Phone not accessable after trying to install Custom Rom - Xiaomi Redmi Note 7 Questions & Answers

Hi,
so i've tried to root my phone and then to install a custom rom. the root went without any problem. After the root, i tried to install lineage OS 16.0 and followed this guide:
https://forum.xda-developers.com/redmi-note-7/development/rom-lineageos-16-0-t3923203
i downloaded the rom and gapps, put them on my root directory of my phone and then i wiped System,Cache ,Data, Internal Storage and Format Data. After wiping, the roms were gone, so i rebooted and transfered them again into the root directory. Then, i went onto installing (just like i did with magisk) but an error occurred saying:
E: String resource 'zip_compatible_err' not found. Using default value.
Zip Treble compatibility error!
Invalid zip file format!
Error installing zip file '....'
Updating partition details...
...done
Ok. So then, i tried to install another Custom Rom so i went for Oxygen OS, it actually did install but then i couldn't boot into it because it was telling me there was an 'Android System Error'. Ok, back in TWRP, i wiped everything and then i tried to install the Original ROM but i got the same error as above.
For now i tried to download the miFlasher tool but it only wants to download some driver and it literally takes forever.
Hope you can help me...

Those recoveries are old.. Use orange fox recovery 10.0-2 it will work and format data then install rom.

title?
@BlackGarnett
Thanks, that help me on a quick one!
@loseyourself
Also thank you for this advice, i'm new to rooting smartphones and install cfw since i was using iPhone for the past few years.
But now i got another new question: if i use orange fox recovery and i run a backup with it (i think there will be an option to do a backup), then i format all data and internal storage, can i still recover from the backup or will it be deleted?
thanks again!

Encrypted 9505 won't boot

Good morning XDA fellows,
I am encountering a slight issue: I have encrypted my i9505 two days ago and I went blindly into installing the latest 5.0.2 CM 12 build. I have done a wipe and went into installing from zip which booted the CM setup but stopped at the Encryption Unsuccessful message. If I reboot, it starts the CM setup and stops at the same message.
If I try to mount the sdcard ( the phone's main memory ) it gives me an error and therefore I've put all the files on an external sd ( sdcard1 ).
What is the safest thing I should do in order to avoid a hard brick? Would you recommend me to flash a stock firmware with odin via download mode? Would the encrypted volume mess with odin ?
Yours sincerely,
Hello,
if you point to use CM don't encrypt your device, at least for now. You don't need to flash with Odin now, just go in recovery and format internal memory (/data and /data/media), then flash CM zip

Hi Antares, I receive an error when I try to format anything that has to do with the internal memory: E: Error mounting /data E: Error formatting /data . The same thing applies when I want to install any zip from the internal memoryE: Can't mount /sdcard. I suspect it has something to do with the encryption. I am not interested in recovering anything because I have already backed up before copying the setup files on both the internal and the external sd ( before it crashed ).
Thank you in advance,
EDIT: I have tried to flash it with jodin3 on a Macbook Pro and it didn't end up successfully. I have flashed using Odin 3.10 and the system booted up so that I could remove the encryption. Once done, I have flashed AntaresOne's CM12 build and everything works flawlessly. Thank you for your support!

S8 TWRP Error

Hi all,
Yesterday I managed to root my phone all fine with TWRP and SuperSU. Then after incorrectly uninstalling the security log agent and getting a million errors I foolishly deleted the stock OS.
I have download the correct version for my phone and location but now TWRP fails to launch.
I get the follows errors when booting to the recovery.
Failed to mount /data (invalid argument)
Unable to recreate /data/media folder
Unable to mount storage
Unable to mount /data/media/TWRP/.twrps
I have googled a millions things and am still stuck.
Interestingly tho, If i install the Indian version of the OS, it loads and roots no problems (I'm from New Zealand).
Any help greatly appreciated.

Hi
Your internal memory now corrupt you have to format it.
Use twrp wipe option select internal memory then format to fat32 after that again do same thing. This time choose its original format type.

Hi, thanks for the fast reply.
Iv'e tried this option, I installed the Indian OS which works with TWRP, formatted the Data drive to FAT (Fat32 isn't an option) and then back to EXT4. I then used Odin to Install the carrier firmware I want to run and the same errors occurred. Could it be a problem with the actual OS?
Edit** When I install the Carrier firmware I can't get TWRP to open, these errors occur as soon as it opens, and then it crashes and reboots

Hi hi, tried that several times. Would still like to find out what is causing the issue but have now installed Nemisis and all is working perfrctly which makes me think it's the OS as opposed to my file system, considering I have installed multiple other versions and ran TWRP no problems.
Got same problem here. Installed TWRP to flash a custom rom, TWRP can't mount /data.
Google doesn't give me any solutions
This fixed it for me:
- download stock firmware from sammobile & flash with Odin
- go into stock recovery
- wipe data and cache partitions
- flash twrp using odin
After that, TWRP was able to mount /data and function normally again

How can I install Oxygen OS 5.0.1 with an unlocked bootloader?

Good day!
Our country just received the Oxygen OS 5.0.1 update.
How can I install it with an unlocked bootloader?
I was going to relock it but I found out that if I did, my data will be gone.
The only difference in the set-up of my phone from a stock OP5 is the unlocked bootloader.
Flash through stock recovery

What do you mean?
I tried to update my phone using the normal way but after downloading and tried to install it, it failed because my bootloader is unlocked.
I just made a backup of data using codeworkx recovery. Copied the backup (Along with the files on userdata I wanted to keep) to my PC.
Wiped all and formatted data. Then installed Oreo and copied back the files and data backup from the pc to the phone and restored data with codeworkx recovery again.
Then flashed magisk 15.2 and rebooted.
Everything working fine now.

I managed to flash Nougat without locking my bootloader. But I also had to Format the Data partition to make it work. I used Titanium Backup to backup the data of the Apps and Myapplist to make a list of the apps. After installing Oreo I only needed to spent 1 hour to restoring the app data.

This is what I did:
Downloaded OnePlus5Oxygen_23_OTA_028_all_1801031502_04d7cc5. zip, twrp-3.2.1-0-universal-codeworkx-cheeseburger.img and Magisk-v15.3.zip.
Rebooted to TWRP and installed the Codeworkx TWRP using the Install->Image option inside TWRP.
Rebooted to TWRP again to make sure that my TWRP was updated.
Entered WIPE from TWRP main menu and used the 'Format' option to Format the Data and typed 'Yes'
This deleted my Internal Storage so I had to backup everything beforehand.
Then used advanced wipe to wipe Cache and Dalvik.
Mounted the internal storage by using the Mount option from TWRP main menu.
I was having problem copying files to the internal storage so I rebooted TWRP and the problem was fixed.
Copied the OnePlus full update and Magisk zip file.
Installed the OnePlus full update and Wiped Cache and Dalvik and rebooted the device to make sure that the OS boots.
Then rebooted the device to fastboot to flash Codeworkx TWRP again because it was unavailable.
Booted into TWRP and flashed Magisk.
I am now on Oreo and I hate the way Ambient Display looks right now.

I honestly dont see a big difference yet, but only had it for two days. Feels a bit snappier, my signal a bit stronger, and probably an improvement with battery life. I had issues upgrading but then again I flashed the wrong version of magisk. I think the most important thing is the latest android security update.

Hey, thanks.. I will update later today. I see you provided which version of twrp (twrp-3.2.1-0-universal-codeworkx-cheeseburger.img). But what is the difference between the version you noted and the one I found (twrp-3.2.1-0-oreo-8.0-codeworkx-cheeseburger.img)
I want to make sure I have the correct version.
Thanks again

You can ask that question on the TWRP thread. May be they can answer it correctly. I guessed that twrp-3.2.1-0-universal-codeworkx-cheeseburger.img was for both Nougat and Oreo and that is why I used it. So, if you want to be sure you should ask that on a TWRP thread.

Hello, I was reviewing the process and just downloaded everything onto my computer and transferred onto my phone but have a few questions regarding some of the steps.
* Rebooted to TWRP and installed the Codeworkx TWRP using the Install->Image option inside TWRP
** Can I update TWRP via the official app and is that version of TWRP okay to use over the "twrp-3.2.1-0-universal-codeworkx-cheeseburger.img"
* Entered WIPE from TWRP main menu and used the 'Format' option to Format the Data and typed 'Yes' / This deleted my Internal Storage so I had to backup everything beforehand.
** How, what and where did you back up your data? Because later you mentioned "deleted my Internal Storage". I am guessing that because the OP5 does not have an external SD card everything is wiped and the new OS 5.0.1 needs to be saved onto a computer and then re-transferred back onto the phone. I am also guessing that the backup will need to be saved onto a computer as after wiping the phone it would also delete that file too, correct?
* Mounted the internal storage by using the Mount option from TWRP main menu.
** I am assuming that this option after the data wipe is self explanatory?
* I was having problem copying files to the internal storage so I rebooted TWRP and the problem was fixed.
** This is what makes be believe all the files should be on a computer. How did you reboot and when you did, does it go directly / back to TWRP?
* Installed the OnePlus full update and Wiped Cache and Dalvik and rebooted the device to make sure that the OS boots. / Then rebooted the device to fastboot to flash Codeworkx TWRP again because it was unavailable.
** I am guessing here that once OS v8 is installed the TWRP img is no longer on the phone. I would need to transfer the TWRP back onto the phone then re-flash? Could I just install the TWRP official app and flash that way?
Thanks

Yes I am currently rooted. Once I flash the new OS will I still have root access to use the TWRP official app? Is that why after flashing new OS you need to flash TWRP via fastboot?
What about the backing up? I also have full titanium, thanks.

I received the following tip
"Wipe data and then copy the rom full zip flash it boot it to the starting screen then boot to recovery and then flash magisk ,you will see no errors."
But this makes no sense to me.
I have formatted my phone / wiped data / have the full rom & magisk on my "/sdcard" / went to install zip via TWRP, selected the rom and received the error message.
I decided to just go and upgrade via OTA and that failed. My phone has rebooted back to stock
what am i doing wrong?

Problem, wrecked my phone (cannot flash stock nor custom ROMs)

I was trying to install a custom ROM, the first thing that should've made me stop is the fact i couldn't install TWRP and i only could boot from one specific img.
Anyways i proceeded, wiped everything, as always no backup, because YOLO, but this time TWRP didn't install the zip (zip file format error), the custom recovery i can boot from seem to be bad or something. Then i tried to install stock to get my phone to work, but it cannot install anything, /data is weirdly mounted, using the whole disk and leaving no space for other partitions.
Anyone has an idea? or do i have a brick for a phone now?

[SOLVED] Not able to flash Any ROM via TWRP

I have the MIUI v12.0.3, that's is full working, installed by Fastboot and XiaomiFlash. Then I flash the recovery TWRP mauronofrio and if I try to install any ROM what I get is a reboot into the recovery....
If I browse with the recovery into my files they are gone, in the root there are just a lot of folders with strange names like "7fdhuyfdsgu8fdhdH8fdhHBJN", inside those folder other strange folders.
The strange behaviour is that if I try to upload anything with a PC while the recovery in mounting a partition the file just won't upload, it sticks on 0%.
The only way to have a functioning OS is then use the XiaomiFlash again a flash the original latest MIUI.
This is SO WEIRD . I don't know how to do.
By now I have tried this ROMs:
- Havoc OS
- Resurrection Remix
Do you have any helps? I think is something with encryption, because when I try to save the log on the SD card with TWRP I get
E:Unable to decrypt FBE device
UPDATE:
I found this topic: https://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=80209338&postcount=2
Following what the comment says, I figured out to Boot the ROM Havoc-OS... BUT all my data are still crypted I guess...
I installed a simple file manager from the play store and what I see are all the strange folders in the root of the phone...
SOLUTION:
After following that thread, what I had to do is just use TWRP mauronofrio and Format Data (not wipe). This will erase everything and solve the crypto problem. :good:
