VNS-L31 softbricked and bootlooping... HELP PLS! - Huawei P9 Lite Questions & Answers

I was trying to restore to stock firmware my vns-l31...
After many hours and many attempts i was able to update to an older rom, but it was giving me a lot of errrors (like the fingerprint magically disappeared after a while and so on...).
And everytime i witched it on it gave me the error "your device has failed verification and may not work properly" in red.
So I've decided to try again.
But now I am once again stuck.
Phone keeps bootloping.
It can go into fastboot, i have every driver possible installed, and I've tried a bunch of stock roms, each one giving me different errors.
Phone is unlocked (Bootloader unlocked, FRP unlock), but i really don't know what to do now.
Any help would be much appreciated.
P.s.
The last rom i had working was a VNS-L31C40B368
I tried to upgrade to a C432B414 and downgrade to a C432B130, neither working.
I had previously installed EliteROM 7.7 and EliteKernel by HassanMirza.
When the phone was working it didn't show the proper version installed but it said Elite ROM v7.7.
While using P9 lite Toolkit today, i saw that custom.bin and oeminfo were non existent.
I tried flashing this rom C432B414 but it has no CUST.img
The c432B130 has the cust.img but i wont flash.
pls send help
Also I am from Italy, if that's of any help.
dload method won't work with the updates i've donwloaded
Phone won't boot in recovery, only eRecovery. I've tried installing twrp, but only elite twrp worked and it was password locked...

If you could share a known good working twrp it would be much appreciated.
Thing is I have trouble booting into recovery, it just won't.
I got the phone one time into recovery with EliteTWRP but it was password protected to decrypt data
EDIT: i can now access TWRP (the Elite one)

OK siamo a cavallo !!
Leggi bene prima di fare...
..oops devo scrivere in inglese ...
Let's start with your latest working OS (VNS-L31C40B368 (as i see into a CUST lists, it's a kind of czeck republic/weird vodafone firmware version)).
Are you ready ?
From your PC download those three files..
1 - update.zip
2 - update_data_full_public.zip
3 - update_full_VNS-L11_tef_normal.zip
Rename file 2 from update_data_full_public TO update_data_public.
Rename file 3 from update_full_VNS-L11_tef_normal TO update_all_hw.
Let file 1 the same name...
Download THIS SCRIPT (HuRUpdater0.4zip file).
Create a folder and rename it VNSL31C40B368.
Copy all 4 file you downloaded into the folder you created (VNSL31C40B386)
If you want keep TWRP (now recommended), copy the .img file of the recovery into that folder, otherwise proceed with instruction...
Copy your VNSL31C40B368 folder into the SD card of the phone..
You should have something like THIS.
Reboot into recovery and format DATA.
Reboot again recovery and wipe everything except SD.
Go in main menu of twrp, hit install, find out your folder (VNSL31C40B368), choose HuRUpdater0.4.zip file and let it flash.
You may have to follow some instructions on screen if needed, flashing could take many minutes, keep calm...
When rebooting, device could go in a bootloop !!!
If after 20 minutes it hadn't booted, press vol+ and power till it reboot into recovery.
Make a factory reset and everything should be good. Good luck... :fingers-crossed:
I would recommend to read at least a couple of times before do... take your time...
P.S.: All this may not work because as you wrote oeminfo file are missed.
We will look then for another way, maybe making a rebrand into european nobrand firmware....

Anyway the procedure you gave me didn't work.
It said it couldn't mount /data, but also
it gave the errors:
Failed to mount /cust
Failed to mount /product
Failed to mount /system
Failed to mount /vendor
Failed to mount /version
And it's continuing bootlooping.

Boot into TWRP,
wipe > advanced wipe > tick only DATA then hit on > repair or change the file system...
File system should be EXT4.
If somehow it is F2FS hit > change file system > and choose EXT4.
If anyway it is EXT4 apply same way to EXT4...
You should be sure DATA partition is EXT4...
Go in main menu and format again DATA partition...
Now you should be ready to flash...
Tell me when you done this.
In order to make things more easy you can PM me in your language...
I will reply as soon as i can...

Update
Data partition was in ext4, i tried setting it to ext4 and it gave a bunch of errors.
I rebooted and it showed that the data partition was now in f2fs. So i set it to ext4 and formatted data.
After rebooting i tried flashing the OS using your guide and it all went smootly with no errors.
But now the phone keeps bootlooping even after factory reset.

Ok dude i found the european L31C432OEMinfo single sim file and
L31C432B417 firmware (three files), it's latest security January 2020 patch...
Links for download are those...
1 - OEMinfo file ;
2 - update.zip ;
3 - update_data_full_public.zip ;
4 - update_full_VNS-L11_hw_eu.zip ;
Let file 2 the same name, rename file 3 from update_data_full_public TO update_data_public,
rename file 4 from update_full_VNS-L11_hw_eu TO update_all_hw.
Names must mandatory match the ones I wrote to you, otherwise it won't work.
You already downloaded HuRUpdater04.zip file... if not tap HERE
This is the procedure:
Make a folder and rename L31C432B417.
Copy into that folder files 2-3-4 (renamed) and HuRUpdater04.zip file.
(if you want you can keep the TWRP copying the .img file into that folder....)
Copy the folder into the SD.
Copy the OEMinfo file wherever you want into the SD.
Put the SD into the device...
Reboot into recovery and format DATA.
Reboot again recovery and wipe everything except SD.
Go in main menu, tap install, find and select OEMinfo file, let it flash...
When finished go in main menu and select REBOOT then Bootloader.
Connect the phone to your PC and unlock again the bootloader. (disconnect from PC)
Device should automatically reboot into the recovery otherwise you can do
holding vol + and power button.
Now tap install, find your L31C432B417 folder, select HuRUpdater04.zip file
and let it flash...
Dude you should be ok, take your time... your device should reboot into the system correctly,
if not reboot into the recovery and do a factory reset + wipe cache.
Let me know :fingers-crossed:

Something is wrong...

Hi guys i have a problem with my P9 Lite so i'll cut to the chase:
I installed Resurrection Remix and everything was fine. I decided to restore the dump and TWRP backup that i made of stock before hand because meh i could.
Now when i open TWRP and press the Backup button the /data partion doesn't show up. I press the "3 horizontal line" button and right on the top it says: "Failed to mount '/data' (Mounted without encryption...)"
I tried restoring the dump and TWRP backup again and it did not get fixed. I Factory reset the phone and it does not fix it. I format data and it does not fix it. I tried different formats like FAT, EXT4 and exFAT but it still does not get fixed. I tried factory reset from within the phone's settings menu and still does not get fixed.
Nothing is wrong with the phone, it's not bricked, but i cant install any ROM (like Meticulus' CM 13 for example) anymore as i get "ERROR 7" and neither can i mount or make TWRP backup of /data.
I must've screwed up along the way of installing Resurrection Remix and now i don't really know what to do about it. Pls help :crying:

You just screw up your phone...
Backup from twrp works, but at restore appears problems because of encryption of data partition...
Reparation works in that way: have prepared in dload folder a B130 stock firmware, flash oeminfo, phone get corrupted
and need a low level reset (with the help of emui and dload folder). After that your phone should be clean and via 3 key combination start fresh setup.

Localisation---> not sure what this is
Firmware---> i have VNS-L31C02B123
Bootloader---> unlocked
Twrp---> works fine except for that "unable to mount data" error from above
Root---> Root enable, SuperSu works

Yes, step 4 could be done in twrp if you have oeminfo flashable zip. I do it with a tool from arround here (in fact i do with that tool all: unlock, twrp, root, debrand etc).
Step 5 is ok to do it like you said.

Soft Bricked Oneplus 5 - Virturally Zero storage, accidentally deleted I think.

Guys i got my oneplus 5 in the mail yesterday and I like it, but I think i ****ed up...big time. please somebody help me out.
i was following this guide: https://forum.xda-developers.com/oneplus-5/how-to/oneplus-5-unlock-bootloader-flash-twrp-t3624877
to root my oneplus 5 so i can use Adaway. Ive rooted and installed a custom rom many times on my oneplus one before so I didn't really have any issues.
but then when I got to "Gaining root access" part, I was a little confused because I wasn't sure what step to take, so i Just did the stuff from the top. I think somewhere along the way I ****ed up and for some reason all my folders are gone except for android. (ie downloads, notifications, alarms, ringtones, music, pictures, etc folders are gone)
even when i take a picture, it just disappears because it has nowhere to save to... . when I plug it in with file transfer mode, there is literally only 1 folder, look at this picture: http://imgur.com/a/F49v0
is there anything I can do to fix this? or did i just GG no re 540$? I know i'm a ****ing stupid ass ****ing low life piece of **** dumbass **** head.
If worse comes to worse, I still got like 13 days left to return it if possible? Do u think they'll accept a return or replacement from me?
****
when I go to google and try to download an image, it says It can't be downloaded because of missing SD card. wtf is going on?!
EDIT UPDATE: okay now my phone is stuck on boot screen with the 1+ symbol. any1 know how to help me out?

Try to reboot into TWRP and format everything, including internal storage. Then flash any ROM and reboot.
If this doesn't work, you'll have to start all over again. Do a complete revert to stock.
Download the stock OP5 OOS 4.5.4 zip.
Download OnePlus stock recovery.
Reboot into fastboot/bootloader mode.
Flash stock recovery.
Boot into stock recovery.
Do a full wipe of /system and /data and /data/media (internal storage).
Sideload the full zip you downloaded in step 1 and flash it via stock recovery.
Reboot your phone.

Followed the steps. Everything works fine until sideload. I constantly get error in CMD prompt: cannot read...
I tried removing the zip file extension, dragging the file into command prompt. What am I doing wrong?
I have the same problem as OP where I foolishly deleted storage and now all I have is the android folder on the phone and cannot save files, nor download certain apps from the play store.
Thank you in advance...

Can you try formating first using the flash tool? If you accedentally deleted all folders even those in the root branch of the phone, It will generate the necessary files on your phone i think. Then you can simply flash twrp using the tool and should see the folders in twrp. Otherwise you can flash the full ota to generate them

Theoretically you should also be able to issue the following command in Recovery:
Code:
adb push -p [COLOR="Red"]<full zip path>[/COLOR] /sdcard/
Then select the zip from there. If you still get the read error, can you try rebooting into normal mode and issuing the same command?
Thank you for your help. huaiyue's storage fix zip file actually did the trick. I was able to restore everything back to normal. So thank you and thanks to huaiyue.
If anyone ever faces this again, Just follow below mentioned steps..
1: Flash TWRP
2: Got to Wipe and FORMAT data this will Decrypt you... AND let's you access your internal storage again..!
3: Now copy stock rom and FLASH.. This makes you ENCRYPTED again.
4: Now everything should be back to normal, just flash twrp again and enjoy..
Go to TWRP ----> select DATA (check it) ---> DONT swipe to wipe but click on REPAIR OR CHANGE FILE SYSTEM and select EXT 4. After that, reboot to twrp and data is recognized as normal sdcard..
That SD card fix helped but I want to know, what caused this?

Create Stock Recovery.img from FTF File

Hi, I am in the process of preparing for upgrading from 7.0 to 7.1.1
I know I need to replace the Custom Kernel with the Stock Kernel. And I have to replace TWRP with Stock Recovery.
Can anybody tell me, which file inside the FTF is the stock recovery? I already found the kernel. Need help to find the stock recovery, thank you!

We don't have one which is why we have to use TWRP.
So my only way is to flash via Flashtool without wipe?

Do that then mod your own kernel. [How To] make your own XPERIA DRM-fix kernel.
And flash a TWRP.img to the recovery partition.
fotakernel.sin reside's where we flash twrp on stock. you do not need to flash it to upgrade, contrary you can exclude it in flashtool and keep twrp between updates.

this is real knowledge, thanks! so just to be sure, this is what i will do in flashtool:
1) wipe: nothing selected
2) exclude: fotakernel.sin selected
can anybody confirm this is correct?
then after this, i will flash a custom kernel via fastboot and magisk via twrp.
one question regarding magisk: will it be deleted during the flashtool update?
So I ran into a problem...
The Upgrade to 7.1.1 via flashtool was smooth. Then, i flashed twrp via fastboot as usual. When I tried to enter twrp, i get a password prompt to decrypt the phone. So i don't know which password i need to type in. I tried the unlock PIN, doesnt work. Any suggestions?

To get round that you need to run the following commands...
Code:
fastboot format userdata
fastboot format cache
...so you'll need to backup all your data first.

Ok, so I decided to keep my data and don't install twrp. Now I got another issue, is it possible to install Magisk without TWRP? I already got my kernel using my ta backup according to the instructions a few posts above, which really works great.

I thought you excluded fotakernel so you did not have to flash twrp again. Oh well anyway you can use twrp to flash zips just fine although /data is encrypted, most flash zips do not write to /data anyway some like supersu use /cache (which is not encrypted contrary to the info above) to get around encryption at next boot. And like magisk also patch the boot.img live on your phone, some write to /system which is not encrypted either, I never seen a flash zip that did write to /data. Only backup/browsing/etc on /data is affected.
So when presented with the password screen in twrp just press cancel and make sure the zip you want to flash is located on the external sd card (do not encrypt this in phone settings, your card will be unreadable from pcs to) then choose flash zip and choose the external sdcard to pick the zip from and flash magisk or whatever. You need to run your kernel through ta poc or rootkernel first and disable dm verity and sony ric. (you write you did this so just install twrp and flash away) Do not wipe cache before rebooting just in case magisk uses this in a similar way to supersu (I have no idea)
Also if you do the above fastboot format commands suggested in post#8 without disabling 'forceencrypt' for /data (fstab in the kernel image or with a tool) the phone will encrypt itself again as soon as you turn it on.
If forceencrypt is disabled the same can be achieved (clearing encryption) with a factory reset btw.
So if you did not bump into the password in twrp before you likely did a factory reset with a kernel with encryption disabled. Then, maybe after updating you rebooted stock and the phone encrypted itself again, then now you can not access /data in twrp. Thats also because we have no version of it that supports encryption on the X-compact though. Again do not worry, I have not meet a zip I could not flash, supersu, magisk, etc because they do not access /data anyway.

Yes, after the first upgrade attempt, i let twrp untouched. then when entering twrp, i didnt have a password, so i skipped it. i couldn't find the sd card in the file browser, and after i hit reboot in twrp the phone restarted and got stuck in boot.
So I flashed again, this time deleting twrp. the initial boot up went fine. Then i flashed twrp again and once again, without having a password, i just skipped the password prompt. still couldnt find the sd card, and i rebooted out of twrp. and the phone got stuck again.
after 2-3 trials, i figured out that everytime i rebooted out of twrp, the phone gets stuck during boot. even after turning it off and on, so a reflash was needed.
now i have given up using twrp, so i have an unrooted phone with an unlocked bootloader. which does not allow me to use android pay. i think to solve my problem is:
1) i need to know which twrp version really works, i have tried
this version
and this version
both cause a boot failure for me
2) i need to find the sd card location in the twrp file browser (all the folders show empty for me)
if nothing works, i guess i need to wipe my phone, but that's what i would like to avoid. thanks for your help guys!

The 2. issue with the sdcard is easy. After pressing 'install' button in twrp at the bottom left press the "select storage' button, a small window will pop up then select the 'micro sdcard' and press 'ok", you should see your files now.
The 1. ssue is really odd! I use the second twrp you posted, for some wierd reason the first one does not boot for me (twrp does not start). But I talked with another guy for him it was the other way around. It was really strange. I think most can use both though without problems
There is one more twrp 3.1 from bambamx, but I really do not get this, twrp boots from its own partition with its own kernel. They should be separated unless twrp does something to system ofcause which it very well shouldn't unless you ask it to, deleting a important file or flashing something. I have never heard of this sorry. One thing is certain our device sure could use a stable nougat encryption compatible twrp!
I will let you know if I find something, you can try the last available version, I have no idea if it will exhibit the same strange behaviour. But maybe its worth a shot although it seems something else is at play.
A couple of stupid questions sorry; You disabled dm verity and sony ric in ta poc right, and it does not happen if you boot your phone normal a couple of times.
Edit: sorry Mr. Sandman had not left so I did not read properly here from the morning. I will edit my post to actually answer as best as I can lol.
Just to let you know:
1. You do not need to install TWRP to use it! You can just do
Code:
fastboot boot <TWRP image>
to run TWRP on the phone (instead of
Code:
fastboot flash boot <TWRP image>
). The only drawback of this method is that you will always need a computer to enter TWRP. Btw. with this method you can also try out a custom kernel image before flashing it.
2. You do not need write access to /data partition to install Magisk. It was explained in another thread that Magisk can use /cache temporary when access to /data is not available. It will write to /data on first boot instead.
3. While using TWRP you can use adb to transfer files onto the phone, so you don't need to have them ready on the internal storage.

I did, but the SD card can't be selected, and the size shows as 0kb. I did a workaround though: i formatted a spare sd card and copied magisk on it. it was instantly recognized and selectable.

Stuck in recovery with no image to flash

First of all, I read this thread, but no luck.
Situation:
* I unlocked bootloader, installed TWRP 3.1.1-1 and flashed Freedom OS, succeding.
* Then I decided to try the Oreo open beta, but had a problem (error 7 flashing it), so I wanted to get back to Freedom OS
* After flashing Freedom OS again (with success) I rebooted but I was stuck at boot logo.
* I decided to flash again OOS 4.5.14, but I misclicked something and I found my self in TWRP with no ROM to flash on SDcard (I think I have checked also internal storage while wiping).
* PANIC!
So, 3 questions:
1) given that I want to stay encrypted (if still possible at this point) should I decrypt data or not at TWRP boot?
2) if I chose decrypt with the unlock code (read that I did) I have to go with decrypt or formatting is enough to keep crypt?
3) MORE IMPORTANT: how do I get a ROM to flash into the phone. Reeboting in TWRP sometimes I see the internal storage, but when I drop a firmware in it I get the transfer windows stuck at 0% and it disappear after a few seconds.
Thanks in advance to who will help me!

Thanks for the suggestion and... it's a beginning.
The problem is that if I sideload a small file like Magisk upload is ok, even if (obviously) it can't install.
When it comes to Oxygen OS I get I cannot read file error.
I doubleclicked the file and it opens in PC, so it isn't corrupted.
I'd be tempted to try another USB cable and maybe another computer if you have one. Failing that, if it's a problem with TWRP your last resort may be a complete low level flash. A good guide is here - https://forum.xda-developers.com/oneplus-5/how-to/unbrick-tool-oneplus-5-t3648169
Edit: I should say be careful if you do have connectivity problems, as flashing using unbrick tools while your connection is bad would not be a good idea at all since it could make things even worse (maybe even hard brick)
I finally got it working. I am a bit ashamed of what the problem was, but I share in case someone else does this stupid error.
The point is: I was formatting /data inside Advanced wipe instead of using "Format Data", so ( I think) I was not rebuilding the sd card allocation table.
After formatting with "Format data" I was able to put the firmware with drag and drop from the PC and I could finally have mu OP5 working again.
Can't you press reboot to recovery and decrypt with your code so your device gets mounted on a PC? Otherwise you can adb sideload the oxygenos file. I had the same error, but Google gave me this:
https://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=69648733&postcount=47
Use the program on all the files in the adb directory and reboot.

Format data is necessary on the OP5 when moving between Nougat and Oreo. I hope you flashed the Oreo Open Beta rather than Freedom. It's far superior.

There are two with download links included in the instructions thread for flashing Oreo. I recommend the Blu Spark TWRP over the Chinese TWRP. It will be updated more often.

In that case the plan would be to simply download the B895 or B896 update. If your device is single SIM, something I think it is, download B895, if not, B896. I cant put links because I'm a new user, but you can search for the files in androidfilehost.com
Then, extract the update.zip, and if you have stock recovery, put the extracted UPDATE.APP in a folder called "dload" in your internal memory/SD card, and reboot reboot your phone by pressing the Vol+/- and Power buttons(It should begin the installation). If you have TWRP installed, you can just flash it normally.
I think that is all! I've heard that doing this can encrypt your memory, but that can easily be solved with TWRP by wiping the data partition, next to the Factory Reset button. If you have any questions, fell free to ask.

Yeah it started encrytpting but because I am a epic (not really) I restarted the phone that moment and messed up some things, so it wanned me to do a factory reset from the stock recovery an I accepted, next I booted into the system with all the preinstalled apps in /data missing, so that meant no file manager but I had google play so I installed es file manager, and no systen files were currupted (I forgot to mention upper while flashing the update I got some unknown command error) so after that I needed to flash twrp because its replaced by stock, I did this and what I saw, it cant mount /data, the fix for this is to make the /data partition FAT and after that EX4, and I rebooted but it cannot read it?! So the system did a factory reset and made twrp again cant mount partition, so there was no other way than flashing a custom rom so I did this with /data (make it fat and es4 again) and did a full wipe, after that installed lineageOS 14 for my phone and here ends the story. Thank you for all the help
