Hey guys,
im sorry if the topic doesnt fit here. I am new and not a techi. My Son just tried to flash some custom ROM on our Samsung Tab A and somehow bricked it. It is not possible for me to get into Recovery or Download Mode i have already tried all Button-Combinations. It just shows an error saying "An error has occured while updating the device software. Use the Emergency recovery function in the Smart Switch PC software."
I have already tried with draining the Baterry empty (described in forum thread here: https://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1478361) and plug it in to get the Charging symbol. But it doesnt happen. It just shows only the Error..
So i really dont have any more ideas how to get into recovery/download mode.. Is there anything i didnt tried??
It seems like the download-mode is not available. Is there a way to "install" a new one??
edit: it seems like this IS the download-mode.. anyways i think i just need the stock firmware for this model T510NZKDDBT. I cant find it via duckduck/google..
Maybe someone can help me with it?
Thank you
nevermind!! i've figured it out. Flashed new bootloader via Odin. Now its working again

I know I'm a year late, and you've either figured this out or moved on, but maybe I can clear this up for anyone else in the same situation.
I stuffed up and got the same message - "An error has occured while updating the device software. Use the Emergency recovery function in the Smart Switch PC software."
That error message screen is basically the download screen. Windows (and the Smart Switch software) won't connect to the tablet while that screen is displayed, but Odin will.
You can bring up Odin and re-flash the stock software (or whatever you need) while that message is displayed. If you still have trouble, holding power and down-volume will re-initialise the download screen, though it will still display the same "emergency recovery function" error message.
I hope that's enough of a description to get people out of trouble!

Hi,
Today I wanted to update my Galaxy S via Kies and I get "Update Fail". From then my phone won't start, won't boot, won't do anything. On screen appears a phone with exclamation mark and a PC. I tried vol down + home + power but that symbol
won't disappear.
You can see the exact symptomes if you will search on youtube "Re: Samsung galaxy s upgrade FROYO 2.2 fail ! ! HELPPP "
Any solutions?
I would be grateful

In Kies select "tools", "emergence firmware recovery"....follow on screen instructions
This happened to me more than once.
Just pull out your battery and push the powerbutton for 3 seconds.
Now put the battery in, start in downloadmode and flash via odin
Time for a custom rom if you ask me...
You will never look back trust me...
Custom ROMS are always problematic and the OP is not asking about custom or stock roms..
@gabi Whenever such a situation occurs, just reinsert the battery and enter the phone to download mode and flash again and make sure your USB connection is solid and you are flashing with the correct files.
First of all.. that's a load of crap..
2nd.. he is using kies, not odin .. so what correct files?
Facepalm.

Also you are able to flash a stock firmware with odin but the OP has to find the right firmeware on his own.
I just gave a very usefull tip ;-)
@OP: Did it work for you?
Hello guys this is my first post and please consider me as a beginner.
I have a SAMSUNG GALAXY S3 international version. I believe the solution I will be posting will work for all types if they get the message "Firmware upgrade encountered an issue. Please selected recovery mode in Kies & try again".
I downloaded the file attached to the post (insecure kernel).
Then with help of odin v3.04 the phone in download mode I installed the above insecure kernel. By doing this I got the firmware issue away then I put the phone to recovery mode by pressing the volume up button and menu button and power button and selected the option factory reset and wiped or deleted the entire data. Once that was done I was able to install the latest Jellybean 4.1 official release using odin and my phone is back to life. I am so happy. I belive it will work for you also..
Thanks.

Disconnect the USB, remove the battery, put it back and get into recovery and see if it gets into download mode. If you get the "recovery screen" again, connect to kies and try the emergency recovery. Irrespective of what happens, retry getting into download mode again after that. I had encountered the same problem during and update after around 62% was written to the phone and was able to get into download mode again.
Never use kies. Always use Odin, or Mobile Odin.

Please search for similar threads. This same issue is being posted over and over and over again. When you were making this post, what "similar threads" or "similar topics" showed up? Did you check them for a solution?
yes sorry i looked at all of them and they all involved well just flashing the stock rom but i cant get my computer to see my gs4 on download mode...i got the drivers and odin installed.
Well, this thread has a couple of ideas...
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2405991
or maybe here...
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2405127
You might also want to look at the TWRP thread in the development section.
Try again to get into recovery, the key sequence can be tricky, make sure you are doing it just right. "Doing it just right" has been discussed many times.
Also, look at this thread, maybe it will help...
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2398336
Yea, I realize that thread is about MF3, but it still has ideas that might help you.
There are also a ton of threads about how to get your PC to recognize ODIN.....search.......good luck.
yeah ive been at it for hours man those links can all access the recovery i cant... i tried everything got the drivers up tried all the odins and its just stuck on "downloading do not turn off target" and my pc doesnt see it...
Odin finally recognized it on the pc in download mode and i was able to flash the stock rom but it seems it wasnts successful...it still just vibrates and vibrates when i press the power...
Try flashing the open recovery.

Take battery out, back in, power+volumedown, download mode, Install Samsung Kies, do Kies update, connect to PC, Tools-> firmware initialization, take battery out and type model/serial Number, wait patiently until it finishes.
Try different USB port or different PC. Use stock USB cable comes with original box.
If Kies screen get stuck at model number section, you did flash MF3 triangle thingy -> unsolveable brick. Have to go thorugh warranty replacement.

So i was rooting my phone with TMWP then my phone was encrypted so i used Odin with an original AP of my samsung device
in the progress of doing that i canceled the progress.
so now i keep getting An error has occurred while updating the device software. Use the Emergency recovery function in the Smart Switch Pc software. so i did that but now i am at this step, telling me to put the phone in recovery mode but when i try to do that it keeps giving me the same error (An error has occurred while updating the device software. Use the Emergency recovery function in the Smart Switch Pc software.)
Im freaking out right now if you guys could help PLEASE.

Probably the phone is not detected?

How are you getting to recovery mode?
Should be Vol Down + Home + Power all at the same time
Are you able to power off your device?
If not, press and hold Power + Vol Down until it vibrates or you see it turn completely off, then hold Home (while still holding Power and Vol Down).
Give that a shot to get to recovery.
I had this problem when i tried messing around with TMWP. I dont belive there is one for the S7 egde US models to my knowledge or at least not for att currently due to the us and international models having a different processors International having a Exynos 8890 and US models having a Snapdragon 820. Im pretty sure because of those having different processors TMWP needs to have a build for both processors to my knowledge fix me if im wrong.
Heres what i posted on another thread about trying to flash your phone back to stock and it not working.
Post:
So I would suggest going to this post here and downloading the ODIN 3.12
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2711451
I was trying to unroot for a clean root and this one worked for me the one made by PrinceComsy did not work for the flashing the stock ROM but it did work for flashing the ENG Boot ROM. I used 3 out of the 4 file to flash the stock rom I didn't select the BL file at all but you can if you want.
If this help you or you need further/help assistance please feel free to reply to this post

I had the same problem. It is a screen that says something along the lines of 'Update failed' or 'an error occurred during update'. It turned out for me that that actually was recovery mode just with the error screen. Plugging it into Kies on that screen allowed the emergency firmware to work and fix my phone.

My samsung SM-G935FD has the same problem and I tried with Smart Switch and Kies but they say my device is not supported can anyone help???
My ZTE Blade AF3 (T221) can't boot into fastboot nor normal mode (so I could use adb). I can only use recovery mode. I tried to flash the stock firmware through apply update option, but the latest available firmware online is 1.0.4 and the recovery is on 1.0.5 (DIS_RU_QB18D_P731A20V1.0.5). That wouldn't be a problem if the update-script didn't check for the version of the current firmware and abort the installation because it's newer. I tried to delete the checking code from the script, but then the file verification check fails. I didn't find an option to turn that check off and I can't flash a custom recovery due to the lack of fastboot mode.
There is also another mode to which it can go into if I just let it boot without pressing any buttons. The ZTE logo appears, then disappears and the white screen remains. In Device Manager it's identified as "Gadget Serial". I don't know if I could use it somehow.
Is there anything I could do to flash the stock ROM or another recovery to the device?
Thanks for help!
Edit: If someone knows a method to boot into fastboot other than holding down the volume - key and plugging in the USB cable the advice is more than welcome, I just think I tried every kind of button combinations (although I wouldn't have guessed myself the process to go into recovery mode, so there's always the chance).
You already solved it? Maybe i can help you!

Nope, I abandoned it. I even wrote to ZTE support, but they said I should wait for the newer firmware to be uploaded to the site (which I kept checking for a while, but nothing happened, so I eventually stopped). I haven't used that phone since, it now lives in the bottom of a drawer somewhere .
If you have any tips, I can try to make it work, but it's not that important anymore, so don't bother if it's too much work.
