There is an App available now that someone created: https://labs.xda-developers.com/store/app/sszb.s20.refresh
This mod works fine, but why SAMSUNG don´t add this option in the menu?? Cause screen damage??? I don´t know... I revert to 120 hz.
Installed and trying... Works perfect at the moment, will see if cause less battery drain...
I did the adb commands early this morning before work and battery life has taken a small hit, but the extra smoothness is absolutely worth it. I considered installing the app, but I probably won't go back to 60 Hz, and 120 Hz is overkill. I think 96 Hz is the sweet spot

I want a solution that forces everything to run @*120Hz...
everyone just concerned about battery life.
Is there any downside to this app?

I used this adb command:
adb shell settings put system peak_refresh_rate 96.0 && adb shell settings put system min_refresh_rate 96.0
Phone web browser confirms 96-97 HZ on testufo.com
Battery drain is still just over 1%/hour, so 96 Hz hasn't significantly impacted battery, but makes a *huge* improvement in scrolling smoothness and overall experience. Putting my S20+ next to my wife's Z Flip, you can definitely see the difference when scrolling the browser and Twitter. I won't be going back to 60 Hz, so I don't need the app. But I appreciate the work that went into the app, for those who want to use it.

I use tasker with selective 120hz over all time 96hz. All video streaming apps I use 60hz and rest set to 120hz. I tried all time 96hz but battery is better my way bc if I watch a lot of video, it won't run higher than 60hz so 96 or 120 is a waste. Using tasker profile for selective 120/60hz giving better /same battery as all time 96hz. And 120 is noticeably smoother than 96 at least to me.
The app caused some problem in my S20+ Snapdragon. I installed and set to 96 when I'm normally set to 120, and 6 hours later my phone had dropped 47% percent battery. Nothing else unusual running in background or foreground. No idea why and I haven't seen anyone else report it, so maybe a fluke. Just thought I'd mention it.

I can see a difference when scrolling text. So I went back to 120Hz for best smoothness. Don't care to much about battery life.

I have on my Folio found a way to tweak the nvrm_daemon, to increase the frame draw rate.. on folio its was limited to 51 frames (tested with app: fps2d) and this tweak increases it to 78 and it shows in the fps2d app too.
Just so everybody is clear on what this hack does.. its changing the framebuffer rate, NOT screen refreshrate.
see this link if you are not sure what that means
testing this with NeoCore benchmark we hit 56 frames.. so im guessing Viewsonic Gtab also could benefit from it, but as i don't have one i cannot verify if the screen type works with this change..
Anyone with just a small linux knowledge and knows how to replace a binary, please verify this , and you might have another enhancement if it works.
download the attached zip and put the nvrm_daemon into the /system/bin and do a chmod 755 /system/bin/nvrm_daemon on the file too.. (remember /system need to be r/w)
reboot and test with "fps2d" from Market, and let me know if you gain 78 frames too ... (i hope so)
it should work on all custom roms, as im sure, you all use the same Gtab binaries for your hardware here..
The updated nvrm_daemon ran successfully TnT Lite 4.1.0

Done avg=79 stdev=6.47

if you're willing to test, maybe use it for a day or 2, and let others know if its stable with the change..
its primarily a 2D and 3D games improvement, for regular use i doubt you see differences..
In GLBenchmark its not visible (probably best 3d engine testing tool), but other benchmarks does indeed increase, as they probably is not pushing CPU limits, where GLB does...

honestly, i dont know.. i was actually trying to fix the resolution to 840x480 which i accomplished so i could compare performance with a 7" elocity. and get same score, but i then experimented with some other values and rebooted a few times watching the bootup and i noticed the init of the framebuffer device changed,
NvGrFbDevOpen: Opened fb0 on disp 0 size 1024x600 format 1 rate 78.000000
and i tested it with fps2d and got info confirmed...
so actually it was pure luck
not sure of the effects yet. maybe a battery drainer ? but the hack its only a few days old, and kernel dist does not include nvrm_daemon, so im not sure where to find exact documentation on it yet.
The greatest advances seem to be pure blind luck of unintended consequences. Nice catch on your part.
Thanks Dexter. Question. Can I also use this on my Elocity that at the moment is running your 1.0c.

no, this driver has 1024x600 native resolution which your device will not handle.
But i can take a look at it tomorrow to see if its the same with ElocityA7 .
There is alot of tweaks to offer for ElocityA7, but sadly i still havent got one :-( , to verify it.

. Works great on g tab. 78fps on fps2d and 54.1 fps on neocore. I'm sure quadrant will jump to. Thanks!
Update: Quadrant stayed the same which is odd as I could see that fps was much higher in 3d tests, like hitting 80 fps. Sweet!

your 3D score might jump, but if the rest drops just a little , you don't notice it much, it weighs not much in the complete test. I/O really makes a difference when tweaked..
But i got just another 200+ here, running it a few times, so its not a major but it did show improvement on 3D.. (a little strange as the fps2D also shows 2D increase?) but thats probably why perf. tests are not always reliable..
i tried some flashplayer tests on top of this, and those also increased
Hello everyone
Because i have found some phones used s820 (ZF3D/Pixel/mate 9 pro) playing game(whitecat project) without lag
some of the phones can set certain app to low resoltuion like htc 10 & mate 9 pro and it improves the performance.
so i want to ask is there any chance for v20 to reduce resolution from 2k to 1080p or 720p
thx
Have you tried the Game Batter Saver? One of the options within that Reduces the resolution for either all games or you can customize which game(s) get this battery saving feature.
Go to Settings>Battery and Power Saving>Game Battery Saver (Hit the 3 Dots . . . right next to the toggle to get all the options)
Otherwise I believe you can ADB push some commands to reduce the Density...I do not know the command though from memory.
As stated above, enable Game Battery Saver will let you play games in 1080P or 720P ( not sure which )
If you wanna change the whole phone to 1080P, you'll need SU access, and as a matter of fact I don't suggest you do that at all, LG stock ROM crashes when running 1080P.
Anyway, here's the command, run it in a terminal
su
wm size 1080x1920
wm density 480

Glad it worked out for ya!
I'm messing around with the wm size and wm density commands because when I dock my v20 on a huge monitor the space is useless if I don't at least change the dpi. I came upon this thread because I was looking for a list of v20 resolutions that include the second screen, since if you do not include it in the resolution you get useless black boxes at the sides of your screen, since you need to account for extra space of the second screen. I realize the person who originally asked the question doesn't care about changing the resolution anymore, but for anyone else who does I wanted to explain this and say to try 1080x 2080 if you're looking for 1080x1920, due to the extra screen area. This accounts for 160 extra pixels and it all fits perfectly on my monitor. I actually can't wait to get to work to try this on one of our picky office monitors that will always reject my HDMI out because of it's odd resolution.
So in summary, V20 main screen resolution = Hx(W+160) = wm size 1080x2080 or adb shell wm size 1080x2080 if you're remote controlling the phone via adb rather than typing the command directly on the phone, which I like to do.

If you want pubg to perform well, than you need to exclude the application from battery save list.
In Setting - General - Gaming, you can have some options there.

why would we need to exclude. from what i read battery saver give us choice to reduce the resolution, that should boost the performance right?
If you want to change the resolution to FHD you can try at 1080x2080 so there is no blank screen at the bottom then change DPI.
But the secondary screen will be funny.
That's odd that PUBG is lagging for you, I can try to download it and test on my v20....me and a friend played together fine before both using cheap budget honor 6x phones with way less strong specs than the v20 has, you'd figure the flagship specced v20 could pretty much play any game flawless

Yes. A flagship like v20 should perform well. Unfortunately it doesn't on pubg. Even at the lowest setting it lags.

From what I understood from the posts on this thread and what is mentioned in settings, By adding PUBG to the list it will run at a lower resolution(and lower FPS if you want). It won't throttle performance of the game. So game should be able to run smoother if resolution of the display is decreased for a particular game.
As for decreasing the resolution, I found this setting available on lg V30 plus on Oreo. You could change resolution in the stock rom easily. Let's hope we get it in some future update.

Lol that's sad. I was also waiting for Oreo update, hoping for the same. Maybe it will get fixed with some future PUBG update. No matter how much thermal throttling happens. LG v20 should be able to pubg without lag at least on the lowest settings, if it can run Ashphalt 9 without lag
I remember reading thermal throttling is an issue with the v20, supposedly only switching to a custom kernal will help. I've never personally done the whole custom rom thing so I couldn't help on that lol.
I'm honestly biding time until next month when oreo will supposedly come to the att/verizon version v20's...it's already out on the sprint variant iirc, some claim it made the v20 into a whole new phone and very smooth, others reported problems. I have noticed some major lag and hitching when waking the phone up from sleep or taking it off the charger first thing in the morning when I go to check notifications. I have a bit of soul searching to do on what my next phone shall be, people always swore the Pixels were good, I just don't know if the cheaper 32gb model would be enough for me...I suppose pics would be a non issue storage wise thx to google photos so maybe the 32gb and no sd card slot is possible to work out in the end.
I just know basically with the specs the v20 has being a slightly older flagship not even 2 years old yet, that it should perform better than it does, battery life has always been a bit blah too. I was busy yesterday so I didn't get a chance to DL PUBG but I'll do it now to test it. I've noticed little hitches and glitches/lag in daily uses here and there even with the animations and stuff set to 0.5x in the dev options. After a little reading online, many claimed doze is the source of lag on the v20, they claimed they got no better battery life using doze vs an old galaxy note 4 that didn't even have doze on its older OS.
is there a stable custom rom/kernal combo that's similar to vanilla android that would be easy to flash for a first time beginner? I'm willing to try that...I know you have to root the phone, unlock the bootloader, get the custom recovery, then DL and install the rom, I think that's it right...? I've watched a youtube vid before but I've never even had a flagship android previously, only budget/mid range phones, so...I never had one that could even be rooted/bootloader unlocked....
I heard all those 1 click cloud chinese based root apps will instantly compromise all the info on the phone so I'd never wanna use those
If you guys are having performance issues have you tried changing the thermal paste inside the phone? I changed mine out and the stock stuff was horrible. It was basically a dry crusted block. It's made a noticeable difference playing games. I haven't tried PUBG yet but I play Honkai impact 3rd and it runs flawlessly at low and mid resolution. If I out it on high it runs decent enough but it stutters more often especially with lot of action going on.
Also I'm running MK2000 BTTF custom kernel and it's made a big difference compared to stock kernel game wise.
Has anyone figured out why the LG game battery saver thing doesn't detect all games yet? It's very random. I've had plenty of games installed and it only detects my PPSSPP emulator app as a game lol nothing else. Ive tried clearing data on the battery saver apk and reinstalling stuff and it's very random. Think the last time I remember it detecting every single game I had properly was back on 10J arb0 firmware for my H918. Now I'm on 10u arb1 so I can't go back.
{{{EDIT}}}} for PUBG there is also this GFX app tool that let's you tweak PUBG setting a little more not sure if anyone has seen it: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=eu.tsoml.graphicssettings
@aakashverma0007
Just downloaded the game to try it out and the game ran fine on mine at these settings. It actually recommended medium but i bumped it up to high to see. It was perfectly playable. Played one game took like 10-15 minutes or so and then frame rate stayed a pretty stable 45-60. It only dipped below 30 in the pre game area when everyone was loading in to the game. In fact this runs better than my Xbox one does lol. The game saver thing was turned to base optimization as I couldn't get the custom setting to read any of my games.
By the way, it might have been just matchmaking issues idk but this game is ridiculously easy on mobile lol. I literally killed 15 people and won just sniping with the Tommy gun. I only played a few games but it seems people have an issue moving while aiming on mobile and I have never won a game on the Xbox lol
I see that samsungs and v30 got the option to change screen resolution to save battery. Is that option in the G6? (I currently got an LG G2 and want to upgrade)
No all we got is the option to change the acpect ratios for the apps

That's exactly why Im asking. Its a shame if you cant tune down the resolution and loose performance. Perhaps a custom rom may steal that function from the v30 now that is released.
My LG G2 never get hot. I wonder why new cellphones got this problem.
Yeh my phone geta hot after 15 min and loose fps....almost to unplayable state.... I need underclock cpu or lower resolution.... To keep it little more cool

As i am sure we cant notice 2k and 1080p drop on such a small screen....but cpu should stay cooler... Test it as well and let me know how you get on...please
Note i launch the game from the menu itself...by choosing option play....

I think that only works with 3d applications but not affect daily use in wich the cpu/gpu need to move full screen resolution.
shagratt said:
That's exactly why Im asking. Its a shame if you cant tune down the resolution and loose performance. Perhaps a custom rom may steal that function from the v30 now that is released.
My LG G2 never get hot. I wonder why new cellphones got this problem.

I still dont own the phone so cant test it but see a few videos/reviews about it and it render games at lower resolution. But only that, games, so all other drawing functions from normal aplications are not afected. It works as intended and indeed it help a lot in fast demanding games (like racing, shooters ,etc)
Yes like you said...did today hevay gaming over 1 hour.... No heat like before....warm yes...but no even close to it.... The resolution is noticeably lower..but i went to max fps and min res....
Defo a good feature...better then lower all res....
Cheers
I havent had any heating issues with g6. But resolution change would a thing nice to see with oreo update.

I see that samsungs and v30 got the option to change screen resolution to save battery. Is that option in the G6? (I currently got an LG G2 and want to upgrade)

I bet we gonna get this in oreo update
https://goo.gl/UKaif3 This will help for the resolution but you have to be rooted
Oreo should bring resolution change option.
Non-rooted option: search Google for adb shell wm size and adb shell wm density commands. I haven't tried the size command but density gave me little bit nicer look and feel.
Bit of an old thread, but right now I'm running this res for better game performance:
adb shell
wm size 1080x2160
wm density 480
Notice that this causes the viewfinder in the stock camera app to be zoomed in and you won't be able to see the full image being captured. But I use the ported Google Camera which doesn't suffer from the problem.

here it is step by step with example for our loved G6... I didn't try it tho, and if you do, do it at your own risk!
can't wait to see if any of you isn't such coward, tries it, and tell us that it makes wonders for battery and heating....
edit: found the post here on XDA with the step-by-step guide!! give it a try someone!
Import this little profile here to tasker
PLEASE TRY IT WITH QHD
Follow the steps within profile
Beta 2 will theorically will let you run strictly on 60hz and will run you back to 120 whenever you open an app that you desire to be refreshing at 120
Needed
Tasker
Patient
Knowledge on how to run adb commands until there's root.
If it isn't being force on let's say Gmaps but it is set to 120hz most likely it will drop down to 60 to save battery. And this can happen with other apps as well.
Please enjoy and report back.
Update Beta V2

gmaps is garbage, especially the navigation it doesnt even run at 20fps, i am still using old maps pre big update where the navigation was separate

Does it even run smoothly on pixels? It never ran smoothly on any of my phones, especially when zooming out during navigation, pathetic.
Has anyone successfully used this yet? I'm more interested in tying it to the power mode like high performance or optimized. Is that possible?

Yes it runs smoothly on pixel 4
I'm using this and working very well. Running all apps besides video playback apps and gmaps at 120hz.
Takes a second or 2 for refresh rate to change but I think this is a great idea in general, app controllable refresh rate

Damn this is what I wanted... I've never had tasker and don't know how to use it and don't want to buy it just to test something to find out it doesn't work at the end. Can you please test if the video app kodi can be run at 120hz please?

It should
Download the profile and import to tasker
Pick which apps you want to run in each and you're good to go.
That being said I installed kodi and it seems like 120hz.
Easy to tell 120 from 60.
I don't think worth running video playback apps in 120 as video won't run in 120 anyway.
I don't understand how to import this into Tasker. When I click on the link from my phone, it doesn't give me the option to open it with Tasker. Is there any way you can post the actual file here?

When you click link in thread, click import and then click yes, this should open in tasker. Then you click on choose apps and pick which apps to run in 120 and rest go to 60.
You have installed tasker right?
I don't think this is working at all for me. There's a noticeable difference when I enable/disable the setting manually regardless of whether the Tasker profile is applying (which it says it is).

Someone said it does and they're wrong. It seems to run at about 15-30fps, just verified on my Pixel 4XL.
Places where this is evident are any in-app animations, for example if you tap on your blue location dot, it will animate to fill the screen with blue. Or if you search a location and tap its card, it will animate to pull the card up. Or you can just fling the map around. There's no way anybody with decent vision can confuse this with 60fps let along 120fps.

Hi Kev,
first of all thank you for the thread's and tasker profile regarding the 120Hz tingz!
The 120Hz experience on the S20 line imho is ULTRA disappointing!
Not the Display itself but more the way stupid Sammy implemented it Software wise.
First disappointment, the limitation of only FHD+
but this was known even before the S20 line was officially announced so I actively decided to look pass that. Even though most people say FHD+ is enough and you don't see any pixels or whatever, I have to say coming from a S10 with a smaller display and and higher dpi, I do notice how much softer the image quality on the S20+ is! It's noticeably less sharp.
The Second disappointment no one warned me about is the fact that half of the apps revert back to 60Hz!!!
No one told me this! and I ****ing hate this. Maybe I was naive, maybe it's the fact that I had no experience with a phone that has a high refresh rate display, but to my understanding if I set my phones display to 120Hz, everything, the UI and all apps would be displayed @*120Hz! But no! this already is like on the leaked Firmware Screenshot wich shows the "Dynamic" option in the middle! it's not locked.
Just shows again how important root is. The ability to take control of the device you own and not giving control to stupid Sammy dev's...
Your method with tasker works fine, but I had no experience with tasker prior and I only using it during it's trial period. After the trial ends, I'm not going to buy the full version.
Is there maybe a adb command that can globally set the phone to a fixed 120Hz refresh rate? Since I don't need a per app selection.
again thank you for this tasker profile so far.
Thanks for the profile! But there is one issue: it's works only once for my S20, then after launching few apps refresh rate drops to 60Hz ((( Even rebooting my phone doesn't help (
Saw this on Twitter:
Use adb commands
Code:
adb shell settings put system peak_refresh_rate 96.0
adb shell settings put system min_refresh_rate 96.0
Seems only support 1080p
But should be easier on battery
To revert back, just click on 60hz or 120hz in settings.
Do this on you own risk. I am NOT responsible for any damage this causes.
Edit: it seems that you have to manually revert by setting 120 and 60 through adb..
Clicking on 120hz didn't revert it back for me, I think you have to go to 120hz and type both commands by replacing 96 to 120 to revert it back.
That being said awesome tip, thank you, I will definitely use only that now.
Samsung should let a 90hz option

Yo guys! I have a S20+ here, Exynos version and found some interesting things, since the Exynos version has bad performance compared to the Snapdragon one, look what I found:

Understatement really...Samsung should allow 24Hz/30Hz/48Hz/60Hz/72Hz/90HZ/96Hz/120Hz refresh rates. They should also allow for 3000 x 1350p @ 96Hz because it should in fact work as the highest resolution relative to the refresh rate of 96Hz for the display at least based on 2400 x 1080p @ 120Hz far as I can tell by the math.
Edit: Wrong thread, sorry.
so in attempting to do this, i am noticing that although i set min to 120, it is still reporting 60hz via dev refresh-rate overlay, anyone got any ideas?

No. It seems to either be a limitation of the display itself or is defined in the build.prop, either way, I can only force the screen up to 60 Max on my Tab A4 S with a TFT LCD display.
