Will using an External Harddrive via OTG break my Note 7 in the long run ? Or just drain my battery faster ? Currently it works just fine

I'm assuming it'll heat up faster or stress the other components ?
Usually, when I connect pendrives, I just plug them. But when I have to connect hard drives, I always use external power: 12v for big ones (wall), and my portable power bank for the 2.5" ones.
Please elaborate.

My Zenfone Max Pro M1 supports 2tb external HDD on its own but battery drains faster. I want to use Powerbank as external power supply. But my OTG Y cable isn't working that way. I want HDD to draw power from external supply only and not my smartphone. Is it possible to do that.
Could you describe how you do it ?

I solved it using a USB (3.0) hub (from Orico which has a dedicated micro USB 2.0 port for external power supply ) and a powerbank. Advantage being the mobile battery isn't being discharged as much in poweering the HDD if at all. Now no issue in reading from 4TB (2.5") ones. This is for Poco F1 (couldn't handle more than 1TB) but I see no reason it why it shouldn't work for other handsets as well. Curiously Redmi Note 3 and even the lowly Redmi 3s have zero issues powering even 4TB HDDs on their own. (I tried this method in Redmi 3s but the HDD LED keeps on blinking and isn't detected)
Edit: If your laptop supports USB Sleep and Charge (powering USB even when shutdown/hibernated) it will work as an alternative to a powerbank.

Hi, I am relatively new to digital 'prototyping' so USB protocols and almost everything digital is new to me.
The long and short of my question is, if I plugged a standard USB flash drive into an OTG adapter, and then plugged all that into a micro USB to standard USB (which I doubt actually exists) and plugged that combo into a PC, would I be able to access the flash drive? How exactly do OTG devices VS 'regular' USB devices work?
From the circuit schematics I've studied, it appears that the only difference between a standard USB and OTG interface is a bridge across pins 4 and 5. So how would this affect plugging said OTG device into a PC?

Yes/no.
The standard (full-size) USB A and B connectors only have 4 contacts and 4 conductors.
The ID pin (#4) is only on USB mini and micro connectors.
You need to signal your cell phone to go into host mode.
That means that the connector plugged directly into the cell phone has to have a grounded pin #4.
Pin #4 is never carried over the cable.
In short, you need an OTG adapter plugged into your cell phone.
Modding other parts of the cable or the USB device you are using won't do anything.
You can (as I have done) take a razor to the connector that plugs into your cell phone,
take the connector apart and solder a wire from pin #4 to ground.
After playing around with a few different cables and set ups I final have a Pi powered laptop with great battery life!

Raspberry Pi
Motorola Lapdock - I have the original for the Atrix but any with the micro HDMI and USB ports should work fine
Sdcard - I have a 8GB card but really what ever size you want
USB Male to Male Adapter - HERE
USB 2.0 A Female to Micro 5pin Female Cable - HERE
Micro HDMI male to female - HERE
HDMI Male to Micro HDMI Female Adapter - HERE
You will likely also want a case for your Pi, I have used this one HERE but feel free to use any case really.
To complete the laptop you might also want to use a Wifi usb card, I found this one HERE works very well out of the box.
---------- How to get it all working? ----------
The most important thing to remember is that the lapdock will not give power via the usb port until there is an HDMI connection, so the HDMI cable will need to be connected first.
All you need to do is plug it all together but once I have pictures sorted I shall post an actual step by step.

From a day or using it I have gotten about 10 hours, but the biggest downside to the set up is that the lapdock does not report its battery life via the usb port so you only get the 5 lights on the front of it for indication.
I plan to in the next few days do some actual battery tests (constant running of video etc) to see what it can make
According to Amazon it has 7 hours battery life

How can using that with a type C adaptor? You have to plug/unlug each time for a wireless charging? Or your phone has that 'tail' all the time?
Furthermore, the charging speed is really slow, charging via USB cable on OP2 is already slow enough

yes, I'm using MIUI type C adaptor for charging with other microUSB cables, so theoretically it will work

I've had a Galaxy Tab A 10.1 for over a year now and get the most use out of it by connecting a thumb drive via the usb connection (for viewing pdf files). It's worked great until a few days ago.
After connecting as usual there appeared a message at the bottom "something something disconnected" (the "something something" being I don't remember exactly what and the message disappeared before I could see) and now the usb/connection doesn't show up in the "My Files" window (just the "internal storage" and "sd" indicators, whereas before I got the additional thumb drive designation).
I've tried two different utg connectors, no good. I've checked the thumb drive in my pc, it's fine. I've tried connecting the tablet to my pc via the usb, it doesn't show up at all. I can still move files between my pc and the tablet via wifi but I want my usb connectivity back!! I suspect the connection the utg plugs into.
Also, (I'm not sure if this is a separate issue or related) battery recharge seems to take much longer ... is this a sign of the tablet getting old? I could understand if it was 3 years+ but 1 year??!!
Thanks for any help or ideas as how to fix this!

I'm assuming you are using an OTG cable to USB Drive or a micro USB drive right? In other words the part you plug into you Tab is a micro USB and not Type-C USB? If it is micro USB and not Type-C try this ... https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sGGdsMsK3VU. If it doesn't work the pins inside are probably damage and you need to replace the OTG cable or the drive, what ever you are using. If Type-C USB same thing. Needs replacing. Those pins ware out over time and use. Thats my best guess with out pics and further information.

Yes, I'm using a usb (to take the thumb drive) to micro usb connector. I suspect it's not a connector issue as I tried three separate connectors and none showed a connection to the tablet (i.e. the thumb drive did not show in the "My Files" page as it used to) ... all the pins on all 3 connectors look good, the fit into the tablet port is tight, no looseness. I've looked closer at the micro usb port on the tablet and I'm beginning to suspect that's the issue as a receiving contact on the outer edge seems to be damaged (possibly) ..

No Problem, I've never had a female Micro USB port go bad on me , but have heard of it happening. A good tug in the wrong direction I suppose could pull the solder connections apart or maybe even damage the innards. Is the Tablet taking a charge? I'm a little confused to actuality what part your referring too. Here is an image explaining what the different types of USB's I think you are using. Tell me what color circle you think is damaged. Or if you are using something else entirely different.

The "Disable USB Audio Routing" in developers option is set to OFF already.

Please check before buying. OnePlus 2 uses the very first USB C version and it's outdated (There are different versions of USB C, similar to USB A). Any OTG or headphones with USB C functionality won't work on OP2. Hope that solved your problem.

I'm not sure why, maybe because the OTG's version matches with the phone's. I have tried like 6-7 products and none of them seemed to work for me. The only way I could get it to work was by using a USB C to micro-USB converter and a normal OTG (not type C). But that's irrelevant, what matters is that type C bullets won't work.
I use the normal bullets with headphone jack.
