Could use some pointers, as it's been a while since I have ever tried to root/flash a GSI image (last time was my old phone running Oreo), and this is my first Pixel.
Did searching, and tried a few things, but am running into a hiccup -
Following this message here:
Using the vbmeta.img from this post, and downloading an AB GSI image, following those steps will cause my phone to boot up, play the initial Google logo, and then get locked on the "G" logo on white screen, never getting into the ROM.
For some reason my memory is failing me, and I feel like I'm forgetting something - or am I using (a) wrong method somewhere?
Thanks all-
Mike

Guys,
I'm not even sure where to start with what I'm seeing, but maybe you can help me.
I have had Timur's ROM on my N7 2012 for a couple years. It's been crashing randomly, even though I have few things installed on it, and a good power supply. I took it out of my car and put it on an iPad 2 amp supply, and it still crashed a bunch so I knew I needed to wipe and reinstall. I also wanted to go from 4.2.2 to 5+, which I know takes away a lot of the good features I need (like power on/deep sleep).
I booted into TWRP and wiped my tablet, which appeared to softbrick it (I think I have the usage right from searching). I downloaded the Pure Nexus 6.0.1, CM13, and already had Autodroid ROMs to use. I tried to install Pure through ADB sideload, and got it installed. When I finished and tried to reboot, it said I had no OS. When I rebooted, I got the boot animation, and nothing else.
Long story short, I tried Autodroid and CM13, and using CM13 I got it back going. Unfortunately, every time I try to flash another ROM over it, it will no longer go past the boot screen. With CM13, it boots properly, but doesn't like the gapps pico I tried to install (error message when booted, keeps returning to the same pop up error).
I'm quite sure there's something I'm missing, but I don't know what it is.
Thanks!
Eric
Ok, before anyone goes nuclear on me, I think I better understand what happened. When I got ANYTHING to work, I stopped doing anything. As I understand, it wasn't functioning...it was just in a temporary mode of some sort.
After not being able to get it to work properly, I used this: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1781250 to try and restore the system. I followed all the directions, except for using the 5.1.1 version of the ROM, and used the corresponding file name for the zip file used.
After doing so, the bootloader won't go to TWRP, but goes to the pic as seen below. I did reboot the tablet, and after waiting quite a while, the tablet came on, but I don't understand what that picture means.
Thanks!
Eric
Ok...I realized that I lost root. I'm fixing it now. I had read before, but didn't understand what I saw.
Thanks,
Eric
A little bit of background.
Prior to this problem I was running dirty unicorns and elementalx kernel. Given that lately I had some freezing issues I decided that iro was time to update my ROM. Being the first time that I manually update a ROM and not having found anything online I thought (dumb decision) that all I had to do was to flash the most recent version. After I did that the phone did an app optimization (idk if that's how it's called, basically it optimised all the apps for the new version of the ROM) . After that the phone wasn't booting up, the dirty unicorns loading screen was running for half an hour and nothing happened so I restated the phone. When it asked for my sequence a message popped up "it looks like your vendor image is obsolete". The phone still wasn't booting up so I decided to restart once again and install the latest vendor image. After that the phone wasn't booting up so I decided to do a backup with twrp (version 3.0.0.0) and do a factory reset.
Plot twist the twrp decryption sequence (that worked 10 minutes before) now wasn't working so I had no way to access any of the phone's files.
Basically the phone won't turn on and I have no way of accessing it's files
I'd try a factory reset but there are some photos and whatsapp messages that are important to me and I'd rather not lose them.
Any tips?

The best thing to do is this guide. http://forum.xda-developers.com/nexus-6p/general/guides-how-to-guides-beginners-t3206928/page384. Just go full stock without formating the internal. Flash twrp and see if you can get your photos. Next time back your photos up with Google photos if available in your area. Good luck

To update a ROM all you usually need to do is flash the newer version, but you also need to flash the newer vendor.img of the updated ROM is based on a newer Google build. Failure to do this is what caused the "it looks like your vendor image is obsolete" message to appear. I'm guessing you know this though as you went on to flash it later.
Not sure what happened with TWRP but you've done something else wrong at some point. Best idea (as pointed out above) is to flash the factory images. You can try it without formatting userdata in order to retrieve whatever it is that's important on your storage, but once you've retrieved whatever you need (if you even can) you'll need to format it because you really need to start fresh.
Hey guys,
I was running a old version of android (6.0.1) and wanted to upgrade my rooted phone today. Decided to try out Oreo, followed a guide that involved using fastbooting various files (bootloader, radio, boot, system, vendor). I got no errors along the way. My phone went past the android logo once and "optimized" my apps, restarted and was stuck loading the android logo. It now just keeps trying to load the android logo and reboots into TWRP recovery. After recovering, I am now stuck on the Google image while booting up.
Does anyone have any tips? Can I just try flashing a older version of android? Or is there a better way to fix this problem. Any help is appreciated and thanks in advance!
Edit: Was able to fix my issue. For anyone who is having similar problems, follow step 9 from Heisenberg's guide. Since I was updating from such an old version, a lot of the programs were incompatible with the newer android version and causing issues.
I received an update push from Motorolla that installed Nougat. After that, my phone would crash every 3-10 minutes. I did all the troubleshooting I could find online. I contacted support and they wanted me to spend $150 to get it "refurbished." Of course, it sure seems like a software problem, so that wouldn't help me anyways...
I turned to custom. After rooting, installing SuperSU and TWRP, I couldn't get several versions of AICP or Lineage to ever boot (stuck on loading screens). I also tried all the advice from this thread.
I went back and installed the stock Rom using f2fs , and the phone would get to the "hello moto" part of the boot up, then crash and reboot. I tried again using EXT4, and it worked, but just like before I ever begun, my phone was crashing every 3-10 minutes. However, the first crash wasn't until after I made a phone call, and my phone had been crash free for about 20 minutes before that call.
I'm a I.T. guy, but I'm not a "phone" guy. But it seems to me that there must be some other software that was modified during the update that is causing the problems that isn't part of ROMs. Something in the Kernal, or a driver folder or something?
Also, is there a way to get crash reports? So maybe if I at least go back to the default ROM and wait for it to crash, I have some info to work with?
Any help is greatly appreciated, thanks!
Flash full stock 6.0x for your model/region.
Important:
Without bootloader, gpt. Don't try locking BL.
Links you can find in my signature.
Try normal boot and after success any custom.
You cannot allow any ota update after it.
Some customs are only for Nougat modem/radio - don't flash it. @Kaivian
Ok, I got most of that, except I don't know what gpt refers to and am not getting any hits on search.
My signature - flashing stock - without bootloader & gpt.
So, I installed a 6.0 stock ROM and got tons of errors. I tried a 2nd time, still got tons of errors. Needless to say, stock 6.0 didn't boot. I decided, "The heck with it" and tried installing Lineage 7.1 again... and it worked! It finally booted up entirely. However, now I get a "Sim card missing" notification. Can I just reinstall part of something... like the modem? so I can keep this "working" lineage boot? Or am I starting over yet again?

This caused it to not boot.
I went back to 6.0 and turned off auto-updates. I'll try again sometime when I have time. I did like the custom rom a lot, just couldn't use it as a phone xD
So I have researched everywhere I can, watched videos, etc. and I cant figure this out. Wondering if I bricked my phone.
Originally my phone was stuck on the boot animation screen for Essential. For hours. So I factory reset it using the stock recovery. After that phone would boot and either get stuck on the essential Logo, or stuck on the boot animation. I reset the phone a bunch of times, and on 1 of them I was able to get to the phone set up screen which I quickly got through and made sure I was in developer mode, and had OEM unlocked turned on. While I was in the setup screen all kinds of services kept force closing, and about 30 seconds after setting up the developer stuff to unlock the bootloader the phone finally froze and went to the boot animation screen and just stayed there.
Next I unlocked the bootloader following the steps on here, then unlocked critical_processes or whatever it is called.
Next I tried to flash a stock essential rom from the roms dump page. When trying to wipe user date I get "error. Cannot generate image for userdata". I then flashed the stock rom, and restarted and experienced the same exact thing as before. Either stuck on logo screen, or stuck on boot animation....for hours.
Last I tried flashing to the stock rom recommended in the lineage OS thread, and then flashed TWRP again, and flashed Lineage, and once again I am stuck on the essential logo screen. If i go into recovery it now goes to the Lineage recovery so I am assuming the install worked.
I am completely stuck now and can not figure out what to do next, or if I am just stuck with a hard bricked phone. Any help would be appreciated.
Update: So after restarting the phone about 7-8 times I actually got Lineage OS to load up and was able to set the phone up. That lasted about 2-3 minutes before the phone froze, went back to the Lineage startup animation and then restarted. Now it won't go past the Essential logo screen.
I'm new to the PH-1. I went in circles because all I wanted was the AOSiP ROM. Then no touch, tried flashing the September "hyp" and "rpm" partitions. Didn't help... And on it went.
I finally dug out of my hole by sideloading the essential.com OTA in stock recovery.
That's what I would try if I were you. But then, I'm new to the phone [emoji23]

Sideloading it using the factory recovery is the only thing I didn’t do. Everything I flashed through fastboot. Guess I’ll try sideloading it next.

Did that work for you?
I was having these same kind of problems - all guides never said a thing about flashing unlock_critical - after I did that (and all other requirements to unlock and flash roms) then sideloaded I think it was .092 factory zip - I was able to start flashing things like old school android that I am used to. Still need to figure out why they are saying to use magisk on a boot.img and then flash manually but that may just be certain roms.
