data encrypted and fastboot not working(pixel experience) - Xiaomi Redmi Note 7 Questions & Answers

Hey guys, I flashed Orange fox and installed pixel experience, after setting my fingerprints I found that my phone is encrypted.
When I try to update my system to latest pixel experience, Orange fox is asking me for a password.
To upgrade my system, I downloaded the newer rom and try to install it via fastboot.
When I reboot to fastboot and type "fastboot devices", it first shows my device correctly, but when using the commands again, it gives me a bunch of question marks. After the third time I use this command, it did not print anything. I tried three cable and 5 ports over 2 PC, getting the same result.
So I changed my plan to flash MIUI first, but the miflash tools also cannot recognize my device, what should I do?

Custom ROM are not designed to be flashed in fastboot mode. Your best bet is now try to flash MIUI again using MiFlash (fastboot ROM). If it doesn't work, you will have to take it to a service center.
Btw, update OrangeFox to latest version and please disable secure startup when setting up your phone to avoid having to do all of this again.

Mi A1 not recognized in Fastboot(?!)

I *just bought Mi A1, and I want the Night Light feature. And the blue accents (I love it).
I enabled OEM unlocking, enabled USB debugging. adb recognized my phone, and I rebooted it to bootloader (fastboot).
HOWEVER, fastboot devices brought up no devices - the phone is not being recognized.
I used the AIO tool here, and I'm getting the same results. Interestingly, when I reboot to the bootloader, the phone switches off after 30 seconds or so, and instead starts charging (cuz it's connected to my laptop) but it stays in fastboot if I use Vol - and power button.
I could be missing USB drivers, I supposed. I had installed drivers from the AIO tool, am I missing something?
Help appreciated, thanks!
If phone switches off/reboots in fastboot mode, it usually means that drivers are installed incorrectly. Find phone in device manager and install drivers manually from there.

Thanks! Where can I download the drivers? Through Windows update itself or from any other source?

For example here and just follow the video guide in the post for both ADB and Fastboot drivers installation.
With your phone in fastboot mode, look in device manager, there is probably a device that does not have drivers. If you have already installed them, you can try having Windows search for them. Then you would validate by doing a fastboot devices command from command prompt.
I have managed to get it working, I've flashed TWRP, however it goes into a bootloop with linux penguin, then a white background with Google colors and an open lock at the bottom, reading "Unlocked".
Strangely, if I flash TWRP with the AIO tool, the phone boots into system rather than loading into TWRP ?
Any reason for the peculiarity!?
Also, I can't reboot the phone.
And for some reason, my phone is encrypted!
Don't flash TWRP, just boot into it when you need it. From what I read you can't have TWRP + Magisk installed at the same time, so IMHO it's not worth the effort. Personally I use TWRP only to install Magisk..
Why do you want to keep phone decrypted? There is zero performance hit with encryption and it's, well, more secure

Oohh.. okay. Right now I'm downloading the Dec. update. I'll flash that with MiFlash tool (saving the user data) and then install Magisk with TWRP.
Before that, should I try flashing stock recovery?

Well... I thought that the encryption is preventing my phone from booting. Strangely, flashing TWRP 3.2 using the AIO boots my phone to system, so at least I can use my phone.

ALSO, do I have to install magisk on both the slots?
I suppose that you want to root your system in the easiest possible way, I'd suggest:
1. flash December fastboot ROM (MiFlash or via fastboot directly, keep user data). This will flash full December ROM to BOTH slots and set slot A as active. At this point you have fully stock device.
2. unlock bootloader
3. fastboot into TWRP
4. flash Magisk
That's it. Magisk will be installed only into the active slot A. There is probably no reason to install it also in slot B. If you want to return to stock, it is enough to restore boot.img, either from Magisk app directly, or via fastboot.

So, I flashed the December fastboot ROM, unlocked my bootloader, booted to TWRP and installed Magisk v14 (latest). It installed without issues, but when I try to boot, it goes into a boot loop.
Also, when I boot using TWRP (no modifications) my hotspot doesn't seem to work, I have to restart my phone to fix it.
Well, I guess I'll try it once more...
Damn, it worked! Magisk installed and phone boots well. The phone gives a warning before booting, that it can't be checked for corruption (probably because of the unlocking I guess).
Now, onto installing the Magisk module which gives me to use GCAM (HAL3) and nightlight.
Just a note, Magisk v14 doesn't work well with dual partitions, this might explain strange behavior. Use official Magisk beta v 14.4 or 14.5.

I'm a noob but a respectful one. I'm embarrassed to have to post in this forum asking for help on what should be such a simple problem but I'm three days and 500 google searches closer to insanity.
I just want to install TWRP on my Essential Android which I bought from Best Buy but activated on T-Mobile.:
Product - Mata
Variant - Openus
Bootloader Version - mata-84f7cce
Baseband Version - 2.0.c4.M2.0.3
Secure Boot - yes
Device State - unlocked
I've installed ADB and fastboot on my computer and made it system wide using the PATH variable in Windows 10 Pro System Properties "Environment Variables"
I have all the proper Windows usb drivers from the Essential website and I have activated Developer Options, OEM unlocking and USB Debugging on my phone. I've removed the pin so the device doesn't lock.
I'm using the original USB C cable from Essential plugged directly into my new HP all n one USB C slot.
I've copied the twrp image and pasted it into C:\ADB\ along with my minimum adb\fastboot install. I then opened a powershell there. Both the "adb devices" and "fastboot devices" commands show my phone is being recognized and that I am indeed in FastBoot Mode.
I originally left the twrp image name as downloaded: "twrp-mata_2" but when "fastboot flash recovery C:\ADB\twrp-mata_2" resulted in "error: cannot load 'C:\ADB\recovery.img': No such file or directory"
I renamed it and ran the command:
"fastboot flash recovery C:\ADB\recovery.img"
Same error.
Please help
There is no recovery partition on the device.
To flash TWRP, you'll need to fastboot flash boot, then boot to recovery from fastboot on your device. Once in TWRP, you'll need to flash a boot image before restart. TWRP isn't persistent, so you'll have to do this every time.
Unless you're looking for a custom ROM, the easiest way to root is just to patch a stock boot image with magisk and flash it from fastboot.

You should try using a Type-C to USB cable, I ran into the same issue trying to flash mine using supplied cable, once I tried the USB to Type-C it worked. :good:

@barteringram is right, no recovery partition.
Your command needed is this.
Fastboot flash boot whateveryounamedtwrp.img.
fastboot flash boot_a/boot_b yourTWRP.img
The above command worked for me. Use boot_a or boot_b depending on what you have. In addition use a separate type C cable to your PC instead of stock type C cable and remove all USB accessories plugged in the PC. I know its crazy but working with this phone may require you to do some unexplainable stuff.

I am semi new to this community, so I am unsure if it's doing this because I am rooted or not but I've got twrp permanently installed... So from my understanding Slot a can hold your os and slot b basically hold your twrp you just need to remember when you need to switch back.... How I installed was fast booted twrp to slot a, then in twrc switched to slot b to install rom, then switch back to slot a and did a reboot to recovery... Boots into twrp, I switched back to slot b to flash gapps, then restart system... Once inside os and everything is set up if you are rooting reboot to bootloader and flash the patched boot. Img with fastboot on pc... Then reboot system... Now when you want to use twrp all you have to do is reboot bootloader, fastboot to switch to slot a, and then boot recovery... Then Twrp will load then switch to slot b and you are good to go!

Thank you in advance for answering about three questions as of yet forthcoming... done this b4? lol
BTW, yes, I intend to install magisk, root and AOSip 8.1.
Anyway, I got past the original problem, kinda.
My problem arose from having too many adb installations in too many places on my windows machine.
I deleted everything, installed a single instance, put everything in a single folder on my desktop, opened a windows powershell there and then adb/powershell was able to find the twrp file.
Next problem was a "no such partition" error which was solved by a google search and specifying the slot location in the flash command.
NOW I have twrp recovery installed but the touchscreen doesn't work so its useless. AAAAAARRRRGHH!
Should I post a new thread or is this still OP?
I'm still in the same boat as my goal is a working TWRP recovery....
please advise

You might have just solved my newly evolved issue (got twrp installed but now touchscreen doesn't work)
Will get on it and let you know.
Quick question; What do you mean twrp is not persistent? Does that mean I have to install it and install magisk and whatever rom from twrp on the first shot before rebooting? At what point does twrp disappear?
What other pitfall, tips or tricks should I be aware of?

Unable to install TWRP recovery on Zenfone Max Pro M1

Hi all,
I have this X00TD model, and I recently updated firmware to WW-16.2017.2002.061. The phone has Android recovery, and I want to install Lineage OS. Whenever I try to install Lineage, I get the error 21 "signature verification failed". I read somewhere that I can disable the signature check in TWRP. But TWRP fails to install, whatever I try. I tried 3 different unofficial versions of TWRP (as my phone model has no official version of TWRP) and in fastboot, when I give the command "sudo fastboot flash recovery <filename>.img", nothing happens, and the process just freezes, and I need to kill the terminal to end the process. I have Ubuntu 18.04 installed. ADB and fastboot seem ok. When I type "sudo fastboot devices", my phone entry comes up. Any help would be welcome. I don't have windows os.
Thanks.

If you can't install TWRP on pie, try reverting to Oreo with AFT and then flash TWRP in fastboot. Also make sure you have unlocked the bootloader whether by the official tool or the unofficial method. THIS WILL DELETE ALL DATA SO BACK UP.
Thanks arko. Is there Asus Flash Tool available for Linux also? Will try and revert. Thanks :svetius
Tried reverting to Oreo with AFT, doesn't work. I installed windows 10, but fastboot doesn't work.
#fastboot devices gives me no output. I have the Oreo zip file, any alternate way I can install it? As you mentioned, there seems to be an issue with the pie ROM on my phone. Any way I can downgrade to Oreo using windows/Linux?

Windows 10 ? Its bcuz Driver Signature Enforcement
Disable it and reinstall adb and fastboot drivers, it will work for sure.
Windows driver security wouldn't accept drivers without proper Signatures,so like i said, just disable it and you are good to go.

Tried steps you mentioned, doesn't work. In fastboot mode, #fastboot devices gives me no output. Looks like my pie ROM is buggy. Basically, I need to install lineage on the phone.
Hi all,
Finally got everything done in about 5 mins I booted up Ubuntu Mate (32 bit) on my other laptop, and found I'd already installed adb and fastboot on it from the repositories (not from google). I booted my phone in fastboot mode, and tried the #fastboot devices command, and voila, my phone got detected! After that, it was a matter of a few minutes, following the installation instructions (of twrp and lineage) from the lineage website. Thanks for all your inputs and help
P.S: I realised (again), after more than 2 decades, that windoze mighty sucks lol.

Soft bricked phone: looking for advice

Hi
I would like to ask for some advice.
I've recently soft bricked my MI2S. I can boot to recovery (TWRP 2.8.1) and fastboot. The phone isn't recognised by Windows or Ubuntu, so I can't flash anything with fastboot. Actually, fastboot, adb or MiFlash don't detect the phone. I've tried to use a USB stick with an OTG cable, but TWRP doesn't detect the USB stick. If I boot to system, it stays on the MI logo (I can wait a full night, it won't change).
My question is, do I have a problem with my USB port? I'm equipped to solder a new one, if necessary. Or is my connection problem due to another reason? I wouldn't want to go through soldering if it is for nothing. Especially, when I started to mess up with the phone, it was locked with a different MI account (it was my wife's account, but it took me a few days to connect the dots together), and I couldn't connect with MiFlash, adb or fastboot either.
The steps I did to get it soft bricked:
Flashed TWRP 2.8.1 with fastboot
Rebooted to recovery
Rebooted to MIUI (a few times)
Attempted to flash TWRP 3.5.0 (my memory fails a bit there, I think I did it via fastboot)
The last didn't work because I'm still on TWRP 2.8.1
And I can't add any more zip file to flash via recovery, nor can I use adb sideload or flash with fastboot.
Any advice or comments are more than welcome. You may just have an idea that I didn't think of.
Regards
Matt
Quick update:
I don't know if you would agree, but I can't see my issue to be a software one (the device not being recognised)
I've ordered a USB port directly from China and I'll see if I can unbrick the phone from that point.
It's great that you can still access to recovery and fastboot.
First, I advice you to back up your data.
If you cannot use adb sideload or flash with fastboot.
Try in fastboot mode
- fastboot erase cache;
- fastboot erase system;
- fastboot erase userdata.
See if that can solve your issue.

Can't Enter Fastboot

Several months back I encountered the error "E:[liblp]Logical partition metadata has invalid geometry magic signature." when trying to apply updates. I've been unable to apply updates since that time, which has concerned me.
Yesterday I noticed the release notes for a multiple month old release of Lineage Recovery stated the "Logical partition metadata has invalid geometry magic signature." error had been fixed. It made reference to returning to stock to upgrade.
Last evening I downloaded the stock rom for this device and installed it using ODIN. All is well.
I would like to put both LineageOS and Lineage Recovery back on the device. Unfortunately, I can't enter Fastboot. When I use either the key combinations or "adb reboot bootloader" I see the text "Entering Fastboot..." on the display of the device, but nothing more. I've let the device sit for about five minutes without any change. It's definitely not in fastboot because "fastboot devices" shows nothing. "adb devices" shows the device when it's in recovery, I just can't enter fastboot.
Has anyone seen this problem? I've tried wiping cache and system using the Samsung Recovery (which overwrote LineageOS Recovery when I installed the stock rom) without any improvement.
Thanks,
Bob
I've got the same issue. Anyone can help here.?
You are NOT supposed to ever use adb reboot fastboot. EVER! Always use ODIN mode.
If I remember correctly, do Samsung devices even have fastboot?
They don't but Samsung added a what's basically a dummy version of fastboot that does nothing.
Try using the key combowith the tablet connected to your PC. That got me in recovery mode and from there you should be able to go into fastboot.
The whole point is not to use fastboot LMAO, because fastboot on modern Sammy devices is just a dummy version.
