Currently:
Android 7.0 (rooted and unlocked)
XT1687
Build NPNS 25.137-93-18
Magisk + Youtube Vanced module
TWRP 3.3.1 (latest as of this post's date)
I read in a forum topic somewhere that I need to upgrade to the above build first before upgrading to Android 8.x+, but I can't find it anymore. I see these stock downloads and I'm wondering if I should go that route - OPS28.85-17 (Android 8.1 Oreo), but I don't do this very often and I'm always worried I'll brick my only phone. My questions are thus:
Is the OPS28.85-17 firmware a viable upgrade option for me?
If so, am I correct in assuming Magisk/Youtube Vanced work similarly with the new Android version?
Is there a custom ROM you recommend that has a very easy way for me to get Magisk/Youtube Vanced and has automatic/easy updates?
I'm looking for simplicity. I've been through nightmare scenarios with custom ROMs in the past and I just don't have the emotional fortitude to frantically Google boot looping or corrupted backups.
Thanks!

The latest official firmware from Motorola is
8.1.0_OPS28.85-17-6-2
Here you can get it for every location, also older ones:
https://forum.xda-developers.com/g5...solve-imei0-explanation-t3825147/post80478329
To get Magisk and every module (like YT vanced) working it doesn't matter if you're on a custom ROM or stock firmware.
If you want to stay stock flash the 8.1.0_OPS28.85-17-6-2 firmware for your location as described in that post, root it with Magisk and flash the modules you like.
Btw, YouTube vanced is also available for unrooted devices.

The instructions in your post mention that the device will be wiped, but the instructions in the website I linked mention only needing to use `adb sideload` and it sounds like there's no wipe involved. Is there a way to upgrade from 7.0 -> 8.1 without wiping my data?

I don't know that sideload method but it seems that it's only updating via OTA update and not with a complete firmware what will cause problems while rooted.
If you want to keep your data just omit the command
Code:
fastboot erase userdata
or delete it out of the flashallO.bat.
Be aware that this can cause problems but a lot of users did it without any problems.

I'm currently sitting on the stock 6.0.1 B29 ROM for my 2017U A7, which is BL unlocked, rooted (SU 2.79-SR2), Xposed, with RootSwitch working, and TWRP.
What's the most simply way for me to upgrade to Nougat while maintaining those things listed above (aside from Xposed which I know doesn't support Nougat yet)?
Would I be forced to wipe my phone after installing Nougat in order to get everything working optimally?
Are there any issues or potential problems when upgrading that I should be aware of?

I have seen this thread: https://forum.xda-developers.com/axon-7/development/edl-emergency-dl-mode-twrp-unlock-t3553514
But I was wondering there was a more simple or directly method which doesn't involve EDL mode?
Edit: Nevermind, I don't know why I was expecting a more simple method, nothing on the A7 is more straightforward than that. I'd still like to know if I should be expecting any issues and if a full wipe is needed. For that matter will my phone be wiped anyway if I install that ROM?

I don't see any reason that you couldn't flash the universal bootstack and modem for the U variant from the Lineage thread, and then flash the stock Nougat ROM that's posted in the BadBoyz Magisk thread. Or just flash the bootstack and modem, then flash that ROM, being that it's stock and should still allow you to pass SafetyNet.

I would assume that it'd overwrite TWRP and I'd have to reinstall that again, and considering all the steps overall, that's not really any faster than jcadduono's EDL mode method.
Basically I was hoping there was a method that could just allow one package to be directly flashed and get it all done in one simple go to prevent any possible mistakes.
I said screw and installed the necessary program and drivers to flash the package with the Nougat bootloader + ROM + TWRP in EDL mode, it appears to detect properly, but I don't know if I want to go through with it until Xposed arrives. Between YouTube ads or grinding my face with a belt sander, I think the latter is less painful and horrific.
On the topic of SafetyNet, I currently pass it if I switch root off, yet Nintendo games won't install on my phone. They show as "incompatible with your device" the same as if they detect I have root. I have SUHide installed as well, but I have no idea how to check on that (where it is or how it functions for that matter). Installing the APKs from an alternate source just results in them crashing on start-up. Nintendo REALLY don't want root users playing any of their games.

But I don't know if I can just do that with jcadduono's package because IIRC TWRP doesn't automatically install things to where they should be, you have to manually select it (recovery, etc) and that package needs to be installed to multiple locations. Or maybe I have no idea what I'm talking about it.

Have been able to play Pokemon Go (my son, lol) and Fire Emblem on several Lineage based ROMs using Magisk. Can also get Android Pay to work (except for my bank currently not supporting it, but it doesn't show that I'm running any third party ROM or have my bootloader unlocked.) So, that might be the way for you to go, if you decide to try it out. As far as the EDL method, I've never tried it, but it does seem like an extremely useful tool.
Sorry went back and edited my post. It seems I was mistaken and I'd have to at least flash 2 packages by the EDL method, the TWRP package isn't the full ROM, just the bootloader and recovery. The only thing I can get working is Pokemon Go if I switch off root. Is Magisk working on the stock Nougat ROM as well?
Hello! Today I woke up with the notification of the new nougat update, Exciting! But I guess I have several problems: first of all, my phone is rooted, will I lose root acces? Also, I have TWRP installed. Yesterday I tried installing a security update on a device with TWRP and there was no way, will this happen to me? Another problem is my kernel, ElementalX. I've installed it since I had screen burn, but I don't really care about performing a fix everyday, but I know this kernel will prevent Nougat to install correctly. I do have a System Backup from when the kernel was not installed, and I read you can install 'just the boot.img' from TWRP restoring options but there's no "boot.img" file on my backup folder. I would like to add that I'm running on Marshmallow 6.0.1, rooted with SuperSU, using Xposed. The ElementalX kernel ver. is 3.10.84-ElementalX-G4-0.07 and the TWRP ver. is twrp-3.0.2-0-athene. Thank you all in advance!

You must return to stock recovery and stock kernel in order to flash the OTA. Yes you will lose root and will have to redo it once you are updated. The procedure for rooting in Nougat is different than on Marshmallow. There are numerous posts in this forum on the exact steps you need to take to accomplish all of this this safely. Take the time to read and research before you try anything. Don't just expect somebody to spoon feed you the info.

Thanks! I'm installing it tomorrow!
Hey guys, so I'm still pretty new at this whole android modding stuff (but I do have some background knowledge). I managed to unlock the bootloader, install TWRP, and root B29. However, now I wanna upgrade up to Nougat and eventually to the newest firmware available (either B19 or B25, not sure which one yet because I've heard quite a bit about B25's lack of fastboot). Anyways, I have no idea how to get there while still retaining my custom recovery and root. I tried using Flashfire, however, since MiFavor auto-installs after it finishes downloading the OTA, I can't stop it fast enough to launch Flashfire and install it through that. Could anyone point me in the right direction (or show me a guide) that would help me get to the newest firmware? Thanks!
P.S: This is slightly unrelated, but I was wondering, would I have to flash a custom bootloader+modem if I choose to flash a stock update through TWRP? I heard that if you choose to upgrade to a newer generation of android (i.e: Marshmallow to Nougat) through a custom recovery, that you'd have to flash an updated version of the bootloader+modem as well, but the thing is I'm planning on staying on MiFavor, so I'm not sure if it'd be necessary.

Followed this youtube guide --> How to Root Moto G4 Plus, Unlock Bootloader and Install Recovery!
(his youtube is gizmoddict, xda is restricting the link)
On last step I had to install the zip, and it would reboot into the phone, except it didn't.
xt1625 moto g4 is now stuck in a twrp bootloop and I have no idea what to do, help is appreciated.
If this is the guide in question: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dK2uacpjGwc then are you running stock Nougat 7.0 on your device?
If so, that guide is too old to be useful - the stock Nougat kernel appears to be much stricter with being rooted on and so you must use a custom kernel (e.g. ElementalX or vegito) to root successfully on stock Nougat. If you were running Marshmallow as in the guide, then it should have worked (though depending on the version of SuperSU you flashed).
I would try to copy a custom kernel to your device and attempt to flash that via TWRP, see if you can get your device to boot.

Yes that would be the link to the video, and I believe it came stock as 7.0 nougat? (not 100% on that)
Currently searching XDA for the custom kernel you mentioned, sounds like it should be easy to get working thank you.

In twrp and checked on pc to see that there is only twrp on internal storage, attempting to install ElementalX-G4-2.00.zip right now.
It worked thank you (atleast I think it is), currently selecting the MHz for the cpu frequency (obvious choice of stock). Appreciate the help.
NVM not working, now it won't boot into twrp. Not sure what in the world is going on anymore with this phone :/
NVM to that as well, 3rd time is the charm in twrp is back again.
Figured it out I think, it says "No OS Installed! Are you sure you wish to reboot?" after installing that zip file. Why does it say that?
Ok lineage OS is installed, super happy about it, thanks for suggesting that kernel thing otherwise I'd not have found this. Super easy to get rolling.
Hey! haven't seen anyone in this section for a while....
Why I am making this thread
So lately, I was looking through my old phones only only to find my old dusty Samsung Galaxy Note 2 lying around. It had already been rooted with kingroot... Needless to say, it's a spyware and my phone was drastically slow probably because of it.
Long story short, kingroot messed up all the files. Trying to install a working version of SuperSU gave me a headache. Finally, Magisk(v22.1) was supposed to work on the phone as it stated that it's the last version to support v4.4.2 but it doesn't actually work. It keeps on showing N/A whenever I launch it and a million different permutations that I had done in the process of rooting it using Magisk never worked.
This took me days, just jumping from one rabbit hole into another, finding old dead links which really made me so frustrated that at some point I wanted to throw the whole phone away.
That's why I'm creating this thread, so that I save the hassle for myself in the future and hopefully anyone who comes across this.
Updated rooting guide
This guide worked for my GT N7100 android version 4.4.2. It'd also probably work on other devices on other old phones which have an android version less than 5
Just make sure to backup everything before trying it.
Step 1. Flashing TWRP
Download the files from the following link
[TWRP]N7100 TWRP v3.3.1-0 ODIN FLASHABLE [23/05/2019]
Ok there we go this recovery is the latest 3.2.3-2 for t03g only don't flash this on t0lte(N7105). UPDATE: 12/04/2019: official support: https://dl.twrp.me/t03g TWRP 3.2.3-2 for N7100. Bugs: Format as F2FS doesn't work because the option isn't...
forum.xda-developers.com
Download ODIN
https://samfw.com/Odin/Odin3_v3.13.3.zip
Boot the phone into download mode(VOLUME DOWN + POWER KEY + HOME KEY)
Open ODIN and in BL choose the file that you've downloaded whose extension is or is similar to ".tar"
Click start
Step 2. Downloading and flashing Magisk
In here, you need to download a very specific version of Magisk, because anything above this version won't work.
NOTE: If you have installed any later versions of Magisk then make sure to uninstall them first, you can find out how to uninstall it from here(https://topjohnwu.github.io/Magisk/install.html#uninstallation)
Download THESE VERY SPECIFIC VERSIONS of Magisk and Magisk Manager from here
https://github.com/topjohnwu/Magisk/releases/download/v21.4/Magisk-v21.4.zip
https://github.com/topjohnwu/Magisk/releases/download/manager-v8.0.7/MagiskManager-v8.0.7.apk
Get into TWRP recovery mode and then flash Magisk-v21.4.zip
Reboot back into the device and install MagiskManager-v8.0.7.apk
That's the end of it, your device is rooted now
HOWEVER, once MagiskManager has been installed, it would say that there's an update available(a newer version) available that you could upgrade to.
NEVER EVER UPDATE!! Updating your Magisk version to ANYTHING above v21.4 will cause it not to detect root. This is a bug with Magisk and it would probably never get fixed because support for android <5 had been discontinued a long time ago.
In case you ever do accidentally update Magisk, you will have to uninstall the Magisk app and then install MagiskManager-v8.0.7.apk again.
To uninstall and unroot your device, download this file and flash it with TWRP
https://github.com/topjohnwu/Magisk/releases/download/v21.4/Magisk-uninstaller-20210117.zip
Where I got the links above from
https://github.com/topjohnwu/Magisk/releases/download/v21.4/
https://github.com/topjohnwu/Magisk/releases/download/manager-v8.0.7/
Magisk v22.1
This release is focused on fixing regressions and bugs. Check the v22.0 release notes if coming from older releases.
Note: Magisk v22 is the last major version to support Jellybean and Kitkat. Magisk v23 will only support Android 5.0 and higher.

Nope doesn't work as it wont be able to detect root at all, this is what had initially caused my headache to begin with
The last version of magisk that actually works on GT N7100 and probably any other old phone is the one that I linked in the thread

Thank you for the information.
I checked on Samsung Galaxy S4 Mini LTE i9195 (stock KK 4.4.2) and it works indeed at most version 21.4.
It is not possible to install MagiskManager-v8.0.7.apk because it is installed together with Magisk-v21.4.zip.
