************ As of August 23 2013 I have reverted and downgraded my version back to 4.1.2 ***************************
Battery Drain and S-pen issues just kiiled all the fun.
Building a list of changes / updates I have noticed as to what i see as new after updating from 4.1.2. (i.e before i get used to it and forget what it was like).
A lot of you with other devices might already be familiar with changes, but hope it helps who only have this as their primary device.
If anyone has any of their findings to share i'd be glad to add to this list.
*** Major or Generic Changes (most should be aware of these):
1. App to SD Option available. (right now my 64 GB External SD is already full, so haven't tested it fully, but it worked for some and was unable to move on a few.)
2. Different Lock Screen with editable widget region. and an additional effect instead only the ripple as in previous.
3. Gone are those special home screens what you would get for your accessories (or hidden as I could not find them). Like taking out s-pen or plugging in a headphone. (seems like the notification bar shows those recommended shortcuts now)
4. Different & kinda new notification & toggles menu system.
5. Adapt Display Option Added to Screen Mode (Settings > Display >Screen Mode). This is default now. My prior setting used to be movie.
6. DayDream: Seems like a Customizable ScreenSaver, however I haven't been able to preview or activate it yet. (any tips when/how it launches).
7. A Bit louder audio comparatively on headphones. I cannot confirm this or if anything changed at all, but i feel my earphones a bit louder now at full.
8: S-pen : Noticing a tiny bit of offset (note: tiny like perhaps 0.1 mm - 0.2 mm towards top right (1 'o'clock).
****** Confirmed *****
9: Little bit different text rendering (perhaps a new engine). The Make text legible (enhance) option makes much more pronounced difference as compared to before. Everything is a more Darker and more anti aliased. Might take a day or 2 getting used to. Tried few Pdf's and CBR(comics) I feel them a bit different (little muddy, or as said above needs eyes to adjust).
10: Responsiveness seems fine.
9 ****** There is a new travel wallpaper slide show setting in lock screen wallpapers © pakure
*** App Specific Changes
1: The accuweather widget (default on 4.1.2) is gone.
2. Gallery : A New Layout and structure. (New Look) any new features ? remains to be seen.
3: Stock Music Player: A bit different Look and feel (perhaps a global touchwiz update)
3.1: Smart Volume option : Adjusts All tracks to similar volume level. Nice.
3.2: Tube Amp Effect added to Sound Alive. Although Audio purists would likely have everything disabled, I am kinda liking this on earphones. It has a bit of fullness to it.
I am not sure if they are adding any tube saturation/ additional Harmonics to make it should warmer, but sound has more of a glued together feel to it (as opposed to expanded/ wide).
3.3: Song Info can be edited after going into details.(I am not certain if it was already there in previous, however it looks more noticeable and prominent now.)
4: Stock Video Player: Again a bit different look and layout.
4.1: The video Color Settings option is gone. (In Older version you could choose amongst normal, cool , and warm setting) (my preference being warm) but perhaps, the Global Screen mode settings takes care of that.
4.2: Some of the videos failed to play (I think I was able to play them before on stock player). Might be due to different codecs per regional release.
4.3: Option for Outdoor visibility is gone from video settings. (not that I cared for it any bit)
*** UPDATE **** 15 August 2013
4.4 : Definitely Sharper videos (sd content) in stock video player ( as compared to mx player) as well as videos have more solid blacks than 4.1.2 firmware.
5: Few New apps (Might be that I have access to them now because of a different region Generic firmware) : Video Hub and Music Hub and their integration with Stock players.
watch-on and few other apps (video hub) don't work as likely my region is not currently supported.
*** Old Issues Findings/Reports
1: Screen Freeze : I did not have that issue in the previous firmware and I don't have that issue in current. Others might like to add.
2: Battery used to jump from 96% or 98% to 100% : Needs further testing/ long runs. (my tablet is mostly on AC anyway).
*************** More Additions/Revisions will Come as Discovered.

Yes, my version of flash player is 11 and it's working with stock browser. Though stability is a bit dicey it seemsand more often that not is crashing.
On further tests i would say, stock browser does not like flash anymore. Firefox still plays ball.
My Note used to freeze all the time, especially using whats app. with 4.22 it hasn't frozen once.
not sure i like the new darker over rich colours.
battery seems to be draining more, but not 100% sure
On my N5100 I have an issue with alarm after update. There is no alarm when smart cover is closed.
I've checked it several times.
Does anyone have the same problem?

Is SAMSUNG LINK working for anyone? I tried it just once on PC+S4(works fine) + NOTE8 - but note8 refuse to connect. Tried lots of things to do, clean data. removed and readded Samsung account but no luck at all. Other things working fine - like GroupPlay with S4...Altough will probably never use them but wanted to try it just once.

Go to app manager and for Samsung link uninstall the updates.
then launch samsung link (factory version it reverts to). Update it again when it asks you to from samsung app store. that should likely fix for you as did for me.
Anyone have some before and after update quadrant scores. Been waiting for the OTA update on my N5100. Just ran a quadrant on my stock 4.1.2 and seeing a score of 6779, what score are you getting on the 4.2.2 update?

Confirming a offset with s-pen (for me about 1-2 mm at 3 O´Clock)
A additional issue: The Samsung MultimediaDock will not recognized as a Dock. Nor HDMI nor Mass Storage. Only Charging woks fine.

sorry i forgot to mention that my n5100 is rooted with cm10 installed on it and cwm
Well you have to flash using ODIN.
There is no flashing zip currently.

Mine Is Un-Rooted, and always has been factory Stock. (never ever rooted in past either).
I can't use that app without root, and i don;t think i can check into system/app unless i am rooted either.
however the wdiget went missing from homescreen and is nowhere to be found is app drawer widgets.
Personally weather widgets don;t matter to me but the s-pen issue does. Now I could just open the pen up and calibrate it (physically) but feel it's samsung who needs to fix this up along with few other things.
btw what is the procedure (if any) to revert to previous version.
Well the widget is just an APK. So you are correct in that it doesn't matter.
Not sure what you mean by revert to previous version?
If you want to flash back to 4.1.2. You need to use ODIN. Put your device into download mode and flash the correct 4.1.2 firmware for your device from sammobile. (Make sure you have the correct CSC for your region)
Apparently all the Spen app does is change a setting from right hand mode to left hand mode then back to right hand mode... and vice versa.
Just offering you some solutions because Samsung solutions will take some time if they come at all.

Thanks,
My S-pen offset is not so troublesome as it's off by just a little, (unlikely but it could also be that different regions releases have different offset compensation built into them).
I don't know much about csc or anything but if I download the sammobile official firmware release for my region (INU) india (4.1.2), would that be all it would take to downgrade from 4.2.2?
Yes granted your device was originally from india. You could flash any of them but you want to flash the one for your region so that all carrier bloatware and carrier based services work.

Hey community,
Does anyone have a solution for this..
I use a rooted Nexus 4 with Cyanogenmod 11 m1.
It is rooted, has busybox & secure settings.
My complete software is up to date and my device works now with ART.
But this shouldn't really matter
I use HDMI (Arliberator) for my Appradio & HDMI for my Home-Entertaiment (music) too.
And i like to customize the sound with Viper4Android, but there is no menu .. The menu for the phone speaker is working with HDMI, but there are'nt many options..
And they aren't usefull..
Does anyone have an idea?
Can change any variable for Aux in my Tasker-task for arliberator.. Maybe Viper4Android then will think, it is a Aux-connection
Or does anyone know a modificated version with more panels?
Pleaaaase..
Give me idea's and/or solution's.
And sorry for my english

Hey,
That was my first step after the installation of the drivers
Ok I'm an audiophile musician, as many of you I think
and, though stock audio just works I'm trying to look at audio mods here
I looked in many threads and I can see that ARISE is very well known, supported and loved, but looks like is very customizeable and confusing....
dolby atmos in apps section doesn't work well, it lowers volume and...well, I can't feel any improvement
viper4android should be nice, but I never tried it
now...what are you using? things that work nice and stable, with quality enhancements....don't need thousands of profiles or eq since I'm a big fan of flat sound (the way is meant to be listened)
Thank you for your attention, once we'll have some satisfactory answer I'll make a poll and a general AIO audiophile thread with all working options as referral.
EDIT: ARISE audio system simple guide
http://forum.xda-developers.com/android/software/r-s-e-sound-systems-auditory-research-t3379709
go to this thread, don't be scared, just search for lastest deuteronomy zip and flash it
you will find a nice app called viper4arise that will let you manage settings separately for every audio output with simple and nice UI
you can also import presets and plugins, but it's secondary.
Im going to tune in on this. Would like to install ARISE on my nexus (comes with Viper4Android) but there are so many versions to choose from, it gets a bit confusing.
Any tips on which ARISE works for our phone on 7.1.1 ?
ARISE is the right answer. It's customizable for true audiophiles but simply flashing it seriously improves audio quality without you having to tweak anything. Seriously. I know there are several zips for ARISE. Just make sure you get the most current stable release (Deuteronomy 2.3.3) and I usually go for the smallest zip file because I don't need all of the extra stuff like Dolby Atmos and whatnot. It comes with a modified version of the Viper4Android app that allows you to tweak settings to your liking. The app, by default, is setup for novices or people that don't need to get too specific with any settings so you can boost bass, enable clarity options, spectrum extension, etc. by toggling the switch next to it. Simple as that.

so. you suggest to flash deuteronomy (lastest) and...just that? what about plugins, the prop editor that comes with hell of documentation...profiles and stuff...none of that?
if you're sure it works, is stable enough, simple and it has graphic (not text editing or changing files on system) settings through an app....I'm going to test it right now....

I never did any of that. I just flashed, booted up, went into the ARISE V4A app and toggled the options I wanted. There was an immediate difference in audio quality. You can toggle the options while playing music and hear the difference.
EDIT: Oh. Make sure to disable MusicFX or whatever that nonsense is. Settings > Apps > Show system apps > MusicFX and disable.

EDIT: Ok guys I tried ARISE and it works damn well, I can manage audio settings without profiles since I know how to tune that, but main mportant thing is that it works.
Now, regarding higher bitrate? or anything else?

Really depends on what you're playing the music on. I usually enabled Spectrum Extension (0.4 strength) as a lot of my music is 320kbps MP3 and Bass Boost (default settings) for Bluetooth and Headset (3.5mm jack) while enabling "Speaker Optimization" for the speaker. I mainly use the bluetooth audio in my car and while my car stereo isn't that great but I did throw some Kickers in the front doors. Spectrum Extension is awesome, but make sure to disable it if you're listening to any FLAC files.

I really only listen to music through headphones/AUX in the car so I edited some of those to the audiophiles info in the post. I turned on the spectrum extension and will see how I like it since it's all streamed from spotify (no flac).

Because it interferes with ARISE / V4A. If you're completely stock with no audio mods there's no point to disabling it.

From what I have read, it looks like root might not be required for the Dolby Atmos software. I really like that EQ. I have a T-Mobile S8+ with locked bootloader, so I am hoping there is a way to install the Dolby software without root. If anyone knows if this is possible, instructions and a link to the latest version would be appreciated, as there are a lot of different versions floating around.
any updates for Dolby atmos on any android no root required?
I had it installed in my Galaxy S8 T-mobile but it makes no difference. In fact, it only gives it s deep base but not a loud sound.
This is how it works :
Once installed, just open Samsung music or Google music and a pop up window will show up saying that dolby atmos is running in the background. I tried it but didn't like it. You can try and maybe works for you. Here is the app.
Works... sort of

Installed on my Galaxy S8 SM-G950FD there's no way to configure it though cause the equalizer option still only brings up Samsung Sound Alive. Is there a way of getting rid of sound alive without root? Any updates on this? The built in Samsung EQ is complete garbage. The Dolby EQ significantly improves both the sound and the level.
Isn't there a way to give specific apps root access via ADB without actually rooting the phone?

I could not get it to work and looks like in all MIUI roms it's crippled. There is a Bluetooth unlock in lockscreen menu but it's only available with whitelisted Xiaomi gear it seams. Kinda confirmed on other MIUI forums basically they replaced it with their version and only for their devices. The prompt shows only the first time you pair a new device and you can add it but it does nothing and no way to get back in. I tried to trigger all activities from google service framework but could not get back in, only with new BT device will and i ran out of devices to try. No location trigger works

Ok, installed, granted root access, defined my home as trusted place
Locked the screen - it still asks me for pin, cannot unlock without
(I know how to use it, it works perfectly for me on Huawei Mate 9 but here cannot get it to skip entering my pin when I am at home and want to unlock the screen)
QFJEUXM 11.0.5

It doesn't work on MIUI... AFAIK there is no fix.

Unfortunately, true. I was surprised when
@Tizio.Qualunque claimed a 'solution'?!
I've seen many threads for Mi 9T and other Xiaomi phones but never seen anybody claiming that he/she set it up to to really unlock without a pin (or how to do it).
Btw, before I installed this Smart Lock app as he suggested, I got pop-ups by Google Smart lock several time, asking me if I want to set up my (home) location for smart (un)locking (now, during Corona I'm almost all the time at home and unlock the phone by pin tens of time during the day, because unfortunately FOD is very unreliable). So I always confirmed that I want, but still it never worked for unlocking
I can only hope that Xiaomi maybe fix it for MIUI 12, but frankly I don't believe.

Yes. A huge minus.
Use face unlock. Use Mi band or some kind of Mi watch (bluetooth unlock is limited to only one device... ). It's stuipid - I know. But this is only think you may do if you want your phone to be unloceked when you are near.
Eventually you may try Tasker.
I've been dealing with this since miui 6.
As others have said, MIUI has removed all access to smart lock. The only reason you get the notification is because it's served by Google Play services. They can't touch it.
Even if you access the menu by root, it still won't work because MIUI uses its own lock screen, not the stock lockscreen.
They keep kneecapping the Android features, and later introduce them as "new". The only people who actually like MIUI are people who've never used stock Android
More examples from my experience in MIUI 6 :
1. They didn't have face unlock or bluetooth unlock. But Android had it since the previous 2 versions. They added it in the next MIUI as a flagship feature. And it's still bad. It unlocked for my brother's face.
2. Split screen. One generation late.
3. Picture in picture mode. Dunno if it's available even now

As a user come from nexus and Xperia (like pure android with sony exclusive options) devices, miui only have eye catching ui and lots of bloat ware!
User experience (UX) is so bad. You can't find some options easy (for old and pro android user since 2010, i search in settings menu to find some features! How new android user can use miui i don't know!!!)
select widget so hard, no app drawer, lots of bugs, lags (frame drop) anywhere. MIUI good for peoples come from iOS to android. (Animation, Animation, Animation. Not smooth ux, not easy to use ROM)
I bye Xiaomi phone for good hardware and great price.
Don't forget we are in android. For any feature we can find a nice third-party app.
I flash Pixel Experience Plus...
If google not make ugly pixel, and sport it with high end hardware and good price (Nexus Phone!?) , i never bye any mi or galaxy phone! OnePlus can be an option for professional android user too, but not find easy in my country.

For the matter of fact, App Drawer is supported (since MIUI 11?), see screenshots
But lacking Smart Lock: On body detection, Trusted places and the fact that Smart detection does not work for general Bluetooth devices (but only maybe for Xiaomi gadgets) is a big issue

Yes, support with alpha system launcher. Not official, you must side load alpha app!
Miui 12 support official apps drawer...

NOT really
I'm using QFJEUXM 11.0.6 (previously 11.0.5 and 11.0.3 I think), I never used any Alpha system launcher or whatever
Ok, I cecked now to my System apps updater History, you can see that MIUI System Launcher got updated 4+ months ago to support App Drawer

Not fixed in MIUI 12 / Android 10.
Makes it impossible to do hands-free calling in the car., since you can't make calls anymore with the screen locked.
Only ways I can see around it is:
1. Keep your phone unlocked,
2. Have face unlock set and place your phone where it can "see you" at all times.
3. Get a cheap Mi band or some other MI product, add it as a trusted device, and keep it charged in your car.
This is utter nonsense from Xiaomi.
With MIUI 12, Android 10 and by using Root Smart Lock app:
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=net.rachel030219.smartlocklauncher
I can setup my trusted place and it remembers, but still it doesn't keep the phone unlocked at my home (I must use the fingerprint or pin)
I was thinking if some permissions are missing
I tried it on MI11 with MIUI 12.5 and with the app mentioned, but still not working :-(
