So before installing the ROM, I guess you first root the device and then installed TWRP? Some good instructions to do that?
I've come across 3 versions of TWRP that all seem plausible but that I do not necessirily trust/understand:
a) espresso-common-TWRP
b) P5110-TWRP
c) twrp-3.1.1-0-p5110.img
What I don't understand is that if the TeamWin is not supporting TWRP on this device anymore and stopped at version 3.1.1, how is it that these ANDROID-ANDY has more recent versions? And what is the espresso-common version? How does it differ from the P5110-TWRP version?

TWRP source is open, if you have the ability you can compile newer versions.

espresso-common is unified, it works on P3100, P3110, P3113, P5100, P5110 and P5113 without the need for a device specific TWRP. It makes maintaining TWRP easier for our Tab.
At boot the kernel of the recovery is reading a value from your your LCD to decide which drivers need to be loaded on your variant.

[Q] Best procedure for flashing Optimized CM12.1 on to the UK GT-I9505 (JFLTEXX)?

I successfully flashed CM11 on to my LG G Pad 8.3 without issue so I've done this before (but most of the downloads had Batch files to automate things) but want to still be sure of the procedure.
My I9505 was recently upgraded OTA to Android 5.0.1 along with Samsung's TouchWiz. Hopefully this won't complicate matters.
Is this the best/recommended procedure? -
Root: What's the best/recommended method to Root my S4?
Backup Stock Recovery: Using Flashify on Google Play.
Install Recovery: Is TWRP Recovery v2.8.7.0 the best Recovery to use?
The Optimized CM12.1 thread recommends TWRP 2.8.7.0 but the download doesn't contain a batch file to run?
Reboot to TWRP --> Backup my existing ROM image then choose the Wipe option
Install the Optimized CM12.1 ROM then GAPPS from SD Card
Related questions about the Optimized CM12.1 ROM and GAPPS please:
Wouldn't a regular CM12.1 Nightly for the I9505 be better than the Optimized CM12.1 ROM? The Optimized CM12.1 ROM looks to be older (2015-06-16), or am I splitting hairs over a few days? Thanks
The Optimized CM12.1 thread offers a link to download GAPPS for Lolilpop 5.1. Is this better to use than the one in the GAPPS for Lollipop 5.1 here (ARM download): http://wiki.cyanogenmod.org/w/Google_Apps
Thanks a lot in advance for your help.
Is the TWRP Manager on Google Play the best/recommended way to install TWRP 2.8.7.0? -

Thanks again.
Regarding your steps...
1, 2: Cyanogenmod is pre-rooted, and the stock recovery images are readily available, thus these steps waste time.
3. Yes.
4. Yes. You'll use Odin to flash the recovery, thus no batch file.
5, 6: Yes.
As to your other questions...
1. You need to decide which you want more. Is having a more current build more important than the optimizations? Regardless of the final choice both install in essentially the same fashion.
2. The GApps in the thread is more up-to-date than the official download.
Finally, TWRP Manager stopped working properly some time ago and really isn't necessary. Download the image from the Optimized CM12.1 thread and install it using Odin.

Firstly thanks for the detailed reply.
I remember that from installing CM on my tablet but presumably you still need to Root the S4 to be able to install CM?

A few more questions please:
1. So when you run Odin it will ask for the location of the TWRP Recovery v2.8.7.0 folder?
2. Is this the best place to get Odin? - http://odindownload.com/
3. That link says I need "ADB & FASTBOOT TOOLS", where do I get these for the S4?

Oh great thanks. I noticed it was a smaller download. Is there much missing from it over the official one?
Thanks again Strephon.
1, 2: No. You only need to flash the recovery through Odin to be able to install Cyanogenmod.
2. I believe the apps that all can be downloaded from the Play Store are missing, which is a good thing.
4: You need to input the location of TWRP on your hard drive. Search on XDA for the most current version of Odin (3.10.6) and ignore that site's comment about ADB & Fastboot Tools. Simply download Samsung's drivers off their website and install them. As an alternative, you can install Kies, but make sure Kies isn't running when you run Odin.

Great. Thanks for the further help. I'm nearly there, just a few more questions please:
Do I need to enable USB Debugging?
Running Odin and it's unclear what to do next? I presume these instructions under "Odin Install Method (No Root Required)" are correct? - https://twrp.me/devices/samsunggalaxys4internationalqualcomm.html
Those instructions say to press the PDA button, there is no PDA button. Do I press the AP button instead?
In Odin options is it safe to leave "F. Reset Time ticked"? It looks like it is.
The TWRP 2.8.7.0 in the Optimized CM12.1 thread only offers a ZIP file and the link here only offers an IMG file: https://dl.twrp.me/jfltexx/. But it looks like Odin needs a TAR file. Any ideas?
I presume this (Micro) GAPPS is as good to install as the GAPPS link in the Optimized CM12.1 thread (it's newer, just want to be sure it's compatible)? - http://opengapps.org/
Finally, is it a good idea/recommended to convert to F2FS?
Googling and it's unclear if I want "F. Reset Time" ticked or I should be converting to "F2FS", so I thought I should be sure first. Great I already have Kies installed.
Thanks again. I'm pretty close to installing CM12.1 now.
It won't hurt, but in download mode it shouldn't be needed.
Yes.
The instructions assumed an older version of Odin. Press the AP button.
If Odin fires up with it enabled by default, I'd leave it as is.
Grab the 2.8.7.0 TAR from https://dl.twrp.me/jfltexx/ and install it through Odin. Afterward, you can change over to the F2FS-compatible version using the upgrade instructions given on the twrp.me install page.
It should be compatible, but you may have better luck using the version in the thread.
F2FS is totally optional. I personally don't use it.
Thanks for the quick reply again. There is no 2.8.7.0 TAR file in that link, just a 2.8.6.0 TAR file .
* I presume I should install 2.8.6.0 TAR then install the 2.8.7.0 IMG file on top from inside TWRP?
* OR better yet install 2.8.6.0 TAR using Odin then install 2.8.7.0-F2FS ZIP from inside the TWRP 2.8.6.0 Recovery itself? I presume I use the same Install option I do to install CM2.1 itself?
I didn't look carefully at the page. Sorry. But yes, you can grab the 2.8.6.0.tar, install it, then install either of the 2.8.7.0 images afterward in TWRP.
Thanks Strephon Alkhalikoi. I finally got around to doing this last night and it went without a hitch. I got a pit error using Odin but a quick Google said to plug the USB cable direct into the PC.

[Help] I can't root or install cm

Hi.
I bought the nvidia shield android tv pro (500GB model). the built-in OS is... well you probably know it`s bad...
so I installed the custom rom from here http://forum.xda-developers.com/android/development/rom-t3138575
the custom rom works fine and I just wanted to install cm and supersu. however, when I boot TWRP (2.8.6.0) and try to install, it fails (can`t mount storage).
I tried it a few times and couldn't get it to work.
the only solution I can think of is installing TWRP (instead of just booting to it). should I do that? I thought it`s best to keep the original recovery.
Thanks!
Images attached.
I'm not an expert, but I had trouble rooting too. With my 16 GB model I had to manually mount the relevant partitions in TWRP (fill in the checkboxes in "Mount") before I flashed SuperSU. Also, it appears that you're using teletype's TWRP? I think that's for the 16 GB model only. Make sure you're using Steel01's latest version here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/and...very-twrp-2-8-6-0-shield-tv-variants-t3140926
Also, what do you mean by "install cm"? Because there's not yet any working build of CyanogenMod that I know of for this device.

I tried manualy mounting... it doesn't mark the checkbox, only logs 'can`t mount /...' .
I used the TWRP posted in this forum (all varients) - the same one you sent.
by "install cm" I meant "install google`s stuff":
Gapps for CM 12.1 arm64 version: http://wiki.cyanogenmod.org/w/Google_Apps
(from here http://forum.xda-developers.com/android/development/rom-t3138575)
basicaly I don't have to root. it's just a bonus. however, I do HAVE to install somehow google`s apps (mainly the play store). how do I do that?
i installed the default supersu that come with the twrp and the update supersu trough the play store and issues was fixed, it was the easier thing to do, goo luck

I will recommend you to first upgrade your Android version to lollipop with latest firmware version ww-3.24.40.87 .
After upgrading, root your device and after that unlock your bootloader.
For rooting method, search in Asus zenfone 5 forum.
And for unlocking bootloader you can visit this link below-
https://forum.xda-developers.com/zenfone-5/general/guide-how-to-unlock-bootloader-safely-t3562640
After unlocking bootloader you need to flash the TWRP Recovery. You can unlock bootloader and install twrp together in just one click. For that just visit the above link provided.
Now I'm assuming that you have rooted your phone and also your bootloader is unlocked and latest twrp is installed. So now head over to "Android development" forum of zenfone 5 and search for Resurrection Remix 5.8.2 by tank0412. This ROM is stable and also the developer is providing weekly updates.
I hope that this will help you out.

Yes. T00F and T00J both are same.
Just download it from official Asus website.
Just remember your SKU which is ww, tw, or cn.
To check your SKU, go to settings - about phone - and there check which firmware you have officially.
If you have WW firmware then you have to download ww firmware from the Asus website.
Eg. WW > WW
TW > TW
CN > CN
I successfully rooted and unlock the phone.
I failed to update the firmware.

If your phone is rooted and you have successfully unlocked the bootloader with TWRP installed then now you are ready to install the custom nougat ROM. No need to upgrade your android version with stock firmware. Just proceed forward and follow what I'm saying -
Click here to download Ressurection Remix v5.8.2 nougat ROM
Visit the above link and download the RR ROM.
After downloading the RR ROM, now you have to download the GApps Pico 7.1 x86
Put the downloaded ROM zip file and GApps zip file in your external memory card.
Now steps for flashing the ROM -
1. Reboot to recovery.
2. Go to Wipe section - Advanced Wipe, and then select the cache, dalvik cache, system, data, internal.
After selecting the above, now swipe to wipe.
3. After wiping, go back to wipe section again and tap on "Format Data", and type "yes" and press ok.
4. After formatting completed, go back to main screen and then go to Install section, and locate the ROM zip file. Select it and swipe to flash.
5. Now your ROM is flashed, so go back again and select the GApps zip file and swipe to flash.
6. Now flash the SU Addon (If you want the root access) (OPTIONAL) If you don't want then you can skip this step.
7. Now your ROM and GApps both are flashed, so now go back to main screen again and then go to reboot section, then select "REBOOT SYSTEM"
That's It. You have successfully flashed the new nougat ROM.
First boot will take approx. 5 - 10 mins.

You cannot flash nougat ROMs with twrp 2.8.6 ,.... As you will end up with several errors so better switch to latest twrp I.e twrp 3.0 xx versions by xanwar . after that you can follow juyels method of flashing the ROM .
Download the twrp version from below link .
1:If you downloading zip file then flash through your old recovery and reboot to recovery .
2: if you downloaded .IMG file then flash through fastboot using the below code
Code:
fastboot flash recovery <filename>.img

Assuming your phone is rooted, running on a custom ROM & TWRP is working properly, you must download an Android 6.0 ARM package from the gapps website.
You can use the type you want but many people use pico or nano. Check the information on each package & choose the one that suits your needs.
There is also an Aroma full package with an installer, if you use this you can choose exactly which Google apps to install.

If you installed a stock Samsung ROM there is no reason to install Gapps.
Gapps is for custom ROMs that don't have the minimum Google stuff like Playstore/Search already included.
Anyway, as you asked how to install a gapps zip file, the gapps file is an "installable zip" file that requires an app like TWRP recovery to be launched.
How then do I get playstore on my phone (SM-A5108) I tried installing latest playstore apk but that didn't work?

TWRP, Rooting and Custom Rom HELP SM-T510 Tablet Tab A 10.1

Hey guys, this is my first post. I just bought a Samsung SM-T510 and would like to unlock all the features. I'm currently trying to follow multiple guides on how to do so. I've been following https://forum.xda-developers.com/gal...-16-0-t3987317 alongside with https://forum.xda-developers.com/gal...howto-t3989361 and I'm pretty confused on the method order i need to follow. What I mean is do I install rom first, TWRP, Magisk etc.?

So given all that info, i think i have all the software to do this between kernels, rom, twrp, odin, magisk, multi disabler? and i think thats all.
My sm-t510 build number is T510XXU2ASK5, looking through the lineage rom guide, I click the link https://samfrew.com/model/SM-T510/ and i see different versions. I'm honestly completely confused about this file and how I'm going to use it. I understand it to be the stock rom? as in factory software? With TWRP too, the numbers don't match my current build number leaving me very confused.
Do I need to downgrade my build number (i don't know if it's even a thing just asking)?
I think i can do everything relatively easy once I have an understanding of what to do first (order of things) and the specific files for the specific steps. When I'm reading these guides, I honestly have no idea which download goes for what. For ex. going back to https://forum.xda-developers.com/gal...-16-0-t3987317 like what do I need to download, the build number listed in notes regarding kernel or go to the download section right below and use that? Or both and if both, how do I use them separately for there a specific purpose? I cannot find anything that makes me feel comfortable rooting/custom rom on my device. Not comfortable in terms of I don't know what I'm doing exactly. I have put days of reading into this and still, I cannot figure out how to do this. I would really appreciate it if someone could help me. This is stressing me out and I would like to get this done before Monday due to me having some serious surgery. The reason being; I won't be as fresh on everything I've read recently.
I'm sorry if this post is choppy and all over the place. I'm just exhausted and clueless at this point. If I left any info out in order for someone to help me please let me know so I can provide it.
EDIT: The TWRP file ends in build number SK1, the file lineage-16.0-20191019-UNOFFICIAL-T510XXU2ASI4.tar.md5 doesn't match the TWRP file as well as my current build number; which ends in SK5. So nothing is matching the 3 last characters in my build number across all guides besides the samfrew link.
Also, I keep seeing i need a .tar TWRP file for recovery (?) but when I unzip both files are .img (named boot/recovery)
You don’t unzip the .tar files. Keep them as is.

I don't get a .tar file until I unzip the folder; I get a filed with .tar.md5
My recommendation would be to first upgrade to T510XXS2ASK1 of the OEM firmware, since that's the latest version for which Samsung has published kernel source. Use the latest release of Odin and install BL, AP and HOME_CSC. After this, unlock the bootloader and prevent VaultKeeper from relocking it by always enabling Debugger Options while connected to the Internet after a factory wipe.
From there, you could just install TWRP, install the latest MultiDisabler, and live with the Samsung firmware. You could even install Magisk to root. However, I prefer a clean Google OS without all the OEM bloatware, so I'd recommend installing the latest Nexus Stock (which includes TWRP and the custom kernel that disables Knox boot security features). Again, use Odin and install it to AP and do a factory wipe in TWRP because file-based encryption is still unsupported on these custom ROMs.
You could install LineageOS instead, but I haven't yet updated that for T510XXS2ASK1. I've just been busy and Andy hasn't been releasing any new LineageOS 16 GSIs. We're also pretty close to releasing a LineageOS 17 build.

Just rename the file cutting off the .md5.
is it possible to downgrade from sk5 to sk1? you cannot upgrade to a later version, and I know downgrading can have reverse effects on the tablet. I have same tablet I would like to know. if I flash sk1 is there a way to fix it if it bricks?

Hey guys, this is my first post. I just bought a Samsung SM-T510 and would like to unlock all the features. I'm currently trying to follow multiple guides on how to do so. To my understanding, my best bet is lineageOs 16.
More guides ive been following:
https://forum.xda-developers.com/gal...-10-1-t3934805
https://forum.xda-developers.com/app...mless-t3473445
https://topjohnwu.github.io/Magisk/i...system-as-root
I see posts saying I need and don't need Multidisabler so I'm confused on what I actually need: https://forum.xda-developers.com/gal...ption-t3963020
Another one: https://forum.xda-developers.com/gal...ption-t3919714

without reading answers i can say that im with YOU! Im almost 3 days to root my T510! We must RAMDISK YES in Magisk but to do that we need to extract recovery.img (https://www.droidwin.com/install-magisk-in-recovery-root-android/) from stock original ROM T510OXM5CUJ1 and Im stucked at the part NORAMDISK trying to patch recovery.img with Magisk Manager (with recovery mode checked) but i only get the "waiting for device in ADB" and I conect disconect USB C and nothing...Still NO RAMDISK...
I used 3 different ROMS but no lucky and tried with firmware CUJ1 but no lucky again. Without "NORAMDISK: YES" no root...stucked. But i saw a T510 with OrangeFOX!

I just finished flashing the latest Nexus ROM and rooted it with Magisk merely by flashing the Magisk zip file. You can flash the Nexus ROM without first flashing anything else but the latest CUL1 (not CUJ1) stock ROM. Nexus includes both TWRP and gapps. The only time you have to patch things to get Magisk installed is when you are trying to root a stock ROM instead of a custom ROM. Custom ROMs always to the patching for you.

Install TWRP to AP with Odin --> twrp-3.6.0_11-2-T510XXU5CUL1-20220218.tar ---> this put the tablet into emergency mode... had to do again "Hold Vol Up & Vol Down buttons during restart to enter Download mode" and reflash it again. stucked at this point. cant flash TWRP with that! Maybe this TWRP file its for Android 11.2 and im on 11?

You don't need to flash TWRP if you flash https://forum.xda-developers.com/t/...k-for-2019-galaxy-tab-a-10-1-sm-t510.4234889/ TWRP is built into this ROM. After installing stock CUL1, did you boot it, connect to wifi, skip the rest of setup and then enable Dev mode before rebooting to download and flashing from Odin?
edit: Don't attempt to download from the regular download link. Use the link under Build archives that says Android File Host and scroll down till you find the CUL1 md5 file.

EDIT: i dont have OEM unlock option in DEV but its unlocked, i checked when in downloaded mode it says "lock device and..." so its unlocked.

You must connect wifi and enable Dev mode before flashing. If, after flashing CUL1, you went through the regular setup routine and put in a Google Account, you must also enable OEM in Dev options.

USB cables are notorious for being flaky. Sometimes it helps to just turn the cable over and plug it back in. I always keep several on hand so that if I have connection problems I can try another cable.
