My 80-year old brain is not working well, and I'm not very adventurous anymore. I have a Pixel C still running 8.1.0 and I'd really like to upgrade it to at least Android 9 (or 10 with a reliable build). So is there anyone around (preferably in San Diego) who would update my tablet or even guide me over the phone. I've installed custom ROMs on lots of
phones, so I'm familiar with the process. And I'd pay a reasonable amount for the help. - Sherry

My older son handed down his MyTouch to my daughter. Even after factory reset, it's got some stability (and battery life but that's fixable) problems.
So I'm seeking recommendations: What would be a ROM that's featureful enough for an 11 yo girl to send texts and install some (cr)apps?
Clearly, it doesn't need to active backgrounds or hell even be a current release (so long as it's stable duh). But would need to be able to use Play. I mainly just want her to be able to use the thing without it blindly rebooting a couple times a day. Of course, I realize that the current stability problems are just as likely (prob more so) to be her installing everything under the sun as it is the os on an old phone.
2ndly, if this doesn't work out, I may drop some $$ and get her a low-end phone after the tax refund comes. I fig $100 should cut it. recommendations on that would be great as well.
lastly, I'm not skittish about doing this. I've been around a while, but I lurk (=. However, I would prefer if the rom had decent instructions. (A wall-of-text paragraph with 14 steps buried in it is hard for anyone to follow.)

I highly recommend SteppNasty's ICS port. It's stable and it's speedy. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2114184
by far the most stable ROMs for this device are going to be Gingerbread ROMs. ICS+ just wasn't intended for this device by HTC, and while we've got most of the issues fixed, there will still be some sort of bug/problem that will happen.
now depending on you/your daughter's taste...
if you want barebone stock, go with Cyanogenmod 7
if you want a bit more than stock (more eye candy), check out any MIUI GB ROM
if you want to stay on Sense because of the eye candy, i would recommend Android Revolution HD, however, check out the other Sense Gingerbread ROMs as well (Virtuous Unity, Leedroid, DARKSIDE to name a few). not trying to brag or show off, but i do personally think that Android Revolution HD is the perfect and "most stable" Sense ROM available. all credits given to mike1986 the original developer, all my team and i did was port this great ROM over to the MyTouch 4G.
Your humble developer, Saranhai
thanks guys. I have something to work with. of course, I realize that even the most stable roms turn to crap if a preteen girl installs all kinds of junk on it.
If anyone else has thoughts, i'm happy to hear them.
Title is descritive, isnt it? Pleaseeee!!
Thanks in advance
In a rather unusual development for a Nexus device, I don't think there are any remaining active maintainers.
It requires very little effort (good opportunity for a new maintainer who is willing to spend some time learning), but it absolutely requires someone to own the device - I used to be in this category but I gave my grouper to family 2 years ago.
I see this is live now. Has anyone tried it? If my tablet weren't all setup for my kids to play with, I would have flashed it. I still may down the road, but good to see a rom for it too. Thanks!

running under multirom for last 2 days. Very basic in terms of features at the moment. Runs pretty well though. No FC's. No issues with any of my apps. Also been running one of the custom kernels which helps with a bit more speed.
Hi!
I'm a new Nexus Player-user!
I just picked up mine from the store and have a few questions before I dive into it all.
Mainly, what will I gain by rooting and installing CyanogenMod 12.1 on my Nexus Player? And maybe more importantly, will I lose any functionalities?
Is it OK to update the original firmware (if there is one) before I root and install CM12.1?
And last, is there anything else I should know or think about?
Any answers are helpfull!
Thanks in advance!
Over 60 have read, and no reply? :crying:
I'm just sitting and looking at this thing, itching to give it a try, but I don't dare until someone can answer my questions... Sorry for being such a stupid noob. I'm just scared to screw something up.
I just got mine as well. But i have a several year history of tinkering with android. As efrant taught me long ago with my gnex, read and understand first, tinker later. If you know exactly what you are doing and how youll recover in the event of failure, then you are set. If you just use toolkits and run into issues, most more experienced users will not have the patience to help the impatient. So... Have you booted it up and used the stock software yet? How do you like it? Anytime you change firmware you are gaining and losing. It can change the whole experience. Since you just got it though, one suggestion is to fastboot unlock it now, so you're not concerned with backups and losing data later. There is a guide around here.. Cyanogenmod has been around a while and its definitely worth trying their software. They likely have root in their firmware and you do not need to install it separately. Also, there is no real reason to update your rom if you are just going to swap it with cyanogen anyway.. I primarily use root for elevated privileges and tinkering. Until you know you need it, you can hold back. So onto my experience: I just hooked up my nexus player the other day and found it unbearable. Basic setup and it was unbelievably slow. The reason seemed to be the attempt to update its software in the background. So last night i did it manually, and boy what a difference it made. But it still is a bit of a letdown. My initial goal with it is to get xbmc back up and running for streaming. I have not fully investigated it yet, but i suggest you also look into it as another aftermarket option. See tvaddons.org; you are looking at kodi or tvmc.
I do have the Nexus Player rooted and a custom ROM. So far a bit better use of side loading applications and cloud applications. I like the flexibility.
Sent from my Nexus 7 using XDA Free mobile app
Thanks for your reply guys!
I've unlocked bootloader and rooted my NP, but nothing more than that.
I do like the stock rom quite a bit, especially the GUI, but I feel VERY LIMITED with such little storage space.
It's very off-putting that the voice search feature does not work with CM-12.1 yet, since I like it a lot, but not having the possibility of expanding my storage space with a usb stick with the stock rom is a BIG let down.
So it really comes down to what I value the most...
Is CM-12.1 the only custom rom that has a GUI that's very similar to the one on the stock rom?
Is voice search broken on all custom roms out there?
I am more of a iOS-guy, and this is really the first time dipping my toes into tinkering with Android.
give the dev preview of android m a shot. natively you can browse now additional memory. definitely better if you like the leanback experience. all other custom roms are giving more a complete android experience. as said, try the dev preview m. it surprised me a lot. of course there are some bugs in there but it let us hope to come more...
Much like the rest of other guys say. A custom ROM will give you a more "full Android OS" experience. I upgrade to 6.0 (M Preview) and must say the experience is great. I was able to use an OTG cable with multiple outlets to connect a USB keyboard/mouse combo and a 32GB flash drive I had laying around. The experience is great and works wonderfully.
Can this device run full Android apps with the stock firmware or is it limited to TV apps?

Of course it can. You need to sideload them and use a mouse to have good control within them though.

I know this is a little bit late and time has passed but the launcher for CM12.1 depends on what you select, and if you install GAPPs for android TV.
All custom ROMs built from the AOSP base have a broken voice search due to it being a proprietary binary driver with no open source component. Unless someone builds a wrapper or reverses and reimplements the driver this will continue for a long time.
It is great
Just get android 6
Hi all,
Does anyone know what roms are compatible with the Tab A 10.1 2019 version? I see a lot of roms for 2016 version but not for the 2019.
Running stock Nexus, and I don't have any complaints except that you hardly can customize it yourself. I have a bought icon pack but can't use it for example.
Greetings Rick
I've actually just flashed a number of ROM's for this baby in the last few weeks - there are plenty to play with.
I settled on this as I think it was the best overall:

Have fun.
Thank you for the time to respond Where are you looking for when finding a Rom. Im on Nexus stock aosp based. But there are still some things I would like to see different. As I only use the tab for 1 game. Still chrashes, issues with keyboard. So I don't mind customizing it.
Greetings from Holland
Yeah it's a good tab, for its price. So I'm kinda buffels by the fact that there is hardly one on this forum.

There are two other custom ROMs for the T510. LOS 17.1 and a Nexus version based on Android 9. I've been using the Nexus 10 one for months and have never had a crash or keyboard problem. Maybe it is the one game you play that has the problems.

Always a posibility, still i seem to have a habbit of trying stuff out.
Don't know if I should post this under OP but it's in the same line of it. Like I said love to tinker around with software for 10 years ago or something I got a budget phone that in the end would not update Android anymore so that was the moment I came to the conclusion that my model then was a better version of the original. Kinda like in this case, tab a 2016 and 2019 will differ in chipset etc. But tab a is tab a. So I started to go head in and toke a dive into the Android world, met some interesting people including the legendary Mr Carvalho. But... Im not posting this because I like to write or want you to read a book so let's cut to the case, im reading up a bit with customizing etc. Starting where I left off, installing ADB drivers again MTK drivers C++ all that good stuff. But then I kept reading, and correct me if I'm wrong but did you guys crack the code? The sometimes impossible to port source code? Or am I getting that GSI wrong. The software from the OD will be used to power the custom Rom so finding and combining code is almost a thing of the past? I tried to flash one last night to see if it really was that easy. Managed to get the tablet into a recovery bootloop. Installed the Nexus Rom again now the Los version. So I guess I did something wrong I think to know what it whas but before I make a paperweight from it, I think it's better to ask first.
So GSI, restrictions? Things to look for. Is it possible on this device?
Device is Treble ready
Supports A/B Arm
So it should right?
Off topic. This is a question for the Nexus Rom. Why are some Samsung features disabled? Like screen recording. Used multiple now all end up recording 0 or no internal audio. Other Samsung features like the camera, mail service etc. Only thing I'm searching for is the screen recording function with internal sound. Anny way to enable it or an alternative?
Thanks in advance.

Utter nonsense. The only thing "Tab A" tablets have in common is the name.

So I would like to start by saying great job, I agree with house things where set in place in the long run, I would say lets wait on future runs, just because it was future runs that caused an issuee. Either way thqanks for the recommendations but this seems like it will be a judge appointed issue., i appreciate everything but+
I use the Nexus, Android 10, AOSP-based rom from Magedanz. I works great, I tried LOS 17.1 and LOS based Nexus as well, but settled on the AOSP based due to the lack of support of the 400GB microsd I have in my T510 from LOS and the LOS based Nexus rom not able to read my microsd. The AOSP rom read it just fine and was able to format it correctly.
Would like to point out that Shift phone has just released there new phone 6mq with changeable battery, Jack stick and Micro SD card! The 3 main things a mobile NEED to even be interesting to look at.
I have now rooted the Shift 6mq phone with Magisk and we have a dirty TWRP working as well, although still having issues on the later but it is in its beginning stages of this phone. SHIFT6mq - Bootloader unlock / Root / Custom Recoveries / ROMs | SHIFTPHONES
Would anyone be willing to look at the Shift 6mq so we can further support this little German company who goes against the stream of nonsense, it has Android 10 out of the box, they are still working on a Google version and a Light version so you have the choice.
But it is looking good, finally a contender to the old LG V20 - which I have had for my daily driver for 4-5 years or so. A wonderful phone although getting old and it had its shortcomings as well, like the screen Ghosting and not easy to root if even possible.
The LG V20 was the last flagship phone with the 3 essentials - and now we FINALY have something to take over from here!
Would love to see the community support this new mobile and help these guys out, I have toyed and tinkered around with it - and it is possible to pretty much ruin it and get it up and running again although a lot of hooping around, but it can be done already.
So if anyone have the know how, or interest to support a little company who at least stands on some sanity with there phone - it would be nice to see LineageOS support for it.
I don't know much about stuff like that, I just do some newbie rooting and such at the moment, having had to root my new used V20 F800K that already sadly does ghosting. And my new Shift 6mq which I got 10 days after my V20 F800K rescue boat came around to relieve my old V20 H990N Hongkong version as it was and is falling apart. I did not know when I would receive my Shift 6mq but it came around 10 days after I got the new used Korean version of the LG V20. Anyway at least it could be rooted, so that will help me get all my applications over to the new Shift 6mq, which is another milestone that needs to be walked.
Anyway, if any programmers are out there, or people who knows stuff, it would be a nice project for some sanity to support this new phone from Shift, seemingly a good replacement for the old LG V20. I still need to get it up and running and see how it works in daily use, but it looks like it will be a good phone for the next 5 years for me.
Not a surprise it is faster then the LG V20, benchmark shows a good leap - 128 GB of internal space although the system itself is 21 GB compared to 9 GB on the LG V20 which had 64 GB. 8 GB of Ram, although not sure what I need that much for, but I could not live without more internal space as I am always using it so quick on the LG V20, books, maps and such takes a lot of space and what not. One of the reasons I disqualified the Fairphone 3 when looking at both phones, only having 64GB of internal memory, is just not going to do it for me. I actually ended up just ordering another LG V20 but because of corona nonsense they would not send it to me, being much cheaper solution. And needing a new phone, I had to then go with the Shift 6mq which was 5-6 times as much compared to the 4-5 year old LG V20. Anyway, if a phone does not have the 3 essentials, I won't buy it, not interested!
Anyway...
So guys, anyone up for looking at it? If you need any help I am here. I have toyed around with it, and breaking it, I can get it up and running again. I've done it a couple of times now... And still doing some testing on TWRP which seems to have a failing bug that I need to report.
But in any case, would love to see anyone starting working on it.
Dearly regards
- Darkijah
You did a great thing by using a phone for over 4 years. These are why companies are making better phones with long term support - if you can replace the battery or screen for cheap, and your carrier doesn't offer you a "deal" on a new phone, why would you want one?
Now me on the other hand, in 6 years I've daily driven 5 phones and 8 versions of Android, including 4 custom ROMs.
HOWEVER, I did it sustainably - using only phones given to me for free with the exception of the Moto G and a used S10e.
