Outdoor visibility (max brightness) - Realme X2 Real Life Review

Rate this thread to express how well you can see the Realme X2's display outdoors. In case you've been playing Minecraft for 18 months straight, you might not known how to get outside anymore. Well, find the door and walk through it. A higher rating indicates that it has very high maximum brightness and thus fantastic outdoor visibility in direct sunlight.

The worst thing the phone has

I never will play Minecraft neither other games in a phone, the brigthness is perfect.

Is it so bad the readability under the sun light?

I think this is a bug in the firmware, because it happens all the time... especially to my GF who is not technically inclined.
If the phone goes into energy saver mode (like maybe the charge goes below 20%), and you then end up outside under bright sunlight, it is completely impossible to see the screen. Maybe if you have a good memory of the exact layout of the screen, you can possibly pull down the menu and hit the button to turn off energy saver... but you also have to know that is what the problem is, and it's not obvious, especially not when you are in a rush and not really thinking about android phone troubleshooting.
What should happen is that if the light sensor detects very high brightness, energy saving mode should turn off automatically so that you can see the screen temporarily. Otherwise you might as well not even have a phone, since you can't do anything with it until you find a dark place to use it.

When you enable power saver, there's an option as 'Reduce Brightness'. Disable it and brightness should work fine.

are u crazy ? how in the hell u can have full brightness with power saving mode....

I no longer have a problem in full sun, the latest updates have brought an automatic brightness boost (at least 500 nits), it is even more visible than the xiaomi mi9t (less reflections). just think about disabling power saving mode in the battery settings

I have met a lot on this issue

Since i have realme ui, i have noticed a significant brightness boost under the sun but you have to desactivate power save mode. When it activate the brightness is at maxium (430 nits)like before update.

[FYI] Auto brightness is brighter than your highest stock setting

I noticed today when I was outside that it was hard to see my screen because I always keep it at the lowest brightness level.
I bumped it up to the max so I can see easier.
I tried out auto brightness immediately after and it was much brighter than the brightest stock setting.
TMYK
That's odd, so you're saying if you put it on the highest setting with manually configured brightness, it still won't go as high as auto brightness in a situation where its needed (like direct sunlight)?
I personally use the auto brightness anyway but that's interesting to know...

yeah i noticed that too. auto bright seems to go higher than the regular brightest setting.
If that's true, is there a way to manually increase the brightness to max?,
you know, similar to increasing the volume values?
Maybe someone can try it

yes, exactly.
the auto brightness probably kicks into outdoor visibility level.
Dose your phone say at the lowest light level. Because mine, even after I set it to the lowest level, moves to a brighter level.

Ditto, mine always finds a way to creep back up to higher brightness levels.
I think I'll just use auto from now on

I'm not real sure but the lowest manual level seems still too bright to me. I've seen lower with Auto on, but maybe its my eyes playing tricks again.
It is probably Power Savings in the Display settings that is STILL automatically dimming the display, so ot merely seems like auto brightness is brighter than manual max adjustment. Turning Power Savings off keeps the screen at 100% all the time --the browser and other apps will not dim the display anymore.

This is one thing that drives me nuts with this phone. I use the "dimmer" widget to drop the thing down to 10 brightness, but even that's way too bright and I haven't yet found an app that makes the display dimmer than 10 (I know that requires root, but none of the ones in the market seem to work with the Vibrant).

Maybe I'm missing something here, but I have power savings off and auto brightness off, and the screen still dims when I go into the browser.

Brightness at lowest level is still really bright?

I tried setting my Vibrant to the lowest possible brightness level (with auto brightness disabled, of course). It still seems very bright to me compared to the lowest level on every other phone I've used. I realize this phone has a nice screen, etc. but is there no way to make it dimmer in situations where you just don't need that bright of a display and want to save battery?
Edit: I want to clarify, I love the screen's brightness, I'm just mainly asking for battery saving purposes.
I was running a black bg for a while. It would seem to be your best option for both issues. It was said in another thread that black uses the least amount of battery.

You can get tinted screen protector....The bright vibrant screen is the best thing on this phone.

Yeah, that's not my complaint. No doubt this screen is awesome
What I mean is that I'd actually like to increase battery life further by going even dimmer, if possible.
Then a black background is a good idea, black pixels literally use no battery on an AMOLED screen because the pixels aren't on when they're black, so it's a true black. That's the wonderful thing about these screens, and why the contrast ratio is so ridiculously high. Also why the Kindle app has the color reversal option, making the background black and the text white, and a lot of the UI uses black in places I've seen stock android white or gray. I read a couple chapters of Sherlock Holmes the other day and my battery went down 2%. Awesome screen.
Also the web browser has a separate brightness setting.

**slow reader..jk
maybe one of the genius phone gods could post a mod for a supper dim night mode. hint/nudge :burning eyes:
I would have to agree even on low the brightness of the screen is very high. I didn't realize this until today my friend wouldn't believe me I had brightness on low (his Droid's screen looked like crap compared to mine ).
Thanks for the tip on the black background... I really do need to find out ways to improve battery life on this thing.
I made a similar thread a while ago. For me it's too bright in low light situations. I'd love to see a way to lower the lowest setting.
+1, i'd like to see to an option to go even dimmer.

Same here. The browser is downright blinding in low-light.
Hey I'm not the only one who thinks the phone should have much lower brightness settings. I think I've seen it dim lower than the lowest brightness, but only on auto mode and only for a short time. Or maybe not. But I'm sure it can go lower because it would be weird if it couldn't. I also much rather have dimmer colors than a black vacuous screen for battery savings.
It does go lower. Put the brightness on manual and set it to lowest possible then wait for it to timeout and go to sleep. 5 secs before it goes to sleep the screen goes dimmer. On the G1 the lowest setting was this pre-sleep brightness. On the Vibrant we can't get that level as an option. Fingers crossed a non-samsung rom like CM6 will fix this.

Good observation. Indeed hopefully its fixed in a custom ROM or even by samsung themselves (though i'm not holding my breath on that one).
Alarm Clock Plus
The "dim mode" in Alarm Clock Plus is really dim. It would be nice to have a setting that would allow me to drop the brightness down that much.
yeah, because even on low MY EYES, They BURRRN!
lol
seriously
+1 for supporting this thread!
+1 for lower brightness option.
+1 from me too. This thing lights that whole dang room when my wife is trying to sleep.
Sorry it took so long to reply to this thread. I had to go find my sunglasses.... Seriously though, I read in bed at night and yeah its way too bright.

Screen Filter

Maybe a useful post for some. I found this the other night, mainly because I was bored So if you use the app Screen Filter (which, by the way, is awesome for night time viewing in bed while the wife is asleep, you wont have to hear her say stop playing on your phone, because the screen is so bright!), but if you turn up screen filter all the way up to 100% brightness AND turn up your regular Android display setting up to 100%, you are basically getting your display level at 200%! And let me tell you...It is BRIGHT! I know this may be a useless post to most, but I found it to be actually very helpful in viewing my screen in direct sunlight, when the normal display brightness just wasn't enough.
Been using this app for months.

I am having problems enabling and disabling it consistently, but when I do enable it at 100% with my Android brightness at 100% I don't see any further brightness.
Also what is the advantage of this over the regular manual brightness?

I don't use it for brightness, I use it to dim the screen to a lower point that what you can do in the settings.
I've been using this app for a few months now. I love using it at night to watch a video in the dark, since the lowest setting for the brightness always seems to hurt my eyes in the dark.
That sounds unbelievable yet I believe it. I'd be concerned though that doing this might shorten the screen's life or damage it. As for that app it's been on my homescreen for a long time. Pretty essential.
Only problem is soft keys ofter are too bright for night veiwing

Screen Brightness

Is everyone here satisfied with the screen brightness? It looks somewhat nice when the brightness is at 100% but then that drains the battery faster.
I have never used the 100% brightness - outside I'm not using the G Pad, inside I'm somewhere near 50-65% brightness, and for night reading 10-20% brightness. About battery draining, I haven't keeping an eye on it. When the battery goes near 30%, I automatically put in on the charger (I got one sexy thin 4m. USB cable here so I can keep using the tablet anywhere in my room)

50-65% for me seems somewhat dim, almost too dim to enjoy the HD screen. Are there any additional settings other than the main brightness setting? I do not have auto brightness turned on at all
Indoors i hardly ever raise brightness over 40% i have no complaints. In fact 100% brightness is damn near blinding.

Agreed. Brightness isn't an issue. The problem is that the gamma is too high resulting in darks being too dark.

yes, I find the ugly screen (very dark) with the brightness below 60%.

No, you can change the gamma (and saturation, and brightness and stuff) in an app, someone mentioned it here on xda, but I can't remember it's name. Take a look around

I recommend using the app LUX. It does a terrific job of managing auto brightness. Way better than the built in logic. https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.vito.lux

I'm slightly ahead with this advice because I haven't even looked into rooting yet. But I can tell you if Franco kernel comes out for this baby that's what you want. It fixed the gamma settings and the color settings on my Nexus 4 completely. Made it like a brand new device with beautiful accurate colors and amazing battery life to boot. I will be keeping my eyes out for Franco kernel.

Adaptive brightness or not?

So do you guys use it? Been reading about how it may cause more battery drain. I've been using it myself but if I switch, I feel like I'd have to run a higher than normal brightness to accommodate for when I go outside. So thinking it may not even be beneficial then. So what do you use and recommend?
I don't use it because of battery hit for me. I manually raise brightness if needed outside.

Pretty noticeable difference for you?
I stopped using it a few days ago. Didn't really offer my any advantage since I have a Wear device and it was a hit & miss when I picked the device up.
