Fingerprint Sensor Disappointing - Samsung Galaxy S20 / S20+ / S20 Ultra Guides, News

So far, I like everything about the S20+ except the in-screen fingerprint sensor. The fingerprint sensor is too small and it only works about 75% of the time. The in-screen fingerprint sensor on my OnePlus 7 Pro was far superior. BTW, the S20+ still has the factory installed screen protector, as did my OnePlus 7 Pro.

might be silly, but registering 2 of the same finger can help.

Trying registering two thumbs under one profile. It could be all in my head but found it helps with accuracy.

i dont know.. maybe it is just me.. i never had any problems with fingerprints sensor.. and the in-display fingerprint sensor seems to be fast too! compared to my mom's in-display fingerprint sensor on her A50...
the trick is, know where to put ur finger

Love the S20
But fingerprint and the face unlock is pretty poor. My OnePlus 6t handled both much better...

I don't know about other phones, but yeah. The finger print scanner needs some help. Not atrocious, but just ok.

Almost makes me contemplate whether to just stick with my Pixel 4 XL, though I'm so used to Samsung phones otherwise. The S10 was OK for me in terms of fingerprint acceptance, but definitely worse than other phones I'd used before

The face unlock is very quick if the lighting is good, otherwise it struggles...the Finger print works great on my device...quicker then my s10+. I struggled to register my finger initially, but after it completed I was surprised how quick it was...Due to the size of my hands I know exactly how far from the bottom to place my finger to unlock the phone...if not almost 100% on the sensor then it takes longer

I haven't had any problems with accuracy on the sensor. Even works if my finger is moist or has an indentation from holding in landscape.
It's not incredibly fast, but it seems pretty solid to me. Certainly not problematic.
I don't use the face unlock so I have no input on that.

I am struggling with fingerprint reader as well. I have registered both thumbs and index fingers but the fingerprint unlock is damn slow and the sensor fails to register fingerprint. Most of the time I see "press a little harder" notification. I fear I may end up cracking the display with harder finger presses. Coming from SGS9, this fingerprint reader is a downgrade! On the other hand face unlock seems quite snappy, but how secure is face unlock?

I am finding the exact opposite to you ... In screen sensor is fast and accurate, works maybe 9 out of 10 times. I registered my thumb 2 times
Are you using the original Samsung factory fitted film screen protector or have you replaced it with tempered glass protector?
The ultra sonic in screen sensors do not play nicely with glass screen protectors at all. The infra red in screen sensors on the Samsung A range handsets works fine with tempered glass, I don't k ow why Samsung went for infra red on the S range personally

I'm glad the sensor is working for you. I'm still using the factory installed screen protector and I plan to replace it at some point with the Whitestonedome tempered glass. Although the sensor is working for you, the problems with Qualcomm's ultrasonic technology are pretty well known:

Try changing the setting to be more sensitive to screen touches and reregister your fingerprints. My S20+ works so much better than my S10 did. Faster and more accurate. A very quick firm touch is all you need press to long it keeps looking it won't open the screen till you let go.

Yeah it's working fine on mine but i recorded 3 sets of my right thumb and 3 sets of my left thumb.. Having multiple records of the same finger helps a lot

Working just as well for me as on the Note 10+. Even at least as fast as on my OP7T Pro.

I tried this for my S20+ and I saw a huge difference in the speed of my fps when the phone is off and you have just a blank screen.
Settings > tap search icon in top right > type "optimize battery usage" in search bar > tap "optimize battery useage" until you get to the apps screen > tap to show all apps > go to com.samsung.android.biometrics > toggle this off.

Touch Screen Doesnt Always Respond

Hi
Anyone else having problems with the touchscreen taking maybe 5 presses for you to be able to select for example a menu option? This is really starting to bug me now. So much so I'm thinking of sending it back to t-mobile and cancelling the contract.
Any help/suggestions would be appreciated.
Cheers
Andy
Try an Calibration in the settings menu.
There isn't a screen calibration setting on this handset. I wasn't aware we had to do this on these capacitive screens.
My X10 doesn't work like that at all. How hard do you press? Does it work in one press if you press harder?
Press harder on as capacitive display?
You'll have to place your second hand on the metal frame and it'll work perfect.
Dry hands are also not good.

Yeah. If you press harder a larger area of your finger touches the display. I.E. more for the digitizer to sense.

I'm definitely noticing this. I'm not exactly the type of guy to regularly moisturize my hands. I work in construction, and this capacitive screen absolutely sucks for me. I've been using resistive screens beautifully up to this point. I find I often have to lick my thumb regularly to get the screen to work properly. I have a ton of trouble unlocking the phone, since the screen thinks I've lifted my thumb halfway through the pattern. Using swype is a nightmare for this reason as well.
There are resistive multitouch screens on laptops and desktops now. I hope we see a swing back to resistive screens on smartphones.
I'm experiencing this problem aswell an i'm pretty much sure this is all software related, you can actually see the interface reacting to the press but it seems like the device never executes the action forcing you to press multiple times, annoying as hell yes! I sincerely hope SE fixes this in the next update.
Has anyone had any problems with accuracy? In some apps the touch registers like 5mm below where I actually touch.
I think the stock screen protector hinders the touch sensitivity quite a bit. Try getting a thinner screen protector. There is a thread talking about how sensitivity and accuracy improved when they took theirs off.

Thanks for the tip but I already have an uberthin protector. That brand has worked very well on all other capacitive displays I've had. I'm suspecting a software bug rather than a hardware issue.

I jammed my X10 in a sports armband for Ipod touch, it has a very thick plastic window and it did not affect the sensetivity a bit so i dont think the thin stock protector will do any difference. Just my opinion

I've noticed that on the dialer application.
Sometimes, while I am on Recent Calls section, I press the green telephone next to a contact and it calls the one right below it!
Haven't ever noticed any sort of oddness like that... and I have a thick screen protector on top of the stock one.
Occasionally I'll type a letter wrong, but that seems to have improved with the update from two weeks ago.

DVP case line up correctly?

I bought a dell venue pro and although the gap between the screen and keyboard sections seems consistent, I am noticing that the angle does not flow perfectly.
I would expect that if I swipe my finger along the angle of the case on the top and bottom that it should be smooth, however, there is a small bump where the angle seems to be inconsistent. This is hard to explain, however, hopefully those of you with the device know what I am talking about.
How is the case on yours? Does it line up perfectly? Inconsistent angle? Toughts? Thanks.
I see exactly what you mean, I think it's ok. It hasn't stopped me enjoying mine.

I've had 3 DVPs. First one I dropped, the 2nd one needed replacement and the third is perfect. the first 2 lined up perfectly. This 3rd one is slightly offset. But....the device runs perfectly and has for almost 2 months.....I'll be living with the offset !!!

dots on screen ?

i was looking on one device on the bestbuy store and when i was
deflecting the device i could notice the a matrix of spots/dots on screen
that never disappear only if i hold the device in some angle it would be not noticeable...
so i wanted to ask:
1. Am I the only one that saw that?!
2. if i will put a protect cover on screen it will make this dots/spots not seen?
Perfectly normal. The glass is supposed to be Gorilla, so I wouldn't even bother with a protector.
Sent from my Kindle Fire using xda premium
why is that normal ?
i haven't saw that on a PlayBook or a iPad or a Samsubg tab...
so why is this normal ?!
That's the grid for the capacitive touch sensor. On some devices it's more visible than others. I guess Amazon is using one of the more visible ones on the Fire.
Since this is bothering me very much, do you think if i would apply over it a protector it would be non-visible ?
Eh I can't see it on mine at all. Maybe It's just the display.

I doubt it, but you can try. FWIW, I can see the dots, but they only appear at an angle with certain glare on the screen. Doesn't bother me.
It's normal. You most likely noticed it due to light reflecting on it at a certain angle. My ipad had those, and my touchpad has them. I don't notice it unless the screen is off and its held at an off angle with a good amount of light reflecting off the surface. You don't notice it while it's on.
This was VERY visible on my Nexus One, but isn't on my Sensation. It's back on the Kindle, but you only notice it when.the screen is off. It depends on the display, and I think the more reflective the screen, the less you see.
Sent from my Sensation using XDA App
It has both dots and also a grid matrix. You can see it on every one, just have to turn the unit *just so* to see it.
My understanding from a post on Amazon about the device is that its not a capacitve or resistive touch screen but an infrared touch screen.
Confirmed myself that it is not capacitive as you can touch it with anything and it responds, where my iphone and Captivate do not.
Food for thought. Has anyone else heard of an IR touchscreen before?
Ive always been able to see the dots on every touch device I've owned. Just requires the right angle and light.

Yeah, they're just rarely used, because the technology has only been reasonably cheap/simple for a few years (iirc), whereas capacitative and resistant touchscreens have been around for much, much longer.
Also, touching the screen with a pen lid doesn't do anything for me. You sure it works with *anything*? I got it to work with a piece of moleskin, though, so... maybe it's just certain things?

Was just able to unlock using a paper napkin folded three times to make sure it wasn't skin touching anywhere. Tried with my leather wallet and it didn't react. Very strange. Also tried a microfiber cleaning cloth, didn't react on my iphone or captivate but worked on my fire. Wheird.

The Kindle with the IR touch screen is the Kindle Touch, which uses the IR touch screen because capacitive touch screens aren't available for the E-Ink screen yet. IR touch screens work by shooting IR lasers across the screen in a grid format, so a touch would trip IR lasers, and which lasers are tripped can be used to calculate where the touch is in. That's what they use on the Nook Simple Touch, too. I remember my old car built-in GPS was an IR touch screen. You could trick it by blocking the IR receivers.
Nowadays, most LED touch screens are capacitive, which is what's on the Kindle Fire (the reason why there's dots on the screen - I think they're the sensors that measure the capacitance to calculate the location of the touch).

[Q] Note 4 - Fingerprint Scanner Mod?

Is there a way to alter the way that the fingerprint scanner on the note 4 reads your finger? Currently it's a swipe ... is there a chance that it could be altered to just touch? Similar to to the iPhones Touch I'D?
Thanks.
That may prove to be difficulty. The iPhone uses an optical scanner. Meaning it basically takes a "picture" of your fingerprint. Whereas the GN4 uses a capacitive scanner. Meaning it uses an electrostatic field to actually measure the distances between the ridges and valleys of your fingerprints, and compiles a map of your print. Capacitive scanners usually require a "real" finger.

Great
Weird thread but ok. Love this phone actually, just wish the battery life was better and that the Moto team spent more time on the camera software.
Agreed battery life not as good as hoped and camera needs attention hopefully can be sorted with updates

This phone is a steal at its price point, android 1, great camera, great performance except for gaming which I haven't checked, good speaker and signal strength.
tl;dr of pros and cons
Pros
48MPx camera (quad pixel, 12MPx image and 5MPx depth sensor)
25 MPx FFC
4K Video (30fps)
Slow-mo ([email protected] and [email protected])
OIS (rear camera only)
Fingerprint sensor is relatively fast
Face unlock
21:9 LCD
HDR10 certified display that's bright enough on a sunny day
Reasonably loud speaker
Quick charging
Headphone jack
Overall design
Performance
Cons
Light bleed around the FFC on LCD
Fingerprint sensor is not reliable
Touch sensitivity is horrible white charging
Again, touch is less sensitive while using screen protector
Little bit buggy software (as of September 2019)
Camera app is bit slow
turbopower is QC 2.0, not the newer one QC3.0
GPS sometimes slower
Good to know stuff
NFC antenna is below fingerprint sensor
LCD is behind Gorilla Glass 2.5D
Back glass is Gorilla Glass 3D
Photos in low light might have purple-ish tint, but only sometimes ?

Did you start facing too much problems after android Q
related to LCD, system ui etc?
What was there a change in screen refresh rate after android Q? Please reply ASAP.
" LCD is behind Gorilla Glass 2.5D " ....
Let's see , I have this phone almost a year , first I was really in a hurry to put on a screen protector but due the curved screen I can't use it so since several months I use the phone without screen protector , only with a plastic back cover . I must say I'm surprised all this time the screen is scratchless , absolutely clean and bright . I don't know what Gorilla Glass class is but it's fine to me .
