I use the samsung messaging app.
I accidentally changed it's settings to 'chat' default.
What is the specific difference/use of this setting?

Is there any way to have group SMS? I miss it from. My n4 and sgs 3. I've tried a couple 3rd party apps but nothing is consistent. I've tried texty, chompsms, handcent, gosms pro, and a couple others. Even the port of the cm10.2 messenger from the play store. Any ideas? Otherwise I love the phone
.
I use GO SMS. You just have to enable Group SMS under the settings. (Settings -> Send&Receive Settings -> Enable the "MMS Group Chat" option
I just integrated my Sprint number with Google Voice hoping that I would be able to text from Galaxy S4, Nexus 7, or Chrome extension. This seemed to work, but I would get duplicate threads from the same person. I read where showing "SMS & voicemail in Hangouts" with Sprint integration will cause problems (https://support.google.com/voice/answer/6023920?p=voice_sms&rd=1). When I turn that off my duplication problem seems to go away. This puts my texting back to the way it was before integration (buys me nothing). I am not really interested in any of the Google Voice functionality. I would like to receive SMS/MMS from all my platforms and thought integration would provide this. Can this be accomplished and I am missing something? Running Galaxy S4 with SACS-NG2 at the moment, but also run CM11-M9.
my wife runs integrated gVoice on a S4 mini with no problems. She uses Hangouts for everything.
Never had a duplication issue.
Did you make hangouts your default messaging app? If not, this could be the cause of your duplicate messages.

Hangouts is my default messaging app. Duplication is related to "SMS & voicemail in Hangouts", but without that can't send/receive texts from my tablet.

Does she have "SMS & voicemail in Hangouts" checked?

Disable Hangouts and go to whatever app you were using for messaging. Enable that app and uncheck notifications in its settings. Reenable Hangouts. I have noticed for some reason when Hangouts is enabled it does not disable notifications from other messaging apps. You have to enable the old app to disable notifications and then go back to Hangouts and enable it.

It's not a notification problem. The texts are duplicated or the sender will be duplicated with one message blank.
I just bought a Galaxy S6 Edge+ on AT&T 32 gb, and I'd like to use Google Voice. I can set the default sms sending app to Google Voice after clearing the SMS default from the Messaging app, but after a few hours, it seems to reset. Is there any way to lock the default settings so they cannot be changed automatically? That it has to ask if I want it to change and I can refuse a change permanently if I decide I want to?

If it helps, I think I figured out what the problem is. There's a secondary default for the SMS app, for whatever reason it's under Connections > More Connection Settings. Is there a way to manually add an app to this setting's list? Or disable this setting entirely? Either this, or can I get an SMS app that won't automatically or repeatedly take defaults and permissions that I don't want it to? Basically, the endgame here is an SMS app that can receive my carrier's messages, but won't take the SMS default send permissions away from the Google Voice app. And I do not want to use Hangouts.
I use a third party messaging app called "textra" but when I text another android user on AT&T his messages only show up in the stock messaging app. How do I fix it?

I love Textra for messaging! Have you tried re-syncing the messages again in Textra? In Textra go to Settings, About, and click on Resync Textra.
I usually do that after I restore my messages using Titanium. Some will show up and others wont. The Resync option fixes the messages right up for me.
Hey everyone! I noticed that changing the Samsung's default messaging app to Android Messages inhibits Chat Feature of the app, therefore RCS wouldn't be available. Is there any work around with this kind of situation? I hate Samsung Messages!
