com.google.android.gm.persistent causing massive battery drain - OnePlus 5 Questions & Answers

I'm at my wit's end with this. My battery is regularly draining at 20% + an hour, if i adb shell I find that com.google.android.gms.persistent is using 120-140 % CPU, and Google Play Services is using 60% of my battery according to GSAM..
I have tried everything, I've reset caches, I've witched off syncing, it's fine for a bit and then goes haywire again. Is there any way of finding out which app is trying to sync and fail - I can't see anything obvious in logcat, I've tried a system trace, it doesn't show anything exciting, other than removing all my apps and tarting again, any ideas?
Thanks

OTA battery drain [XXJVK]

Are you having high battery drain with XXJVK firmware, or any other 2.2.1 firmware?
Does your Battery Use shows high CPU usage time on Android OS?
Then, check if you ever had Software Updates logged in! I noticed high battery usage once I logged in for OTA updates. Possibly, the device is retrying the connection to update server (which will always return timeout). You can see the Software Update service running all the time once you logged in.
If you have logged in Software Updates, go Settings->Applications->Manage Application->All->Software Update->Clear Data
Once you have logged out from Software Updates, the service disappears and personally, battery life doubled.
Thanks, i will try it!
It really could be the last chance to solve my idle-drain-prob.
i'll report back.
//edit: cleared data, service automatically stopped. i'll report back tomorrow if it solves my drain-thing.
Yup i had it running too since boot.. cleared data and will report back
Let's hope this is the answer. I've just took the drastic measure of doing a hard reset and now battery drain is pretty much zero and phone is idle when screen is off. I'll keep installing and enabling things and see what takes more battery.
Very interesting, I did check if there were any updates, and I suffered from random battery drain. At first I suspected Google Maps/Navigation, but you could be right. I started Maps, and Navigation, killed en cleared OTA, and I am monitoring the battery.
I have found that when i use the built in task manager to "clear memory" as soon as i have done that the battery drains alot faster and my android OS in battery stats goes through the roof (from 5% to something like 14%). It has been running fine since yesterday and i cleared memory only to find my battery went very quickly from 28% to 9%. I rebooted the device and all is well, i wont be using that option anymore
After installing jvk full I installed jve modem, rooted and did battery stats wipe and battery issues went away.
i lost 25% over night in airplane mode
background & sync = off.
after clearing dalvik cache & battery recalibration using battery calibrator from market i have 5-7% drain per night, and 30-40% per day... last battery time was 2d 19h 14m, with some calls, some games, some wi-fi and some hsdpa & with weather widget update every hour.
info
i9000 + JVK (repartition 512, with bootloader) + CF Root
P.S before clearing dalvik cache & battery recalibration with same use i have maximum battery life - 23h
Clear the data for "Samsung Account".

There's something very wrong with your phone, either your battery's shot or there's a rogue program draining it, you shouldn't lose more than 1-2% overnight in airplane mode.
Same problem here. I hate this device...
Is it just me that think battery life is much better than on froyo?

I have no battery drain since i upgraded to jvk.

I'm seeing huge battery drain like others, sometimes more that 50% in a few hours doing absolutely nothing, wifi & 3G off and OS takes up to 60% of the battery usage. I never activated Automatice Updates since I flashed JVK. I am now on Darky's v10RC3. Only a few people are having such problems, most users say they are experiencing their best battery life ever.
I noticed that this drain always happened to me after I used Maps / Navigation. So I suspect them to create problems, maybe kicking off Software Update in a bad way. And rebooting stops the drain (it once took as long as a full flash for my phone to reboot...?).
So I have bought for $1 this nice app called Autostarts that shows which apps autostart, what triggers them to start and it is then possible to disable by app / event.
When I tap on Software Update, I can see that it kicks in on these occasions:
- After Startup
- Application installed
- Application removed
- SMS received
- Secret code entered
I disabled everything as well as for Map, so now it's no longer showing in running apps / processes.
Will follow this thread !

Spot on.
My Android OS battery usage is down to 3-5%.
Great find guys, Thanks a lot!
Also, a little suggestion here but I need someone to confirm.
Regarding Google Maps, I was having some trouble getting rid of Hotpot and Rate Places processes as they were constantly running for no reason and restart after I kill them. Another 13% drain. So yesterday I updated to Maps 5.3 and the processes are no longer there even though I've used Maps, Hotpot and Places
I upgraded with odin, repartition and bootloaders. Since now the battery life is very good, i can see the difference by eyes.

This worked for me.

Google Services Battery Drain Stats

I noticed a week or so ago that my battery suddenly started draining quite fast. I saw other threads that imply that something has happened with Google services is the culprit, but no real details as to why. This morning, after a day outside in the cold and snow and of almost no use of my phone I looked at my battery and it was down to 59%. Looked at stats and found the following use numbers:
Screen use: 9% - So phone hardly used
App use: 67%
Google Services: 29%
Under Google services I found the following and wonder if this is the problem and what could be causing it?
Wake locks: 19,983
# of times waking device: 2789
Thanks.

Try clearing cache partition in recovery. Worked for the other person that has a similar thread

Where is Recovery and Cache Partition? I don't see any of that on my phone.
Do you see the wake stats I posted as normal?

Google booting into recovery with note 3, then scroll down into clear cache partition. Don't do a full wipe cause that will delete everything

Still waiting for a solution to this problem. I even wiped my whole phone, unrooted, and went back to stock. Android OS is still the highest on the battery consumption list and I did not have anything signed in or logged in. Something is going on in these Google apps it's funny cause again I have nothing installed and my android os is taking so much battery.
I am having the same problem as well. Android OS and Google apps suck the life out of my phone. I have tried different ROMs as well but I still don't get good batt life even with SYNC GPS off.

Android OS Wakelock killing the battery!

Hey guys,
I've been having an S6 Edge+ for a couple of days already but there seems to be an issue with the ROM. I'm getting a lot of battery drain from the "Android OS" and I'm losing up to 5% - 7% per hour in standby.... I have even re-flashed the entire ROM and factory reset two times... still the same.
I've disabled Google's Location History and Google Now but this did not help...
My previous Galaxy S6 was also running the latest ROM but there were no such problems...
Has anybody else experienced such an issue and do you have any ideas?

Check if any sync is stuck in loop, sometimes this kills battery very easily. If all else fails check with some app like GSam.

Unfortunately GSam does not produce too detailed information without Root access and it only says Android System and lists all the services that are under it...
The interesting part is that after several re-flashes with the same firmware, the wakelock disappeared...
Now I get 76% to 80% deep sleep...
Go figure... Probably some stuck sync as you mentioned...

Ah great... I also had similar issue previously with Calendar sync, couple of flashes and it went. Now happily rooted
Android OS Wakelock killing the battery! ...... solved
OK, im not too savvy with settings and systems, just sharing what i have been through. I too had a major battery drain problem on my S6 Edge+ , giving me abt 8-10hrs of use after a full charge. Even during the nights with everything off and power saving enabled i would lose abt 50-60% battery over 8 hours. ..... caused by Android OS ....... it would keep the screen awake for hours even with the screen off .... ( dont know how that worked) ..... tried a factory reset but didnt help. Then rooted the phone and downloaded wakelock detector and installed it as a system app. Installed greenify and doze ..... last night lost 4% over 11hours with wifi and 4g off and power saving enabled which is a drastic improvement. Facing one little problem that images do not get downloaded (automatically or manually) in whatsapp with wifi in use. Will use the cell for a few days and post again abt how the battery is holding up and if there is any other performance issues.
If you want to save battery, try this app:
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.kunkunsoft.packagedisabler
It show all RAM usage of each app, you can disable any app in Bloatware (samsung default app) list to save power
This app run WITHOUT ROOT

mate 8 doesn't want to go in doze mode.

I'm getting bad battery drain during standby, so I checked the battery stats with GSam monitoring and it is showing the device doesn't go in device mode.
Stats was taken after 5 hours
Deep Sleep 0s
Doze time 0s
It is already a clean install b180 rom so what could be the cause?

The same problem here, I used B180 and B182 on my Mate 8 stock AL-10 chinese. I tried many hard resets and many attempts to configure it by paying attention in what to install and the way to do it, but nothing changed. My Mate is always active as reported on its battery graphic and by GSam monitoring too (during all day it went into deep sleep only for 2,5 minutes and never into Doze).
What's the problem and how can I fix it?
Have u been able to fix it, Bissa?
Thanks in advance for all kinds of help

Exactly the same issue here... It's been drinving me nuts. I have to rebbot the phone for it to go to deep sleep, but then, after using it for some time, it won't sleep again... Very anoying. I'm thinking of rooting my phone just to get rid of this issue...

Today I tried that and for now it has been looking like working, because into battery graphic and info I noticed what drained mostly my battery was Android OS. I started by removing my Google account, then I went to settings / App and there I clicked on menu / view all system processes. After that I went into every Google app (Google now, Contacts, Contacts sync, Calendar, Gmail, Google Play services, Google Play Store, Google Services Framework, Google text to speech) and inside the menu "Memory" I selected to delete all data. After that I restarted my Mate 8 and did a wipe cache then after reboot I set my google account and voilĂ  my Gmail notifications work fine and now battery drain seems to have gone away cause Android OS eats the right and System goes to deep sleep correctly.
I hope to be useful for someone else

A few weeks after, does it still work as it should, or did the issue came back ?
I just can't get rid of this issue... I rooted my phone, and installed BBS, but it can't identify which app is keeping the phone from entering deep sleep... This night, I've had 12h of Awake (screen off), but the first wakelock in Partial Wakelocks is 12 minutes long... It drives me crazy !

Battery draining, device overheating.

Hey everyone. I was hoping someone would be able to help me with this. I've tried searching for this issue but can't find a solution.
Basically over the weekend, I noticed my phone has been running hotter than usual and battery is draining within 3 hours. It gets hot to a point where the phone automatically shuts down. The phone can be just sitting on my desk with the screen off, idle and it's hot with battery draining.
On battery usage graph, it constantly shows that chrome is using 33% of the battery in the last 24 hours. I disabled chrome but the problem still persists. I went into developer mode and cross checked all the system processes and saw nothing unusual. I booted into safe mode as well but the problem is still there. I checked CPU-Z and I see that the processor is never below 50% while the phone is idling. I'm not sure what's using the processor this much that the phone is running hot.
I've uninstalled most apps, I've even turned off the cellular network and wifi but the problem is still there.
I don't see any physical defect or any bulging on the back of the phone or against the screen.
I'm about to factory reset this phone to see if this fixes it, but I was wondering if anyone has any suggestions before I do that.
Thank you!
Try temporarily disabling Google play Services and see if this helps. Any cloud app is suspect.
Disable Google Firebase. Clearing data in Google system apps may get it.
Is Global power management disabled? Do so if not. Disable any adaptive battery etc services.
Deal with power hogs on a case by case basis.
I would try to find the root cause rather than do a factory reset as it is likely to reoccur. Exceptions; malware, firmware upgrade/update, a 3rd party app that change hidden users settings (if rooted you have access to these... if you can find the altered one). You need to play with it and try to track it down. Get the tools you need to find it ie detailed app/services power usage.
Be careful though as you are burning up the battery. Power off the display once battery temp reaches 103F. Cool it down then proceed again.
Using a damp microfiber cloth will help to cool it.
Any resent upgrades or updates?
Any app recently installed or uninstalled?
What apps are using a lot of internet bandwidth?
Is it using excessive current with screen off too?
What's running at startup?
