[NVidia Shield 2017 model]
After yesterday's update restart, to Android P, my unit stuck on bootloop (10+hrs).
I'm now unable to get past it, or get into bootloader (ie A+B after Plug-In & Control Buzz).
At this point, I'd like to do a Factory Reset if possible.
I have access to a computer if it'll help.
Thanks
UPDATE (10/3/19)
I worked through this Guide for the SHIELD Pro a number of times.
Couldn't get past the broken robot screen. Going to try updating my Windows Driver and try again later. Will update.
(sorry. I haven't hit my 10 post min in order to post links)
UPDATE (10/4/19)
I've got a somewhat Parallel Thread going here discussing my Troubleshooting Steps:
https://www.nvidia.com/en-us/geforce/forums/shield-tv/9/321317/bootlooped-since-android-p-adb-fastboot-questio/
Same sort of issue. I read over at geforce forum, somebody installed OK, then stuck. Somebody asked if they had SD card in, and to try to remove and restart. Sounds dodgey, as the card is formatted as part of the system configuration now.

I had a cluster of hd's connected to mine at the time ... Could be related?
I tried the suggestion, and removed my USB hub as well, and it didn't work. When I do get back in I'll have to see if doing that has trashed my system or app configuration.
However, I did discover in a thread below mention of a thread to do with the boot loader, and some instructions on his to get into it.
https://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=80234203&postcount=10
(BTW: I am using my TV internal smart TV functions and players instead at the moment , and the picture with my pushed profile looks way better than on the shield. Yet another way they let us down. This might be the last shield when it dies, and I stopped recommending it, and may start recommending not to buy. Just one update promoted issue after another going on for an extreme long time, and just poor interface and system app design, as well as disabling my track pad and no Linux support. The system is nowhere near what it could be.)
How far are you guys getting when booting up?
Mine's the multicolored android animation before it forms the word.

So you are getting into the bootloader?
Are you pressing recovery by any chance when there?

Thanks, that's one of the links I wasn't able to post initially.
I've since moved the question, including current pursuits, to the page linked under my last update above.
NVidia has kindly resolved the issue with me since.
Good luck everyone, and thanks for the assists.

I installed the Dexter 1.1 eLocity 7 mod and after it told me to reboot for it to fini my screen just flashes with the eLocity logo. I've tried the reboot hole and tried to turn it off nothing works. Did I brick it or is there a fix?
That happened to me, i think i held.down the home key during reboot? Someone smarter will help ya shortly i am sure
I hope so I've only had it for a few hours. This is my first Android device so I'm kinda lost!
I'm going to attempt to download and install the factory update and see if works until someone can tell me what went wrong with the dexter mod 1.1
Ok finally found a post about doing another another factory reset after the Dexter install. Seemed to do the trick.
Mod Install
Hi Bama_Android
I'm new to the forums here and I'm also a brand spanking new owner of a Elocity A7. I was reading your post. Can you go into detail as to what steps you took to correctly install the Dexter 1.1 mod? I have not even opened my Elocity box yet and want to update it as soon as I open it
Thanks
NVM I did what I should have done in the first place. SEARCH the forums before posting a question! I'm sorry all I was just too excited about getting my new toy.
Thanks again
I Will report back with results when I unbox my new baby
OK well I finally unboxed my Elocity a7 and applied Dexter 1.1. I like what I see so far. One thing I notice is how sensitive the screen is to touch. Is there a setting to tweak that?
Its ok that was my problem too. Now I cant get the calendar app to open!!!!
Reset the unit. Using a paper clip or similar on the back of the unit. Mine did the same thing.
The preferred to fix this is from the recovery screen. To get to the recovery screen:
Power down the unit. Completely off, not standby!
Hold the power button for a second (to start power up) and release
Press and hold the button until you see "Booting Recovery Kernal Image"
You'll see an android setup screen.
Press the "Home" key
Using the Search (up) and Back (down) keys select "wipe data/factory reset"
Use the "Settings" key to select
Go down to "Yes -- delete all user data"
Use the "Settings" key to select
Reboot
Always clear Data/Cach when updating...
Due to my own actions (idiot) I deleted the recovery partition to try to regain 9gb it took from me. I would like to reformat and start again but I cannot. I have tried the following dell advice:
these are the steps to reset your tablet:
1. If your device is not turned off already, hold the power button for 10s to power it down.
2. Once it's powered down, press the power button to turn it on.
3. When the Dell logo appears (you may have to do it as soon as the screen turns on instead of wait for the logo to appear), hold the power button again to turn it off.
4. Do this process 3-4 times (they said 4, but it was only 3 for me) until you see something at the bottom saying that it's starting automatic system repair.
5. From there, you should see a menu. Choose "Troubleshoot", and the next menu should ask if you want to reset your PC along with some other options.
6. Choose reset PC, and when you get to the two options that ask "just delete files" or "fully reset PC", choose the second option. From there you should be able to follow the instructions to setup your device.
When I get to restore it asks for system files? I have tried the Dell recovery but that fails as well.
I have made a boot disk on my USB via an OTG cable which is recognised by the tablet, but it refuses to boot from this even after setting the bias to 1st boot from the USB.
Can anyone advise me of how to solve this problem and reformat and start again.
OK here is what happened. I am running zulu99 full android os. Worked great. I downloaded an app from the Google play store to change the dpi. After I made the change to the dpi settings the app ask me to OK a reboot. Now my Shield TV Pro is stuck on a bootloop and I cant get it into hardware recovery. Any ideas on how to enter recovery another way? I tried unplugging the shield plugged the power back in . Then I hold down the power button for 3 seconds let the power button go and press it down again for a second. I tried this many times and I just end up back in bootloop. Is there any other way to get into fastboot to flash back to stock ? Or do I now have a paper weight ?
Thank you

HowTo Flash:
==========
Before flashing images from this build to your SHIELD, connect your SHIELD
via USB to the PC where you built this tree.
Next, put your SHIELD into fastboot mode using following method:
SW method:
Boot to android home screen
Connect the device to linux system
Open terminal(on linux)
Type "adb reboot bootloader" in terminal
HW method:
Disconnect power cable
Insert USB OTG cable and make sure to connect other end to a host PC
Connect power cable to SHIELD
Quickly start pressing power button for ~3 seconds
Do not hold the button and connect power supply afterwards
HDMI TV should be always connected to SHIELD
Alternative method:
Perform software shutdown on SHIELD by holding Power button for 10 seconds
Connect USB OTG cable to SHIELD
Start pressing power button for 3 seconds
HDMI TV should be always connected to SHIELD

I suggest you keep trying those methods. There's some issues with the current bootloader, so if you can't get it to work eventually you'll be stuck with having to rma it. If you get it working, I suggest you stop messing with it until after the next OTA, which is supposed to fix the bootloader issues.
Some of the issues are mentioned here, with a response from nvidia: https://forums.geforce.com/default/topic/893616/bootloader-issues
The HW method worked .
Thanks For the help !
Hello dear xda community
I have a px6 device from the company "Wondefoo" installed in my Mazda (without any hard buttons). It worked so far so good, but ZLink (Apple Carplay) didn't work, so I tried to fix this. To do that, I rooted the device, uninstalled the "ZLink" app and reinstalled a newer version. Then I tried to reboot. And then my problems started:
The device doesn't boot anymore. It tries to start up, I can see the Android 10 boot logo ("multi-media on-vehicle Navigation System" screen), but after about one minute, this logo disappears and the screen remains black.
OK, easy fix --> Just go into recovery mode and reset the device. But here's the big problem: I can't get into recovery mode.
Here's what I tried:
1. Ignition off and on --> Screen still black
2. Press "Reset" button (my device only has this one physical button) --> Boot process started again, but same outcome
3. Unmount the device, plug the power out, wait an hour, plug it in again and try again --> Boot process started again, but same outcome
4. Tried to connect with adb over Wi-Fi to the device (used the last known IP address) --> Connection timeout, Wi-Fi probably not started yet
5. Press&Hold "Reset" button until lights beign to flash to get into recovery mode --> Lights never flash because the "Reset" button somehow breaks the power circuit and when I release it, the device gets power again and boot process starts again with same outcome
6. Press&Hold "Reset" button for a minute, then release it, then press it again quickly within 1sec --> Boot process started again, same outcome
7. Tab with 5 fingers on the boot logo --> Nothing happened
8. Attached keyboard and pressed "Alt" + "PrintScreen" + "I" all the time --> Nothing happens. Keyboard is with RGB LEDs, so I saw it was active when the boot logo was displayed... Then, the LEDs on my keyboard turned off which was telling me that there is no keyboard input possible anymore
9. I even tried this: https://forum.xda-developers.com/t/new-method-enter-recovery-no-physical-buttons.4013453/ --> I just have one similar cable, not two as described in this post... So I put everything together again and just tried again --> Boot process started again, same outcome
Well... Is there any option left? I'm thinking about buying a USB male-to-male cable and try again with adb, but everyone tells me that I need to get into recovery mode first which I really can't
* Is there any other way to get into recovery mode? Maybe with my keyboard?
* Does anyone have another idea what I could try? Maybe without recovery mode?
Thanks in advance and cheers
T
As you said:
1. Ignition off and on
2.Have ready the needle for reset and do that instantly as you see the boot logo.
Once device restarted, wait until will see the boot logo again and pull out the ignition key.
3. Put in an USB socket a pen drive with the right firmware
4. Put back the ignition key and let it in ON position, without starting the engine. The update process will start, have a bit of patience until will finish. The device will restart at the end of the update, and straight after the boot logo, shortly press the reset button.
With a bit of luck, will have a fresh firmware on your device.
Thanks for your quick answer.
I tried what you said several times, but unfortunately I always end up on the black screen, no matter what I try.
My usb stick flashes quickly during the boot process, but nothing happens with it.
I also tried with an USB male-to-male cable and connect via adb, but it won‘t connect...

Are you sure you are holding the reset button for long enough?
On my machine (Dasaita) you hold the reset and the machine turns off... but you have to keep holding it even after it has turned off. Could be upwards of 1.5 minutes. Once the lights flash (and finished flashing), release and press one more time within 3 seconds.
Thank you for this idea. I have tried 30 seconds, but no more until today...
Now I tried with 1min, 2mins, even 3mins, but nothing happens.. I think the power is immediately cut as soon as I press the reset button. So there is probably no way to fix this easily
I also contacted the seller, but they have a talent to not understand my question. I just get answers like "press the reset button 2 sec and then everything is fixed" or "plug in the USB drive with the new ROM and press update" - of course that doesn't help.
Well I guess I'm left with one last thing: Throw this device away and buy a new one. Not from Wondefoo anymore of course, and hopefully with a working reset button.
I have the same issue. What did you end up doing?
Where did you buy your unit from?
So I hadn't tried to flash a ROM on my "tube" Shield TV 2019 until the Experience 9 ROMs just leaked. I didn't realize it didn't have a USB port. I have been flashing ROMs on Android phones for over a decade, so I'm good there but what about Fastboot access via network TCP/IP or UDP? I was able to ADB to the Shield with "ADB connect [IP address]" but Fastboot doesn't see the unit at the same IP and I've looked on my router's device list and don't see anything. I have the latest 1.4.3 ADB/Fastboot tools.
So no access to flashing using the SD card slot, ethernet, or network?
THANKS!

I'm sorry, this is slightly off topic, but consider it a bump. haha. A quick question. Do you have a link for the experience rom? I would love to look at it, or do you know what OS they are rolling?

Well I figured it out. First copy the downloaded image to the external sd card of the tube. Then:
When you reboot to fastboot using wifi ADB, then first unlock the bootloader.
Then choose "Boot recovery kernel" from the menu. The power button is located above the HDMI port on the tube.
When the dead android image appears, press the power button for 3 seconds and then release.
You should see the recovery menu. If you still see the dead android, then repeat the process by holding the power button pressed for 3-4-5-6 seconds. It can be tricky.
Once in the menu, choose the sd card.
Choose the file.
The process will start. and it should complete after a couple of minutes.
You are then done.
I did some extra steps:
I performed a factory reset and cleared cache from the recovery menu, although this happens automatically when you unlock the bootloader.
I then got back to the fastboot menu and locked the bootloader again. Otherwise you get a warning every time you boot the device.
Be ware that locking/unlocking the bootloader, erases the data of the user partition and the device needs to be setup as from a factory reset. This is by design.
Here is a link with all the images.
Cheers

I want to go back from Android 11 to Android 9. It is possible to download a ROM for Shield 2019 Non Pro 8GB ATV 8.2.3? THX
There are links to the recovery firmware 8.2.3 but I can't get past the agree button that shows when klicking on the link..
It could be my old laptop.. but here's the link..
Gameworks Download Center
Get the latest Gameworks software for your game development work.
developer.nvidia.com
Sinse the update most of my aps are gone or not usable..
I can not fint the shield on my network.. and there is no installable apk showing up in any file manager.
I wil do my best to get back to android 9.
Tried to go back using the 8.2.3 recovery img.. but no luck.
I get an error saying cant flash over newer firmware.
Ugg... I didn't see this post that you can't downgrade until I tried it myself and also got the error.
Anybody have any possible work around ideas?
The same here:
The method I used is the one below according to nvidia's instructions:
Hardware Method:
- Disconnect power cable
- Connect power cable to SHIELD and hold down the remote locator button
- Release the keys once you see the fastboot menu on the screen (it's
red in color)
- If the standard boot process starts, disconnect the power cable and
repeat
the process
*******************************************************************************
FASTBOOT MENU NAVIGATION
*****
Once in fastboot mode (it's red in color), navigate the menus using the
remote locator button on the device.
Short press to navigate and long press for ~2s to select.
*******************************************************************************
FLASHING THE DEVICE
*****
To flash the recovery image to your SHIELD from fastboot, download the
image package.
- Download the image package. Copy the same downloaded zip file with
name
'nv-recovery-image-shield-atv-2019_.zip' to a uSD card that is FAT32
formatted
(where corresponds to the image version of the update being
installed).
Insert uSD card into the uSD card slot on the device
- in fastboot mode select Factory Data reset (opp in Recovery menu
scegli wipe data/factory reset)
- Enter recovery kernel by selecting the option "Boot recovery kernel"
from fastboot menu
- Once the device boots into recovery kernel, you will see a "No
command" image on the
screen
- Long press the remote locator button for ~2s and release button.
Recovery menu should show up (it's blue and green).
If not, please try to long press the button again
- On the recovery menu, select the option "apply update from SD card"
(navigate using short
press of remote locator button and long press ~4s to select and
release button)
- From the SD card contents, select the image package
- At anytime if the display goes back to the "No command" picture, press
the button for ~2s and release button
to go back to the previous screen
- Once the image is selected, the update process should start
Unfortunately the process interrupts with "newer build ....error status
7". I deleted the first two rows of UPDATE-SCRIPT, repacked in ZIP and
reflashed but in vain!! the error was:"Signature failure"
I also use SIGNAPK to sign the new ZIP, but in vain....
Any help?
Does anybody found solution to force downgrade (2019 nonPRO of course)?
Hello, I have a device that at this moment, after a failed update, ended up blocking..Now I turn it on, I feel that the nvidia heats up, but I don't have a signal on the television or anything, I've tried to do a reset but I haven't been successful because I am unable to enter to the fastboot screen... Does anyone who has gone through the same problem have any tips? Any help would be nice...Thanks

This is exactly what's happening to me. For some reason the network stopped working. I tried to see what happens if I factory reset. After the factory reset the device no longer displays anything. It does turn on and I can turn the tv and receiver on and off with the shield remote. I can enter the bootloader though.
Is this a coincidence or did the latest update screw something up?
