I have been off the forums for a couple years doing Phonlab work and a few days ago I was reading some threads and then I read this one and several people are in a qualcomm state 9008 and so I decided to help, and then I found out no files are available. So I need a brave volunteer to help us out by doing the following,You will receive credit,
1. It must be the model H790 16gb, if you have H791 or H790 32GB I will take those too but I have access for testing on the one requested H790 16GB
2. Do a full factory reset
3. Root and Install TWRP
4. Get a 16GB Flash drive or one you do not mind formatting
5. Take the flash drive put it in the phone format it to exfat and 16GB, once you have TWRP Installed go to storage and note the directory name of the flash drive I think it is usbdisk but if its different then usbdisk then replace usbdisk with the correct name then go to advanced connect with adb open a command prompt and type these commands
adb shell
su
dd if=/dev/block/mmcblk0 of=/storage/usbdisk/backup.img bs=512 count=30535646
The backup is 16GB then zip it up into a rar file and upload it and send me the download link I will do the rest, lets do 16GB First for the H790
Hi,
Do you need this to be done on a specific rom or when you say "full factory reset" you mean on the original google rom?

Yes we need stock firmware and after you root you can run the cmd line above
Mmm i just checked and since i bought mine in France where i live i think I probably have the H791 one, not the H790 version that you got in the US.
Would you still be interested anyway?
I can make an image backup of my current phone using TWRP then wipe everything, do what you need using my 32GB SD card and flash back my image, the problem is that i'm living in the countryside so my network speed is pretty awful and it's impossible for me to upload 16GB from my home using my poor xDSL line
But what i can do is next time i have to go to the city i can go to a cybercafe and upload it using their fiber line if no one else did it for you before.

Sorry, but I don't understand how you would like to fit a 16 GB partition into N5X memory, where only 16 GB is available?
N5X has no memory card slot.

And as noted by ze7zez, the phone has no expandable storage slot.
If there is an alternative way to do this, I can help!
I'm still looking for the files needed so that we can create flash files for this device please remember that the majority of these bricks are from the factory in poor manufacturing that is to say that when they balled the chip to the board the solder that was used wasn't good enough so as the phone heats up over time it causes cracks and pooling in those balls and it creates separation from the chip and the board in the cases where a actual soft bricked happened and is software related this is where we can help but I do need the files

its general info, since it isnt the actual guide to rooting.
Good find OP. Seems really straight forward. This will be my day 1 project.
Why was this moved to the dev section? Mods, there is already the ROOT thread, there was no need to move this. =\
I appreciate there are some differences, but why is the process more complex than the Acer A500. Al you do with there is:
1. Set as debug
2. Make sure an microsd is installed
3. Install the root apk
4. Run the apk
5. Reboots in five minutes and rooted
I'm assuming its the differences in the kernals, before the OTA updates, the transformer sounded pretty easy, but now they've locked things down since then
The new root allows boot custom boot and recovery partitions to be flashed to the device. Aloowing for nandroid backups and restores

Can we flash ROMs from internal memory as well?
I don't think so, as part of installing CWM you have to have an microsd card inserted. So I'm pretty sure at this point they don't have a version to use just the internal memory.
Also I did a nandroid and it looks like CWM currently backs up EVERYTHING on the internal SD card. Looking in storage i have about 380 Mb of system, 1.7 for media but my nandroid was ~2 GB.
If this is true, may be a problem down the road, where your nandroid may take almost your whole microsd just to store.

Just transfer off old nandroids and put back on as needed. Just means you have to make sure you have at least enough space to hold the nandroid you want to put on/restore to though.

Yeah... I only have an 8GB with 12 GB of stuff on the E3T so nandroid is a no-go for me at the moment ):
Tell me about it, I've got a 16GB in the desire that's never more than half full but I only had a 4GB lying around when I got the transformer so I'm tight on space till I get something bigger.
I am going to get a 32GB card for this and keep my media on it rather than the transformer. That way the transformer shouldn't get too big for nandroids.
I'm sure it's only a matter of time before honeycomb is ripped apart and we will be able to mount the /sdcard partition to a part of the nand that isn't backup up by nandroid. It lives in /data/media at the moment but a custom MTD could take care of that if such a thing existed yet...
Wouldn't this prevent me from being able to receive future OTA's though? Or do we have a way to flash an SBF of some sort (I'm pretty sure we don't).
Of course no updates from Asus but devs will give us the updates instead after taking the bad crap out.
i did every steps< 5. Wait up to 10 minutes for gingerbreak to do its stuff, once its done you will have SU (#) symbol< got the symbol try the other steps didnt work reboot ...now im trying to do it again and i get permission denied????

Hi, guys. I need some help, if possible. I ordered a A500 as a gift for my dad from TechForLess. It was shipped to me with 3.0.1 demo firmware...which is essentially unusable. When I reset, it just comes back.
I did a search and other people have had this issue. They flashed a ROM using Micro SD. I tried that, but it doesn't appear that my unit is recognizing the card in the MicroSD card reader.
I'm getting a refund, but they're letting me keep the unit, and I'm trying to get it up and running for my dad for Father's day.
How can I flash a ROM (any working ROM) on this unit, not using MicroSD? For what it's worth, my computer recognizes the unit, so if there's a way to do that, it might work.
I'm new to all of this. Can anyone help?
Thanks!

Yeah Baby, we can help!!!!
It all depends on what you want to do.
a. Do you want to keep it stock (factory). This is ok with warranty, but seeings it's a demo model, I would guess it doesn't come with much of a warranty. Not to mention a demo model is as useless as teats on a boar hog. So skip to step c.
b. You wanna make it rock? For the best reliabilty and functional use, you're going to have to root. With the OS you have, it's darn simple. Just access the android market, and download acer recovery installer to the tab.
Wait, you're not finished.
Now you should look here;
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1205204&highlight=iconiaroot
Then you can run AcerRecovery and install a custom HC based rom.
c. You want to run a stock update for the tab.
Now, you can't just put any old rom on the tab's sd card, and expect it to install. It doesn't work like that. First, the rom you install, has to be named "update.zip", and it should be a full rom update install. Not a patched one.
Also, the procedure to install, requires some buttons to be held. Most importantly, Holding Vol+ and the PWR button. This forces the tab to look for the update.zip on the Ext SD card.
You need to go here;
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1113878
Grab a full update (you might need to decrypt it to pull the update. I would take a ComGen1. (after decrypt, open in 7zip, not extract)
Copy the update.zip to your Ext SD card, and do the step above to boot. This should install a stock full rom to the tab off the SD card.
Not many people get 3.0.1 tabs these days.....

and if that one don't "stuff" your kitten, we got a whole lot of other tricks....

Thanks-- but it's not reading my SD card, so I think the reader might not be working. I'm not worried about that for my dad, but I need a way to get a working ROM on there that doesn't involve the SD card reader. I'm hoping that's one of your tricks!
Your tablet comes with a built in SD card (basically the memory you have on your tablet) 8 gb or 16 gb I've flashed mods through the built in SD card but I've never tried a from so I can't speak on that but I think you will be able to if you just download the rom and try to flash it but I'm not 100% sure so wait for someone to let you know but that that's just an idea to throw at you.

If I can get it going with a normal ROM, it's a win. If not, it's a huge pain in the ass. The SD card not mounting is killing me! There HAS to be a way... Right?
Well, I managed to get it rooted without using an SD card. Then I installed Acer Recover, but it's still looking to install an update from the SD card, which it can't see. When I go into Clockwork recovery and try to flash that way, it finds an update.zip at /SDcard/update.zip. I thought if I could replace that file, it could do the trick...but I can't find it using my computer.
This is driving me insane? Any other thoughts for how I can do this without a working SD card reader in the tablet?

Yes. In CWM you will have to mount the USB stick though. Then you can flash from the stick drive. (not capable in the original version of CWM)
I also remember Thor at one time, made it possible to flash from internal memory, but not sure If I remember correctly.
I would suspect after you get running again with a real rom, your SD card will probably start working again. They may have it disabled for demo purposes.
I would just install one of the 3.2.1 customs instead of messing with the update.zip. They were designed to run from SD card. Till you get that issue fixed, I would run custom. You can get a stock rooted 3.2.1 in the dev forum.
Format your Ext SD to FAT32 on your pc after you get up and running.
MD
EDIT: One more thing. "IF" you install a plain STOCK 3.2+ rom, (a non-pre rooted stock rom) you will lose your CWM recovery and root. And the process to "roll-back" is a bit of a pain. Not impossible, just more steps again.
I need a stick to give it a shot, but fingers are crossed. Appreciate the help. I'll report back....

I believe in the newer CWM, you have to mount the USB in Mounts and Storage. Basically I think it switches between EXT SD and USB Storage. Never used it myself, but the option is there.
Also, you can install a zip from internal memory as well in the newer versions of CWM.
MD
In this version, I have the option to mount USB...I'm hoping that does the trick...because it was tough enough to find a root method that didn't involve the MicroSD slot.

Do you have the ST or STG? I messed up the system on my STG and is now running the software of ST. Since I cannot find any factory image of the STG, I just order another Nook. My plan is to backup the rom and factory partitions and make a image from the new Nook, apply it to the old and overwrite the rom + factory partitions.
If you have the STG, I can send you a full STG image once I have it (the new nook should arrive in a week or so). From this you should be able to recover the partition tables and the software (I guess, I am pretty new to this). Your only problem will then be that you are missing the original rom and factory images.
Let me know if this would be useful for you.
Thanks!

The first thing I did after rooting, because it is what the tutorials and this forum always stress, is to make a Nandroid backup, which I did through TWRP Recovery. Nowhere did I see an option regarding where to save it. Low and behold, I find out that it saved the backup files, which are nearly 3gb in size, to the phone, instead of my larger SD card. Obviously I want to move it to the latter. But by what means should I do that, particularly so that the backup can be easily flashed onto the device later if need be? I don't want to move it only to make the files undiscoverable in Recovery.
(I apologize if this is a stupid question, but this is my first time rooting, and nothing useful was yielded from a forum search.)

In order for CWM or TWRP to see the files on your memory card it has to be 32GB (those are usually formatted in FAT32). If you have a 64GB memory card that would be formatted in extFAT. The programs cant read extFAT so you would need to take the card out place it in your PC and use a FAT32 program to make it FAT32.

Did the card read FAT32 on your computer? IF it did it shouldn't change when you put it in the phone unless your running some type of custom software and it's messing with the file system.

It never specified. There is no media format listed like for the computer's internal HD, and when I click to format, it tells me nothing, nor gives me no options. It just tells me that it is done.
So I have solved the problem. Below is a reference for other users who might have the same issue:
1) Used GoodManager for Reboot Recovery
2) Made a new Nandroid backup, this time discovering that I could assign the backup to my sd card. And so I did exactly that.
3) Rebooted after backup made.
4) Connect phone to computer via USB, and use Windows Explorer to drag and drop the backup that was sitting on the phone in the same area where the new backup is.
Basically, knowing that I could back up to the SD card, and that TWRP created a file path for exactly that, I knew that I could move the old backup there too.
That said, I very much appreciate the help given to me.

I was able to use TWRP to perform nandroid backup directly to my 64GB microUSB - it supported it without any problems (didn't have to even take the microSD out of the phone)

Just noticed you are on Verizon - I installed on my Sprint device, but it looks like it is available for Verizon S4 as well (I went to http://teamw.in/project/twrp2, and clicked "Get TWRP for your device", entered S4 as search criteria and found "TWRP for Samsung Galaxy S4 (Verizon) [jfltevzw]" as the last entry in the list.
Personally, I'd recommend downloading goomanager from the play store, and using that to install.
From http://teamw.in/project/twrp2/181
"Android App Install Method (Preferred):
You must be rooted to use the GooManager install. Download the GooManager app from either location:
Market Link
Direct Download
Install the app and open it. Tap menu then hit Install OpenRecoveryScript. Tap Yes. Verify that the filename displays your device's code name and hit Yes. The file will download and your device will install the recovery automatically."

It is basically a front end for goo.im (which is a very popular Android file hosting site) - provides downloads of ROMs, kernels, apps, GApps, recoveries etc

About to start flashing a custom rom (Aryamod) after more than a year on rooted, xposed Stock 4.3 on my N9005. As you can imagine I filled my 32 GB model to the brim and now I don't know how to back-up all my data on my phone straight to my PC. Something like a recovery image of my entire phone to my PC if ever I screw up flashing. Titanium might be an option but I only have the free version and again I don't have enough space on my phone to back up all my data. Any suggestions?

1- make sure your ? is on.
2- connect your ?to ? with cable.
3- copy & past / drag & move.
Will that back up my app data settings and game progress as well as my passwords and accounts?

When you say you have 'filled' the phone, are you talking Internal or do you mean you filled a 32GB external SD Card?
With TWRP you can easily set your backup (nandoid - i.e. everything) to an extSDCard and then simply copy that zip file to your PC. Later you can Restore only the Data if you want.
Titanium also lets you set your backups to the extSDCard.
If you mean you filled your extSDCard you have multiple options - take out the card and put it in a caddy and then a card reader and simply copy everything to PC. Buy a new and larger card. 64GB hi-speed ones work very well and even 128GB ones are down in price.
