So i am relatively new to android and still have a few questions if anyone could help out...
I have rooted my s4 using cf auto root with out any issues other than i couldn't check the f.reset time box (not sure if that's unusual or not) so i then paid for and downloaded triangle away to reset the counter, now i'm rooted and back to official status, using nova launcher pro and able to receive OTA updates.
Currently haven't received the new update where i am yet (Australia) , the update which allows apps to be moved to sd and fixes a few other issues. Obviously i would like to get this update, I have paid for and downloaded mobile odin, i assume that when the new update is available i can download on my pc and transfer and install the file from my phone using mobile odin without restoring to stock? And once the update is installed i will need to root again?
I guess my main questions are, with the cf auto root am i able to install custom roms, am i able to update without losing the root, are their any available updates from other regions i can use without issues currently, i see a lot of talk about kernels and i am really lost when it comes to that as i haven't needed to change anything dramatic, it's all been pretty automatic, just want to make sure i'm not missing some important steps.
Thanks to anyone that bothers to reply.
First thing it sounds you have an I9505 so to be clear next time you better specify which you have mate
Second after rooting you wont have any official updates since phone is still rooted, instead download a rom and flash in CWM so of you dont have this recovery you have many options I recommend Philz....
3) you can get any firmware you like... as it goes for languages the guys already patch the roms well moat of them so that all languages are available so basicly any will do....
4) when flashing a firmware with MobileOdin you dont need to root again it has an option enabled by default saying to inject SU binary after each flash to be cool you wont have to REroot again

Yeah, soz, it's a I9505, so even after getting it back to official by using triangle away i can't get OTA updates? Cos before i used triangle away i checked for updates and it said "modified firmware, not able to update", now it's back to "you have the latest firmware available". Even If i was able to do OTA updates when available Would that cause issues, meaning i'm better off just doing a manual update now via mobile odin? Is the custom rom necessary for anything i'm trying to do, cos i'm pretty happy with just having it rooted and nova launcher. I haven't found anything i can't do that i want to be able to do yet. Thanks for replying.

I wouldn't wait for OTA updates as it will take a while, download the latest version which is I9505XXUBMGA from here and flash via Odin using a computer and your phone status will still be Official

Thanks man. My current build number is XXUAMDE , does that make a difference? Had a look but couldn't see exactly where i am meant to download it from on that page?

Alright, so i have downloaded and installed the 1.1gig update, i then backed up from a backup i made before updating, i then went and installed the programs that didn't auto install from the backup and a few of the ones that were removed in this update, I don't need to install those apps from the 337mb file you linked if i don't want to do i? I just installed cwm recovery (don't really know what i'm doing at this stage lol) cos i was having issues with bad wifi even with a good signal, and couple of force closes plus the issues i identified earlier and did "fix permissions" from cwm recovery, quick speed test or 10 and it is faster than normal, seems to be as smooth as it was before, haven't tested any games yet either for the rotation issue....
I updated my phone today and I was able to root it an disable KNOX.
I used CF-Autoroot http://autoroot.chainfire.eu/ and it worked flawlessly and when I was updating the binary I got the option to disable KNOX.
Root Instruction:
1. Flash with Odin
2. Add a google account incase it has not been setup yet.
3. Install SuperSU from Market.
4. Open it and it wil ask you to update binary.
Respect to the developer.
Futhermore, I got CWM with one of the methods I was using when on JB 4.1.2
PLS NOTE: You will lose warranty if phone is rooted at this time. If you will like to keep your warranty with no possibility to go back to an older android version, please AVOID rooting your ROM and wait for custom ROM with KNOX disabled
Cheers,
But.. I don't know whether to use the i9305 or I9305T files :/
My device is I9305T but has been running I9305 FW (and probably bootloaders) for a while...
For those who need some more links/instructions:
Backup your data, SMS, settings - and make sure you got an IMEI backup
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1946915
If you use Google's 2-Step Verification, make sure you can receive the SMS via a 2nd phone or have a backup option like landline or authenticator app.
I removed my SD card (just in case) and did a full system wipe just to get rid of everything I did to my system over the last year:
Hold down volume up, home and power buttons, when screen turns on, leave these buttons, do the full system wipe. (Don't think this is really necessary though.)
Install 4.3 on your i9305
http://www.androidegis.com/how-to/install-android-4-3-update-galaxy-s3-lte-i9305/
Switch the phone off after first book (at SIM PIN prompt).
Get CF-Auto-Root and install it
EDIT: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1957273
Now after your phone booted you can run the Samsung setup. Add your Google account.
Install SuperSU from the Play Store - not SuperUser
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=eu.chainfire.supersu&hl=en
Update the binary and disable KNOX
Enjoy
For me what worked, was installing PhilZ Touch (latest version), and using the built-in rooting function of the recovery. Then, installing SuperSU gave me perfect root.
Does anyone know if Koush's superuser app works in any way in this release? I would prefer to use an open-source superuser app.

No , it doesn't . By flashing CF-Root you will get Knox count 1 .

Uh. I think, at this point, that the best thing (for me) is to not update.
Update using Heimdall, and skip flashing tz.img and sboot.bin. Be aware that this will break WiFi until a custom kernel is released

But I think it would be kind of you to edit the OP to say in a very visible way that someone doing that looses his warranty with no possibility to go back at this time (until a solution is found, but no one knows if this will ever be the case ...) because of the new Knox bootloader and the new Knox warranty void flag.

Thanks mate for clarifying the issue of Knox flag and warranty. I will wait for a dev to make Knox-free rom.
if you'd like to have 4.3 stock rom with root and warranty, you can update your phone to 4.3 using Mobile Odin PRO latest version (3.85). Let's say you're on 4.1.2, just download 4.3 for your phone, move it to phone storage, flash it using Mobile Odin PRO with EverRoot and Inject Mobile Odin features. This way you'll have a 4.3 rooted in warranty.

I think I've read that Mobile Odin isn't able to flash the bootloader. If this is really the case then it is true (old bootloader = no Knox flag). Note that you will also need to flash a custom kernel cause stock 4.3 kernel without Knox bootloader breaks wifi.

What about triangle away? (Or downgrading to a earlier stock Knox free ROM and than triangleing away?)
Ok. So I've tried to ask this question before, and every time I get people telling me to do things I just don't understand. Sorry. Not trying to spam. If this question goes unanswered I will not post another and I apologize if this is too stupid. Just a noob trying to get help.
All I want is to update my phone (SM-G900F) to the most recent Android version. Like 3 weeks ago I got the prompt to update OTA because a new update was available. I've haven't modified my phone other than Towelrooting in July and having SuperSU and Titanium. Had planned to get way more root stuff but so far I haven't had the time.
OTA Update failed, told me my phone was modified in an unauthorized way and suggested to update through Kies.
Here's my question: What's the simplest, easiest way to update correctly? I'd rather do it one way or the other: Either, I unroot with SuperSU and remove Titanium, then download Kies and try to update, if successful I reroot with Towelroot OR: I can manage to update WITH Towelroot and SuperSU still there, if so, how?
That's all I'm asking. Would the first option work best? Is there a better way? I don't want to use Odin or anything like that, I don't want to use custom roms or anything, I'd just like to have the most recent update and root, that's it. Please put me out of my misery.

You can't have it both ways. Odin is the easiest, otherwise try Kies.

So would it work if I unroot with SuperSU, then install Kies on my pc and update to most recent Anroid version?
Or, if I'm already going to unroot first with SuperSU, can I then just try the OTA update and if successful, can I reroot with Towelroot or will that be outdated with the most recent Android version?
Download odin 3.09. Download the latest official firmware for your device, search the forums to find the latest one. Extract the .tar file inside the firmware zip u downloaded. Make sure you have the drivers installed for your phone on your computer. Extract Odin and run the .exe to open the Odin program. Put your phone into download mode> While Powered off hold volume down.. Home.. And power button. Press continue when given the warning plug in your phone to the PC.. Within Odin click the ap slot. Load the .Tar file which is your firmware. Make sure Odin recognizes your phone is plugged. Hit start. Sit back and watch it flash.

Ok. I hope this does not sound arrogant. But I honestly can't believe why anyone on this forum can't directly answer my question instead of giving me other suggestions. I don't want to use Odin, it's too complex for me and I don't want to mod my phone to hell and back. I just want to get the most recent update released 2 or so weeks ago.
Nobody has said whether the Kies method works (letting Towelroot remain on my phone and trying to download most recent Android version with Kies on my pc), or whether I unroot with SuperSU, remove all root apps (I only have 3), then try the OTA update just with my phone and see if that works. Can somebody please just answer that? PLEASE
..
I think I'm correct in saying the most recent ota comprised on little more than minor tweaks and security updates.
The world's not going to come to an end if you don't have the very latest update.
Perhaps more research BEFORE choosing the root route would have been wise, at least then you would be more informed as to the outcome of your chosen option.
Having read the last few posts it's clear to me, even as a relative S5 noob that your questions been answered quite comprehensively. Just not the install an app and reboot option you were hoping for.

I did that before rooting and I got the same can't install ota due to modified yada yada.....
I reverted back to Dalvik and the ota installed no problem. As I said.... This was pre rooting so might not be relevant.

from reading the replies above i think the answer is no it wont but why not just give it a try, if its not going to work it will just tell you so (like the ota update did)
your options as stated above are to either use odin and install the latest update or take it to a shop or find someone who is close to you who knows how to use odin and ask them if they wouldnt mind doing it for you and buy them a beer as a thankyou,
odin isnt hard to use in fact it couldnt be any easier to use for a noob just follow a couple of simple steps and your done
i hope you get this sorted

Towelroot after latest OTA-Update doesn't work!
I don't know if the idea of an update is so good.
My SM-900F was Towelrooted to run Titanium, too.
My setup was "OTA when in a WIFI network" and clicked "update yes" - I was typing some notes very late,
the message box popped up and --- swoosh --- the Update was running. No need to say my notes weren't saved?
I don't even know what that update contained and what it was good for.
Now I run 4.4.2 ,
Baseband G900FXXU1ANG2
Kernel 3.4.0-2089850 [email protected] #1 July 3rd 2014
Build KOT49H.G900FFXXU1ANG2.
Root access has gone, Towelroot says "device not supported", Titanium doesn't work anymore.
No I have to start Windows only to run KIES - waf.
So be careful.
Dirk
Ok, so I have unrooted with supersu and removed Titanium. Supersu is still there. I've tried to do an OTA update, and surprisingly this time it actually went so far as to actually download the updates. Then after I press install, it goes into boot mode and says like 20% or more installed, then it goes black and reboots, everything is normal but the update failed.
What. Now.
They should really start telling people that rooting will cause updates to become a nightmare. Please help me, this is ridiculous.

Lack of common sense is my diagnosis.
Of course it's not always going to be plain sailing. And early days with any new handset means there are answers we just don't know yet.
That's why pretty much every thread has a precursor from the Dev that says "use at your own risk","read instructions fully before flashing" or " it's not my fault if your dog gets fleas or your nan pegs it" etc etc etc. If you have any doubts rooting your phone wasnt for you..... you shouldn't have rooted.

Did you use Triangle Away to reset the system status and binaries to official? If not reroot with Towelroot again, use Triangle Away to reset the counters (besides the KNOX flag), unroot with the superSU app, then flash a stock rom with Odin and after that factory reset. Your device is official now.

Apparently this does not prevent OTA's. Like most, I didn't like Magazine UX or Knox so I flashed. Tripped the Knox Warranty Void =1. So I went to Sammobile and downloaded the July 2014 release and flashed it. Lo and behold, when I hit software updates it started downloading. Will let you know of my progress.

Its not clear that is the case either. Reports may vary, but at least some have said KNOX fuse tripped does not void warranty.
The main purpose for KNOX counter is for corporate IT staff to see that phone is untampered, and safe for enterprise use and various KNOX security apps.

Regardless of what it's meant for, if you trip Knox and then try to do an OTA you will get a message telling you you can't do that. Now, apparently manually flashing something removes that restriction, which is great, but the fact remains.

Its not clear that is the case either. Reports may vary, but at least some have said KNOX fuse tripped does not void warranty.
The main purpose for KNOX counter is for corporate IT staff to see that phone is untampered, and safe for enterprise use and various KNOX security apps.

I used Odin to flash the July 2014 relase. Prior to that I had the current relase falshed through Odin When I would check for updates it would tell me my device was modified. Going back to July and letting it OTA to current, now when I check for updates it says the latest software is installed.

You're right, I wasn't completely clear on the details of the situation (once modded, I don't believe in OTAs) so thanks for clarifying.

Again, thanks for the clarification.
It's not the Knox status that matters for OTAs. It is the flag that identifies your setup as Custom that prevents OTAs. That is a result of having a custom recovery. For example, if I root my device, tripping Knox, and later decide to Odin back to stock without custom recovery, I can (and have) receive OTAs because my status is returned to Official. I can then re-root, flash custom recovery (thus resetting status to Custom), and no longer receive OTAs.

Weird, all I did was root my T900 (via Odin), without installing a custom recovery, and was subsequently unable to take an OTA. I didn't really mess with it after that -- I switched to CM shortly after -- but that was my very limited experience. Could have been a fluke.
If you used CF Auto Root, part of the automated process mucks with recovery to achieve root (thereby rendering your status as Custom). One can Odin flash back to complete stock (which unroots and resets recovery to Official), but Knox remains tripped.

Great info, thanks! THis is my first Samsung / Knox device so still learning the basics.
Would it be safe to dirty flash (flash without wiping /data, only /cache and dalvik) latest stock ROM over older stock ROMs (modified with custom recovery)?
Sorry to necro-ish-post. Just got one of these on sale and I'm getting used to the "Samsung Way" after a Nexus tablet.
Suppose I've rooted my ROM without tripping Knox. I'd imagine if another OTA comes along it might fail due to modifications to the ROM. Can I use Odin to reflash the system part of the ROM back to stock without tripping Knox, so that the OTA will subsequently work?

Yep. You can get a stock ROM and flash it with ODIN. Knox won't be tripped and you will loose root. Other thing you can do is stay rooted, and flash with ODIN the new ROMs as soon as they are available. Instead of re-flashing the same ROM you are on right now, so you can get an OTA, why not wait until a new ROM is released and flash that new ROM then? You can reroot then, if you want (towelroot). Of course you have to keep an eye on the forum so you know when a new ROM is available. Or check samfirmware from time to time :good:
Good to know. I don't know if Lollipop is ever on the agenda for Tab Pro, but if so I'd imagine there won't be a way to get it Towelrooted.
HELP!!! U.S. version of sm-T520
I have the Sm-T520nzwaxar. I needed to flash a firmware to revert it to stock. I was aware of the region based firmwares, but I still flashed one. The process failed near the end. Odin said "Failed" and my tablet remained in download mode, didn't boot. Now, I have a tablet that is pretty damn bricked. It will only go to a screen saying "Firmware upgrade encountered an issue. Please select recovery mode in Kies & try again" and Download Mode.
I have determined that there is no such firmware for T520nzwaxar, despite being the U.S. model. The only thing I can hope for now is that such a file does exist or another firmware from another country would work.
PLEASE any help that can be given to a frimware that would work with this would be HUGELY appreciated.
Hello there,
So, I have a Samsung Galaxy S5 G900R4 with U.S. Cellular. I've heard of rooting your phone, and I decided I'd give it a try. Now, the rooting went fine, and the phone was working like a charm, until I started to have some issues. SuperSU needed to update its binary, and I allowed it to try, but it continued to tell me that it could not update it. Hence, I let it reboot when it offered. Now, for whatever reason, the phone won't boot past the U.S. Cellular 4G logo that appears, it just sits there on that screen.
Now so far, I haven't been able to find anyone that has encountered this specific problem, as most people say their soft-bricks are bootlooping and whatnot. I'm not sure if my specific case is technically a soft brick, or something else, but I wanted to just return it to stock format. I loaded up Odin again, downloaded the 1.5g firmware file, and I got the SW REV CHECK FAIL error.
I did some research, and I searched EVERYWHERE, and the closest I could find to a solution was http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2798396 <-- this thread. Which makes sense, when I read it. I'm guessing the bootloader is locked on my phone, or something. The problem is that this thread is for the Galaxy S5 G900AU, and I don't have that phone.
Maybe I'm just not searching on the web enough, or I didn't search the site well enough, but I have not been able to locate a similar set of AP, CP and CSC files for my specific model.
I would really appreciate it if someone could point me in the right direction or, if the issue I'm actually having with my phone is NOT a soft-brick and there is another solution, suggest another way for me to fix the phone.
Thank you.
First off, I'd try clearing the caches from recovery
If that fails, factory reset from recovery
If that fails, (And I'm not sure about stock firmwares with ODIN & locked bootloaders) I'd try flashing stock from ODIN also
Grab stock ROMs from here
sammobile . com / firmwares / database /SM-G900R4/
Can't link it here, as SM links are not allowed - just remove the spaces

Well last night I went ahead and used recovery to clear cache, and then I did a factory reset. I just did it again, now, but I guess I'll have to download the file from SM to try. I already have a stock ROM, but I can't remember where I downloaded it from, so it may actually be a 4.4.2 ROM or something, which would explain why it won't work. I'll wait for the 5.0 ROM to download and give it a try, should take a little more than an hour and a half, then I'll report back.

Any idea what's happening with the phone to cause it to stay at the U.S. Cellular screen?
I never let SuperSU reboot when I let it update the binaries
Could be a number of things, possibly just corrupted a file necessary for boot, but as SuperSU has root, it could be anything
I don't know the ins and outs of how SuperSU works, but I know a few carrier specific US S5s have a locked bootloader, Verizon, AT&T etc - not sure if rebooting to allow the binary update requires an unlocked bootloader, maybe that bricked it, half assed attempt at a root process failed maybe

As far as I know, though, U.S. Cellular has confirmed that this device has an unlocked bootloader. And besides that, if it were locked, wouldn't that have come up as an issue when I rooted the device? I used the CWM custom recovery tool.
On a similar note, I'm not even sure if the problem was a locked bootloader. It's just that, from what I've read with other people having the same issue, they solved it by excluding the BL file from the flash and instead only using the AP, CP and CSC files.

If you can flash anything custom from ODIN, bootloader is unlocked, afaik, locked bootloaders require a right mess on to get anything flashed to them
To root with a locked bootloader, is easily possible if you're on a certain KitKat ROM, and use Towelroot - other than that, (From what I've read), you need to use specific tools, so it sounds like your bootloader is indeed unlocked - which makes this next ROM flash, much more likely to work using only ODIN
Use ODIN 3.10.6 though
My experience with the S5 is with an unlocked bootloader (G900F), so I can only quote what I know about locked from what I've read, but it sounds like that doesn't matter in your case

It worked! Thank you so much for the help, I really appreciate it.
Well, my warranty is now void. Is there a safer way to root the phone, or should I just leave it be?

Great
Flashing a stock ROM won't void your warranty, but if it is indeed void (KNOX 0x1), then just flash this with ODIN
http://download.chainfire.eu/404/CF-Root1/CF-Auto-Root-klteusc-klteusc-smg900r4.zip
Tripping KNOX only happens when you flash something not signed by Samsung, IE: A custom recovery, ROM or Kernel etc
I have the same issue, same phone I ended up flashing a custom ROM because I luckily flashed twrp before it bricked on the us cellular screen.. How did you fix this I just want to get back to stock remove my root completely
