Unfortunately no, you can not root your phone without unlocking your bootloader.

I have an Arc s using the 3 branded 4.0.4 (4.1.L.0.8) firmware and have wanted to root and unlock the boot loader for ages. The problem is that I don't know the best method of unlocking the boot loader and root the phone. Was wondering if someone could send me in the right direction or give me a good tutorial on how to go from the very basic no root stock firmware to having the phone rooted with the boot loader unlocked would be great if someone if able to help me.

Now that's out of the way, read the stickys, although you seem to have new F.W so it might be rootable using the existing methods or you may need to wait until someone figures out how to root it. Bootloader unlocking is the same regardless of firmware.

I have (nearly) the same phone, also on 3 (rant to follow!). In short, your bootloader cannot be unlocked without paying someone to do it for you (around £15). You can still use custom roms (via CWM recovery) without an unlocked bootloader, so IMHO not really worth it. I was waiting for a former member of XDA to unlock my phone for around a week (we weren't free at the same times, etc) and in the end didn't bother.
There may be other ways, but personally I used this: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1683189, but for ease of use, the toolkit from here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1601038. Bascially, you need to flash the 4.0.3 kernel using flashtool, use DooMLoRD's kit to root the device, then flash the 4.0.4 kernel back again. After that, you can get CWM recovery from the market, and use that with any rom suitable for locked bootloaders.
BTW, 3 are absolutely the WORST network in the UK, just got off the phone arguing with them about them cutting all 2G services (i now realise why my reception has been so bad for the past 6 months!) while also raising the price of my packages, all without warning.

thanks! just the reply I was looking for . I have had no problems on 3, the service and the network has been great for me. I just hate that I am not able to use Sony's method of unlocking the boot loader due to being on 3's branded firmware >.<

I have 3 also in Sweden, but Alejanrissimo (a guy in the forum) unlocked the bootloader for me remotely and now it is very good. I can flash ROM, kernel, get easy root etc.
I payed 19 US dollars over PayPal and after 10 minutes (with some paper clip operation stuff) my phone was unlocked, even the SIM was unlocked too. :good:
I can still use PCC and SEUS and the TrackID is also still there.
Guys just got my n4 few mins ago.. I don't actually want to unlock the bootloader yet, just root the stock that's it..
Actually my younger bro is gonna use it for sometime and he doesn't do all this, i just wanna root his phone so that he could use titanium later on for backing up and move to a different phone while i take over the n4.. Would unlock the bootloader then so i get a fully wiped phone..
Dev section is too big to search for this.. Can anyone just link me to the thread/tutorial for rooting the stock without unlocking bootloader ??

Someone please correct me if I'm wrong, but I don't think there's a way to root without unlocking the bootloader. If you just got the phone a few minutes ago, what's the harm in unlocking the bootloader? If you unlock it now, it will save you the hassle of wiping all the data from the phone in the future.
Also, just because you have an unlocked bootloader doesn't mean that you have to change ROMs or anything. You can always lock it later if you need to, but having an unlocked bootloader gives you a lot more freedom when it comes to rooting.

Hi I see you want to root to use titanium backup. If you don't want to unlock/root you could use this backup service called carbon. https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.koushikdutta.backup&hl=en
There is no way to root without unlocking the bootloader atm.
Just unlock with wuggs toolkit, then its as simple as an app from play store to lock/unlock. Geez, the urban legends of the horrors and sins of rooting, don't believe everything on the Internet.

Hey guys!
I just bought a Nexus 4 a couple days ago... you can imagine my desire to unlock the bootloader and root my phone, I think...
I do have one concern, though. My last phone was HTC One X. I unlocked it, of course, but relocking the bootloader kinda got me in trouble. When bootloader showed up on the screen it stated "RELOCKED" thus my warranty was void. I would like to know if such thing could happen with my Nexus4 device, since I wouldn't want to loose my 2-year warranty in case I decide to sell it somewhere along the way.

people said no(they said that if u do oem lock it would just lock normally) with nexus 4, i cant test because i cant flash new bootloader(my phone dont allow new bootloader since i flashed the one for lg og).
Edit, talked with my friend, and yea if u do oem relock it get back to factory normal, any1 will see what u did there(unless u have installed root or custom boot/recovery).

i don't have to permanent root for my phone since i have my phone from 2 months so. don't want to avoid warranty.
is that any possible method to root phone only for one time. after reboot root lost. is that any option for that please provide information.
Root only for one boot and after rebooting root gone. please provide information. Thank you !

No sadly i have never heard something like it
That is a no go. To root you need to unlock the bootloader which requires giving Motorola your phone's information. Just getting the code, regardless if you use it or not will be enough to void warranty.

LOL i see you are still on to it.... Why dont you relock the bootloader hahahhaha . Think about it. it is just a one time thing. I would have relocked it and unlocked the phone then do the process again and restore my backup . it should take less than 1 hour... 3 if someone is a noob
