Dark Sky Going Away - Samsung Galaxy S20 / S20+ / S20 Ultra Guides, News

I heard that Apple purchased Dark Sky and will be removing it from Android. The one thing I like the most about this app is that there is a widget that tells when it's going to rain and stop raining and it seems pretty accurate. Does anyone know any other weather apps that offer this?

Look here

I don't miss that app, for me there's so much better weather app like beautiful widgets or today weather

One thing missing from all these other apps that Dark Sky had was a widget that told you when it was going to rain next, the intensity and when it was going to stop. I have yet to find another program that offers this.

OverDrop has been cool.
I used Today Weather a while back, might have to circle back to that.
AccuWeather was always fine, as well.

Today weather is the best looking app, uses dark sky's server, for now.
AccuWeather has minute forecast, similar to dark sky, vtells when is going to rain and is very accurate.
Overdrop has the best widgets.

I appreciate everyone's feedback but I already know all this. It still doesn't answer my question which is none of these other programs offer a simple widget that you can look at to tell when it's going to rain and for how long like Dark Sky has. That is what I was looking for.

Looks like you have 2 options.
1) use the alternatives offered as that is what is available.
2) buy an Apple phone and continue using Dark Sky

Then in that case you can do what everyone else is doing. Wait for apps to fill the gap left by Dark Sky, I hope someone steps up. As you do that, download and try apps for yourself

I'm in the same boat as you OP - everyone giving suggestions for alternatives with pretty UI and radar maps, etc.
I don't care about any of that - the built-in weather works fine for all of that.
The killer feature that many people who've never used Dark Sky is ignorant to, is the fact that a notification alert would pop up and let you know "Severe rain in 20 minutes" or "Rain stopping in 45 minutes".
It was super useful to let me know when to plan to leave the house to avoid the wet, etc.
Dark Sky even had an Android Wear app - which was cool until I went Tizen with my Galaxy Watch .
So to help you out, OP, I've tested a bunch of weather apps, and the only one so far that threw a similar alert today like Dark Sky was Geometric Weather.
It was about a half hour after Dark Sky's popped up, and it wasn't as exact (May ran in the next few hours), but it was better than nothing.
Hopefully by the time the rains get heavy again, we'll have a good alternative.

I get the "rain starting in so many minutes" alert on AccuWeather. I'll try to remember and get a screenshot next time I get it.
BTW, AccuWeather does not have a "pretty" UI, at best is acceptable.
I got an alert yesterday on AccuWeather that I didn't get on Dark Sky. It was regarding the power of winds or something like that, I didn't really pay attention. Before the "Severe Weather Advisement" I got on every app I'm currently testing

How about RainToday ?
Edit : not sure it still exists
https://raintoday.fr.uptodown.com/android/telecharger

looks like they already removed it from play store even though they said it would be july 1st

Yes, it was a great weather apk .... if anyone else wanted to use it ... until they completely shut it down on Android ...

I totally agree with you OP. I think a lot of people have no idea how accurate Dark Sky & Arcus were for short term rain prediction.
The Dev of Shadow weather has said that it will offer these hyperlocal alerts but so far it isn't. Arcus say that, even though the Dark Sky API is available until 2021 they won't pay Apple to use it. Arcus works perfectly & it's a pity that someone doesn't adapt their app to the other available APIs.
Most radar data is free so it just need the app to read the rain radar & convert it into written messages.
I would pay a lot for an app that offers the same as Dark Sky & Arcus

I actually find the Accuweather Beta app pretty good but the widget sucks and it doesn't update often. There needs to be a way to set how often you want it to update and I wish it showed the 5-day forecast. As far as accuracy though, I find it spot on in my area.

But it doesn't offer anything comparable with Dark Sky or Arcus unless it gives notifications like " Rain starting in 20 mins stopping 8 minutes later" . AFAIK only Dark Sky & Arcus have ever offered this.

Yes it does, it has Minutecast and it will tell you. It works pretty well but like I said, the widget sucks.

Works quite well but no sound notification so you have to keep checking the phone.

I just got Beautiful Widget yesterday and its lovely. Yes I had to pay 1.78 Euros for it but well worth it. Might be an alternative if you can't get yours working.
You may need to go to the fancy widget config screen and uncheck the location box at the top and then 'set location'
Will no longer be greyed out. Set ur location and it should work. Did for me neway . . . .

Can someone post a video of beautiful widget running on their x10? I want to buy it based on what everyone is saying but I don't know much about how it actually looks
To be fair its a bit pointless showing you any pics of it cos its soooo skin-able that it would take 100's of shots to show you.
Its 4 colums wide and two deep, you have large clock display, day, date temperature and picture of the weather. The clock can be either in its own box with background or a see thru one so it sits over your wall paper nicely (which is what I have got!) The clock font and colour is hugely changeable, you just download more skins to your phone - free once you've made the initial purchase. The weather pictures probably have a dozen different settings. The text colour for the day date bit is entirely your choice.
It is 'beautiful' and for under £2 its pretty darn cheap for what you get.

Thanks for the great description
But with the imminent update to 2.1, is there any point in getting it now? We can just use the weather live wallpaper
Imminent do you know something we dont? Lol. Hadn't thought about that, but I'm kind of bad at waiting for stuff when I decide I want it. Typical impatient woman!

Weather Graphs

I have been patiently waiting for a weatherpanel like app for android.
I would gladly pay for a weather app with the 24hr and 7-10 day graph for temp and Precip. Humidity and wind would be a plus but not a must have.
custom web images with cache would also be nice. Storyr had a great start on iOS.
has anyone seen anything like this?
I mostly use these graphs:
(Example for The Hague in the Netherlands):
http://www.yr.no/place/Netherlands/South_Holland/the_hague/avansert_meteogram.png
It shows the weather for the upcomming 24hours.
- Cloudyness
- Amount of rain every 3 hours
- Temperature
- Amount of wind
- Wind direction
To bad its a little big for like a wigdet or something.
But maybe it will help you.
I like that. If it were in the united states I would have that bookmarked. another thing that would be missing is the ability to have multiple cities. But I really like that graph! It has everything I need on one page.
Check out Palmary Weather, it shows pretty much all that as far as I know. And it looks good too.

Better lock screen to show notifications?

I would like to show notifications on my lock screen like the iphone does. I am coming from an iphone and it bothers me I don't have this functionality. Is there a good replacement?
I would also like the phone to wake for a moment when a notification comes in. Any chance we can do this too?
I am coming from and iphone and while this phone seems great there are some things on the iphone that are simply more consistent. Not an apple fan boy though.
Any thoughts welcome! Thanks!
there plenty in the app store. Im sure other users here would be able to tell you the exact name...youll need to download a widget and put it on your lockscreen

App ideas?

Basically i want to temporally distance myself from my current apps and focus on something new and worth doing but i just can't think of something new and unique to create.
I also wouldn't mind either joining an open source project or just creating one but even then i wouldn't know what I'd like to do.
So i was just wondering if any of you fellow members and devs can think of any apps that you've either always wanted or just something you'd use everyday.
If you comment then bare in mind that despite developing pretty much everyday since, i have only been developing since around September last year....
So yeah any suggestions would be great as I'm pretty much out of idea's.

Go for a walk in the park or forest on a nice day and you'll get some ideas I have a list of a about ten apps or libraries I could start doing when I someday will have some time...
But if you're going open source, I don't mind to share some ideas:
What could be fun (but not extremely useful) would be an app centered around orientation, which allowed you to set orientation per app. Or just turning off lockscreen auto-rotate on lower end devices can speed things up a lot.
One thing I'm eager to find out if its possible (but will probably never get time to do it) is an app which forces a live wallpaper to be scrollable. Not a launcher, but maybe a live wallpaper itself which acts as a llayer above and loader for the real live wallpaper. It would just have to fool the display size in some way and then move the surface around on touches. Don't know if that is realistic or in any way fast.
One more exceptional idea, how about an app which monitors the currently running services an allows you to set notifications when a particular app starts a service (Facebook, etc) to see if a service consumes too much battery or runs unnecessarily.
Last but certainly not least, I would love to see an open source library which mirrors the Google Keep (now its called Notes isn't it?) like reminder time picker. I don't mean the standard time picker, but the two spinners to add a reminder tomorrow afternoon or next Monday for instance. I was thinking about doing that myself and already have an app idea using it, but probably won't have time for it.
Hope that helped and at least got you some aspects and directions to look into

Huawei's ridiculous "merge call log" (a good UNDO solution?) and a THEMES question

Huawei's ridiculous "merge call log" (a good UNDO solution?) and a THEMES question
There's a couple of problems I have with Huawei's stock "look"
It seems even when you download and change THEMES, certain stock apps (like contacts/messages) DO NOT change. I am stuck with the "light" theme (inside the app, not the ICON itself) and looking at the white and green text messaging screen. I want to change this, but there's no option to do so. If downloadable themes don't change this screen colours, what does?
On top of that, I HATE the fact they MERGE call logs by contact or by time. Why can they not leave as is...and UNMERGE in the order the calls were received/made?? is there any way of separating this outside of downloading a 3rd party app? Any good apps that do this?
RoOSTA
Please don't all get up at once...
You can build your own theme and change everything what do you want. If you spent some time with it you will learn it quick.
Can you elaborate on the steps to do this..?

- Call
Just use a secondary call program. HTC's Contacts/Call is utter trash, so we have been using Contacts+ since 5-6 years. You do have to turn off the annoying crap in it, but then it becomes the best caller program ever.
- White themes
I agree, but to be honest, only Samsung has these full themes.
Now you could either buy an S8 for 1.5-2x the price of a P10 Plus and enjoy themes (and have subpar specs)... or just wait for a new EMUI.
Or... I don't know.
See: https://forum.xda-developers.com/p9/themes/theme-dark-bloom-emui-5-0-dark-dialer-t3544249
Maybe it's possible to change things, I will try to look into this. The white theme annoys me too.
Most apps out there have their own themes, like 'light and dark' as the one-size-fits-all EMUI approach is backwards and retarded. Surely Huawei want their device owners to have some flexibility and creativity on their layout?
I will download Contacts+ and have a play with it...

Have you used the phone...and for how long?
1 and 2 week "reviews" people post that review battery life are never worth reading. Unless it drains significantly, and feels like 50% less use...then battery life is worth actually reviewing and comparing after the phone has been USED consistently for a goodf 3-6 months. Drain it completely, recharge it fully, then start drawing conclusions.
That's not a statement to support Huawei, but I'm not jumping the gun and concluding it has a horrible battery life...or NOT YET. Quality and use of parts is questionable with Hauwei and one reason why Samsung and Apple stand out.
After i rooted the phone I've installed greenify and get home from a 7am-6pm workday usually with 70-75% on LIGHT usage.
Anyway, at least my problems are fixable...most things are with root!
