Dear Friends,
I have done some serious criss cross flashing /modem/rom/recovery etc. (Rom upon rom) over the last months. I've recently had a soft brick and had to reinstall stock. I want a fresh start.
I feel like my phone's memory has been rewritten many times by now and that there are some resedues (crap files) in the system that I can't get out and that are slowing the system down. I'd like to do a full blown erase and restore to factory settings and then set up my custom roms again.
What is the best way to do this?
I am familiar with the use of Odin etc.
It would be delicious to get full instructions from you.
Best,
Thomas
Install a custom recovery like PhilZ and go to mounts and storage and then format system, cache, data, preload and SD card.
You will now have a totally clean system and can boot I to download mode and flash firmware in Odin.

You can't now. We always advise the people for read before do something. You can read in the guide:
"- Users are recommended to back-up all data before rooting the device."
*EDIT: You will have to wipe all (data/factory reset, cache and dalvik cache) and flash new stock firmware :highfive:

At first I forgot to tell you that my s4 is encrypted and i used the default encrypted from android.
In the past few days i doing some things could serve me in my case and I need help from everyone
1. i change the recovery to TWRP 2.7.0.1 using odin and i try to mount the storage but i do not find my data is't the data is removed ? but when the s4 boot before black screen he ask me my password for encryption and he knows is't wrong or not, Is this indicates my data is not removed ?
2.i try to find my data over using adb shell but i can not find anything.
My question is: Is my files still exist or not.
Can't you just try to wipe from the TWRP recovery.
1. Boot into the recovery. Then select Wipe. Then "Swipe to factory reset". This won't wipe your internal storage.
2. Flash a custom rom.
3. Boot.
You probably need an external sd card to put the rom on.
My guess is that it should work.

You need to be more specific. What data? You mean phonenumbers, text and apps? Those are lost.
Data on your internal storage like pictures, video and music are not going to be wiped.
Sorry to say, but you don't have any option execpt flashing firmware.
If you want to try other tricks etc so please be careful, your phone can be brick with single wrong step.

In last 3 days I flashed 4 different 4.4.2 firmwares on i9505 with ODIN. But I was surprised to see that after successful flashing I find everything same in sattings (Wallpaper, KK Launcher etc...) then I checked *ABOUT PHONE* to make sure that phone is flashed or not. But I was flashed, after that I went to recovery mode and factory reset to wipe everything. All I want to say that is it possible that after flashing my all settings remain same on newly flashed firmware...?

Im planning to reflash my phone back to stock as a few things are messed up, will be flashing via odin the base firmware is UEND6 and will reflash the same firmware so that I can still root w/o tripping knox, would reflashing via Odin clear user data?
i guess not

I guess just flashing the firmware won't wipe the data.
I flashed stock over a CM install and forgot to wipe data. My stuff was still there but the install was definitely a little bit unstable with background apps crashing. It didn't wipe data, but the phone needed a data wipe afterwards to be usable...

I kinda need to get my data back before wiping, I installed 3 new xposed modules and I am not 100% sure which of the 3 is causing the issue, Im stuck at the Samsung logo.
EDIT:
Im wondering if factory reset would delete camera photos stored on the internal memory, if not I have most of my impt stuff backed up online.

Install TWRP recovery (will trip knox) and make a TWRP backup of the entire phone including data partition. Once inside TWRP recovery you can also mount /data and adb pull whatever data you need from it, including the backup. Not sure what to do if you need to access embedded app data that you can not pull through adb.
When I flashed stock without wiping data my files were still there though.

Still waiting for the download to complete. Samfirmware is only giving me 300kb/s and I dont know where else to get stock firmwares.
To close this issue with a resolved status, I would like to say one thing.
If you flash a leaked firmware - it will wipe your phone.
If you flash a stock firmware - it will NOT wipe your phone.
Factory reset will not wipe your internal SD.
Installing TWRP or anything unofficial will trip your KNOX. If your data is worth losing warranty - go for it
I was with a UEND6 firmware and just gonna flash the same to get my data back and factory reset the phone.
EDIT:
Got my data, everything seems to be perfectly working aside from the task manger, Gonna factory reset the phone and probably reflash with odin to have a clean start, would ticking repartition be necessary for a fresh install ? ( but I remember that required a PIT file )
I have updated my phone to latest official 5.0.1 and have also installed the 355 mb update that came after the main lollipop update Have wiped cached and data and done a clean install yet i still have some of the lolipop bugs..They are as follows:
1. homescreen Wallpaper gets set to default wallpaper randomly.
2. Keyboard crashes few times in a day.
3. Using snapchat and other apps continuously causes the phone to reboot
4. Overheating...phone gets heated like mad.
I noticed most of this happens when I am on 3g and on wifi everything works smooth.
my phone is rooted. Please let me know if there are tweaks or apps that i can install to fix these bugs. Thanks so much!

I think you should try some custom roms which base on android 5.0.1 for S4, suggest Omega Rom v28 .
This will fix those bugs easily
hey thankss! Can i install custom rom n retain my data or i will hv to wipe the data???

Start with a clean device. Thus wipe your data.
It's not needed to wipe your internal storage. But make sure to wipe /system, /cache en /data (without internal storage).
Hey thanks for your reply. Can you tell me how to wipe data without wiping internal storage ?? Generally when i wipe data or do a factory reset it wipes everything.

Use custom recovery like TWRP.
Hi guys
I installed one S8 Port, and then tried another (Dirty Flash)
Then, i wanted to move back to the original S8 port i used. I did a clean install Wiped Storage Data and Davilk cache. But i still see some traces of the previous ROM? Ie like the launcher etc?
Should i format data again aswell? (I did this when i first flashed the first ROM, coming from stock?) or is there another sequence i should use?
yes you need format data to get rid of the current rom and then reflash the rom you would like.
Dirty flash is only used idf you do not want to lose data.
With custom roms, itis gfeneral a good idea to do a full delete and the flash.
