Backlight works fine. Have you checked your settings in > start > settings > system > power. If not in here, should be in settings tab > sound & display > backlight
Is there a way to enable Ambient display on the mate 8 or something similar so when I receive a notification, the screen will light up itself?
Also the notification light led is very dim, hardly noticeable compared to samsung devices.
On the dimness issue, have you tried turning off the auto brightness feature in your shortcuts pulldown?
Think for yourself. Question authority.

I use ZUI Locker to get lock screen notifications. Echo is also good. The screen lights up on notification and the duration can be specified.
settings --> screen lock & passwords --> notification turn on screen

correct, I discovered it but weird that it only works with certain lock screen themes and not with all, you must select the theme with (magazine)
FYI I installed xposed with both gravitybox and the ambient display module. Neither works.
Like we enabled camera2 api and debloated apps. Is there anyway to enable Ambient display features.

Even if we could we shouldn't do that. It's a LCD panel the back light will be always on and will eat as much battery as in use.

ambient display is not always on display
Display turn on only when noyification arrives or we lift the device
There is a quick setting app
Which adds quick setting tile of ambiemt display after giving adb permissions
I tried that
It shows ambient display on
But ambient display does not really work

You can ask a resurrection or lineage developer for a flash able zip to enable it.
Use app glance plus available in android play store.

The auto brightness setting on this phone is not ideal inside and it's a nightmare outside. Basically, it has left me blind a couple of times by turning the brightness way off to the point where I can't even find the brightness setting. I'm new to LG so I don't know but is there a way of customizing or graduating the auto brightness setting?

Go to your settings app, click on the Display tab, and scroll until you find the brightness slider

That's just changing brightness and that setting is available in the notification bar too (like auto brightness is). I want to graduate/customize the auto brightness setting to (hopefully) eliminate those wild swings.
I know GravityBox, an Xposed framework module (which sadly doesn't work with Pie but you can use GravityBox with EdXposed) offers to change/set minimum brightness so you can set it higher and so the changes made by auto brightness are not that extreme. I wanted to do that but was too much work and gave up.

Yeah, I forgot about that. I might try it out in the future but since I downgraded to Oreo I don't find it as necessary anymore since auto brightness behaves more reasonably. The Oreo firmware is more stable than the Pie firmware in many respects. I started out with the Pie firmware so I didn't expect that.

On V30 last Oreo is also more stable than Pie.
The AOD of oneplus is very ridiculous and i dont know why they didnt include the same one of Color OS Here , its almost non customizable and very boring looking , and the dialer is good but the vibration when i answer and end calls is very weak which annoys me so much , so any ideas?
As i said in your other post. I think you have the wrong software firmware.
You should check your software version. It has to be at least C.16.

Mine is C20 and this is how AOD settings look , i cant put a pic from gallery as AOD pic (canvas isnt what i want) like i used to do on find x2 pro , and the notification icons appear white color on AOD instead of colorful icons on Find X2 pro , thats why i want Color os 12 AOD instead of OOS's AOD
