There is another way.
AOSP already released source code.
You can always build custom ROM for yourself

Latest pixel September build even boots without permissiver.zip. I flashed it yesterday and it is surprisingly usable, but fingerprint unlock doesn't seem to work. You need latest boot and vendor from flex and the latest play service apk.

I saw that once you upgrade to 7.0 (for example v7.2.9) that bootloader will be automatically locked, and we will have to unlock it once again.
Can anyone confirm if this is true,

Bootloader cannot be locked unless its instructed by you. Flashing process doesn't have any interference with the Bootloader. Still, about my personal experience, I migrate from custom roms to MIUI 7.1.12 and back atleast twice a week. Its not the case. And given the reason neither its supposed to be. You can clear your doubts.

Yes this is my understanding too, and i myself flash constantly -
but according to xiaomi.eu page for build 7.2.9 : " RELESED Android 7.0 for MI4C, Mi4S, MIMAX, MIMAX PRO, MINote PRO
Your BOOTLOADER will be relocked after upgrade to Android 7.0 so unlock it by en.miui.com/unlock after ROM installation again!!!"

No worries, I flashed today without knowing above and my bootloader still unlocked.
After flashing gapps I get lots error messages. Otherwise no big difference in miui.
Worked ok with supersu 2.79 and twrp 3.0.2

No way! I've been looking forward to properly implemented multiwindow since I first saw Android N. That's such a shame
yep, xiaomi took android 7.0 and transformed it to MIUI 8 based on 6.0 i was hoping at least for display resolution support from 7.0 but no, you still have to edit build.prop and distort apps and icons in default theme. i don't need 6.5" screen because of 1cm fonts

It's been always Like that on MIUI, the changes come with MIUI upgrades not Android upgrades.

Turn A1 into Mi 5X or not?

I am about to receive my Mi A1. In general, I do prefer MIUI over plain stock Android (...yes, I know that is not that common ). So naturally, I am thinking about to directly flash the A1 into a Mi 5X.
What are your opinions? Anybody here who has done it? Bugs afterwards? OTA?
Not going to work... You could brick the device..
I hear somethink about differences in partitions so better just don't do that because you can REALLY brick your phone.
Mi A1 has A/B partition which allows seamless updates whereas Mi 5X has the normal single partition. I suggest you to wait for about a month. Xiaomi will release the kernel sources (hopefully) this month and developers will make a MIUI ROM. If you tried to flash the Mi 5X ROM, you will end up bricking your phone.
Thread about "A1 into a Mi 5X" No 958484383828284.
What happened to XDA and moderating team?

If you wanted MIUI, you should've gotten yourself a Mi 5X. What's this nonsense thing, flash A1 into Mi 5x? It won't work. Be prepared for trouble if you try to do so.
Wait for kernel sources to be available, development to swing in. There will be a number of custom ROMs including MIUI.

Please, before asking anything read and search, there are many many many threads about A1 vs 5X. If you want Miui just because of Miui and no other reason than I can't get it why you bought A1, 5X is in general cheaper then A1.
Can't wait for Xiaomi to release kernel sources and someone ports Miui so this can stop.

ETA of Android Version 8.1 for Mi A1

Is Xaiomi ever going to release version 8.1 for Mi A1 or we will just be getting security updates without any android system upgrade ?!
8.1 is way more stable than 8.0 and it has got a bunch of cool features like changing of System notification shade according to the applied wallpaper and what not..!
Nokia,Sony,Motorola are skipping 8.0 and directly going for version 8.1 for their devices for the same reason.
Is Xaiomi headed in the same direction too.?!
asking too much lol

Sure we are getting it. But when is the unknown part. Try asking Xiaomi And social media like Facebook or something. But I guess it won't be long. Let's say in 2 to 3 months we'll see it. Only Xiaomi knows that answer for sure

Yes. We can use the Arm64 A/B version. No need to flash Gapps as it already includes it.

That has nothing to do with this. And to the OP it should work no issues. Well I mean no other issues than the ones currently in the rom. If you read the thread there's fingerprint issues headphone jack no audio issues nav-bar issues. So is best to wait, but nice find

I'm using this one. Bluetooth isn't working. Battery backup is not as good as in Pie custom roms. Some apps don't work (e.g. Facebook messenger). besides that it's okay for me.
You can try to use flex old boot.img may it fix Bluetooth.
