Speakerphone (loudness, clarity) - Sony Xperia 5 Real Life Review

Proper etiquette aside (hint: don't use speakerphone while doing your "business" in a public bathroom), rate this thread to express how you think the Sony Xperia 5's speakerphone performs. A higher rating indicates that you love it: it's loud and it's clear.
Then, drop a comment if you have anything to add!

I honestly thought that the only speaker config would be both on top each side but even though the speaker is on the edge and the other is in the usual ear position it's still able to provide a very respectable audio quality but nothing to write home about. The rear glass does appear to resinate quite a bit when the volume is high. Probably not good for the phone. Still waiting on a cover so see how this affects audio quality.
Day 4.
The Cover has arrived. I'ts pretty much the only one you can get and there are loads of similar or same sort of covers you can get. I opted for the harder plastic shell over the more rubbery one in the hope that the phone won't bounce somewhere unexpected. I've left the plastic protector (which incidently appears to have been either put on the wrong way round or they covered the front facing camera on the screen. I can't find any plastic type protectors around yet only glass..I just need a thin plastic protector that will protect against key scratches.
The cover leaves room for the fingerprint sensor and connector, mic, bottom loud speaker, all cameras and cable with a little lip over the front to prevent a fall on it's face. well I don't intend to test that out.
I've been poking around in the developer section which provides pretty HQ bluetooth settings which I'm guessing are for the headphone offer. You get a range of HiFi audio options AAC, Qualcomm APTX HQ Audio plus whatever optional codecs could be at 96.0Khz and also options up to 32 Bits/sample.. Which is pretty astonishing for bluetooth. I'm looking forward to getting these headphones more and more now which I'm hoping they will not disapoint.

Low tech fix for mic on Asus Transformer

Hi everybody! I'm new to posting here although I have been reading the posts for a while.
I have an Asus Transformer tf101 and have struggled with the mic volume just like everyone else. It's the biggest bug bear for me.
I've scoured the web for ideas until I decided the low tech approach may bear fruit. I disassembled the screen and took a look at the mic. What I found surprised me. It is not really the mics fault or even it's location. It's the stupid little hole that asus stuck in the side! The mic actually points forwards I think.
Anyway I took out my DeWalt and I put a hole in the front of the bezel. Voila! Mic works much better. Still not hugely sensitive but it is an amazing difference.
I used a larger bit to create a bell mouth and a smaller bit to go all the way through. This is probably not necessary and some might not like the appearance of it but I like it.
Before drilling a hole in your nice unscratched bezel, try the mic with and then without the bezel on by, say, ringing the skype test call service (as I did) so that you are satisfied that it is worth it.
Be careful to remove the micro sd card if you have one and also be very careful to peel off the bezel WITH the black plastic trim that sits between it and the screen. Needless to say, do not even think about drilling the hole with the bezel in place. You will trash the mic and generally make a mess!
I'd be interested to hear back from anyone else who has done this. A quick tutorial on removing the bezel can be found here:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JG9gEYRALtU.
I hope this is helpful to some of my fellow tf101 owners. This is, I believe, the only way to fix the mic volume problem.
Cheers for reading my post!
Well I did say it was low tech....

[HARDWARE MOD] [EXTERNAL SPEAKER] Increase your Xperia Z external speaker volume Mod*

Hi All
Yesterday while playing with my phone and after becoming a victim of the low speaker volume post dipping in water, I just found out that the external speaker's volume can be increased* on par with other competitor manufacturer phone by this method.
*Note: You WILL lose the waterproofness feature of the phone by doing this. Do this only if you're sure that you're not going to dunk your phone in the water the next time you want to show off. You have been warned.
So for this mod, all you need is a tiny sharp pin, gentle hands and patience.
I do not have any pictures to post at the moment but I guess this is a fairly simple task and anyone can perform it.
Using the sharp pin, pry out the shiny plastic frame just at the end of the external speaker. Only pry out the length of the speaker and not any longer because it's unnecessary. Then, you can find a tiny strip of micro porous membrane. This is what protects the phone from water ingress at the speaker output. Carefully peel out the membrane ensuring that it's not being damaged while you do this.
Just to confirm that this mod actually does help, you can perform your own test. Play your favourite song in Walkman, and peel and unpeel the membrane and notice the difference in sound output.
This mod will also help people who have very low volume after dipping the phone in water. Just peel the membrane a bit and then reattach it properly ensuring its properly sealed. This should solve your low volume problem. Press the frame material by applying force at the speaker area to seal the frame properly.
There you have it, it's not that the speaker is crap or the volume is too low in this phone. Things have been kept to a maintain a balance between durability and function.
Please do let me know if you like this mod and if it has helped you, hit the thanks button.
Has anyone tried this yet?
Does going too loud not damage the internals against which it was designed for? Not to mention the waterproofing being gone now.

No iDroid8, the internals are not damaged by doing this mod, you're just opening up the more obstructed sound caused due to the waterproof flaps that are present in the Xperia Z.
This mod does not do anything to the speaker itself, the speaker works as stock but the sound is improved due to the much better opening created.
And Yes, as mentioned in the mod itself, this makes you lose the waterproof feature but this mod is for people who really want a louder phone and can live without the waterproofness feature.
you sure that's not just a dust filter?
There was a post some time ago from someone who'd dismantled their XZ and found a small piece of polycarb protecting the speaker that affected the volume.

I'm not sure about what's mentioned in that thread. There the backplate itself was removed. It could as well be the similar thing but I just accessed the mesh filter that we can see from outside near the speaker area. It might as well be a dust filter but then where's the water being stopped? Does it go into the mesh and then stop somewhere inside?

Ergonomics (in-hand feel)

Please, no "that's what she said" jokes. Rate this thread to express how you think the Asus ROG Phone feels in-hand. A higher rating indicates that it's comfortable to hold for long periods of time, even in one hand. Resist the urge to say "TWSS" just now. Seriously.
Then, drop a comment if you have anything to add!
if you use your pinky to hold the phone up, you might want to stay away from this phone.
the "glass" could be plastic, that meets at the edges of the back of the phone will start to irritate your finger/skin. after 4 days with the phone, I feel like it's almost like cutting into the skin.
The cause of this is the gap that inherent between the "glass" piece and the actual body
I hope it's better than the design of the Razer Phones with the speaker grill 1-2mm higher than the screen as my thumb's feel like they get cuts in them from swiping from top and bottom edges.
before I bought this phone I was using S7 edge and I must say , this is a big and heavy phone. I'm still getting used to the big screen and the lack of the home button. I love the phone but it's heavy
Been using this phone from past few days. It's very difficult to hold this phone while gaming especially if you use your little fingers at the bottom. I think without a case it's gonna be difficult to use. But am just used to it. May be it would take some time. But the phone itself is amazing for the few features.
I can see ROG phone users having extra muscles on their pinkies
As the previous comments, this phone IS heavy. 200g after 30 mins takes its toll on your hands and fingers.
For a horizontal hold, your pinkies will start developing muscles or you learn to hold it with both anular and pinkie fingers on the bottom. But this leads you with less space to move your index fingers to reach the air triggers.
In Vertical mode, it is a very regular use, albeit the heavy weight of course. One handed operation is possible if you have big hands / long fingers, but on an average use, you might need to use it with both hands, one for holding it and the other for interacting with the screen.
About the fingerprint reader, even if it is on an odd position, I got used to it very fast. It is accurate and had not had problems at all with it. Although at the beginning, when using the silicon protector for the back, since it has the opening for the cosmetic vents, you end up mistaking this holes with the fingerprint reader hole.
The earphone jack is on the bottom, so for using it on a regular basis, you will need to have your phone upside down on your pocket. It is a bit weird at the beginning, but you get used to it. If you are using this connector on your car, be careful to set the phone horizontally, or use a cradle, otherwise you might damage your cable or the connector itself.
For charging, I found no troubles using the bottom connector, and while gaming, the side USB-C connector is a blessing.
Overall it is a smooth experience, but you will suffer initially because of the phone weight.

Quality feel (use of materials)

Rate this thread to express how you think the Samsung Galaxy A71 feels in terms of quality. A higher rating indicates that it feels premium and high-quality (attention to detail is high, manufacturing defects don't exist, etc).
Then, drop a comment if you have anything to add!
There is no good feeling of quality. It looks like a slouch-designed device. But the A71 is not the only one. Several Samsung devices manufactured this year give me the same feeling. There is a lack of care and affection with the details.
First: All made of plastic. The edges, in addition to being made of plastic, are shiny and easy to scratch. Incidentally, mine already got a scratch next to the USB type C.
Recently I had a quick experience with a very cheap Samsung J2 Core. And despite being all plastic, it feels more premium than the A71, as it has a matte side finish.
Second: The sound output grid at the top is completely decentralized. I see much cheaper devices from other brands that have greater care in this regard. It seems that Samsung just cut out a piece of plastic grid anyway and fitted the speaker line anyway. From one side up. On the other, lower. And totally off center.
Third: The input of the USB type C connector also demonstrates Samsung's lack of whimsy in terms of finish. There appears to be a gap between the metal connector at the bottom and the plastic body. A beautiful entrance door for dust and debris into the device.
Just for comparison, I have a cheaper Motorola device, made of plastic too, and there doesn't seem to be any spacing between the USB Type-C connector and the plastic body. I also photographed my old Samsung Galaxy A7 2017, a premium intermediary smartphone from 3 years ago, which cost a lot cheaper than the A71, and has a much more refined finish.
The images have been attached below.
i have a good case on mine , problem solved. got mine for 340 quid, ( UK ) cant moan yes its feel cheap at the back , i have no gap by the usb socket . it ticks all the boxes. there was either that or another LG ( came from a V20 ) is it more flimsy than than my V20 .. oh yes!
People who complain about plastic and then complain when their glass back phone cracks are hilarious to me. I've had plastic builds and glass built phones and guess which ones last the longest and looking better over time, the plastic build.
My note 5 looks like crap now with all the cracks and repairing it is expensive. I also have a note 4 and that still looks awesome and looks better than my Note 5. Marketing has just swayed people to think that glass-back phones are better. I agree that the side would have been nice if it were metal but a simple fix for that is to use a thin case. Another thing I do is put a skin on it which makes the phone last and look longer whether it's glass or plastic. Problem solved.
The A71 would be heavier if it was made from glass and metal and make it more cumbersome to handle. The build makes the phone easy to handle in a one-handed operation. To each their own I guess.

Ergonomics (in-hand feel)

Please, no "that's what she said" jokes. Rate this thread to express how you think the LG V60 ThinQ feels in-hand. A higher rating indicates that it's comfortable to hold for long periods of time, even in one hand. Resist the urge to say "TWSS" just now. Seriously.

Ugh...good and bad. Without the case, it's really nice in the hand. But it is VERY heavy coming from my V30. It's a little too well-balanced at the middle of the body. I wish it was slightly bottom heavy. The reason why is that it's long enough (too long) that when I hold it in my hands, my pointer fingers get a lot of the weight. I have to place them a little more towards the top of the phone to avoid that "tipping" feeling.
I bought the Verizon-branded case, and it's just ok. The bottom cutout for the USB port is a little sharp.
I really love how it feels without the case. Just very heavy. Not sure how it's going to feel with the second screen attached.
Brand new today and have had it in my hand all day long with the dual screen. It seems to balance decently in my hand, even when using one handed.
However, a big most definite YES!!!! The very first thing I most definitely noticed right out of the box was the hefty weight of this device, and that is without the second screen. Actually I noticed some weight before even unboxing! My first thought was that they must have some thick heavy, glossy paper coated paper user manuals and documentation inside of that package.
Unboxing and removing the phone the box felt substantially lighter, the phone, not so much! I suppose because the main unit has so much heft, I really don't notice a lot of extra weight when installed in the second screen flip case.
On a lighter note..... My initial impression with the extra weight is that the phone actually has a comforting and solid feel that invokes confidence in its durability. I think I like how solid it feels.
Time will tell, as I am notoriously hard on my phones and the solid mass might end up working against me and the phones ability to withstand brutality!
I too have upgraded from the LG V30+ to this phone, and there's a definite increase in heft, bulk, and overall volume/size.
My hands are fairly small, but I actually find the phone to be less uncomfortable to use than the reviews I read would have led me to believe.
In other words, I was expecting a worse hands-on experience than what I'm actually experiencing myself.
I have the dual-screen attachment as well, and while I'm no longer using it for a variety of reasons, it doesn't add a substantial amount of weight to the overall package.
It DOES, however, add more bulk/volume. And the ergonomics of the dual-screen's case (which is mandatory, as the second screen is built into the case) makes typing on the primary phone in portrait basically impossible (one of the many reasons I've retired the accessory).
I'll echo doug's comment about the phone's weight distribution. I wish the weight of the phone was distributed more towards the bottom of the device rather than the middle. But it's by no means a deal-breaker.
Comin' from the V20, the V60 is slightly longer in height and a bit shorter in width. It's also a bit heavier. What I dislike is the fngerprint captor underneath the screen. I found the rear V20 sensor came much more naturally under the index finger when I picked up the phone. With the V60 you have to register your thumb and you have to do it with your thumb not parallel to the phone's edges but obliquely so that it works while you pick up the phone. Definitely not a improvement in my opinion.
Dual screen cover is bulky but I use it at home so...
