[Q] installing custom ROM on G2 [iPhone Refugee Thread]

Hello fellow XDA'ers,
I recently purchased the LG G2 and this is my first android phone. I'm coming from an iPhone 5 (for a multitude of reasons that are not applicable to this thread). I wanted to start this thread for people like myself who have no idea on how to install a ROM on an android device. There are various ROMs being released (verizon and ATT) and I would love a general walk through on how to install. Can anyone experienced point me in the right direction or offer any advice? Thanks in advance!

There aren't really any custom ROMs out for the G2 yet, just a couple of debloated ROMs (stock, plus root and minus carrier bloatware). Better ROMs will come, but it will be a little while. The G2 is just too new right now to have much out for it.
For a beginner, a few things you should keep in mind before rooting or installing a custom ROM:
* Be absolutely sure that what you're doing will work on your device before you do it. For instance, don't install a recovery image for an AT&T phone on a Verizon phone, unless you want to turn it into a paperweight.
* Read instructions carefully before you do anything. You should at least have some idea of what you're doing, so that in case something goes wrong, you'll at least have a chance of recovering. Don't just blindly follow instructions and hope you don't brick your phone.
* This *will* void your phone's warranty. If your phone dies after doing this (whether it's related to this or not), and you try to do a warranty exchange, they'll respond with something that is the same in English, Italian, and Spanish -- "No." On a related note, you are taking some risk by doing this. You could possibly mess up your phone. You could do things right, and an over-the-air update could conflict with what you've done and then mess up your phone. This is a risk you assume, not the developers of whatever you're trying to do.
* These forums, as well as #lg-g2, are for help. If you're not sure about something, ask. It's better to ask than to lose $600 because you incorrectly assumed that something would work.
Overall, rooting and ROMming your phone does give you more control. Just know what you're getting into.

There is risk involved yes, but it doesn't just straight up void your warranty in every situation. Depending on the carrier you are with and their RMA process you can get a perfect replacement with no hassle every time, and the carriers that do give trouble still have a small chance of going ahead with a replacement anyway depending on the tech you get. Many times for certain hardware issues it wont matter if you are rooted or not and you can still get a replacement as well. But choosing to unlock your device and do custom software for it you do have to accept responsibility that you could do something to break you device and that is your fault, not the manufacturer.

As for specific instruction, I cant really help much there. The instructions didn't really work well for me in the TWRP thread on XDA for installing, as there is nothing available when using Goo Manager, despite what that retarded thread says. I found better info on Rootz Wiki through a Google search on what to do, and even that was a bit wrong and I had to use some common sense to do things the right way. That common sense only comes from knowing how to use the command line and knowing how ADB commands work though, someone new to the process wont know that for themselves.
Looking over this thread for the newest info it looks like pretty much everything in this video should be correct and the download link for installing root should have everything you need:

That gets root access on your device. You may or may not even want to do that. That installs root into your ROM you are currently running (stock), but you want to install a custom ROM and your custom one probably already is rooted to begin with. What you most likely want to do is just go straight to installing the drivers to connect your phone properly and use ADB to send ("push") files to your phone, then use something called "Loki" to bypass the locked bootloader and flash a custom recover to your phone. From there you can install ROMs perfectly easily. You can follow this guide in the link, but it doesnt give you links to the phone and ADB drivers you will need:

Right now there is not really anything but Clean ROM available, which is the stock OS that has a bunch of the "bloated" and unnecessary LG and ATT system apps un-installed. It cleans things up a lot and gives you a much better experience. In the future hopefully we will see some AOSP based ROMs that have a lot of the good features like "knock on", and those ROMs will be best since they dont have any of the bloat that the LG ROM has, and the AOSP based stuff gets a lot better mods to them and offers far better customization and tweaking.

I have an AT&T G2 so I would be installing the Clean ROM posted in the developers section. I would love the opportunity to debloat the phone and it seems like this is the best option currently. Enigma, are you saying that the knock on and off feature does not work with this ROM?

Put your phone in USB debugging mode under developer tools...hook up the micro usb to your phone and move the zipped ROM to the root of your internal phone storage.

Or enable wireless storage via the notification drop down, you can now approach your device via Wi-Fi lan and upload whatever (it makes your device into a network drive)

I have questions about Samsung Galaxy J series, specifically the J3 Virgin Mobile

I have a few questions for anyone familiar with the Samsung Galaxy J series, specifically the J3. I have virgin mobile, and after a long time suffering with their HTC Desire 510, I want to upgrade, and not wanting to spend $400 on a galaxy S5 , the J3 seems the next best phone to get. However, as I've grown used to having a rooted phone and customizing my phone as much as I want, etc, I want to make sure my next phone can be rooted, and has support for custom ROM's, etc.
The main thing that could help me with my decision would be some guidance as to whether other versions, the J2, J5, J7, etc, that are present here would be potentially compatible with the J3, or if I'm out of luck and should consider other options if rooting is a necessity for me.
Any help is greatly appreciated!

I'm using j5 and it took me like 15 minutes of reading and about an hour /including downloading and setting up all the things /for the root.
I just want to say that you would need to be prepared to wait until someone make a custom Rom for it.

Thats what I was thinking. I figure that rooting it (hopefully) is similar to the other J series. As long as its rooted, wouldn't I be able to (even w/o custom rom) debloat/customize/etc it with various root tools, apps2sd, etc? Or are those dependent on having a custom rom? On the only phone I've rooted so far (htc desire 510) I didn't really spend any time with stock rom when I rooted, instead immediately flashing Nonsense rom, so I'm not sure what limitations keeping stock rom comes with when rooted.

I'm not really familiar with the device. As I said before I have a j5. According to the applications that you mentioned I think that it would be possible to get and install them. But rooting isn't quantum mechanics. There are some apps that you could easily install on almost any device and get the root privileges. For example kingroot I am sure you can find others. I usually root my devices trough pc.I recommend you to take some time before jumping on the first option that comes up as a possible solution.
According to changing the stock Rom. I don't known how developed is that treat so.. Again read here and there about it.

I dont think permanent root is going to be possible until a working twrp is made so that you can flash supersu. I know that sux, I wanted to get one for my wife because she broke the screen on her vm s3. But without root and the ability to get unlimited hotspot... nope. I asked a dev ( lrs121) if he would port twrp to it. He said he would try if I had the phone and could get him the necessary files from it. Look in the sprint s3 section under twrp for virgin and boost s3. He is a great dev.

Sorry i was on the phone while traveling. I`ve mistaken that it was about the j5 ( like mine device) and for that especially i had tried 2 working options up to now for twrp. but i`m pretty sure you can find tutorials or you can even simply DL the twrp /for example/ 3 install it as an apk and than you if it stuck just would need to DL odin for your PC and than strictly follow the steps / install /unzip odin, connect device , go into DL mode and flash it with the stock ROM which you can find in sammobile /.com i guess/ ?

I have yet another variant the J320w8, canadian GSM variant presumably. Which recovery will work with this guy?? I've tried the j3lte TWRP with no luck booting it. Then J320H which was a fail. now i've to find firmware to recover from the hanging up on logo on boot...i welcome suggestions guys

A2017G Japan - Lots of Questions...

Okay, so I used to love rooting my phones, but I mostly dealt with flagship phones in the US which made rooting and flashing a cakewalk. I understand some of the nitty gritty, so when I got my first phone in Japan, I was super excited about rooting it. But after reading this forum for hours, I have so many questions...my phone build is A2017G JPV1.1.0B03.
I read this but this mostly focused on using an update on this phone.

1. If that thread is correct, that means I technically just have the European version of the phone with Japanese modems installed. Is that correct?
2. Also, does that mean (if I were not to root the phone) I would need to install a European Axon 7 Oreo update for it to actually work on the phone? Would the US version fail?
3. I can't seem to find the modem for my phone. I can upload some screenshots later but can someone clarify if I'm right that it's a "B03" or am I looking at the wrong information?
4. There is no Oreo release for Japan, so does that mean I can't flash an Oreo ROM because there won't be any modems for this?
That's all for now, but I'm sure I have a lot of follow-up questions to your answers. Your help is greatly appreciated.

Unlock bootloader, install twrp, instal "G" model bootstack, instal any custom rom, then flash "G" modem in twrp, reboot. No matter where you device are from, the model matters. If its "G", its a european version and its only what you need to know. If you want stock oreo and didnt recieve through OTA, download the update in ZTE website for your "G" version, put it in a sdcard then reboot your phone to recovey then select "install update from sd card" option.

Basically, the model of the phone is printed on the back of it down the bottom.
A2017 is China version.
A2017U is US version.
A2017G is everything else (Global) version. It's not actually euro.
The modem software has to be for the actual model of the phone, not your location in the world.
Don't correlate software versions between Chinese, US and Global, they use different numbering systems. Only concentrate on what is for your model.
The rest of this pertains to A2017G as that is what you seem to have.
They start at B01 (usually pre-release beta) and go up from there but each new Android version eg Nougat, Oreo etc means the numbers restart from B01.
Nougat B03 has nothing to do with Oreo B03.
Look at the software version, A2017GV1.1.0 is very old, the 1.1.0 is the key to the Android version. 1.2.0 is Nougat, 1.3.0 is Oreo so you have Marshmallow at 1.1.0 and B03 release from that Android generation.

I'm so used to dealing with multiple modems for the same model of phone in the US (between the major carriers and stuff) that I was overthinking it.
Thanks a ton. That simplifies things so much...and also makes me wonder why updating never occurred for the Japanese release. It's not like there isn't language support for newer versions of Android, but maybe not for the MIUI? I need to be more careful choosing my next phone then, though probably it should be an AOSP phone like the Zenfone or Pixel.
Guess I have my work cut out for me this weekend. Time to run a giant backup and start rooting. Thanks again for all your help. I like this phone (though I often accidentally hover/touch the home button when typing, and I hope there's a sensitivity fix for that :laugh so I want it to last for a while before I get my next one.

It's still a good phone, I look at new phones and think, hmmm, nice, but what will I gain on a daily basis? Nothing more to be honest. The A7 has enough power for me still. The one thing I could really use would be a higher capacity battery. Was looking at Huawei phones but now, well.....
For updates, they had issues with OTA and reverted to only releasing for a whole ROM download for update from SD card.
I personally won't apply an OTA for mine even now at Oreo. Must be a whole ROM to flash with the updater. That's all I've done with it since purchase and it works great still. A lot of people seem to have all sorts of weird issues after applying OTA updates.

Sweet. As someone with some experience with this stuff, do you have any tips or tricks I should know moving forward? I'm going to try rooting it tonight.

7.1.1 yeah, Nougat. That doesn't make sense from your first post.
Was it used when you got it or new? Have you checked the model from what's on the back of it, not what software says it is?
I keep mine stock, can't advise on rooting etc. I use it with personal and work SIMs and it has to pass requirements including encryption to run Microsoft InTune and our company portal and use it in work mode. Bootloader hasn't even been unlocked. The most I did was uninstall some built in user apps through ADB.

I also have a 2017G bought in Japan. I unlocked it and worked on it based on this forum, and I can say that it behaves as any other 2017G. I am not interested to use the stock ROM, but yes, I remember that it was on Nougat version when I received it.

I have the A2017 (china). As above, update your phone to the region. As a result of having a china variant, i think i miss out on band 28 and some other essential bands for reception. I get 3G/low 4G connections and a lot of bad reception areas (countryside living). Its no problem.
Currently running AEX 6.5. Search some of my recent posts for how I updated to this version.

The phone was brand new when i bought it. It was on a "super sale" though, going for 12,000 yen (like 110 bucks or so). I was thinking about getting a Zenfone but if I could save the money and make it to at least Oreo I'd be happy. Been having issues with the battery whenever I use more than 2 apps at a time.
If you could link an unlocking guide and a ROM that worked well for you that would be great. I have one I plan to use but I'm always open to suggestions. After the first time, I'll feel more comfortable with it. In the worst case scenario that I brick this thing I'll just buy the Zenfone early :laugh:

The Zenphone 6 is looking a viable buy now.
My Axon 7 is still good so not really looking but I did just get a new Axon 7 Mini for use as a media player. It still has AMOLED screen, stereo speakers, headphone jack, DAC for the jack etc. No hi res bluetooth though. Cost me AU$149 new in box from retail store. Bargain! How much is a dedicated music player which is crap at movies or just cant do them?
Chucked my 128Gb SD in. Sounds good playing through the car hifi, lower 3.5 jack output matches HU aux in impedance better than Axon 7 which can overload the input at high volume. Very balanced and clean sound.

Give yourself 2 hours to get the job done, and there are a few guides on youtube for unlocking the bootloader and installing TWRP (if you havent already).
If you cannot root the phone by your own discovery, I dont think you'll be up for installing a custom rom. It takes a degree of risk, and research. Being successful in the attempt is worth it.
Do a backup in TWRP, or get titanium backup pro (paid) to do a backup of your essential apps and data (email, messaging, google authenticator etc). I think titanium backup is better, especially if you are going from android 7 to 8 or 9 and different twrp versions.
If your phone boots following Oki's guide (Option 1), then scroll to the last page to my post about taking it to android 9 on AEX.
As your phone is A2017G, search for the necessary files in the forum corresponding to your modem. There are plenty of links.

I bought it at Rakuten Mobile. There was a super sale and it was like 80% off, lol.
I tried using the guide over the last couple of days and no matter what I've done, I can't seem to get to recovery after doing the flashing (step 9). I was able to flash a stock image back on, but then when I try again it's the same results. I'm at a loss as to why but...there's another guide using the Axon7Tool.

The downside is that I work two jobs tomorrow so I won't have time to try this new one out but I think I downloaded everything already. This is kinda frustrating though..
-EDIT: I used the unbricking guide to EDL flash the B10 Nougat and it is a different experience than what I had before...geez, seems the Japanese version was severely neglected. If I run into problems with the other guide I feel comfortable EDL flashing Oreo. Really appreciate the support guys, let me know what you think. Before I started this, my battery was lasting barely 8 hours with only LINE and Chrome being the main background apps...

Not sure it's relevant here any more but I have a 128 Gb A2017 which I put a G build on, after being a bit miffed at some of the stuff (mostly Google based) I couldn't use on the original. I really don't know that much about what I'm doing but it all seems to work OK, though an old battery life problem has returned so I'm going to be asking elsewhere (probably) about how to replace the modem software. I also have a bit of a problem with GPS intermittently not working (going on and offline) but I suspect that's probably a hardware problem rather than the build. Mine is on

you can't. There are 3 modem variants by region (US, china, global) and many versions for each, but they are not interchangeable and flashing another has already wiped some IMEIs long ago (doesn't always happen though)

What do with my Tab 10 X704A? Root? TWRP? ROM? HELP!

I've read through most of the different threads and I am really confused about what's possible with my Lenovo Tab 10 X704A version. Ideally I'd like ROOT AND something that will let me use this thing on T-Mobile (it is carrier locked to ATT and ATT has completely abandoned it). Even if I can't get it to work on TMO, improving everything else would be helpful.
It would also be nice to kill off the ATT garbage and have a shiny new ROM as well.
I downloaded the TWRP that's supposed to work with this version but I have no idea what that actually does for me. Maybe I don't need ROOT if a new ROM takes out the junk software.
Anyway, if someone could sort of guide me on what's best here. I don't necessarily need help on how to do stuff, just need guidance on WHAT to do and it what order.

Google Android 9 Rom to ATT Android 10 Stock Rom

So back when I got my phone in Feb 2020, I did what most people do when they have a new device, update it. After some googling, I found plenty of threads about how great the google version of Android 9 is for the v35. Removing the ATT bloatware was my main reason for flashing to it.
I've read on a few different websites that if you flashed to the stock google android 9 rom, that there is no way to flash back to the ATT roms, or upgrade to the current android 10 att rom. My phone is unlocked and is of course, the ATT version.
Model: LM-V350AWM (doesn't show that it's google I guess)
Hardware: Rev 1.0
I have not bought an ATT sim card or gotten there service to upgrade because of what I read. Is it possible to flash back to stock ATT ROMs or to OTA with an ATT sim if I flashed to the google version? Anyway to go back (stock 8.0 even)? I really don't want to switch to a new phone since I got this baby for 190$ and finding something equally good or better in this price range is not happening. I'd appreciate any information you guys have on this.

It isn't clear from your note what you want to do. If your objective is to get to A10, I highly recommend following cloud's guide to localize the Korean A10 rom. That would require unlocking the bootloader. Everything on that rom works at least for me and my use cases. Browse around here in the v35 forums and you'll find the threads you need.
If your aim is simply stock A10 with ATT, there is one option. Someone posted a partition dump. You could try writing partitions one-by-one usind qfil. I haven't seem any reports of anyone doing that....

Okay. So is it confirmed that if you flashed the stock Google Fi Android 9 onto your att phone that you can't flash back to atts? Different partition sizes end up bricking the phone? I can't find any att kdz anyway. Not even the older android 8. I know att $oesnt release theirs but plenty of folks normally upload their stock kdz for the community.
Really confused with how dead the LG V30/35 community has been since day 1. I remember when I was learning how to root my viewsonic g tablet and galaxy 3 (2011-12) the forums were bursting with people and stock kdz loaded everywhere. And 30 different roms were being worked on for one device. I think the galaxy S5 community is still more active than this one. Smh
Thank you for the reply. I'll look for the post you mentioned. I haven't worked or played around with modifying android in 10 years. Only thing I've done is a quick flash of googlefi kdz back in 2020 which was brainless. Just looking at the tutorials to root this phone seems daunting now lol.

AT&T does not release kdz. Don't know why you think that needs to be confirmed. Partitions for AT&T A10 have been dumped. You can write them one by one by qfil.
As to why V30/V35 development is dead, a huge factor is that lg exited the mobile phone market. LG, despite making good hardware, was also not developer friendly. The V35 is 4 years old.
As for rooting a V35, just follow the instructions if that's what you want or move to newer models with 5G, more memory, and greater battery capacity.
I am still rocking my V35 Fi phone happily.

I thought people who were more tech savvy than me could pull a stock KDZ off their own ATT phone. That's what people did in the past anyway (I believe).
The phone is still great and I'm glad you are happy with it. I just wanted android 10 on my phone. Stock. English. I might try the Korean route since I'm less likely to brick my phone. Who knows, we'll find out. Thanks for the replys.

The localized A10 Korean rom has been fantastic for me. Everything works.
Make sure you backup ftm and efs partitions before starting. You will lose the S/N but it is easily restored. If you are in US, I suggest you flash the localized OP partition. Links are in the localization thread started by cloud.
