go back to 16.
Sorry
surprise, surprise. Just after I went back to 16 a new 17.1 update arrived, dated 17.09.2020. I did a dirty install and it worked out.
Thanks
However, I am still wondering if it is worth switching from 16 to 17
If you are happy with Android 9 , keep it. If you are willing to have Android 10 than go for it. What new, I have no idea.

Request - Play Store - How to? - Gifting some tablets :) -- They are using LineageOS

Good afternoon,
I have some rooted HD 8's and HD 10's *Both using Lineage OS.
Is there a pretty decent guide on exactly what to download to get play store working?
I have some tablets I'd like to give to my parents after working this out.
Thank you in advance.
Its a late Mothers day gift and recent Fathers day gift.
@likwidchz I have strong doubts that playstore (Gapps) is working on anything else then on android.
I've flashed Ubuntu on a Fairphone and Playstore didn't work there.
So imho you gotta flash LineageOS to use it.

I see.
Which LOS?
Tried any Gapps yet?
I think that might be the issue. I don't know what to install.
on the HD8's I have
lineage-15.1-20220102-UNOFFICIAL-giza.zip
On the HD10's I have
lineage-16.0-20220506-UNOFFICIAL-suez.zip
If there is a later OS for either of those tablets please let me know and ill upgrade that.
What do I flash?? is that what OpenGapps is?

As I don't have your device you gotta check first if it's 32 or 64bit.
Then choose the appropriate file from here.
I usually take pico.
Thank you, after going back and forth a tad with it, I realized just that. I'll use pico as I think thats the only thing they will need.
Thank you again!

Allow me to lead your attention to the app Netguard-no-root by @M66B.
As I understood you want to give the tabs to your parents.
With that app you're able to block internet access for each app (even system apps) separately and these apps don't even notice that.
I've bought protocolling (useful for beginners when setting up) but it works free as well.
All games I use are blocked and half of the other apps as well.
I kind of realize now either one of two things.
The lineage OS latest june release uses lots of battery when powered off and just sitting.
or these tablets battery life I bought on ebay is just old.
How long should these things be able to sit on a desk and be off?

Imo there is no general answer to that.
I experienced that even the same LOS number behaves not the same on different devices. I think that the kernel chosen by the dev is the culprit.
As an example: one tablet on LOS18.1 can be off for days consuming nothing while one phone on same LOS uses around 10%/d even when off as well.
okay well crap, I guess thinking out loud, I wonder if it makes sense to put the stock amazon distro on it if there is one available to flash with twrp. That might be a bit less weird for them.
I just know if the battery dies, phone calls will be happening lol.
