Android head unit (Portrait or landscape) - Android Head-Units

Hello, guys I am thinking to put tablet in to the cars radio head unit slot. I have thought of every aspect except one. I would like to put a tablet arround 10 inches and it would fit, but it would always be in portrait mode. How do you find that while using? I thought watching videos and all sort of stuff will be only middle half screen, is there an app or something that would help? Or is is better to put 8 inches tablet in landscape mode and not to worry? Thanks a lot for opinions.

landscape will be better for video, portrait will make the video smaller and its quite hard to see for the 2nd row seat to watch since the video is small.

This has been discussed already. Have a search of this forum.
Basically it's due to the difference in aspect ratio between your TV and the tablet.
Under the original firmware, when using a video app like MX Player it was possible to zoom in on the tablet and this would allow the image on the TV to zoom to the point where the black bars on the disappeared. This no longer works on either the 4.3 or 4.4.2 firmware. If you use HDMI a lot and the bars bug you, you need to roll back to the 4.2 firmware. Bear in mind you will still get the black bars on the main GUI, but not in movie players that allow zooming.
thanks for your answer
i found this im not sure if working

Good find. For my part I decided to take another route. I now use a wireless dongle and the free companion app by EZCast to stream movies to my TV which works quite well now - when streaming in EZCast mode (basically WiFi direct) there are no bars on the left and right. The screen can be turned off to save battery. You can also minimise the app while you're streaming a film to allow you to open the IMDB app for those vital 'what has she been in before' arguments with your partner . The dongle was about £30 from Amazon. It also features EZMirror which, um, mirrors the whole tablet's screen to the TV but then you're back to having bars left and right, and there's too much latency for gaming. Also, when using EZMirror, there is a pronounced slow down in the tablet whereas when using an HDMI cable there is no performance penalty at all. It's a shame that Nvidia aren't taking advantage of the latter as devices that output images to a TV via an MHL port/adapter experience a considerable performance hit as the device has to work so much harder. Another negative factor here is that the Note doesn't seem able to take a charge when connected to a USB hub via an OTG cable which also limits the usefulness of the tablet as a media device connected to a TV or monitor.
To return to the original problem, my TV has an option in the settings menu to either 'just scan' or to display 16:9. The latter removes a big chunk of the bars on the left and of the screen, but it also hides part of the top and bottom of the picture, which is OK on a movie, but less so when viewing the home screen etc.

Can you share us the photo?, I'm thinking on buying one and I want it to use for playing videos on my TV.

Do you mean EZCast information?
If so, there's lots of info on YouTube that will explain/show you how it works http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=h6_U44XUdJ0. Search for videos by EZCast themslelves - they have videos for various devices.
Bear in mind that there are two basic modes, EZCast and EzMirror. EZMirror literally mirrors everything you see on your tablet's screen (which also leads to vertical black bars on the left and right of the picture on the TV screen, just like when you use HDMI due to the differing aspect ratio of the tablet and the TV).
EZCast presents a menu on the tablet screen and then allows you to select different types of media to stream to the TV. This works well for films because it will fill the TV screen. It's less useful for streamimg music to a TV at the moment because it will only stream one song file at a time, after which you have to select another song.
If you buy one, there are different hardware versions available. Mine has 128MB of RAM. I have a feeling that those on offer that have 256MB RAM and a faster CPU will provide better streaming performance.
Hope this helps

Thanks, but I meant the vertical bands when displayed the HDMI Output on the TV

Oops, sorry. The exact size of the bands on the left and right of the TV screen will depend upon what formats the TV supports. For example one of my TVs zooms in slightly by default cropping a bit of the top and bottom of the phone or tablet's screen off (meaning you lose most of the notification bar and some of the soft keys, or whatever is at the bottom of the picture). I have another TV that allows different settings such as 'just scan' that shows all of the phone or tablet's screen. The downside of this is that on a phone/tablet with a 1280x800 resolution you have vertical black bars about an inch wide on either side of the picture on a 32" TV. I'll try and get a photo...
Unfortunately the camera on my HTC Sensation is struggling to capture the problem tonight, but here's a closeup of the right hand side of my TV with the tablet set to full screen mode, and the TV picture settings to 'just scan'. I might try and get a fuller photo the daylight tomorrow.

Always On in landscape?

So I know home screens cannot be rotated on stock launcher, but anyone able to rotate the AOD? In my car I have my mount/holder with my phone in landscape so it doesn't block too much of my head unit and my OCD is triggered looking at the AOD sideways. Also, I have the new Samsung wireless charging stand on preorder and was hoping to put the phone on it in landscape as well.
If it's not possible, not a big deal, but if I overlooked something I'd like to be able to rotate it.
I'm getting an Android Auto compatible radio in my car next week so it probably won't be an issue there as I'll have the AA screen rather than the AOD.

Mirroring phone to head unit (automation and screen orientation)

Wondeeing how I would go about getting my phone to mirror to my Android unit
Would be nice to have this automatically done when it connects to Bluetooth and then also have the orientation of the screen in landscape mode?
Any ideas?

This is exactly what I'm looking for. I am currently using a stock VW unit with work arounds to get screen mirroring. It is a bit of a cat and mouse game, with Google releasing updates that break the workarounds.
I am shopping for a double din head unit for my son (and possibly replace my own unit) that allows for screen mirrorring with touch control of the phone from the head unit screen.
There is a Chinese company Eonon that specifically advertises this feature, but the reviews aren't great.
Did you ever find a better solution for this?

Landscape view - isn't

Hi,
I got my new head unit the other day, this one;
https://www.aliexpress.com/item/1005003019883587.html?spm=a2g0s.9042311.0.0.180c4c4dRzap6R
It;s a;
MTK 8259 8-core 2.0GHz
6G+128G
Overall it seem not too bad so far, not too long, sounds ok. But it has 2 major problems to me.
1. Landscape - Isn't
Although the unit has the screen in landscape mode, the unit appears to be coded to behave like portrait. So although all look fine initially, after using it a little you begin to realise it's not. For example most apps that are orientation aware reneder themselves different. Maps, Gmail, YouTube and YouTube music all have views split left/right; map on right, info on left; song of left, play list on right and so on. But the head unit does not do this, it tries to put the content top and bottom, like using a phone in portrait. On some apps, it just makes it horrible, like maps where when you view info the map is push to a skinny little band across the top. On some apps like YouTube Music, it breaks it. becuase you loose sight of the track list!! on a phone it would be under the song, but there is no space to do this on the head unit. This applies to all apps. It seems they have just not defined the mode to be landscape.
Is this just my unit, or is the a fault on others?
Can you via an app fix this? force it to be right. There is no settings for rotate or orientable in the units limited settings. I did try some apps, but they asked me to turn auto-rotate on in settings, but this doesn't exists.
Fixing this would be a big improvement. would move it from 1/5 to a 4/5.
2. WiFi.
This is broken. My unit has GPS and 4G and thus has antenna for each. I think that although the unit has Wifi it's actaully got no antenna for it internally, so signal is all but non existent. I can connect to my phone hotspot bc the phone is 2 feet away. but if i park my car on the drive, it will not connect to my router in the garage (which has great wifi coverage). I actually need to drive car into the garage and part car 1m away to get it too work at all.
Anyone else have this?
3. Firmware.
Is there other firmware for the version I have?
Thanks.

1. Enable developer options or search in setttings( "RTL" or"LTR" ...) and check if has rtl or ltr layout by default
LTR is the standard for some eastern and asian regions
2. Try hotspot from it and see how far it broadcasts wifi(if its small then manufacturer or seller cheaped ou ton the wifi chip or coded it very crappy)
3 Firmware try research, if you cant find anything in English repeat the search translated to chinese (modern) , you'll have better chances of finding something

[ZLink] is possible to set the lanewatch (honda side camera) to be half screen or an small window in zlink?

I bought a Dasaita head unit for my car and usually all Honda cars have a lanewatch camera that is a side camera that is activated every time you turn the right turn sign. My problem is that it appears on full screen and is annoying not being able to keep watching the map. Is there any way to avoid it to be full screen? and change it to be half of screen or an small window?
