I can't see your phone so I don't know what is exactly going on, but if you type into Google any smartphone name and word "overheating" you will see dozens of threads and articles. People are just overreacting, smartphones are getting warm it's just their nature, plenty of processing power etc. If yours is getting too hot maybe it's some app working in background.
My phone gets very hot on top of screen, near speaker

My phone is also overheating very quickly now. It started after i rooted the phone and installed some root apps like greenify and clean master. I have now disabled those apps to see if it helps.
Anyhow, it's not a big deal. It won't burn up so what is all the fuss about?
I have the same thing, the same spot as you mention. On samsung stock rom its really worse!, but on cm its decent. however, my pone always turns off when testing antutu at stock max cpu speed...
I can only go to 1674mhz. any higher and it will instant shutdown on antutu
hi, i'm from singapore
and im using the i9505 variant of the S4 and i'm having the same issue about the heat on the top half of the phone
it heats up so bad i cant touch the top half of the phone at all
Is this caused by the 4.2.2 update like what everyone says?
My view/experience with i9505 on (over)heating. I direct this at Samsung ...
Dear Samsung,
Please can you move the WiFi Power Save Mode Toggle from the Service Menu and place it in the standard Settings Menus. Also make this setting persistent between boots.
On certain AP hardware and/or configurations, the Power Save Mode does no saving at all, in fact in my experience it just causes a huge mess. The culprit is spotty/erratic WiFi connectivity which causes all the background sync/update tasks to go in retry loop heaven (with wakelocks galore). These background tasks in retry loops hammer the processor continuously such that it start heating up (& draining more battery than normal).
So please implement this small change so that it can save many a lot of headaches.
Thanks.

Heating is a big deal for me. S4 is a lot more hotter then my former S3, and not because of the CPU. For me it's because of the modem. Root might be related also (I had my doubts on this) ... some apps keeping the 3G up more then needed, but I don't want to speculate more ...
PS: there are others "overheating" posts , a lot of them.
Same issue here (thread here), my brother has the same model and we tryed use same apps on both S4's, his S4 does not heat but mine does. so something wrong with my S4
i think the rom is causing all the overheating issue.
when i used stock, it would heat up that i can't touch it
now using phoenix rom 2.0 for 9500, and only get a slight warmth
My first smart phone was an Galaxy S2, and it got hot, i had two replacements they were the same, i then realized smart phones with powerful cpu/gpu`s just get hot when they work hard, i had had a few smartphones since the S2 from a few different manufactures and they all get hot, now i have an htc one, and it gets hot so it`s totally normal.
what i have realized with android is that you can get a faulty app or system process that really kills the cpu/gpu for no reason and they need to be shutdown/killed.
So i started using an app called watchdog, just change the settings to monitor system processes as well.

My phone was overheating as well, and I found out the culprit was media server. It got confused with some old thumbnails I had on my old SD card (from my galaxy S3), I had thousands of pictures there, so I guess it was constantly scanning it.
So delete all the thumbnails, (there's a folder .thumbnails in DCIM I believe) or even better yet, if you can, format your external SD card, and copy the files you need on it again. then mediaserver will work hard one more time and that's it.
Alternatively, you can download Rescan Media ROOT, and disable the media scanner, and enable it when you need it (but that's not desirable for me, I'm always updating my media, so I prefer it being automatic, depends on you usage)

The S4 does heat up quite often, what version you using? I would recommend to use KT kernel to underclock and undervolt so it doesn't heat up as much

Hey guys,
i noticed my phone was getting a little hot while i had the navagtion app going.
im using the S4 flip cover and right under the back camera, where it says Samsung - I felt the phone getting hot.
Anyone experience this?

It's always hot.
I mean it gets hot often.
Of course it gets hot because the CPU is right there.

Loool really? Its always under charge when i play or the battery drops in 2 hours i disconnect sometime when it become too hot

Using while charging is fine unless it is overheating.
The reason it's recommended not to use the phone while charging is because it reaches high temperatures much faster and so is more likely to overheat causing hardware problems
I personally don't game while charging since this phone (especially i9505) gets really hot really fast

yes i know that heating its very rapid while under charge..expecially now that its so hot during day and cant dissipate...in may when i bought s4 had less problem
i think i must think to buy an extended battery to play more than 2 hours hehehe are they already on stores?
Almost every good phone gets hot now and then. My rooted S4 barely gets hot. I mean i flashed a great rom (omega rom) and flashed an amazing kernel (perseus) and played a bit with cpu voltages and i undervolted my cpu and it barely gets hot , and when it does , it does not get very hot .

I thought I was going crazy, but YES, the phone gets unusualy hot just below the camera.
I noticed this right after performing the Apps2SD update, and since then have been freaking out!
I am afraid that constant heating and cooling of this kind can damage the sensitive parts inside,
so I have been limiting my use of the phone in the last few days.
People, this is not normal. Somebody needs to contact Samsung.
There must be a software patch for this...?!

Reboot if you haven't already. See if it gets hot again. If it does, backup your phone and do a factory reset. If its still running hot, definitely exchange it.
The phone definitely shouldn't overheat like how you described it. That's not normal

Check which processes are running amuck via developer options then cpu.Usuallythe one causing cpu load can be found by googling.
If there is oneconstantly asking a lot of cpu, uninstall it. Or try factory reset without restoring but by reinstalling through playstore.

Need to define your terms. My OG Droid could exceed 120F on the surface of the custom copper heatsink I built for it. THAT was quite warm.
My GNex screen surface would routinely exceeed 100F when running GPS/nav, streaming BT audio, and charging.
My G2 hasn't yet reached 100F on the surface of the screen (hottest area I could find). I haven't pushed really hard yet, but so far it doesn't seem to run any hotter than any other high performance phone I've had.
I have experience strange thing on my LG G2. When I am on Kitkat it works great, battery is very good and no overheating issues but when I upgrade or flash it to Lollipop then my phone behaves strange it gets overheating for normal use and battery drains fast.. Can any one solve this?
If I flash Dorimanx Kernel on Lollipop, will it solve the problem??
whilst charging my g2 it has overheated and melted the area around the charging port this is a very dangerous phone

Hello everyone, I recently purchased a new note 4 St N910C. Just after a day of usage I felt that it is getting hot when I play games on it. I closed all the background apps even resetted it but still no luck. My phone is getting heated up near the camera area. My question is that is this a hardware issue or a software one, because if it is a hardware issue I should try and get it replaced, if a software one I should better wait for a lollipop update.
Any suggestions would be gratefully appreciated
Thanks

Well i bought this unit after along study of whether to get the exynos version or the snapdragon version, in my opinion I found the exynos to be better because many users suggested that this version does not heat up and works better, but now as I'm using it personally I think it heats up alot, the temperature I get is around 36-38 degrees.

Galaxy Note 4 heating [camera]
I purchased Galaxy Note 4 [SM-N910G] a week back. It's on Android 4.4.4 (KitKat)
I am having a different problem for which I could not find any satisfying solution on the Internet. Whenever I open camera app, the phone starts heating up near camera & battery also drains very quickly [around 2% under 5 min.]
I know that the phone will heat up a little bit when playing high graphics games, but I don't think it should heat up too much when using camera app.
I have already factory reset [both soft & hard reset] the phone, but still it does not help. I contacted Samsung support, & they told me to 'Reset app preferences' from Application manger, but still the device heats up when using camera app.
I also cleared data of the camera app, but still the issue remains
The phone does not heat up at all on standby mode, but opening camera app raises it's temperature more than it should. Previously a Note 2 user, this problem was not there.
Anyone else experiencing the same issue on Note 4 ? Any ideas on this ?
The phone heats up only if you're recording 4k or 2k video. If you use camera generally & your device heats up.You must get your device checked

You can factory reset all day, it won't help. Thats not a problem, the camera just uses a lot of processor power and thus generates heat. You can't change that, you have to live with it

Sorry, but do you have any idea about CPU temperatures? 60 isn't bad. 40 isn't bad. 30 isn't bad. Even 70° and occasionally 79° would be acceptable. Don't put your phone into the freezer, ity not good to freeze the hardware.. Especially if you literally have no problem. The CPU is prone to temperature fluctuations and your values are fully normal in the world of CPUs. There is no best value, everything up to 70° is the normal temperature variation. Your phone doesn't have a problem, its perfectly fine.
Mine actually heats up while charging and using at same time. Clean master shows 70-75°C cpu temperature while using browser and stuff but 80+ while gaming, that's not normal right? I'm worried cuz I always used my old phones while charging and they never got this hot, I feel like it will melt someday :/ In what temperatures exynos operates?
I got my SM-N910F yesterday and installed LP 5.0.1 via OTA. Temperatures are 40+ when the phone isnt doing anything. While I did the Antutu Benchmark, it was around 50-52 degrees (Celsius). Feels much warmer than my previous Note 3 (which of course never had LP). And since i am not used to this temparature on my Note 3, i kinda worry about the temps right now. I read a lot that many have that problem since LP update. So whats normal and what would be too high for regular usage (not using Camera or playing Games) ? Is there an average i can go by and compare ?
And whats my alternatives now if I want lower temps , go back to 4.4.4 Stock Rom (currently have LP 5.0.1 Stock) or do I try a 5.x Custom ROM . Did the Custom ROMS fixed these heating problems or is that just something I have to live with ?
Thanks for any help.

Some phones are great to take camping because if you play Asphalt 8 long enough, the back warms up to the ideal temperature that can bake bread. Rate this thread to express the extent to which the Samsung Galaxy S9 stays cool under extended heavy use. A higher rating indicates that even when playing strenuous games for long periods of time, the phone doesn't get uncomfortably warm.
Then, drop a comment if you have anything to add!
Just got an S9 today, I agree about the heat. Though I've found using power saving modes cpu limiter helps a lot.
my device only gets warm when its in direct sunlight, otherwise its staying pretty cool, ive had some people in our groups talk about it too but what ive seen people say none had the issues you said, that sounds pretty serious, maybe ask around in our group, its in my signature

I use my phone plenty. My wife uses here S9 a WHOLE LOT. Neither of us have heat issues. I am pretty confident that it is because they are not Exynos based phones as it seems most (If not all) in this thread that are complaining about heat are Exynos phone owners.
Exynos based model here, heat is very reasonable especialy when I keep my good old s5+ in mind. During light tasks like whatsapp twitter or watching video's the phone doesn't noticbilly warm up. Browsing the web (for a long time) and some 2D Games make the phone heating up a little but nothing special. Playing some graphicly heavy games does warm the device up but I've so far even with longer gaming sesions never got my peformance dropped signicantly. It just kept peforming like it should. in contrary to my old galaxy s5 which would throttle it's gpu clock within 10 (mostly within 5!) minutes of playing a graphicly intensive game. The device would become very hot. Altough this one can also generate quite some heat if you really push it, but holds up way better with prolonged gaming sessions peformance wise. Really can't complain about it.

Ya, we are indeed rocking Snapdragon models. It really makes me wonder why Samsung even bothers with the Exynos. They either screw them up or don't support them or don't include LTE support (S3) and so on and so on...
I had my phone overheat once, to the point it's really burning to touch. It happened just awhile ago while outside and installing the gcam port which they said has working portrait mode, I tried it, it does not fc but it does not get the job done, and it only makes my phone lag. I guess the overheat came from that gcam and the outside environment. I couldnt help but restart my phone, now everything works normal again. S9 Exy.

Yes, it also work for me!
Thanks
thanks sir
Mine usually heats up after a few mins of using Snapchat. I don’t play games so can’t comment on them.
Well, the heat exist only because you have hot weather like me here @ Greece. Today with 34 Celsius without A/C. the device was untouched.. after the first update (i buy it today lol)
But i use it 5-6 hours all the time with 4g open, facebook, messenger, instagram, a lot of videos and photos and device was perfect without heat or something..
Btw i left from my home at 19:00 with 86% battery and i came home with 14% at 23:00 I think it's perfect.

Same thing happened with me today after installing the gcam mod, restarting phone helps, everything became normal again... Also S9 Exynos user.
I'm a heavy gamer (Exynos Version). The phone heats up to 43 degrees Celsius (109.4 fahrenheit) when playing for about half an hour.
Why? Because in the middle east the temperature is already 36 degrees Celsius right now.
