EMobile Nexus 5 Sim Data Connection - JAPAN

Hopefully this thread may help a lot of others out there and save all some time. Here in Japan the carrier staff are notoriously useless when it comes to technical help. Even the technical staff.
So bought a new unlocked Nexus 5 from EMobile Japan with a 4G-S sim piggy-backing the Softbank network. Staff stated the sim should work in any unlocked phone (now stating he said it would not lock, but says it is not IMEI specific). Anyway here's the deal when using the sim in a Docomo unlocked Samsung Note 3
* Voice calls okay
* DATA does not work.
* Have tried many different APNS including those below, but no joy.
* The Nexus 5 itself can use any sim.
Can anyone shed any light on the above? Have tried to speak to EMobile technical support but they were no help. Here are some links in Japanese on the subject.

I have some questions:
- Is the Docomo Phone unlocked?
- Did you try the Emobile Sim on another International LTE phone (other than iPhone)?

Hi fake guy. No positive updates. Just some clarification. EMobile Japan uses a type of device filtering (like IMEI filtering) that allows their SIM only to work in devices with certain spec. I.e. Nexus 5 and their Arrows phone. This means you CANNOT get data services in an UNLOCKED phone like my unlocked Docomo Note 3 or my international HTC SV LTE.
I was told that Emobile tech have an engineering code that can remove this, but of course this would never be publicised.
Why they choose to do this when their target users are business people, early adopters and foreigners who want flexibility, and the fact they are losing the tiny market share they.

same here - no ability to connect to data network using emobile 4G-S sim into simfree Xperia Z2....Anyone has an idea as to what is the filter/lock used by Emobile (phone model type etc...) or found a way around it ?

I don't have a huge amount of experience trying to use eMobile phone SIM cards for data, but I can tell you that SIM cards sold for an eMobile feature flip phone work in the Sony Mini Smart Phone that eMobile was selling just fine.
Also, I took a data only SIM for a GL06P and put it in a NEC Aterm router and it works just fine.
In my experience they don'T filter by phone IMEI or anything like that, it's just that they use band 9, which isn't supported by a lot of hardware. For example, I have an unlocked DoCoMo Xperia Z1 and it works with other SIM cards fine, but it doesn't work with eMobile just because of the frequency support.

That may be another possibility, but I visited my EMobile, sorry Y!Mobile (rolling my eyes ) shop last week, and they said a customer reported success in getting data with the Nexus 5 sim in different handsets. Coincidence as I just had a feeling to check about that time , and sure enough the Japanese blog had updated with this info. They report intermittent success.

Hi, sold my nexus 5 so my experience stops with above post. When I leave Japan will be happy to return to mobile freedom. None of this nonsense.

Nexus 6P in Shanghai

It's early but I'm possibly relocating to Shanghai and currently have an AT&T phone I'm considering picking up at 6P but not sure my options in regards to sim cards and such over seas and there's no better place to ask than XDA. Thank you in advance for helping!

Hey, in case you still need info: I read that Huawei partnered with AT&T and China Telecom on the 6P, but you might want to double-check if there were separate releases. China Mobile and China Telecom often use a China-developed variant of network standards. In my case, I got China Mobile SIMs that stranded me on only EDGE networks, on my Nexus 7 2013 (LTE) tablet and an older Motorola Defy+ (3G/HSDPA). China Telecom even told me to go to China Unicom. You'll find most foreigners using China Unicom, partly because you can use your imported mobile no problem.
That said, if you buy a 6P in the Huawei store, or directly at one of the service providers, you'll of course have no problem.

I'm editing this to put the important thing I wrote at the top as well:
go to willmyphonework.net and select all types of nexus 6P (only 2 types) and all types of networks (only three types). You will see what sort of network coverage you get - I love that site so much.
I am by no means an expert in this area.
But I am using the 6P in Beijing and I am quite happy with my choice. However, I don't find visiting Phone stores etc easy - perhaps Shanghai will have more access to English speakers than Beijing... I have heard that some of my colleagues (non-tech) are now finding success with Xiaomi, one plus, and Huawei directly putting google services on their phones. I still end up assisting most who can't afford the iphone option and need google flashed onto their android devices.
2 things I have noted.
1. I was warned about it prior to buying, but did not fully understand. You need to follow a couple of processes to remove the problematic exclamation mark/wifi issue. You will have wifi, but it will be annoying each time to manually enter new networks each time until you do this.
2. If you root and flash new ROMS - unless you have internet access that has been redirected or vpn'ed (I don't know correct terminology, sorry) at the router level, you'll get stuck at the scanning for networks stage of device setup. You can't skip the network set up either. You just stare at a 'this will take 2 minutes' for eternity.... The fix is to find a network - like starbucks or some other western type of router set up. Then it allows you to skip the network initial set up.
I don't use China unicom, but that's because when I arrived in China 6 years ago, they sucked in terms of phone coverage. They are much better now apparently, but I have my china mobile number, and I don't really feel the need to change my set up.
If you have any worries about your phone working and which network to use, go to willmyphonework.net and select all types of nexus 6P (only 2 types) and all types of networks (only three types). You will see what sort of network coverage you get - I love that site so much.

You will not get China Mobile and China Unicom LTE access with the US variant of N6P because of the lack of bands. With the international variant I have, you are free to roam the country and nearly all bands are covered. Sadly, no mainland China store will sell the N6P, unless you're willing to go to the chaotic imported phone market and seek for one - it's recommended that you get it through your US importers.
And yes, like said above, you need to root and do some (easy) steps to prevent the WiFi exclamation mark from showing up, otherwise your phone will refuse to automatically connect to WiFi even if the hotspot does have internet access.

USF guy, as for buying from taobao (online store) or markets, it might be fraught with difficulty for non-Chinese. My suggestion is to buy from as official as you can. Buy in HK is a good option.
The reason is because you just don't know what your getting from online sellers. For example, on my last travel to Guanzhou, I stumbled accross a phone market that was six blocks wide and long and sold every imaginable mobile phone internal and external. I very much doubt it is the only market of its kind in guangzhou and China. Simply, I don't think it would be too difficult to buy and make and sell counterfeit devices - and honestly, you might find it best to just pay the extra 400 rmb that gives you peace of mind.

You're very right about that kind of market - they might not sell fake devices these days, but the source and originality (i.e. not disassembled or no replaced parts) are questionable at best.
However, buying from HK will give you a charger that's unusable in mainland unless you purchase an adaptor separately. The only genuine option is from Taiwan, where an int'l variant is sold with mainland-compatible charger. If @USFguy is willing to arrange a trip there this would be a feasible solution. If not, then the only partially reliable one is to try and find one through US importers - at least they're more reliable than Taobao.
P.S. My own Taiwan N6P is bought on Taobao. There are many trusted importers out there, and for a device this new and this unpopular in China, there's no motivation for counterfeit.

Well, not exactly. There is one band working.
Tried Project Fi (using China Unicom) and China Mobile, most times you can still get LTE outside, otherwise, Edge you know.

I was in Shanghai last Christmas and purchased a pre-paid SIM card from China Mobile, it works fine. I also tested UniCom or China Telecom using my friends' sim card, Nexus 6P works fine with all of them: 4G LTE.

Huawei Mate 9 Pro Dual SIM

I am looking for a good quality Dual SIM mobile so I would like to ask you about couple of thinks:
1. Does the Second SIM can work with 3G instead like P9 Plus only 2G only? I know data can be only from one SIM but calls from two. Here in AU there is no 2G

On a recent trip to Taipei, my AT&T global roaming SIM was my primary (4G on Chunghwa network) while my China Mobile SIM was secondary/phone only (3G on 大哥大 network). So, I believe the phone only secondary SIM is capable of more than just 2G.
However, this looks to be network dependant as when in China and the AT&T SIM is my main driver, the China Telecom SIM stays on 2G.

Thanks for info. I have confirmation from dealer that SIM2 can work on 2G/3G but I am confused because in user manual there is information that second SIM can work only on 2G'.

very happy with my mate9 pro - dual sim. LON-L29C636 working great on AT&T in the USA. Only one sim (you can select between SIM1 and SIM2) is for data. I was in the middle east and asia the last few weeks and dual sims worked great (I have AT&T and Singapore (Starhub) SIM's in my phone). This was my note 7 replacement and I've been very happy with it. Amazing battery life and supercharging is fast (but you have to use their dedicated charger/cable or you just get regular charge speeds). i bought mine off ebay (it's a UAE model) and had no problems.

Import a dual sim variant to UK?

Hi,
There are lots of dual sim models on eBay. Not clear which country they are sourced from but they *seem* to support U.K. LTE bands?
Any issues with importing? Not worried about tax etc I am referring to the software experience. I assume it's in English with google play store etc? Anything to worry about?

Hey Neil.
Most of the dual sim ones would be from either Taiwan or Hong Kong, and should carry the model number of U-1u. They shouldnt be any different from your local UK model, bar the exception of:
1. Warranty - You would not receive support locally from UK based retailers or HTC without additional cost.
2. VoLTE / VoWiFi or other carrier dependent features - Specific features such as VoLTE or VoWifi would require a handset running firmware that has been customised by a local carrier. If you're using a carrier that isnt carrying the U Ultra, then there wouldnt be a difference here. You will still be able to access LTE (via the correct APN setting) and make phone calls via 3G, as per 95% of phones out there.

Questions Re: International (or Latin) unlocked S10+ or Note10+ / T-Mobile

So I am looking to buy an international (or Latin) version of either the S10+ or the Note 10+.
I am on T-Mobile in the U.S.
1. How "bad" will it be if the phone has 3 out of T-Mobile's main bands? It only lacks 71, so what's the impact will be if I don't have band 71 on this phone with T-Mobile?
2. I read in the forum about flashing T-Mobile firmware on unlocked phones. How necessary is it? I prefer not to mess with flashing anything; done it in the past, I am not 'afraid' of it, but I just don't feel like going that route. Will I be missing anything from the T-Mobile network and services if I keep the phone in its stock ROM?
For example: Wifi Calling (important to me), VoLTE, etc. Will I have access to these features if I don't flash the carrier's firmware?

Band 71 is used only in rural areas where cell towers are very far apart . My phones have never used band 71. If you don't know what bands your phone typically is using you can download a free signal app from the Play Store that will show what band your phone is connected to. Unless you live in a very rural area or frequently find yourself in rural areas it's unlikely you need band 71.
Flashing T-Mobile firmware shouldn't be necessary. I don't have the international S10+ but rather the US unlocked model and I get both WiFi Calling and Volte fine without T-Mobile firmware.
I've used many different models of international unlocked phones from Xiaomi and Huawei on T-Mobile and always got both WiFi Calling and Volte to work with only one exception--the Mate 20 Pro. I had to get rid of that phone even though I really liked it because calls kept going to voicemail without the phone ever ringing first.
It turns out that on T-Mobile if your phone supports band 12 it also needs to support Volte or calls go straight to voicemail without ringing if the caller is using Volte . I never had that problem previously because in 5 years of using international unlocked phones the M20P was the first where Volte didn't work on T-Mobile.
There were lots of posts from T-Mobile customers in the XDA M20P threads about calls going straight to voicemail. I haven't read a single post about that issue with the S10+ so it's pretty safe to assume that the international S10+ works fine with Volte on T-Mobile.
Until the S8 Samsung didn't even sell a US unlocked model--everyone in the US with unlocked Samsung phones were using the international models with the Exynos chip and those phones always worked perfectly with T-Mobile which is very BYOP friendly (unlike AT&T).
The only thing you would be missing on the vanilla Samsung firmware is Visual Voicemail but last I checked you could just download the official T-Mobile Visual Voicemail app from the Play Store.
You would also receive your OTA updates from Samsung rather than T-Mobile but that's actually a plus because the unlocked Exynos models receive updates much more quickly than all of the US models including the unlocked Snapdragon models.

If the international model didn't support Volte on T-Mobile there would be posts on XDA complaining about calls going straight to voicemail without the phone ringing. There were multiple threads about that issue in the M20P section but I haven't seen a single complaint about that happening with the S10+.
This phone has been out since early Spring so if there was a problem using the international model with T-Mobile somebody would have reported it by now.
I don’t know anything about video calling though because I use T-Mobile's network via an MVNO and my carrier doesn't offer video calling.

That's odd. I'm using a mate 20X and the although it lacks bands 66 and 71 I don't get calls going to voicemail. In fact when viewing my historical phone signal via gsam app, it shows that I always receive a better signal than even the S10+ that I'm currently using. Both devices on T-Mobile USA.

I have the Hong Kong variant SM-G975 with T-Mobile. No issues with bands, VoLTE. Wifi Calling or 4G, no impact. You won't need to flash the device.

I use Skype for Video Calling, it works fine. Mine is an SM-G9750, the best price I've seen is on Ebay. The only issue is when you first get the device you'll need to change the language since it's setup in Mandarin. A bit challenging but not a big deal. The Ebay vendor is in Houston which is where the device ships from, only takes a few days.

I must the F model. I travel to Israel with a local SIM and they use the F model, and it's the only possibility I have to use their WiFi calling while there. I am not 100% sure it'll work because of firmware but better chances with F model.

Not having bands 66 & 71 don't cause the problem with T-Mobile calls going straight to voicemail--if band 12 is supported on a phone T-Mobile assumes the phone also supports Volte and if it doesn't then you get calls going straight to voicemail.
I'm not familiar with the Mate 20X but before the M20P I had a P20 Pro, Mate 10 Pro and P10 Pro and none of those phones had an issue because T-Mobile Volte worked with all of them.
It's also possible the problem with the P20 Pro was fixed after I got rid of the phone since it was a firmware issue that was fixable in a software update . I kept mine for 6 months before throwing in the towel. The only workaround was to turn off 4G in the network settings. With 4G off you would receive all calls since Volte is a 4G function.
I personally love Huawei phones. Hopefully after Trump is gone all of the nonsense with Huawei being barred from using Google apps and bullied out of the US market will go away but they might decide selling their products here isn't worth the aggravation.
I've also used a bunch of unlocked Xiaomi phones on T-Mobile with no issues. A nice feature in MIUI is that if Volte doesn't work out of the box there's a dial code you can enter to manually enable it.
Band 66 is an offload for band 4 when band 4 traffic is high but if a phone doesn't have band 66 it just stays on 4 so not having 66 on an unlocked phone has never caused any problems for me.
Band 71 is only live in parts of the country and is relatively new. It can transmit a signal over unusually long distances and is used to provide cell coverage in rural areas where it would cost too much to build a full network of cell towers.

Band 66 is an offload for band 4 when band 4 traffic is high but if a phone doesn't have band 66 it just stays on 4 so not having 66 on an unlocked phone has never caused any problems for me.
Band 71 is only live in parts of the country and is relatively new. It can transmit a signal over unusually long distances and is used to provide cell coverage in rural areas where it would cost too much to build a full network of cell towers.

P20 pro was certified and worked fully on T-Mobile , most devices after that were not.
I don't think my mate 20x connected to band 12, but if it did, then yes it'll probably go straight to voicemail.

The SM-G975F is the Exynos SoC variant for Europe. The SM-G9750 has the Snapdragon SoC and dual SIM's as well. Wifi Calling will work on both devices in any region, including Israel as long as the service provider offers it. The only thing I would recommend is you do some research on Exynos vs Snapdragon SoC's in the S10. Good luck!

I am aware of the differences between the two chips.
In regards to WiFi Calling - I am a bit skeptical. This provider does have WiFi calling services, however they have a list of devices that are supported. Clearly they list devices and firmwares that they sell, not BYOD phones, and they sell the F version. I currently use ZTE Axon 7, I have WiFi calling on T-Mobile but it does not work on the Israeli network and when I try to 'register' it for this service through their app, it clearly says that the device is not supported.
That being said - I can't tell you if my phone doesn't work on their WF calling because it's not even sold in Israel. It could very well be that any version of Galaxy S10+ will be supported regardless of firmware. simply because it is sold there. Clearly there is no way to know this beforehand. I asked them, they of course can only guarantee phones that are sold by them and are on the list.
BTW - the Israeli version of the 975F is single SIM, they don't have the D/S, although I can't imagine this should have any impact of phone supporting or not supporting WF calling.
What's the difference between the F and the O, other than the region they are sold in?

Devices don't need to be certified by T-Mobile to work with Volte. All of my recent Xiaomi phones worked with Volte--none of the models were officially sold in the US or certified by T-Mobile. The P20 Pro was not sold in the US so there was zero reason for it to be certified by T-Mobile. The last Huawei phone officially sold here was the Mate 10 Pro. AT&T and Verizon require that devices be certified by them to work with Volte on their networks but T-Mobile does not. T-Mobile is very BYOP friendly.

Thanks for the clarification. So why is it then that same device , but using different sim card would show the Volte toggle or hide it from the user menu? Example, mate 20 does have Volte capabilities yet its missing the Volte toggle switch. I know on the Xioami devices one can enter a #*code to force it show that option. I think what makes it even more convulsing is that Huawei global versions have various region firmware via their Cust codes. Each one I noticed behaves slighly different using same T-Mobile SIM card. You mentioned all calls went to VM on up 20pro, why do you think that was the case, you mentioned earlier that you thought possibly it may have been firmware related amongst other things.

You're correct regarding Single SIM for the SM-G975F, the Dual SIM option is available in the SM-G975F/DS. I personally wouldn't consider obtaining a device in Israel if the majority of the time I'm the US. The major differences are SoC's, a minor difference in CPU Clock Speed and Cores. The SM-G975F has no FM Radio and offers fewer Primary Network capabilities. You can view a back-to-back comparison here.

For me it's the obvious choice if I were faced with your considerations.

You see, your definition of "worst case not having Wifi calling" is important to me , simply because where I usually stay in Israel there is almost no reception at all (inside the house I am staying in), that's the main reason I want a device that will be able to use their Wifi calling.
Also, I looked at the eBay seller that you mention and I don't even think he carries the O model any more, all I see is the F model, unless of course I am missing something.

SoC is System on Chip, same as Chipset. If Wifi calling is a top priority buy the Exynos device to be certain but be advised there are numerous concerns over the chipset on XDA and other sites, plus Network Aggrigaton for Exynos in the US has issues with some T-Mobile clients. You may lose Wifi Calling or VoLTE in the US.
