Hi all,
Wondering if anyone knows how to make Android open the ports necessary for incoming connections for server apps to work without having to ping the client first under su?
Or failing that, is there a way to run a script that will ping the client IP instead of having to run the command by hand in terminal?
Thanks!

Second that! Something's off in 99/100 ROMS, TCP doesn't seem to do anything. Only one Sense ROM by cotulla seems to work.
I disabled the adblocking hosts file to test if it had anything to do with it (e.g. SSHDroid doesn't work with it) but that didn't help anything either
Agreed, does not seem to work on any rom I've tried, only Cotulla's 'Stock Desire' Sense build seems to work (this one: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=893620).
Too bad Sense's so completely dire, otherwise I'd use that. I want CyanogenMOD.
Having the same question. I am sure here must be someone who knows how to enable inbound connections....
Little update:
I noticed it is possible for me to ping and use all services when using the gateway to access everything, in my case the access point/wifi router.
So it looks like this is some kind of routing/firewall issue but I can't find anything about default blocking or firewalling on android...
Good news. I found out what is causing this on almost every build.
It has something to do with the stock wifi tethering. If you try and enable it in almost every rom it will fail, but now turn on your wifi again and everything works as it would normally do!
The build it does work on also has working stock wifi tethering, so that explains that...
For now it's good to have this workaround and I hop to have a proper fix in the future
im using RAFDROID 3.0 and i dont think i have this problem at all. I tried SwiFTP and it connected without any issues.
Try to update the busybox version mine is 1.15.2

I tried this on Frankinstine's awesome ROM, but no cigar. There has to be a firewall rule or setting we can tweak to allow this kind of traffic...

It works for me, but it's not 100% foolproof. It seems to work for a while, but not permanently. However, it's still better than the ping method. The ping method would never work for me, since I use Wifi at least 4 different places a week. Even when done automatically, how would I know what to ping on what Wifi network?! Random DHCP on workstations notwithstanding...
This does it for me:
turn on normal Wifi
wait around 10 seconds (for Wifi to 'start')
turn on Wifi hotspot (normal wifi should turn it self off automatically)
wait around 20 seconds (the hotspot takes a while to 'start', it actually fails (error) for me, but still does the trick)
turn normal Wifi on again
At that point it "works" for me, at least for a while.
At the very least this seems to indicate that the broken Wifi hotspot and this problem are related -- on Cotulla's build (where stock Wifi hotspot WORKS), this problem is non-existent.
Unfortunatly your steps do not work for me :-(

That's unlucky. Those steps seem to "work" for me on CleanDroid 1.30. Maybe we can just hope it works again when the stock wifi hotspot is fixed.
Alternate "solution":
Get Cotulla's "Stock Desire" ROM: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=893620
It definitely works on that. Too bad sense is dog****, and your battery will last for a day max.

Just tried this and it worked. As soon as I started the wifi the second time my computer started pinging HD2.
My usual procedure for fixing this was to start wifi, see assigned IP address and then ping my computer from 'Net Ping' app. This can be faster sometimes.
Is there a way to port hotspot from Cotulla's build to a nonSense build? No way for me to come back to sense again

Don't know, it's probably in the kernel, so shouldn't be too difficult, but then again, I haven't really got a clue about building ROMs.

, some regular dont't support it .
Even if they would want you to have it enabled, there are two factors:
1. The hardware supporting WiFi AP mode - as MS uses AP mode (to have more clients) rather AdHoc (that supports every chipset) - AP mode ISN'T supported by all WP7 phones! I will check drivers to see what chipset does O7 use.
2. DRIVERS! If the hardware supports it, Sammy will deliver drivers hopefuly.
Yeah, just read some news its up to the chipset and drivers. Will be there in the next updare.. But, older phones might not be getting tethering at all! Lame.. oh well, its time to get a dongle and mend it into my asus tranzformer lol
but at least the USB tethering is working

I'd like that too
does the optimus 7 support AP mode? (infrastructure! NOT ad-hoc!)
USB tethering is done via Diagnostic tool, where you switch from Zune Sync mode to USB Tethering mode and do some playing on PC with it.
And WiFi hotspot is done via few registry edits, check out WP7 dev forums . Omnia7 and Focus have got it working!

Try this click on the keypad and dial ##634# , then dial *#7284#, select Modem, Tethered Call, click Ok your phone should restart, plug the phone into PC, go to control panel -> system -> hardware -> device manager, click on modems, you should see (samsung mobile modem) or something of the same, right click it and click properties, click advanced, add this code (+cgdcont=1,"ip","internet") as is, click ok, now set up a new connection,Control Panel -> Network and Sharing Center (or Network Connection) -> Change your network settings -> Set up a new connection or network,Set up a dail-up connection -> next, select SAMSUNG Mobile Modem (this modem could be name difference),enter *99# as Dail-up phone number, and leave username and password blank and click connect, good luck
I don't get this? You want WIFI Tether???
It has already been done and confirmed on Omnia 7 and HD7 as far as I know... works just great on my Omnia 7.
Thanks to these guys.

Hi everyone.
So Im on prepaid Tmobile (don't really if that affects it).
It used to be flawless in my past android devices. Here, w/ USB it installs the adb driver successfully, then just nothing.
With Wifi Tethering the network shows up there is not internet when connected.
Please help! Im on stock everything except unlocked bootloader
EDIT: It works when USB debugging is on.
Maybe it's the Pre-Paid. Might give you limited abilities.

but it works when I have USB debugging on...
Hello & many thanks in advance!
For some odd reason my hotspot has stopped all functionality. When trying to enable it from the quick settings menu the Hotspot icon will highlight as if it's activated but is not functioning when searching for that network (ie. hotspot AP). When flicked inside the settings panel one of two things happen: the button for the hotspot is trigger and under it displays "error" or it quickly reverts back to the off position immediately after pressing it.
I would greatly appreciate any and all help as this has been my main use for when I'm at school and want to use a VPN or simply download at much much faster speeds than the provided WiFi (which is very...slow).
Edit1: I'm actually on ElementalX for my kernel.
Edit2: FIXED: Updated the ElementalX Kernel and now hotspot is working perfectly!
thanks

Which carrier are you on? Hotspot is supposed to disconnect Wi-Fi when it first starts. Try manually toggling off Wi-Fi first and then try Hotspot again. No? Enable disable airplane mode and try again. If still not working try posting in the PN forum.
This is a known issue. You need to use custom kernel (ElementalX or Franco).

My carrier is T-Mobile. I've tried both suggestions, toggling off WiFi manually and then turning on the Hotspot- the same error and problem exists. As for the airplane mode I also tried that to no avail, good suggestions however

SOLVED
Solved it, I updated my ElementalX kernel and Hotspot functionality was restored.
Curious to know if the community is having tethering issues since going to Nougat.
Tethering does turn on and it does work to an extent but it'll either turn off whenever it wants or it'll simply stop serving requests. There is not a set amount of time for either before experiencing the issue. I'm pointing this issue directly at the tethering aspect as the phone will always browse and do anything as expected even tho the tethering clients are unable to. Even when the clients are unable to browse I can still ping the exact website that will not load. I can even curl those pages and get data back..
Here's what I've tried:
- Disabled adblocker on the phone
- Kept phone awake
- Connected to the charger
- Disconnected from the charger
- added net.tethering.noprovisioning=true to the build.prop
- Nuked and paved with different ROMs
Going to try installing a different tethering app to see if that works. UPDATE: This also produced the same results
I can connect to another 6p not running nougat and everything works as expected with the same computer so that rules out the computer.
Anyone else running into this issue? Anyone have a fix?
Thanks

Verizon also using EX kernel. It's almost like some sort of cache fills up
Thank you!!! I thought it was just my phone hardware maybe. Having the same exact issue once I hit the official version of nougat. It didn't pop up until I believe thr 5th developer release as an issue. It really annoys me either streaming or online gaming it'll just cut out. I am really close to just going back to one of the developer previews that it did not occur on. Please anybody who can fix this issue or needs anything like a logcat, let me know.

What carrier are you on? Tethering can mean Wi-Fi, USB, or BT. I guess you are talking about the Wi-Fi hotspot because it's the most commonly used. My Wi-Fi hotspot is working fine on AT&T, although I haven't used it for gaming. Haven't heard back from OP, but I think he may be talking about Wi-Fi as well? You could try changing frequencies under advanced settings to toggle the hotspot to use 5Ghz instead of 2.4Ghz if you haven't tried that (and your equipment supports it).
I was having same issue also running latest PN, EX 4.04, radio/bootloader & vender.
This seemed to help but just started yesterday.
In Terminal Emulator, enter below code one by one:
su
settings put global tether_dun_required 0
exit
------------------------------------------------------
Reboot
Now if I could figure out how to stop adding a network every time I connect to hotspot with cp when I turn hotspot off & back on.
I'm thinking this could me a Verizon unlimited thing since not many people have anymore & very few people have stated issues.
Update: The above is not going to cut it! Hotspot seems to hang on longer but still disconnects!
I have Verizon, and yes, I am speaking to*Hotspot tethering. I have this issue only on Nougat. When I use a*Marshmallow based rom it doesn't happen. I use my hotspot as my home internet (laptops, smart tv, tablets, smartphones) and all of them drop connection after random intervals (most times after an hour to few hours). Not until the DPs for 7.1 did a change in the way it failed happened. Before those DPs, it would shut off and the notification icon would disappear (hotspot actually off). After*the DPs for 7.1 started, the tethering would still be on (on the*6P) but no device would show that it was on (in range). I have to shut it off, then*turn it back on. I use stock, Cortex or PN mostly. Root or no root. I also do not use custom kernels unless they come with the rom, although I have tried a couple to see if it would fix it. It didn't.*I have always attributed it to either faulty hardware somehow or DOZE improvements that kicked in. The DOZE came to mind as it almost seems as the phone is trying to*get into deeper sleep. I don't know. Any help would be appreciated.
Same issues with pixel, some said it works others did not.

Yes for wifi tethering.
Well cannot seem to find anything on disconnect solving issues, posted solutions seem to be if tethering does not work at all.
Hope someone can solve.

Laptop I'm using only does 2.4.
Was never a problem with the HTC M8 on MM, just recently bought the 6P.
Thanks
Had another laptop that had that had a 2.4 / 5Ghz dual wireless card.
Holds wifi hotspot with no disconnects whatsoever, longest time connected was 2.5 hours.
I will have to settle for usb tether on the 2.4 laptop for now until the wiser ones can find cause.
Just ran into this issue on the 6p running 8.0 beta 3. Seem related to the data encryption of the wifi hotspot. Turning encryption seems to solve the problem. However, I would say that is not really a solution, unless you don't running unsecured hotspot.
Edit: Turns out it only helps. Not a solution. Still disconnects just not as often often.
