Strange, I don't see ZTE Max 2 forum, so naturally I thought I'd post here.
Phone looks great on paper, but not sure if we can mod it. Thanks!
Probably no recovery yet but you can try Kingroot app to root the device. I have the first Zmax since it first came out and it was a pnta to mod. We were able to use Kingroot to root it but have to flash scripts to maintain r/w acess. Don't get me wrong the phone without root is still a great bang for the buck. If I were you I would read through the original Zmax forum.
No root right now. srsroot announced couple time but never worked. Kingroot tried some new way but still failed at the end.
Fastboot disabled
The ZTE ZMax 2 (Z958) from what I have discovered has a disabled fastboot. Without fastboot we will not be able to unlock the boot loader. Which in turn will not allow us to flash a alternative recovery.

Does that mean no root? or we have to wait until root to enable fast boot?
zmax2 z955l
can any one help, just bought this zmax2 z955l phone from a non-profit organization but it kept asking for the previous email that was sync with the phone last.
has any one found a way to root the z958 yet been browsing for quite sometime and everything i've tried simply doesnt work.
Any new developments on this? I am running out of space and would like to use link2sd but it tells me I need Root access.
Has anyone tried to use the OEM unlock in developer options menu?

I have a potential root on my zmax 2. I got kingoroot on my computer and rooted it with a charging USB cord. Kingo root said it was successful and its super user app asked for root acces .
However when I download an app that uses roo . It would ask for permission uponnhitting the allow button, after a while it would say access denied.
Also root checkers will say it isn't rooted... I hope this helps at all. I guess you could say its like a semi-root. I do not know, however, if it stays after I reboot the phone
Kingo PC is actually working!!! but the kingo's superuser app has some problem with. you have to Deny and Allow the app that request for root couple times. Or you can uninstall the kingo superuser app in order to get root. But this is only a Temp root. Hopefully someone can compile a twrp for Zmax2 and hopefully we can use flashify to flash twrp..
This would be very nice!

Um if you uninstall the super user app from Kingo and get like SuperSU, it requires that it get the binarys however it won't ever get them and basically you're stuck on a temp rooted phone..

Is anyone still on this? I was able to gain perm root I believe. After reboot, root sticks. I followed a guide to turn off nand / system write protection using ADB, then was able to use PC KingoRoot. In adb I used "adb reboot disemmcwp" to disable write protection. To re-enable it says to issue this command "adb reboot emmcwpenab". Here is the link to the post I used before attempting PC KingoRoot

I want to root my 6p because I want to enable miracast streaming to my TV. I know theres a line or so I need to add to the bottom in order for that to work.
My question is this: If i root is there some kind of other upkeep I would need to do to make sure my phone works and gets updated as normal while it's rooted? I'm not a tinkerer when it comes to this, I just saw I could achieve miracast if I went with this method, so figured it was worth it to find out what Id be getting myself into if I rooted the phone.
you cannot update your phone OTA while rooted.
so if you're not a tinkerer, you need to learn to be if you root.

I read someone was able to get around it by unchecking OEM unlock in dev settings and doing the update then re enabling it after update. I assume they also had systemless root and lost that during the update. But I have not tried this myself.

This is not true, once you root your phone, you will be unable to accept OTA update unless you revert back to stock, ie;
Stock Recovery
Stock Boot
Stock System
If you are at all uncomfortable attempting I suggest you do not root.

Here is a link to what I read. It wouldn't be hard to remove root and flash stock recovery if you wanted to upgrade. As long as you are still stock obviously.

No.
To root you need to use a custom recovery, TWRP.
As long as you have TWRP installed no OTA.
Just download and flash the updates.

I'm new to xda and obviously I'm not a dev. I just want to root my Axon 7 so I can download root apps. Can anyone give a step by step tutorial on how to root my phone?

I'm running B29.
What version are you running? B20/B27/B29
If you are not tech savvy, do not attempt the root method. It's for advance user and too many people have bricked their phone already. Just read the threads and you will know what I mean.

And yes I can probably guess the amount of people who bricked their phones. But what if everything were to be laid out simple and I follow the directions in every respect? I'm not going to start rooting until I know what I'm doing. So don't worry. I'm stupid but I'm not THAT stupid.
No your fine lmao I started with this phone so we're pretty much same level. As to my understanding it is possible but I would wait just a bit for the b29 stuff to come out.
Don't worry, you're not the only one. I've been reading these tutorials and it's all gibberish, lol.... Every phone I have has been rooted within the first day, this phone I've had over 2 months, and I still can't get it. So you're not alone, lol...
There definitely needs to be some cleaning done on this forum, with far too many threads covering the same topics and many OPs being out of date.
Best rooting guide I found was buried in a thread, but is now also out of date if you're running B29.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=68302434&postcount=157
It might help if you're still on B27. I used it, had root and bootloader still locked, updated to B29 for the security patch, and was able to keep TWRP but lost root. Having TWRP still allows me to flash all the Google pixel stuff though, which is nice

I'm looking closely at this phone now myself...
I've seen the bootloader thread: http://forum.xda-developers.com/axon-7/development/wip-axon-7-root-bootloader-unlokced-t3441204
I'm only interest in this if I can successfully unlock the bootloader and stock root is possible...from what I've read, BOTH can be done. According to the root thread, the model I need (A2017G) is listed as unlockable, correct? What's the difference between a2017g B02 and B03??

OK I have read far too many of these questions here about root on B29 - so here goes.
1. Go to the ZTE website, download the stock B20, and install it.
2. http://forum.xda-developers.com/axon-7/development/wip-axon-7-root-bootloader-unlokced-t3441204 use this to get TWRP installed on your phone - don't worry about root.
3. http://forum.xda-developers.com/axon-7/how-to/guide-how-to-unlock-bootloader-stay-t3461165 UNLOCK the bootloader
4. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=68873482&postcount=2 flash boot file, system file, and SuperSU 2.65
Now please relax - anyone here with any dev skills whatsoever are neck deep in other projects (like CM13). B29 hasn't been out long and the only stock image we have from ZTE is B20, which doesn't give us a ton to work with
I also very new to android smartphone and I also feel so so out of place too.
I wish someone make a video how to root this axon 7 phone.
search around youtube jailbrake iPhone is so easy root samsung phone is so easy.... but root axon 7 nothing
I love axon 7 so much now but if I know it's so hard to root i'm just gonna buy samsung phone .
so F..... tired of this youtube ads
ads block is the only reason why I want to root
and that is the only reason why I jailbrake all my ideviese
For me, also with B29, the best and easy way was this from rczrider (thanx a lot). http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=69507226&postcount=766
But one issue after root: I have no access to system, i noticed that, as i install Gsam Battery Monitor root companion, that will install in priv-app but i was write protect. Also RootExplorer was not possible to copy/delete files in system, because write protect. How to change that?

I forgot to add a final step to that list. I've updated it and here's the new one:
Copy everything off your internal storage that you don't want to lose.
Get all of the files you need from the steps below and put them on your microSD card.
Flash TWRP (recovery) using the method in the OP (B27 file is fine). You don't need to flash the boot image.
Unlock the bootloader (B27 is fine): http://forum.xda-developers.com/axon-7/how-to/guide-how-to-unlock-bootloader-stay-t3461165
Flash B29: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=68873482&postcount=2
Boot phone, set it up, whatever
*Reboot to TWRP, go to Advanced > Terminal and type: reboot disemmcwp
This will leave you with an unlocked bootloader, a fully functioning TWRP (no data encryption issue), and rooted B29. You will not be able to receive OTAs.
*This disables write protection and allows your changes (such as AdAway) to stick with reboot. You need to run this before your changes will stick. You don't have to use TWRP (you could also use a terminal emulator or ADB), but I find that since you have to reboot anyway, it's just as easy to do it in TWRP.

Yes, ZTE still supports bootloader unlocking on the Axon 7. It is currently on hold, but yes, our understanding is that they will be releasing a new process (likely with Nougat).
I can't think of any reason not to unlock now because you can always re-lock if you want to. Who knows what the new process will entail.

Yea well I was hoping the new tool wouldn't kill the warranty but that's wishful thinking, and after some thought I highly doubt that will happen. So time to unlock the bootloader,l and flash TWRP.....soon as I get off work in 9 hours.

I think ZTE will eventually put out a bootloader unlock without killing the warranty. But, yeah, either way it's easy enough to do it on your own now.

Hi I have a CID 11 sm-g900v that I would like to install twrp recovery on. Is there any way to unlock the bootloader or flash it or do anything to get twrp on it?
The reason I ask is I would love to have magisk manager on it, but from what I understand it needs twrp on the phone first.
I want to have root, but I also want to play certain games on Google Play that won't install if it detects you have root. Magisk has a way to hide root on your phone.
IMO it's complete BS that they do this. It's no one else's business if your phone is rooted or not. I kind of wish I could dual-boot my phone. One partition that has an OS with root access, and another partition with an OS that doesn't. Of course even if that was possible I would need an unlocked bootloader to do that.
Anyways any help would be appreciated.

Unless you've somehow gotten it unlocked, then I doubt that. Give him some info rather than the one line answers.
What can I say? I download TWRP for klte on to my computer. I open the Odin program, left click run as administrator. In the AP slot I put TWRP for klte. Turn off phone and restart into download mode, or Odin mode as some call it. Plug it into the computer.I click Start. I then have root access and can install ROMs. I don't know what other information to give other than that

At least, SM-S902L is a CDMA/LTE phone and SM-G900V is a CDMA/LTE/GSM/UMTS phone.

I just upgrade my g900v from Kitkat to Lollipop. Verizon locks the bootloader, so there's no way to get Clockwork or TWRP on it. However, many features of TWRP (including creating an image of the phone to SD card) are in SafeStrap, which does work on this phone. See my recent posts for the links I used to do this, or start researching SafeStrap to see if that will allow you to achieve your goal.

I've tried installing twrp on my phone using the standard method. It bricks the phone. I have to re-image the OS to get the phone working again. So no, we don't have the same phone.
Even if we did have the same model phone, this model has two different chips. I have the "bad" chip in my phone that is hard to work with.
I'm thinking of just getting rid of it. I've had to many issues with this and at this point I just hate it.
I wish phone manufacturers would stop the crap and just give us access to root. Why play all these games?

The only reason I want twrp is to install magisk manager so I can "cloak" the root on my phone and play games like super mario run (which won't install on rooted phones) and still have root access.
I have safestrap installed but when I install magisk it bricks the phone and I have to re-image it again.
I've re-imaged my phone like 5 times already. I'm sick and tired of it. My next phone will either have one-click root or I won't be rooting it. I'm never imaging a phone again.
Hi guys, I am new to this forum and also new to rooting.
I am planning to root my pixel 4 just to use motion sense option in Oman.
I went through some procedures and videos in youtube but still scared to do it because there is chance of bricking my phone, ryt?!
just want to clarify few things.
1. What if it doesn't root properly, Can i bring my phone back to factory setting? Unroot possible?
2. What are the disadvantages in rooting? Malwares and virus can get in easily? Is it possible to protect?
3. Is it possible to install apps from apptricks.co or appinject.cc or tutuapp (like premium apps for free)
I appreciate your help & comments on this
Thanks,
Is your pixel 4 a google edition phone or is a carrier branded? Come to think of it, it doesn't really matter. You need to check to see if your bootloader can be unlocked. If your bootloader can be unlocked you won't have a problem rooting your phone. In order to unlock the bootloader you need to enable developer options by following the steps here
Then once you have that enabled, then follow this guide to unlock your BL.
Once that's done install magisk and root your phone, blam! Done!

I see I need to address some other concerns:
I went through some procedures and videos in youtube but still scared to do it because there is chance of bricking my phone, ryt?! With today's phones, while certainly not impossible, it is very difficult to brick a phone. It's doubtful you would ever do unless you were REALLY screwing with your phone
just want to clarify few things.
1. What if it doesn't root properly (your phone will either root, or it won't), Can i bring my phone back to factory setting (yes, you need to find the stock factory images for your phone and specific carrier)? Unroot possible (yes, uninstall magisk)?
2. What are the disadvantages in rooting (google it)? Malwares and virus can get in easily (malware and viruses can get in anyways, be cautious what you put on your phone)? Is it possible to protect (see previous answer)?
3. Is it possible to install apps from apptricks.co or appinject.cc or tutuapp (like premium apps for free). Rooting will allow you to install apps requiring root. Many customization options become available in addition to gaining control over nearly every aspect of the OS, but beware. Having access to the root files in your phone is the same as messing with system files in your PC - it can crash the system.. So unless you know what you are doing, you should stay out of those folders and files lowest on the root tree. Rooting will not allow you to get apps for free
