Best GPS / 4G / WiFi rooftop antenna? - Android Head-Units

What are ya'll using that is 3rd party roof antenna for combo of LTE/GPS/WiFi?
WiFi isn't as big a deal but it's usually ending up standard on these combo antennas.
Something low profile?
Doesn't stick out like a sore thumb?
Wires are shielded well enough they don't pick up interference from other wires?
What's good, what's bad?
Will the current 4G antennas work for 5G
I've seen prices anywhere from $30 to $500.
But since it's an antenna that will require a small hole drilled through your roof, we want to make sure we do it with the right equipment, the first time.
Not that you can't just swap it out but who wants to deal with that every year.

This 4G modem:
https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B01MQRHQYT/ref=ox_sc_saved_title_9?smid=A1TO3HHQ862D82&psc=1
And this antenna are on my to-do list:
https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B075DCNTQP/ref=ox_sc_saved_title_4?smid=A1DZ2KWUETHME0&psc=1
But I'd like to spend a bit more for an antenna that will last a long, long time.
And have a lower profile.
And if it could pull in OTA HDTV that would be a bonus.

I've been looking for something like that mainly for to replace my FM whip with a shark fin type. Newer models of my car have it and the connection is the same but it's pricey from the manufacturer so I figured I'd visit the scrap yard. In the same line of thinking I believe BMW or Mercedes have one with at least 4G maybe GPS but the FM connector would probably have to be modified.
There's combo antennas on Aliexpress but I have doubts about the end result. I guess the price is low enough might be worth a try just for giggles.
It's a lot easier to find add-on antennas and keep using your old FM.
This one should work as well as OEM and comes with an OEM price tag.
As for the 5G thing don't worry the 4G frequencies and antennas will still be used and it adds millimeter wave spectrum but that's short range.

You may check out the Mikrotik router, which is a real automotive router
I have tested the EU version of the Mikrotik and the Teltonika RUT850, both are nice pieces of hardware, not expensive and good features.
the Mikrotik has internal Antenna`s and support for external, and the Teltonika even is delivered with Antennas (but only EU version i think)
For an external antenna, why putting such an ugly small antenna on the roof ?
Use a normal (or two if you have a good MIFI router) 20-30cm long LTE Antenna for 10 bucks and mount them on the sides behind the back bumper (as long as its not a metal bumper )

The stock antennas that came with my Joying work just great. I have the 4G Joying headunit you can put a sim in . I have the stock 4G antenna stuck on the inside of the windshield behind the rear view mirror. Get 4 to 5 bars of 4G service everywhere in town. My stock GPS antenna is in the dash stuck with the magnet placed on top of the headunit and I have never once had any signal problems. If your in the USA both tmobile and ATT pickup the headunit as a unknown phone with the sim in it and not a tablet or modem, and you dont have to pay the outrageous data fees like a tablet or 4g modem plan they charge. You can use a "phone" plan. Confirmed cause I run a tmobile sim in mine and my buddy runs an ATT sim in his with the cheap phone plans. Tmobile offers unlimited data on phone plans and I use 30-40gig data a month in my truck with it for 40/month cost.

I saw a review of those cheaper fin aerials (forgot to save the address). Seems they're not worth the money the FM aerial is just a piece of spiral wound wire.

The Joying built in modem is not very good for USA.
It only gets about half (?) of the bands used by T-Mobile and probably not all of the AT&T either.
In my area, I am only connected about half the time.
While my cellphone is connected 100% of the time.
This is with the antenna in my windshield.
I gave up on the Joying modem and just tether from my phone now.
The Mikrotik looks interesting but seems to also not get all bands.
I'll look at the other suggestion also.
Thanks for the posts so far. :good:

Conclusion: Wizard's RF reception is crap

I was at my gf's place and decided to test out my Tmo's sim card on her very old ATT (they don't even exist anymore, that's how old) phone. Of course, what did you expect the result was going to be after reading the subject? I normally get absolutely zero reception here because (I think) she lives in the basement). With the ATT phone, I get 1 solid bar. If I move a little, I can get as much as three. Still, my Wizard gets nothing here.
Anyway, has anyone tried to mod the antenna? I know that it's probably REALLY small or has little surface area.

I have the same problem at some of my clients house. Where is the antenna actually located at, since it is entirely internal? And what do you guys all think about those little antennna booster "stickers" that you can get off eBay. http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=190004979280

If you have that bad of reception you might want to upgrade the radio software or actually buy a premade antenna. I had the same problem where I live and this and my Motorola Razr V3 both work now, with the antenna cables that I bought.
Just a tought.

and how exactly do you attach a premade antenna to the Wizard? YOu have any pictures...aka does it make it fugly or bulkier to carry? Where did you buy a premade antenna?

Those antenna boosters are ,...well...CRAP. All they do is thicken and/or "gum" up the phone and still don't work.
Buy an Antenna cable and use the antenna port on the phone. That's what is was made for. My works VERY well, and I have tried the "sticker" antennas.

I have 2.24.10.1 radio ROM. Is 2.25 that much of a difference (highly doubt it)? I think you might have something there with the premade antenna. I can have my phone hooked up to that while using my BT headset to roam ~30ft about the phone.
Do these actually work? I was thinking about sticking this onto one of her windows. hehehehehe. I'm sure the landlord wouldn't like it but it's small so I hope it's not too much of an eye sore.
I bought mine at awswireless.com
1 Wilson Cellular Antenna adapter cable with FME male connector 359909 495704
1 Wilson Cellular Dual band, Tri-mode mini magnet mount antenna 301113
This is what I bought and then you will need an Antenna to attach to the connector cable, that would be the second item. Unless you want a different antenna. I personally like the magnet mount type.
Hope this helps.

[Q] External Antenna

So under black tape behind the battery cover, there are external ports called "R2" "G" and "R1". I found that the plugs are compatible with a Samsung A717.
While researching, I found the ports are compatible with plugs for the Samsung A717 and can be found HERE.
My thoughts were, to build a home made signal antenna/booster similiar to THIS.
There is very little info that I could find on this, so I thought i'd reach out to the community to see if anyone knows what port is for an external antenna... and also, if anyone know of a better homemade signal booster/amplifier setup?
I didn't even know that those ports where there... That's awesome! I know this comment doesn't help but I had to say something!

I knew about the ports . For the heck of it I tried an external antenna that I had from my omnia. Great signal boost, but seemed to ruin the antenna. Use caution.

Can you give some more information on this? The external antennae did work, gave a signal boost, but then was ruined and presumably stopped working?
My house seems to be located in a Bermuda Triangle within Verizon's network, and I'd love to find a way to boost my signal strength short of dropping $250 on a network extender and sending my calls (and everyone else's within range) over my internet connection for free, for Verizon.
Slightly off topic, but I wanted to insert a bit of reality into the network extender wish.
Put simply, it's worthless. I got one for FREE and still returned it. It goes offline for hours at a time and, when synched, only works for about a 15ft radius, if that.
That said, if you want one for free, file a compliant with the FCC about the poor call quality and signal strength and you'll likely be offered one for free as well.
Good luck, either way.

Just to throw in my two cents' worth, extenders are not always worthless, though quality may vary. At the last place I worked, my department got moved into the basement of one of the buildings, where you were lucky to get one bar of service on our company cell phones, which were through Sprint. That was unacceptable, so the company had somebody from Sprint mount an antenna on the roof and run a wire from there down to a repeater box that was mounted on the ceiling of the basement level. After that, we got full bars on all our phones in the basement. Of course then everybody else hated us, since the breakroom was down there, and before that they usually wouldnt get interrupted by cell phone calls while at lunch, due to the poor signal.
Extenders work just fine, providing you don't get a cheap junk one, and providing there's even a good signal for it to extend in the first place.
Posted from my DL09 SuperClean Fascinate with Voodoo
The one you had access to isn't how the Verizon extender works. The Verizon one works similar to a Wi-Fi router, not as a repeater. It literally becomes a cell tower, just at such a low wattage it doesn't penetrate anything. It also doesn't repeat to a tower, it connects via your home inet connection to Verizon's exchange, so you get lag twice. If you read the manual for it, it tells you it won't work outside 15ft. Verizon just doesn't advertise that on the advertisements (or the box).
Ah, I didn't realize they had a device like that. Sounds like basically a poor man's cell tower. Too bad it doesn't work for you.
Posted from my DL09 SuperClean Fascinate with Voodoo
At my school system we have some offices and stuff in the district that get really bad service, mostly just because they're in layers of thick concrete and steel. We've been installing some really nice extenders in some of the worse ones, they're very expensive (like $600 a pop) but they do a great job.
OT, what did the poster mean about it ruining his antenna? I'm confused.

I live in the mountains outside Verizon range. The stock Verizon network extender works fine in our 2 story house.

I used an external antenna - same one http://cgi.ebay.com/Samsung-SGH-A74...enna-adapter-/260710050385?pt=PDA_Accessories
It plugged in without a problem and gave a great signal boost, but i suspect that the inner pin on the adapter was too wide for the fascinate and once the plug was removed, I was lucky to be able to make a call at all without the use of the antenna. I replaced my phone under warranty saying that gps was messed up.
If you look hard enough, you may be able to find a suitable adapter designed for the Fascinate.

[Q] Signal issues I've tried hardware fix

So i just got a sim card for my phone. Well i get amazing service at my moms house and thats cause theres a tower right next to us at the local ski resort. However at my fathers house i get horrible service. If i pick up my phone i loose service completely, ive done the hardware fix, which didnt help, and when i do have service its always JUST edge. When according to T-Mobile's coverage map i am flooded with 3g and some 4g all around me.
So im guessing it MUST be the phone. In addition to the hardware fix, im thinking about soldering a 26-30 gauge wire to the two prongs and laying the wire around the device. like the perimiter of the Mobo. Giving it an antenna like my HTC Touch Pro 2.
Also, would flashing a newer radio help any? If i am able to flash a newer radio cause i know in order for android to work that it must be a certain radio. Howerver now that android is set up will i be able to flash one? Im on CLk btw.
Secondly, when i have service its EDGE, but occasionally it will jump to H symbol (Im guessing this is HSDPA) now the reason its jumpping would have to be lack of service, my guessing that is. To me its the equivelant of jumping from 3G to 1x on Sprints network.
Also what is G? lol i am at G now not E or H just G lol. Sorry for my noobishness but im coming from a Sprint CDMA network
Does anybody else have issues like this?

Hey, I've had my HD2 T-mob for over a year now imported to New Zealand. And I'm running on 2degree's(Vodafone) here which runs on GSM and UMTS, I only get reception in cities and it still cuts out when I'm in very low residential areas. I get absolutely no reception outside of any city and it's just completely unreliable, My baseband is 15.42.50.11U_2.15.50.14 I don't know too much about this stuff but I'm pretty sure I'm running the most up to date radio. Any help or recommendations would be superb.

Well after much googling hoping to find a software fix, there isnt any. Its the hardware of the phone(in my case anyhow) T-Mobile's coverage says i have strong 3G and some 4G (like if i drive 5 mins) but yet i can barely pic up edge. So i took apart my phone and solderd two wires the the prongs and BOOM easily 3G was picked up two - three bars. BUT i couldnt reassemble the device because the wires were too big. All in all it comes down to HTC putting in a lowsy antenna. It works good if youre right next to a tower but second you go away it sucks. I mean heck, i bought a cheap 29 dollar T-Mobile prepaid samsung phone and that had 2 bars solid of 3G. So i know the service is there but its just that the phone cannot pick it up.

[Q] T-Mobile signal booster for indoor use

Alright, XDA. I really need your expertise on this one. I am doing everything I can to keep my Nexus 4. Even with its issues and shortcomings, it's the best phone I ever used.
The one thing I need is cell service where I work for calls and SMS only. I have wifi for data. After some Googling, will this work?
http://www.wilsonamplifierstore.com/t-mobile
It says T-Mobile uses 1900MHz for voice calls, sms, and 2G data. This seems just perfect for me. Will this work with my Nexus 4? I don't see why not, but it doesn't hurt to come to you guys first. Obviously, there are other options as well. What makes one more power than another? Are these things as effective as they say? Reviews are good, but I'd like your input before I buy.
Should I go through with this, I'll post a FULL review here. It seems like a great product.
I just got a signal booster from T-Mobile itself (free, except you pay the shipping charge, about $6 IIRC). As I understand it, it wouldn't be suitable for you because it's only for home use, but I'm posting for the benefit of other folks who may see the title and read the thread.
I'm not sure what all the requirements are for getting this from T-Mo -- they reviewed my account information and said I qualified but didn't explain further -- but you do need to be in a detached single-family dwelling and have some point inside your house where you get at least one bar of signal.
The booster consists of two separate units, a receiver (which is placed wherever in your house you get the best signal) and a repeater, which should be placed near where you spend the majority of your time. (The instructions that came with the booster said to place the repeater unit in the farthest corner of the house diagonally opposite the receiver "for best coverage," but that makes no sense: the receiver doesn't transmit, only the repeater does, so the repeater ought to be centrally located or near where you spend your time; it's not a very powerful transmitter, and the signal falls off quite rapidly with distance from the repeater.) The receiver and the repeater are linked wirelessly.
I found that the receiver isn't as sensitive as my phone. I originally placed it where my phone showed two bars, but the receiver indicated no signal. I did find a place where it showed one bar, so it is working for me.
Apart from the issue I mentioned regarding the range of the repeater, the booster is working very well. I get very nice, clear voice connections and as good data rates as I get outside my house -- 6.7 Mbps down, 870 kbps up. Another significant impact is on the phone's battery life: I had 40% left when I went to bed last night, while before it was normally around 10%.
This essentially eliminates my need for wi-fi calling, since I now get sufficient signal at home to use the regular wireless connection.
This is excellent news! I heard of T-Mobile giving these away, but I am on a prepaid plan. Even still, I'll call them and see if I qualify, but probably not since I heard it extends your contract, but not your upgrade eligibility. Don't know how this will work next year when T-Mobile gets rid of contracts all together.
Any idea about this one in particular? Does it work with ALL cell signals from different carriers and repeat them? If so, which ones? Or just certain frequencies/carriers?
Thank you so much for replying!!!
I've been wondering about getting a signal extender as well. They are all extremely expensive though. I get 2 bars of HSPA in my room, but in my living room I get no signal. If T-Mobile sends out the extenders for free, that would be incredible! I really the hope it applies to the prepaid plans though.

I don't know about prepaid plans; I'm on a Classic family plan. They didn't say anything about extending my contract, which I presume they would have if it did. I have three lines, one of which is out of contract, one expires in April, and one in December of next year.

I would be leery of that unit, unless you know what frequencies T-Mobile is using in your area. In particular, it doesn't have the 1700 MHz band, which T-Mobile uses in many areas. I'm not an expert on that, though, and in your area the bands it does support might suffice.
It says it won't work on T-Mobile 1700MHz, which it also says is 3G. I have no problem with this. It also says it will work on 1900MHz, which it says is for T-Mobile voice/sms/2G data. This is perfect for me. Of course, this is what the website says. I have to confirm with other sources that 1900MHz is what I need. It's just voice and sms I need, which is hopefully 1900Mhz in North Jersey.

IIRC you can only get the tmo cel fi for free if you are currently on a specific plan tier and are willing to extend your contract for another two years. I did it because I just upgraded with my Sensation a couple of years ago.
I don't remember if there was a specific number to call, but I think I called the normal 611 from my cell.
You have to live in a single family house, without sharing a wall, and also you must have at least one bar of 3g right outside the house to bring the signal inside with the booster. I think there was a couple of other requirements best answered by the tmo reps when you call up.
GL
I don't know about the tmo sinal boosters but I bought this http://m.bestbuy.com/m/e/product/detail.jsp?skuId=9522493&pid=1218138268758 from best buy because my house had zero signal inside. I switched from sprint and they had given me an airrave. As another poster has already pointed out the range is somewhat limited however without it I had no signal, just the hollow signal bars. It does give me coverage in my house but there are still a couple spots where I'll drop a call. I do have a small house though. Overall I'm happy with my purchase but the unit is a little pricey and can be tricky to set up(mine is on the roof on an old antenna pole for broadcast TV). It does work though and I am on tmo monthly 4g. Hope that helps anyone considering this.

Its on the TMobile site that the boosters are only for contract plans and you have to sign a new 2 year agreement to get one. It's also not yours to keep, your just renting it and you have to give it back to TMo when your done with them. And at $500 these things ain't cheap. I went to Best Buy and the one they said that would work that they had was $300, Walmart has one for $200 with so so reviews, an xbooster, I'll just move on for that kind price. So I ordered a StraightTalk micro sim and I'm going to see if I can get a better signal using AT&T towers. I'm only getting one bar on a good day on TMo at home and most of the places I go I get no signal at all. This is the reason I dropped them 10 years ago and it hasn't gotten any better.
I own the T-mobile cel-fi unit and can tell you that the product works perfectly. A great device. It only supports the AWS spectrum (1700/2100) and does not support the new refarmed 1900 3/4G spectrum used for iPhone and AT&T phones.
Fortunately for N4 users, it supports the AWS spectrum so the repeater will provide boosted coverage.
It does not support the 2G spectrum... Just a point to make.

All I need is voice coverage indoor. Do you know that T-Mobile is changing their voice band? Will this unit boost voice coverage for future phones?
After doing some research, it looks like the Cel-Fi RS1 Tmobile (~$130 only Ebay) only relays HSPA signal. Which I guess only devices with 1700 AWS band can get signal boosted.
I bought the RS1 T-Mobile from eBay and they work on Nexus 4 but not on my brothers' iPhone 4 and international Note 2.
For comparison, the Cel-Fi RS2 (~$550 retail) can boost many signals: 1900 PCS, 1700/2100 AWS.

You don't select a tower they just amplify whatever signal they receive. And unfortunately with these you seem to get what you pay for, the cheaper ones (around $100) don't work well. Even with the higher priced ones its hit or miss, people seem to have better luck if they follow the directions completely and put the antenna up on the roof. Best reviews I saw were for T-Mobiles CellFi but it costs $500 and only works with TMobile. Generic ones run around $300 and even then if your signal is too weak none of these things will work to boost it. Best option is to buy one from a Big Box store like Walmart or Best Buy so that you can return it without a hassle if it doesn't work. Or switch to a service which has better coverage, which is what I did.
I have solavei! And my phone doesnt work at my house either! I bought the T-Mobile cel-fi on eBay for about $100 and it works great! (Solavei runs on T-Mobile network)
Whoa, I didn't realize Walmart carried them.
