Just getting into the Android auto scene, and deciding what unit to go with.
Obviously the scene for the px5 units seems a lot more mature, so I'm tempted to go that way. I know everything I touch I end up rooting, so I'm wondering if I should pick up a px5 device instead.
Are people in the scene going with the newer px6's if we have the chance or should we pick up older units?
I have the same question... I have to replace an old (and hacked) PX3 unit (1 g ram is too little for me) But I don't know if buy a PX5 unit or PX6. At the moment I'm really confused. Pro & Cons?
sub'd
I would go PX5, PX5 has community support, sure the PX6 is gaining steam but wait.. I had one of the first PX6 units in NA and it was definitely a work in progress.. It took me a while to gain root and even when I did it was way to new to do much with.. I have it sitting on a shelf till there is more done. I have only been able to root it.. Tried many times to install Malasyk with no avail. I dont have the time with my career to dabble.. I miss doing that.

No question about it. The PX6 is heads and shoulders above the PX5. Faster chips, using less power and much better gpu. If you are looking to be thrifty about it, go with the less expensive Seicane or Doing. If you want the best Android unit go with Dasaita Max6. Cheers!

I went with the max6, got it all rooted and love it! Great unit! I mean, the resolution could use some work, as we all know. But other than that it's great!
I see no problems going with px6. Its just like phones. Yha gotta wait for the support. Or you must really need root..
Hardware mainboard has not changed. Per px3, expect same ported software bugs and hardware issues, with an upgraded processor. Might be more to do with SOM/SOC supply than anything else.
I have a Dasaita PX5 HU, can I buy a PX6 SOM and replace the one in my HU?
does it have to be Dasaita or any SOM is ok? where can i buy one?
thanks!

Hello everyone, I wonder what the "Android 2DIN Head Unit Universal" who advise me to buy "value and price".I did not want to spend much money, but at the same time do not want to put something weak. Someone can help me ? Is for VW Golf 4 year 2000. If possible good seller too. Thank you
You might struggle with this kind of post because most people will only have experience with one unit.
All I can say is the I went for the Newsmy Carpad 2 and am really happy with it. But I think if you went for any of the popular ones on this forum you wont be going far wrong.
I'd stay clear of the rare ones though - bit more risky and you wont get the same level of community support.

OP let me know what you end up getting. I as well have a 2001 GTI 1.8T. I have the appradio 2 but didn't install it yet. Want to get an android set up.
after my experience w/ my car joying unit, I say you are best off going with a unit customer built for your car. it will cost you more but in the end it will be easiest installation, best look, and the least compromise.
see if car joying makes one for your car model. they have great support both here on xda, and directly through the manufacturer.

They don't make them for Mk4 Golfs. Format is too old. He can only go with an universal joying and a fascia which you can get from anywhere from 8 to 35 Euro...

I had this unit. it's the best standard head unit you can buy as of now. the big issue it has is BT audio quality. If you can live with below average BT call quality then you should be okay. Everything else about it is great. I personally wasn't happy w/ how it looked in my car though. Be aware it is NOT a true double-din size. It is about .5" wider than a standard double-din, so you will need to do some cutting to get it to fit right in your car.
Maybe you should go with a universal head unit, cause I can't find a plug&play one for Golf 4 currently... If you got one, pls let me know ...
Hello.
I just bought one of these 2 DIN android head units, it should arrive next week.
http://www.ebay.com/itm/7-Double-2din-CAR-MP3-MP5-Player-Radio-Quad-Core-Android-4-4-gps-Bluetooth-GPS-/112071545669?hash=item1a17fc1345:g:4aoAAOSwFe5Xz7t8
Anyone knows the brand/make or has any relevant info about this device regarding it's amplifier power and overall quality?.
It's based on the typical RK3188 platform with 1GB of RAM and 16GB storage, so i guess that it may be compatible with other systems roms based on the same hardware.
Probably an MTCB.
Overall quality: not better than "junk".
Personally, I wouldn't waste the time to install it.
Why would you buy something without knowing what it is?
Well, someone has to do it since you can't find any info about this device on the entire web. And judging by your answer you have no idea either, so I guess i'll just wait for someone else's knowledge or just wait quietly for it to arrive and test it by myself.
@Habieru, check out the RK-A701 thread below.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/and...stions-development/info-unit-rk-a701-t3460559
Also, check out this google search: https://www.google.com/#q=rk-a701
Anyway, from my quick search, the RK-A701 head unit does not appear to have the MTC type MCU, and no one appears to have found a way to access recovery and flash any custom firmware yet. On the plus side, the RK-A701 is cost effective, has the higher resolution 1024x600 display, and root can be achieved with kingoroot or kingroot. That said, if cost is not a major concern, I'd recommend stepping up to one of the new Joying Intel units with 2GB of RAM or at a minimum any MTC type MCU unit or any Newsmy Carpad with 2GB of RAM.
Hope this helps...
R
Thank you very much @rhacy , that's the kind of info i was looking for.
After fully reading that thread, and some russian blog reviews i can conclude that this unit is just as you say, a cheap unit with no major highlights but gets the job done. Pretty much what i need because cost is a concern for me and this device offers pretty much the same as the others.
My father has one of those new Intel Sofia X3 headunits with lollipop and it sounds great, but i must say that performace wise the X3 is terrible compared to the RK3188. So for now i'm going to give this unit a trial, and if it does not meet some minimum standards i can just sell it.
And again, thank you very much for your help.
hello
I'm really debating between choosing the latest JOYING headunit (with the digital amplifier) and the PUMPKIN 7.1 android
does they have the external mic problem?
Is there any other recommended stable Chinese android head unit?
I'm more or less convinced that it's really a zero sum game with these units. Each has it's own issues and benefits and they even out. Find one with the screen you like and general features.

they all have basically the same feature. it's supposed to be almost identical units...
do u recommend a specific model from specific brand? there are so many of these Chinese brands.
+1 for Pumpkin, I've had the RQ0278E for a few months now, it's nice but it has its quirks. The Android 6.0 update made it better. Btw, I can't seem to get my DAC to work with it properly

Everyone has an opinion or approach. Depends on your objectives.
Personally, I find a good source first. I like Amazon because I can easily return. Then a look in the forums to check the amount of discussions and support for things I need. I read a bit and then buy something that seems to have some discussions and an amount of success or managed issues. Not everyone takes the approach.
Pumpkin and Joying are fairly established so I think they go in a short list.
I'm about to go with a Secaine unit because they do a nice job with dash specific plastic and form factors, but I don't hear much good about the guts. I see a lot of negative things, but that may just be because only people with problems post.
If you like hands on mods then a Joying might be fun. If you don't then maybe consider any good options that aren't Intel based.

Can you use your phone as a wifi hotspot? That would keep things simple.
Reliable might not be a quality attributed to any of the android unit. It's my opinion that most of accept some degree of mediocre reliability in exchange for the functionality we gain with being able to run android on the head unit.
You may want to consider opening your search to include Android Auto units. Waze is supported now.

I would not recommend an android unit for older parents that use an old simple nokia if the reasons are that a smart phone is too complicated. I believe they may have issues with the use of the unit and that could be a safety issue.
ATOTO Double DIN Android 6.0 is my choice
I am owning ATOTO Android 6.0 HU. When it comes to operation speed, ATOTO is the best. After PUMPKIN Android 7 released for 2 months, I checked a lot reviews about it. But I think that may slower than my ATOTO Android 6.0 system. So I will just keep Android 6.0
i want to buy unit that support video out (headrest monitors), i found 2 units that i think that is good and i dont know what to choose.
1. joying JY-UM135N2PX5 CPU: PX5 Octa core Cortex-A53 up to 1.5GHz
2. hizpo WJZ99GX - CPU: T8 2.0GHz (i think this is the model number)
most of the parameters are the same, exept the CPU
does anybody could recommend one of them or maybe another unit that i missed?
Yes, after long time research, I finally got ATOTO back with my 2003 Mazda Miata. So far so good. The screen responds faster than my wife's Joying. Good try!And it helped me save a lot money.

Ive been using android units for years, currently Ive got a 10.1 Joying Sofia unit I want to replace, a JY-UL134N2, im fed up with how quickly Joying abandoned it. Ive had various make and spec units in the past as things have evolved.
Im specifically looking for another double din unit with a 10 inch screen.
Basically Im looking for something with good update support thats PX5 based, 4gb ram and 32gb rom or better.
Ideally something Malaysk compatible too.
Ive read talk about some units now coming with better DSP setups which would be good.
I saw a 10.1 screen version of the ATOTO A6 Pro I liked but their specs like dual bluetooth make me wonder if theyre Malaysk compatible and the hardware specs seem to lag behind with quad core and less ram.
I also read that Dasaita are very good at ongoing support.
I have also been considering the xtrons TE103AP.
Essentially based on the above I would appreciate peoples suggestions as I want to make a purchase soon since my Joying has become problematic.

In that case make sure you get a PX5 MTCE unit - then it will be compatible with the Malaysk or Hal9K roms. If it isn't MTCE you won't have much luck with mods.
Thanks for replying, know any with a 10.1 screen specifically?
Ive been refamiliarising and some of the new intel based airmont ones sound interesting for speed and with dsp but ive only seen the joying unit and im not fond of the type of screen mounting.
Theres also the talk about PX6 units but they seem to be much slower arriving than expected.

Yep thats the one i keep coming back to thanks. Ive got very used to the bigger screen which works very well in a vw T5 dashboard.
Just the advent of airmont items has me distracted, and the idea of a dsp added, but ive lived fine without advanced dsp up until now
However the px5 is apparently the equal or better of sofia 3gr so that would do, especially with malaysk etc vs bloated stock roms.
Yeah I have a PX5 with DSP and the DSP is pretty good - there are ways of adding it to a unit, but it requires some soldering apparently. You could ask Xtrons if they can add it for you. I know some sellers give that option.
Good suggestion, I have sent an email will see if I get a reply.
It must be possible Im guessing the XV8 from androidautoshop is the same unit : https://androidautoshop.com/univers...32gb-entertainment-system.html#/26-map-europe
Im tempted to just commit and buy though sense dictates I should wait and see what PX6 or Airmont stuff comes out soon (maybe).
On that thought does anyone know of any Airmont based double din units with DSP there are with a 10 inch screen (if any) are out yet? (other than the one joying unit being discussed recently).

Yes that one looks the same. Android Auto Shop units also come pre-rooted with Hal9K ROM apparently, and you can get a $25 discount with a link in the Hal9K ROM thread here: https://forum.xda-developers.com/an...nt/rom-hal9k-rom-3-mtcd-e-head-units-t3847477
I think that has expired the site doesnt recognise it.
No matter will still consider the purchase.
Never tried hal9k just malaysk some time back before i had the sofia unit.
Well as yet xtrons havent bothered to respond if they could supply one with a DSP fitted.
androidautoshop responded quickly to a couple of emails asking for some details, then frustratingly I found the XV8 is now sold out lol.

Xtrons finally responded, saying their unit isnt dsp compatible.
Meaning really they dont have any equipped units to sell.
Just a follow up, looks like Hal9k is going to do an A9 version for PX6 MTCE units, and the Dasaita Max6 10.2 unit with DSP is a perfect match, so Ill be buying that one soon.

I sent Dasaita a message asking and they confirmed its MTCE.

I've been looking at this same one. Do you really need a custom rom though with these? I mean... it's a radio..not a phone. Isn't a custom launcher good enough? (assuming we still have root)
They are much, much more than a radio. They are computers akin to decent tablets WITH a radio and amplifier added, essentially the MCU part combined with the system core board.
In the past ive used malaysk on mtcb and mtcd units, then gtx on a sofia unit. Many cusstom roms on phones too for many years. Ive found custom roms are worth it, removing bloat, making them perform better and adding sensible features, ie a lock screen on boot with gtx or more responsive with mslaysk making them safer to use when driving. Or better sound processing, more useability, xposed, gps fixes, bluetooth fixes, rds fixes, and so on the list is quite significant for some devices.
Unfortunately with most resellers, and makers for that matter, little or at least minimum effort goes into the android aspect beyond looks with these stereos. As always the work done by people here at xda bridges the gap to help make significant improvements to some devices.
In my opinion and experience buying these units in stock form are akin to unfinished, it takes a custom rom to make them what they should. Yes theyre improving all the time and i havent experienced dasaita before (their rep for android updates is good) ive most recently wasted my money on a couple of joying units (never again), also consider the likes of hal9k is sponsored by androidautoshop and they actually supply many of their units preinstalled with hal9k instead of stock i believe.
Just bought a head unit from AndroidAutoShop, I can keep you posted on what I think when it arrives and I get it installed.
I too am looking to get a semi future proof 10" double din (or single) HU.
I've been looking at Xtrons, I'll study Dasiata.

I looked at Xtrons units, but for my car they only had units with PX30, and I would like something with PX6.
What I have heard, Android 9 is more "smoother" and faster than 8.1. Just an overall improvement I think.
Does DSP affect the ability to use custom ROMs like Malaysk?

Malaysk works on Intel Sofia? Thought it was on RockChip
Hi.
I have a VW Scirocco 2010 with Dynaudio system, until now I have a Joying Intel Sofia unit, but since 2 weeks ago the unit display start to dissapear sometimes and right now if more often that the display doesn´t work.
I'm thinking in change the unit and I have seen the new Joying 4Gb and a Pumpking unit. Both manufacters said that is compatible with dynaudio system.
I would like to know which one do you think is bette and with better audio quality, because when I changed my factory radio (RCD510) to Joying intel sofia, the sound quality was much worse than the factory sound.
Joying 4/64Gb Intel SC9853i Android 8.1.0
Pumpkin 4/32 Octacore Android 9.0
Thank you very much

Nobody can help me?
The OEM head unit has an in-build equalizer curve (to match the Dynaudio system), the android radio has a "flat" output. That is the reason for the bad or different soud quality.
I had my Skoda Columbus Navigation device coded via VCDS to "flat" (because I have an external DSP installed) and there is no change in sound quality after my recent change to an Joying Intel device.
Any up on this topic please. We need Android 9 firmware like Malay for Joying Intel SC9853i. The reason for an aftermarket radio is for us to be able to customize as needed, but it seems that Joying firmware is too boring and a lot of bugs. Don't quote me wrong, I love Joying radio, but they need to do more with firmware updates.

Come on. It is the same for all brands. Joying is actually relatively active with their firmware upgrades compared to the rest. Since introduction in Feb 2019 we already had 6-7 firmware upgrades.
The fact that Malaysk and Hal9K are even more active with their custom roms, doesn't mean Joying is not doing a (relatively) good job.
And as such I fully agree: there are bugs in the FYT software (not Joying! Joying is like many others brands just a reseller of FYT hardware/software), and it takes way too long to solve them. But at least you sometimes get a firmware upgrade.
Malaysk/Hal9k give you more options to tweak your mtc-b/c/d/e unit, but qualitatively speaking: the units are not better or worse. All Chinese units are qualitatively worse compared to the real A-brands.
Also: How often do you get an upgrade on your phone if it is not an A-brand and a top-model of that A-brand?
You pay 300 euros/dollars for a unit, and maybe 500-1000 euros/dollars for a phone, which proabably also sell in much higher quantities increasing margin. What do you expect?
Hi surfer63,
I appreciate your comment. I just want you to know that you don't need to sound defensive here. If you read my comment good I said I love Joying radio, which is my opinion. How much we spend on radio is not what matters.
NVIDIA Shield 2015 still receives update till now just for an example. I guess you know how much it cost to get one.
I love Joying radio and will recommend it to anyone that is in the market for an Android radio.

I dont think you understood his post, there's nothing defensive in it. You also missed where surfer explains that Joying are a reseller of FYT, they're just a reseller of multiple manufacturers.

Not necessary at all. We all reflect our own opinions here and sometimes they are not the same, sometimes they directly clash. Sometimes we simply misunderstand each other. Most of us are not native speakers (like myself) and that sometimes can also lead to discussions going into the wrong direction.
As long as everyone shows respect to one another, that is never a problem (to me). It only sometimes takes a few more posts to get it clear.
