S10+ Notifications - Samsung Galaxy S10+ Questions & Answers

How are we supposed to get notifications on this phone? I've noticed that virtually nothing wakes up the lock screen. Many apps (messenger for example)don't even activate the edge lighting. Is there anything outside of a 3rd party app that can wake the screen to notify? What was Samsung's plan with this?

This may help.

I guess my goal was to find out how Samsung intended for this phone to notify us of messages from 3rd party applications that don't trigger the AOD display or edge lighting (like FB messenger) without having to add a notification application.

It's an effin joke init. That if you have AOD off then one never sees notifications.

I have notifications, don't know what your talking about? I even have it setup for popup notifications. Working better than the mate 20pro ever did.

Yes, you can add a 3rd party solution for a lot of issues.... but what solution did Samsung provide stock with this phone?

Ok, so again....you have to make system modifications using some kind of outside software.... You are still missing the point of this thread.

No it's about notifications. I have full notifications without 3rd party necessary intervention. And when a notification comes in I have edge lightning with the bubbles or messages flashed for 5 seconds. But the whole screen does not light up. So you obviously don't have your configuration right.

[APP] [>=4.0] Recurrent Notifications for any App

This app allows to configure recurrent notifications for each app that is using the standard Android notifications subsystem.
For each app, you can configure the ringtone, vibration, led color, number of repeats and interval of each notification.
Notifications are automatically cancelled if the monitorized app removes the notification.
Also, for each monitorized app you can configure if you like to be notified when a ongoing or clearable notification was created or if the created notification contains a specific text.
This app requires a special permission that needs to be activated after the install (go app settings in order to activate it).
Please, contact if you have troubles or questions.
Market Link: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.ryosoftware.notificationsmanager
Compatibility:
Android 4.3 and higher for the standard notifications controller
Android 4.0 to 4.2 for the legacy notifications controller (based on accessibility permissions)
Thank you, been looking for something like this that actually works for a long time, just downloaded it, and all is working flawlessly at the moment, using the custom notification on my Yahoo email app, I can use what sound I desire now.
Thanks very much, will be upgrading to the paid version very soon.
Just a quick question though, is there anyway to disable the app notification icon in the status bar.
Thanks

Hi,
Thanks for your comments. Appreciate it!
You can disable the statusbar icon clicking settings and checking the "Statusbar icon" preference
Thanks again
Your welcome, I have tried what you suggested to turn off the notification icon, but for some reason it is still visible, not a problem though, it soon disappears after I have read my notification.
Thanks again

Thanks, updated app about an hour ago, still works great, but having selected no icon in the settings, when i get an email, i get no notification sound now, it still works so well i have updated to the paid version of the app.
Again not to worry, it works brilliantly if i have to put up with that icon i will as the icon only pops up when i receive an email, then disappears after i have read it.
Thanks again.

App is nice. Has a lot of potential.
Before bying the pro version:
I have set GMail as the app to work with recurrent notification.
When I set the "Recurrent notification" to silent sound I still hear the sound of the "original notification" as normal. Any workaround ?
Never gave it a chance due to app permissions
I'm worried about the permissions this app wants to be allowed. All text apart from passwords? Still enables it to collect credit card details etc.
Nah ah.
Sorry but I won't be buying this until i can test with more then 1 app (2 would be enough to test good). Also would be nice to be able to change the blinking speed of the led its too fast for my taste.

Sorry, this app uses the standard led API, that refers to the standard phone led. I think standard phone led is the front led. Sorry
This app has no effects in battery life. Service is sleeping all the time except when a notification is started.

You need to set silent also for notification in gmail.
This app develops notification and recurrent notification for any app, but you need to silent the stock notification in order to don't have double notifications.

Explain for permissions
RECEIVE_BOOT_COMPLETED: In order to receive boot completed at startup and initiate the service
VIBRATE: To allow vibrate
INTERNET and ACCESS_NETWORK_STATE: Required by Google Ads
BILLING: To manage PRO version
READ_PHONE_STATE: Get events when phone call started and ended and silent notifications when in phone call
BIND_NOTIFICATION_LISTENER_SERVICE: (Jelly Bean and Kitkat) To receive notifications and interactuate
BIND_ACCESSIBILITY_SERVICE: (Ice Cream Sandwich) To receive notifications and interactuate
You refer to a standard Android message that is showed when you enable accessibility permissions to any, but this app is not collecting none, and the Inet access is only used
by the Ads library (by Google). We are not collecting or sharing with none.

Sure. We can add vibration patterns in next release.
Sorry, more than one app is a PRO feature.
I wanted to disable vibration and sound for Viber and also set the LED to purple on my Oppo Find 5, but for some reason it did not do anything.
Any ideas?

Hi,
Have you entered "Notifications Manager" app settings and activated accessibility access or notifications access?
Is needed to activate the app.
Also, you need to disable notifications in Viber and enable notifications for Viber in the Notifications Manager app.
(I assume Viber is generating a statusbar notification when a call)
Thanks

Ohh, now I feel dumb Thanks, it works like a charm!
Seems a good app I can't wait till I try it
Sent from my EMVIRUS Sensation XL ! using XDA Premium 4 mobile app
Good looks! Gonna be keeping up with the progress of this app.
I've tried to use it on galaxy s4 with 4.4.2 and it does work for notification but LED does not work. I've tried with different colors but only use default one.
Any advice?
I cant seem to get this to work with a Nexus 5
It's too bad you can only test it with one app. What if multiple apps cause a conflict somewhere, how would we be able to identify that without purchasing the app? The trial version should be the full product with a time limit of like a week or something. Don't be stingy. =/

Samsung Stock Lollipop Notifications toggle?

This is related to our Samsung lollypop stock: is there anyway in the settings, or maybe a 3rd party app to disable / enable notifications popping up?

Thank you! But I've been playing with these settings and the head up notifications (Whatsapp, Telegram) continue to appear.
I'm not referring to notifications in the lockscreen but when operating with the phone, i.e: reading the email or watching a video.
I just need a comfortable toggle to disable / enable head up notifications.
Edit: I just found this 3rd party app that blocks the notifications. It works: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.aboutmycode.NotificationsOff

Yes, you're right but that's quite uncomfortable as apps have to be blocked one by one. I just needed a toggle to block them all in one touch and I cannot find it in Android Lollipop. This app can block / unblock them with a widget.

Getting rid of heads up notifications while phone is unlocked?

I'm not sure if this is an LG or Nougat thing, but it's seriously annoying. Whenever I use the phone and I get a notification of any kind, it pops down from the status bar (why can't it just go straight to the 2nd screen???) and persists for a few seconds unless I action it or dismiss.
Is there a setting within notifications or apps themselves to make them go straight to the 2nd screen?

Mine pop into the 2nd screen. What app is causing it? I know Textra was doing that until I disabled the pop up notification

Not silencing anything, I just adjusted the Textra to not show the floating reply.
I don't use Whatsapp so can't speak to any settings in there and my Snapchat I have set to Vibrate only(turned wake screen off). Don't get a lot of Snapchat chats so never noticed if its a pop up notification or not

Weird - I found out that "Silencing" notifications is the only way to get them to not pop up... but then I don't get a vibrate.
System UI is a "hidden" feature of Nougat that LG decided to axe, which is extremely frustrating because it has the EXACT functionality someone needs to have full control over their notifications.

Yeah I want that system UI because in it you can do percent in battery notification so it's not next to the battery
It actually started with Marshmallow and was pretty popular due to the simple tweaks it can do that everyone wants. Unfortunately it seems to be more of a carrier issue with disabling it. Regardless, disabling peeking should be a basic option in settings from day 1. Not a super hidden feature in Andriod M and a above with no guarantee of staying. Textra is nice enough to have its own setting. Why other apps do not is baffling.
Someone finding a way to get to the System UI tuner settings would be amazing. As it is now there doesn't seem to be a way to turn off ONLY peeking/heads up notifications that I have been able to find. Maybe HeadsOff will be compatible with N before long.
I can't reply to any notifications in my notifications panel. How do I turn it back on?

AOD not really that much better

Still not getting all my notifications to appear on AOD. I've only seen texts, missed call, and weirdly and Imgur notification on there. No Gmail, Snapchat, or Google Voice. I thought this was updated like the Note 7 to show every notification icon in AOD now. Are there some settings I'm missing? Or is there a better alternative to the native AOD?

It works for me. Shows notifications for every app and I didn't change any settings. Did you simply take an OTA or did you do a clean update?

Yes, I remember getting them with all, except hangouts because I don't use it. I actually turned the AOD off because I was getting battery drain since nougat, but that didn't help

Make sure in Settings - Notifications, you have the apps turn ON that you want to get notifications for.
I have noticed in the 2 factory resets I've done since the Android 7.0 update, Notification access is defaulted OFF for Always On Display. To check this, make sure AOD is turned on first, then go into Settings - Lock screen and security - Other security settings - Notification access to make sure AOD is set to ON.

I was actually able to figure it out last night. I had some wonky settings in Settings > Lock Screen & Security > Notifications on Lock Screen. Had a lot of random apps with notifications on like Barcode Scanner, a Ruler app, and Rear-Facing Camera. But apps that you would expect to get notifications from like Gmail, Sanpchat, and Hangouts were un-checked. Kind of a misleading name for these toggles as they are not controlling whats on the lock screen, but on the off screen.

App optimisation?

If you go into your battery stats there is an option to select certain apps you want to optimise/ put to sleep! Does anyone know if you will still receive notifications from apps that are in sleep mode? Iam guessing notifications would NOT come through?
I had this problem on my S7 edge a few months ago : I didn't recieve Whatsapp notifications when this app was "optimised" in battery settings.
However, I don't have the problem on my S8

I just re-check, and yes. I recieve my whatsapp notification on my S8, and yet the app is in the list of the optimized apps. It goes in sleep mode after 3 days of inactivity like every other app, and yet I still recieve notification at the right time.
I can't explain how, because on my former S7 edge I had to remove it from the list of the optimized apps to keep recieving notifications. Maybe Touchwiz made progress
Btw, I'm using SM-G950F (AQDD)

It depends on how an app triggers notifications. Some apps still use non-push notifications that require them to refresh in the background. Most apps, however, receive notifications via a listening port that's built into Android. Consequently, background app refresh can be disabled and the separate notification service still functions.
Just because your Whats app is under the list for optimisation, doesn't mean is actually optimised as yet. For an app to be optimised and put to sleep, has to be not used 3 days in a row. Every time you check it, you restart the process.
