Hi Guys
I'm on Shield pro 2019 and 2017.
I have a rather peculiar problem on the Shield 2019 which is taking my mind well.
I explain on my two shields I have all the players installed: Mx player pro, Vimu, VLC, Kodi, Plex, Nova Player, nPlayer and night Player ...
Except that in all applications like file explorers, when I want to watch a video, on my Shield 2019, in the window that appears I only have Mx Player and Vimu ... I don't have all the other players installed ....
No matter how much I look in all the settings, I am unable to find an option to show them all .... notably Nova player and VLC which I don't have ...
Of course, uninstalling the programs, reinstalling them ... Emptying the cache, erasing the data was done fifteen times. As was the restart of my Shield 2019.
And the playersare not present, well hidden below the window that appears for the selection of the players.
I do not have this problem with my shield 2017, and there all the players appear even those of the file explorers ....
If you have a solution please, it would be with pleasure because I do not especially want to have to reinstall everything ...
Thank you in advance.

Hi guys, i've got a little problem with streaming videos to the N7 and need a little push in the right direction.
So i'm using Linux Ubuntu 12.04, i've setup Samba and managed to get the SMB share working on the tablet through ES File Explorer...
All that works fine, i can see what's on the computer, i can delete, add, move, copy files, that works good. However i cannot for the life of me get the damn thing to stream videos properly, the video just cuts out or drops or something. :crying:
Example:
So i'm watching chuck, i can watch the first 15/20 minutes without any hiccups, it streams perfectly and everything is all good, then all of a sudden the video stops and the app closes, ES File Explorer restarts and im back to the local content on the SD storage.
I have tried opening the videos in ES File Explorer with VLC player, MX Player, Dice Player and V Player... It just drops out every 20 minutes roughly... Am i doing something wrong or is it a bug or am i missing something obvious? I've googled the issue and the closest i can find is to use BubbleUPnP, i can't connect to local host in Linux to setup the pc end it refuses to connect.
Any help would be appreciated.
Thanks
I'm pretty sure yur chuck video is broken/corrupted at one point. Can you verify if it always crash at the same minutes/second?

I've checked around 6 episodes in the series and its done for all of them, I've also streamed a movie (Bourne identity) to see if its just the chuck videos and the movie cuts out around every 20minutes too.

This happens to me also. I use ES File Explorer to browse to videos stored on my WD Elements external USB HD connected to a WDTV network media player on my LAN and stream to either MX Player or BSPlayer on an unrooted Nexus7. All videos abruplty stop after a period of time and I get kicked back to ES File Explorer SD Card directory. This happens regardless of the media (I've tried tons of files) and happens with both MX Player and BSPlayer. I am assuming it is a bug with ES File Explorer unless it has something to do with the source.
Anyone have any ideas why this happens?
I realize this is an old thread, but I have been having this issue for a long time. I contacted the developer, and the app has been updated many times since, but the issue persists. I had originally thought the issue was with the video player, but I think you're right. No matter which video player I use, the video drops out at random intervals, crashing the player and kicking me back to ES File Explorer, but on the Local tab, not where I left it. Sometimes the interval is less than 10 minutes, sometimes I make it through as much as 30 minutes before the player crashes. There doesn't seem to be a pattern. I have reproduced this with hundreds of videos, encoded with at least 3 different codecs, of varying size and length. My server is XP Pro SP3, so it's not something tied to Linux, as another user suggested. Although this is a Nexus thread, I have experienced this on my Transformer TF700T. Is it possible the ES app is going to "sleep" while the video is playing, causing the LAN session to close? Eight months is a long time to wait for such an important bug fix. I'd be willing to post logs if you explain how to get them.
I still have that problem, on my new devices, did any of you found a fix or a reason`?
One of the main reasons I bought the Nexus Player was so I can watch videos from my network hard drive. I have been doing this in the past with my WD TV Live but it's now very slow although still does the job well.
I just got the Nexus Player today but after playing around a little I finally figured out I can access my network hard drive with ES File Explorer, although it's a little cumbersome, and load the videos there. However, the built-in media player along with Archo and MX all can not play audio from MKV files. VLC was able to play audio from MKV files but for some reason it refuse to load external subtitle files, only those built-in to the MKV file.
Anyone have any suggestions to alternatives? On my Nexus 9 I use BS Player to both access my videos on my network hard drive and watch but unfortunately it isn't available for the Nexus Player AFAIK.
Thanks in advance.
Kodi is in the Play Store now, it works quite well as UpNP.
My main solution for this issue in my house is to install Plex on my server and pay for the 5 bucks for the Plex app on the TV.
Also after you do this you can set an external player (like MX player) to be the player instead of Plex.
MX has been playing MKV files for me after You turn on hardware+ encoder.
Thanks for the replies.
After trying a few apps, I ended up using Archos Player with the extra codecs, all free. Essentially it works like BSPlayer like I'm used to and works perfectly. :good:
Hi,
Was hoping for some recommendations of which media player to install, as using external storage seems to cause mx player to freeze when going back through sub folders on an external drive after watching something on it, and kodi looks to be better, primarily with its dts support unlike mx player, but is lacking settings to permanently disable/enable subtitles except through the players overlay, and as soon as I do that I can't get rid of it during playback, unless I am doing something wrong? Any other recommended apps to use, especially free streaming tv apps, though I will be using the pro more as a media player to be honest, as it supports hevc at 4k properly unlike my old droidbox which was a great little player and was always cool to the touch compared to the pro, which I assume is due to the fact that the pro just generates a lot more heat due to far more powerful components? Plus in regards to kodi, using the official shield remote once I access the menu overlay during playback I can't get rid of it when done, anyone know why/what setting is required to change it?
Dave.
Since the Nexus 6p doesn't come with a video player (besides the photo app). Can someone recommend a good video player app which will just show the folders with the video. I have a bunch of videos for different shows on my phone and I'd like one that groups by folder instead of just showing all the files in one big page.
Thanks
If I'm understanding you correctly then MX Player should work for you. Let's say you create a folder for every different show you have then MX will show all those folders and how many video files are inside.
I 2nd MX player. That's what I use, and it handles many different formats of video & audio only material

I use ES File Explorer, which has a built in media player that has worked fine so far.
MXPlayer is my go to. Especially if you need the xda DTS & DOLBY audio codec fix!
Thanks all, I'll look into getting it once I get enough rewards cash (it's pretty pricey).
VLC
MX Player hands down... tried them all. The only thing that would make it better is being able to look at network drives, but I can get around that issue easily by opening up the videos with a file manager that can look at network files.
Yep, MX Player, been a user for awhile.

HI
I’m a many years user of Kodi on Shield. But now I’m starting to think of going away, if it is possible to almost keep the “same” feel of it.
I use Emby as my “server”, for info.
Is there a way to setup Android TV launcher to act more like Kodi?
This is most important for the movies and series sections.
In Kodi I have menus for Unplayed movies, Wife’s playlist (Emby playlist), new movies, all movies and so on.
Is there a way in the Android launcher to add shortcuts as I do in Kodi for the playlists, and new movies and so on?
I will and can change back to Plex, if this is better for Android Tv launcher and shortcuts, playlists etc.
I really like Kodi, but because of the reason below, I have started the search for other solutions. And Kodi as a launcher would be great, does not look like that is possible without coding an app myself, and doesn't get updates and so on.
I’m using Shield as mentioned over for Kodi and all other streaming apps.
This sort of works well, because there are many possibilities in Kodi for adjustments and so on. But in Android TV on Shield it’s not so good any more. If you use another app like HBO, Kodi almost shuts down all the time. It has to start up again, and that is not a good way to use Kodi, it gives too much waiting time and is annoying.
I think the main problem with this, is that Kodi is not coded to always run in the background, so it always closes. :-(

I have Kodi running as my launcher.
I used Adb to side load the Launcher Manager (Android TV version) app from this thread and to also disable the stock launcher on my shield.
