[Q] Galaxy Tab A 10.1 2016 (SM-T580) Root help - Samsung Galaxy Tab A series Questions & Answers

I'm hoping to root this 10.1" Galaxy Tab A 2016 model (aka SM-T580) which is running android Oreo 8.1. I can't seem to find a guide that says it will work on these tablets which are running 8.1. So can someone can either guide me themselves or link me somewhere that can. Preferably a no PC method. But methods that do require a PC are fine too. I'm familiar with ODIN as well as Android Fastboot etc.
I found this method but it doesn't specify if it will work on Oreo 8.1 or not -

I made THIS little guide after rooting my T585 running Oreo end of last year. Your T580 is basically the same (just without LTE), you simply need to replace any gtaxllte downloads with the gtaxlwifi versions. :good:
I have since then updated to Pie custom roms and everything is still running fine
Good luck :fingers-crossed:

Is there way to root this tablet without having to flash TWRP?

I guess if you installed the Magisk Manager app it might be able to root your boot image ... you'd have to extract it, let Magisk patch it and then flash it via adb.
Just a guess though, I didn't try it on this device. Flashing Magisk through TWRP is so much easier

Apparently not. Methods vary according to which version of Android you have. I think eveyone has 8.1 by now, and I'll assume you have it also. So far, the following is the easiest method to follow. Here's the tutorial from You Tube that I know works. You can use Magisk 18 (which I have provided) or 18.1, both work for the device.

That's not even the current version - 19.3 is and can be downloaded via the original Magisk thread.

Have you rooted your device? I don't know if the 19.1 version works. I know the 18.0 and 18.1 do. Try it with the version 19 and let us know.

My devices are all running 19.3 and doing fine - phone, SM-T585 and my TV box :good:

Anyone confirm this Magisk rooting method will still pass safetynet on Android 7.0

Hello
I've read around this a lot here and elsewhere and I can't seem to get a definitive answer as to the best solution to the root I'd like. I would like to use TiBu and play PokemonGO (and perhaps use the Barclays UK banking app). It looked like Magisk was the way to do this with Nougat 7.0. This video:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CjwSjiE76o8
Which is also shown here in a series of screenshots:
http://galaxys7root.com/galaxy-s7-s...s7-or-s7-edge-on-android-7-0-nougat-w-magisk/
...would seem to do what I want. But I expect I would use updated versions of Magisk etc.
I can see threads on here that would indicate that Magisk is now not able to help you pass safetynet with a rooted phone but I think that may be for updated versions of Android and 7.0 may still be OK.
Can anyone confirm that the rooting method shown here is sensible. Or, failing that, the best way to achieve what I want with a currently stock G930FD running 7.0?
Thanks
Maqgisk does by pass safetynet.
Magisk has it own root now built in.
the links you have provided user older versions of magisk without dated installation methods.
Install twrp on your phone then magisk v.14. you do not need any other files.

Thanks! That's the kind of definitive answer I was looking for.
Btw, which Android version are you on? I have an update available that I can download but not sure I should. As I said, I'm on 7.0 so not sure what I'd end up on if I updated.
As I like TouchWiz but would like to reduce the bloat, I am tempted by the Superman ROM, which makes the update point moot.

It depends on the specific model -- there are many custom builds for various prepaid and postpaid carriers. If you search the forums you may find the information you are looking for.
For example, after reviewing the forum topics, it appears my J7 Sky Pro 727vl from Tracfone does not so far have a root available.
Hi dear
I own a device J7 2017 (j730f) I suggest you use the official ROM Oreo with the root (Magisk)
I use it and it works perfectly, of course. After disabling some non-important applications and for RAM and battery the same efficiency as the previous Android 7.0
There are several explanations on this site for the root

Samsung Galaxy Tab 4(SM-T530) with Android 5.0.2 looking for newer Android version

Hi, as the title says I have a Samsung Galaxy Tab 4(SM-T530) with Android 5.0.2 and I wonder if it is possible to have a newer Android version installed on it? Or maybe a custom rom?
I have done some searching but I can't find the required info.
Thanks for any help.
I did search but cannot find anything...help is appreciated.

Hi DJABHipHop,
Thanks for all the work you've done.
I have a Sumsung SM-T530 (matissewifixx)
OS: Lollipop 5.0.2
Bootloader: T530XXU1BQB2
After a quick learning curve I've been following the https://www.getdroidtips.com/lineage-os-17-1-galaxy-tab-4-10-1#Pre-Requirements article:
1) Used Odin3-v3.10.6.exe to root my device
2) Installed the latest TWRP 3.0.0-0-.matisse.img <-- It appears you're using a newer version (TWRP-3.2.3-0_matissewifi-180918.img) - question to follow
3) Attempted (unsuccessfully) to install the lightning-17.1-20201012-UNOFFICIAL-matissewifi-Unsweetened-XDA-BUILD
I receive an Error 7 - basically not identifying my device correctly from what the error says
Now the article actually mentions this exact issue...
To install Lineage OS 17.1 on your Samsung Galaxy Tab 4 10.1, you need to unlock bootloader and running the latest TWRP Recovery. If you are on the old version, you will see error 7 warning text while installing the custom ROM on Galaxy Tab 4 10.1 (matisse) device.

3.0.0-0 isn't the latest TWRP. Check https://forum.xda-developers.com/tab-4/development/recovery-twrp-recovery-matisse-millet-t4019831 and install matisse version. Then, you can install lfr 17.1 or los 16.

Thanks matteo,
Your tip/link has worked I've now upgraded to twrp-3.4.0-3-matisse and the 17.1 OS install has now been successful.
Good advice on the 'external' blogs... my next step is to install the 'GApps', that 'external' blog suggested some more external links to get the right Apps, more confusing for a newbie that the original article...
any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Best root process?

I’m going to wait a little bit before doing my root. I had a Galaxy Tab S 10.5 recently die on me. I tried replacing the charging port and the battery but the thing was still dead. So I ordered an S5e. It should be arriving tomorrow. I’m just curious what everyone is doing with it now. I did a quick search and it looks like root is available now. But the instructions I found are outdated saying a recovery method (TWRP) wasn’t available but there was a news announcement saying it now was. So I’m kind of lost.
Like I said, I want to play around with it unmodded for a while before I root it. Just looking for a clear cut “best” way to go about doing it and seeing what the most recommended options are.
On my s10 I remember having TWRP as the recovery and Cyanogen was the OS.
Thanks!

I spent the whole weekend in my new s5e wifi edition, the truth as follows:
There are 4 ROMs for this tablet:
Original (shipped with Samsung ROM, Android 9) - Everything works fine, antutu v8 183k, but full of crapware from Samsung, suspicious apps and services, don't waste your time doing root on this ROM
LineageOS 16 (Android 9) - So far the best ROM at this moment, antutu v8 183k too, stable and HDMI issues too, but there is a workaround, (look my other HDMI problem thread)
LineageOS 17 (Android 10) - Trebuchet launcher crashing constantly, HDMI issues so I didn't test antutu because felt too unstable, so I gave up too
LuisROM - antutu v8 170k and HDMI issues too, so I gave up
I installed all the ROMs using TWRP, the root just works with magisk, the official LOS16 root su zip doesn't work. Once you have the TWRP installed you can just install the magisk .zip the same way you do with the ROMs, then the magisk manager will appear installed automatically where you can check the root status. Good luck!

Why not root the original rom and delete as much crapware as possible after root? That was my plan when my tab S5e will arrive.
You speak about TWRP but in this guide: https://forum.xda-developers.com/tab-s5e/how-to/galaxy-tab-s5e-sm-t720-root-t3947806 and that is the only decent one I could find, they explain that TWRP does not work on the Tab S5e because of changes Samsung made. Are yu saying that TWRP works?

Those posts are a reference, dont follow their procedures hoping that will work as they described... yes I AM using TWRP it works, get from their website "twrp-3.3.1-4-gts4lvwifi.img.tar" and "vbmeta.tar" then via ODIN, flash them, one each time, rebooting after the process. Once you have the TWRP installed, you can play around with any ROM and do the root as I explained before. I don't trust in a ROM full of crapware, its my point of view, cleaning based on tests you can never be sure if there is nothing left stealing your data or forcing updates or whatever samsung decides... so LOS is the way, clean, open-source, nothing to hide.

that is amazing news....I would love to try this out with my device and downloaded the files you suggested. I also found "PGP Signature vbmeta.tar.asc", do I need that too?
I have to admit that I have not much experiencing rooting...I only installed TWRP on my Samsung J5 phone years ago and after that I loaded another rom (I think lineage) on it. a stripped down version that offered more intern memory and that is still running smooth on my phone today.
So would it be possible to give me some more advice? Is it correct that I have to connect the S5e with Odin by booting it in download mode? And can you tell me where I have to load the files in Odin? Is it in the AP section?
And are there options I have to enable in Odin? (I heard something about a reboot option you have to enable or disable).
I hope you can help me with those questions. What model of tab are you using btw? Is it a 720 ?
Thanx in advance,
Jan

TB-8304F1 Tab 8 - Stuck on Android 7.0
Hi, apologies if this isn't the correct way to do this.
I too have a Lenovo Tab E8 which I just purchased and found I cannot upgrade it beyond 7.0
Details are:
Model : TB-8304F
Kernel: 3.18.35
Build: TB-8304F_S000030_190227_ROW
Does anyone know if there is a way to update this to a later version of Android. I have never rooted any of my android devices so this will be new to me.
Thanks, Shane
No, there are no available roms for this device so operating system cannot be updated beyond 7.
The only thing possible is to temporarily root (which resets after each reboot) and install some apps with root access. SetCpu did not work for me to increase speed
