I want to lower the resolution for better gaming (Pokemon GO) performance, and there's no such setting available in the Display settings.
I've tried the "Lower resolution" option within the Game Launcher, but it didn't help at all.
The same game runs smoothly when I run it on a 720x1080 emulator on my phone, so the spec can clearly handle it.
Any non-root method to alter resolution?
PS: Smallest width setting didn't help either.

Like in Z5 premium, do we have ability to change resolution from 2k to 1080p. Or do we need custom rom for this to happen?
What goal are you trying to achieve? The Z5 scales everything down as the 4k display would destroy the Z5 battery otherwise (or so I've heard it explained), so the UI and other interfaces are rendered down to 1080p. Pictures and videos are shown in 4k.
I ask as I am wondering if you are concerned about resolution or battery. If the latter, there are other things which are easier to change (screen brightness, background apps, etc) and will also impact battery performance more than adjusting the resolution - therefore, I would suggest looking into that before I would change resolution.
Also, to change this you would need root permissions, at least. I don't know if it is adjustable through an edit of build.prop or other config file, as DPI changes are edited this way, but might be a good place to start looking.
Well, let me clarify something for you.
Speaking about software, there is nothing unchangeable in Nexus devices You can change every bit of codes to match your own usage pattern.
To reduce resolution, at least you need root permission.

You can definitely change the resolution to 1080p! You need root + unlocked bootloader. I have to post, I am NOT responsible for bricked or busted devices.
First MAKE A BACKUP
- download a terminal emulator
- type the following (below)
- su
- wm size 1080x1920
you should see an immediate effect, everything will look bigger (except the keyboard), next is to change the DPI
- wm density [value] (I use 320 personally)
- stop && start (reboots device)
Done! You can verify the change with an app, I used "display tester". The boot animation will probably look weird, this is normal, all should be well.

Hi all i have now latest 5.1.1 Lollipop STOCK ROM + root + Xposed(unofficial) on my Galaxy s6 Duos (G9200 HK)
I used Resolution Change. Now use 720x1280 resolution (Default is 1440x2560).
But default using i think is without sense, because this resolution is good for laptops and big monitors... i on my laptop have 1280x720...
On 720x1280 you don't a major change in graphic quality. Only small insignificant changes e.g. when you click recently used apps you see they in window "BIG"
I tested more resolution smallest 180x320(for fun xD NOT RECOMENDED) but optimal is 720x1280.
Lower revolutions than 720x1280 crash touchwiz ( need to use another loader) and samsung keyboard can have problems and sometime problems with interf. sys.
Now i have between 1,4GB to 1,5GB free RAM
And without Xposed i think i can have 200MB RAM more because i use some modules and with those system use more RAM.
720x1280 = 1/4 from 1440x2560
When i enter task manager on 1440x2560 settings app use 220 RAM +/-
On 720x1280 settings app use 110 RAM +/-
More apps working like it.
The best performance is in full screen games. Phone isn't heat.
Change resolution give nice boost to Galaxy s6 but you can too use greenify and another app to boost your phone more.
When you try Resolution Change you change resolution on your risk!!!!!!!!!!
I recommended USB Debuging mode active and know how use ADB for reset resolution. Some resolution changer APPs restore resolution after short time. Such Apps i recomended when you want test resolution. When you have problems after short time resolution back to last actived and approved resolution.
For me problem with touchwiz and keyboard isn't problem what i must reset my phone to factory... but some people can have problem with that.
I believe we should leave ram management to android. Coz it knows what's best,(isn't the ram which is not occupied is wasted ram?). So I don't see why one should lower his s6's resolution unless it has a huge effect on saving battery.
What's your avg sot with that configuration?

Effect on saving battery does not come from nothing. Resolution 1/4. Your Graphics do less calculations. Your phone no heat up as normal resolution.
I don't know why apps use less RAM when resolution is lower when i tested that i wanted have smaller graphic usage lower heat phone in games and longer battery life but i tested that on settings.apk and another apps and i see effects.
I'm not specialist but i think after graphics have his work done all counted images stay in RAM and you can see RAM usage lower, because image 1440x2560 use more memory than 720x1280.
i don't know what it can work in settings.apk here isn't hard couting for gpu as 3D games...
When i changed resolution I did not expect such a decrease RAM usage.
But when someone better know why RAM usage is lower when resolution is lower can write :]

Yes but when you test lower resolution you can have problem to back to usable resolution. (Keyboard can crash)
I recommended use Program what after short time back to usable resolution or know how use ADB.
And in ADB "wm size reset" ;]

This is no Xposed module i wrote "i have xposed" because it use some my RAM.

After into the use of the tablet for about 1 week I found same pretty cool tweak. Before coming in to the topic , I'm really impressed in the device performance also the issues that others faces could be solved . First of all for those who are complaining about the lollipop about nvidia removing the power control option let me say this,its not removed just hidden??.So first step in getting max fps is to find the power control [Just do a google in how to find hidden power controlled] So after finding the power control menu move to apps in the above mentioned section in the power menu and select the required game or app tap it and make a custom setting there on your desired requirements .There you may run apps in very low resolution or in very high [Nearly 2k] depending on your requirement.

Here in power control you can set the processor clock to save power or max performance or optimum depending on your need .this will help you resolve the battery issues in lollipop .
My recommendation is to play games in lowest possible resolution in the battery saver mode. This provides you with good amount of power saving. Also don't get me wrong in asking you guys to play games in lowest setting thinking that our device is not capable,its just to save power ??

and sry if you might feel this would work, but it doesn't. many ppl already complained that the power control doesn't work in lollipop.
and about that resolution thing you mentioned. it kinda just lowers the display resolution, NOT the actual rendering resolution. so even if your game might feel snappier, its just a placebo effect afterall.

The power controll menu does work,Its is not changing the device resolution just the rendering resolution I'm saying this because just play a game in max resolution and in native one.you will find the max resolution one with some edge cutting problem... this is because of the high res texture in low display resolution. To really see the difference connect it to an fHd TV via an HDMI. Even if it is just lowering the device display still it would improve the frames by a good difference also my thread is not really about finding the power control but about how to use it....
I will be uploading visual proof of change in visual quality....

i wasn't talking about that the display resolution feature wouldn't work. i was talking about the whole power control menu itself with all its other functions. setting the cpu or the framerate did change absolutly nothing. if i change the framerate to 30 or even 25 for en example, the system would still output 60 fps (if the app/game is not too demanding in terms of performance). and about the cpu setting, guess what, this doesn't work either. if you change the clock to minimum for example, all apps/ games will still run normally like nothing was changed.
you can also check the cpu clock with any working cpu monitoring app and see that almost the whole power control menu does not work the way it should (or like it was on kitkat because that one really did work). only the display resolution thing is kind of working. but the rest of it isn't doing what its supposed to be.

Game is MC4 you can clearly see the colour difference in red
The power control works if you know what to tweak in it. There are applications that throttle if all 4 cores are used. Facebook works more stable with 2 cores and 80% frequency. You will see more opportunities if you experiment. In my observation in general, lollipop update in this device was not well thought out so Nvidia leaves the power management with you. Yeah, very irresponsible of them.
If tweaked right, performance difference of apps is night and day, no kidding. Stop arguing and finally try it, don't reason based on what you have read. This goes without saying, do not contribute if you don't have an actual unit. Thanks.
Alright, I'm reaching out to the community for help on this one. With the recent sale on Daydream VR (they're $50 from Google and Verizon right now), I have been trying to optimize my 6P with the VR set. I have tried some of the suggestions on the form, but I'm still having stuttering issues. So I had the idea about lowering the resolution. So I used the "wm size 1080x1920" trick and successfully dropped by resolution down, and adjusted the DPI accordingly. It runs well, however, when I put it in the VR set, the viewing angles are messed up. When I put the headset on, both eyes are not lined up with each other. I fiddled around with all the wm settings I could find (overscan, scaling, etc), and I can confirm that the viewing angle is messed up in the opposite direction when I set the size over 4k.
I used a Display Settings app to look at my settings, and it seems as though the device thinks the actual screen size is changing when I change the resolution, which may be why Daydream is maligning the eye points.
Is there a way to change the resolution while making the device think the screen size has stayed the same? Or is there a way to change this info just for Daydream?
If it's any encouragement, the Daydream apps ran very smoothly with one eye closed at 1080p. The Google Photos app stuttered at 4k but had no problem at 1080. So if we can figure this out, we could have a smoothly running Daydream setup.

It's just a guess, but have you tried to edit the build.prop file in order to "mess around" with declared display density over there?

Yes, I messed with any of the build.prop settings that dealt with display. I long ago gave up and now have an Axon 7. Good luck to anyone else trying it!
Hi guys,
So, it is possible to "use" 4k on a full hd tv. This is done via ADB by entering the following lines:
adb shell wm size 3840x2160
adb shell wm density 640
(the second is just twice the density of stock, 320, otherwise everything will be 4 times smaller)
Now this is FAR from perfect.
Some things don't scale well, like the android load screen and the recent apps screenshots.
But more importantly, this seems to impact performance a lot. And I would guess it impacts it more so than native 4k.
Does anybody have an idea what causes this performance drop? (However 4k video is smooth, even at 60hz)
I must assume that normally some settings would adjust automatically when you use a native 4k screen, so that performance is optimized. Does anyone have an idea as to what settings are involved?
Setting the CPU governor to performance helps some. But it seems to be more like a memory issue, where maybe the memory is at lower clock speeds? Or the cache is lower?
I'm rooted.
And as to why I did this, well it looks better and you can select 4k in youtube for example.
