Please help: failed update, how do I get back on track? - OnePlus 6T Questions & Answers

Hey folks,
I tried to flash 9.0.13 yesterday inside the phone via disabling Magisk etc, this worked in the past. However after doing that yesterday I'm stuck in fastboot. I tried to flash TWRP via the AllInOne tool, got into TWRP once and tried to adb sideload the OTA to flash it but it would not go. Flashing via adb or trying to copy files onto the phone via adb is not working.
I tried to flash the OTA via the AllInOne tool but would get below error.
So since I can get into TWRP, my question is, how do I load the OTA zip into the phone to flash it?
What can I do?

As far as I understand reading this correctly, this is only if it says device corrupt? That's not the case here.

did you download the correct OTA zip? if you can enter fastboot, you should be able to fastboot boot TWRP.img. From there you can flash the correct OTA(1.62gb zip)

That will get you back to stock, non-rooted OOS.
There's TONS of threads that will walk you through this.

I flashed Malladus stock 4.4.2 rom on my VS980 but wanted to try AOSP. I was watching tv when I was wiping everything to prepare the AOSP rom flash. I accidentally formatted internal storage and now I cant restore my backup file or flash any other rom i had stored on my phone or go into download mode. I think I really bricked my G2 this time. If anyone knows how to fix this please help me out thank you!

On PhilZ you can use a usb drive to flash your rom... Or if you have a less functional recovery you can just use LGflash to restart from the start.. you are far from bricked dude..

I have TWRP 2.7.0.0. Which is the only screen i can boot into at this point. I do have the LG Flash tool installed on my pc that i have used before to get out of trouble. But since i flashed the 24a bootstack and rom, now i cant get into download mode so the the flash tool does not recognize my phone. is there a different method to go about it using the lf flash tool? There is a file that i should have flashed that allows me to get back my download mode after flashing 24a bootstack, but i never flashed it and now my whole storage is wiped. I appreciate your help.

Nexus 6p Root Failure / Boot Loop / Android 6.0.1

I tried to root my Nexus 6P and now I'm stuck. It won't finish booting. I followed instructions found on the web. I unlocked bootloader with no problem. I copied the latest SuperSU file to the phone. I installed TWRP recovery. However, I could not find the SuperSU file when using TWRP. Nevertheless, when I went to exit, TWRP asked if I wanted to instal SuperSU. I recall reading somewhere that it will install the wrong version of SuperSU (not the one for 6.0.1). Somehow I must have hit the wrong selection because it installed it anyway. Now I have an infinite loop.
I have tried to factory reset with TWRP. That fails. I downloaded the 6.0.1 images files from Google. I tried to run flash-all.bat, but that doesn't work. I have pushed images and ZIPs to the /sdcard/ folder with ADB. ADB recognizes the device, but fastboot does not (when connected to my laptop) (which is why flash-all doesn't work). I have tried to install the images/zips with TWRP. However, I always get "failed" messages. I get messages that partitions won't load.
Stupidly, I do not have a nandroid backup (yes, I know, a dumb move).
Any suggestions on what to try next? I'm at my wit's end with this. I've searched the web all morning and found all kinds of helpful info, but I can't find anything to get me past this point. I am perfectly willing to wipe it all out and start over again if I could just force it to do that. I just bought it so I suppose I could return it (I think there's a 30-day return policy), but Google might not like it if it comes back in this state, I suppose. I had an AT&T Galaxy Note 5 for half a day but found out, after the fact, that I can't root it.
Thanks for any help or suggestions.
Why did you follow instructions found on "Web" when u have the beautiful guide by our @Heisenberg? Read this thread. Instead of running flash - all. Bat file, follow the instructions in this guide. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=3206928

I saw that post. I wish I had followed it. However, the instructions are very similar to what I tried, although not exact. Where I went wrong is letting TWRP install SuperSU for me. I didn't mean to but when I touched the phone it installed it (of course, I hit something, but I don't know what). Fastboot does not recognize the phone in recovery. I can follow Heisenberg's instructions to get back to stock IF fastboot would recognize the phone. ADB recognizes the phone. Would it be possible to use ADB Sideload instead? How can I force fastboot to recognize the phone? If I could do that, I would be able to flash images back to the phone. Thanks!
U should try fastboot in bootloader / download mode instead of recovery mode..
OK, two comments: Duh (as I slap my head) and Bless You! That worked. I'm back to stock. At least the phone works now. I'll try again to root following Heinsenberg's instructions! Thanks. Where do I sent the beer money?

Well, I'm back to a stock phone, anyway. Flashing SuperSU per Heinsenberg's instructions did not give me root. Oh well. I'll keep trying. It did install and it did reboot just fine. However, root checker says I have no root and Titanium Backup won't run, either. Thanks.

New update to fix voLTE 911 bug...

So this morning I got an update to fix the voLTE bug. I'm unlocked with twrp installed and rooted. Just for the sake of experimenting I tried installing it. Well that didn't work. Just gets stuck in twrp recovery and you have to power the phone off completely to get it to boot. I guess my question (even though it's a little early) is there a way to install the update without reverting back to stock?
EDIT: Link to the zip
https://drive.google.com/open?id=0BxqNotAWlwLUQ1Fzcjc2YXd4QzA
I don't believe so.
In the past you either had to go back to stock or wait on someone to create a compatible update for rooted devices.
Can you post link to zip?
If you are rooted, you can find the zip in cache folder in recovery.
Can you add what variant and build you are using before the update? Also the build afterwards?

Yeah I can't find anything in that folder either.
I received the update and applied it. I am not rooted.
I have the XT1687 model.
My current build number is NPN25.137-35
My device BL unlocked, TWRP installed and rooted with magisck.
I'm getting the update notification and splash screens several times daily.
Anyone rooted try installing the update with Flashfire app?

If you have systemless supersu, you should just be able to apply the update after reverting to stock recovery.
So I found where the zip downloads. I wonder what flashing it in twrp would do?
EDIT: Here's the link to the zip and I've put it in the OP.

OK, so I tried flashing recovery.img from stock firmware build 33. But the OTA update will not install, instead I get an error after downloading and rebooting (red triangle at recovery mode).
So I tried fully reverting to stock firmware but I decided to skip over erasing userdata. Afterward the OTA downloaded and installed successfully. Keeping userdata does not seem to have caused an issue.
My problem now though is how to get root back without having to wipe userdata after re-flashing TWRP.
Or is this not possible and if I want to root I must first wipe userdata so that TWRP can read internal memory?

Just tried flashing it with TWRP and no luck:
Verifying current system....
E3002: Package expects build thumbprint of 7.0/NPN25.137-35/37:user/release-keys or 7.0/NPN25.137-33/35:user/release-keys; this device has .
Updated process ended with ERROR: 7
which doesn't make much sense since I rooted the stock ROM (Build number reads NPN25.137-33).
If your using a custom recovery flash the stock recovery, then go to the stock recovery and using your computer flash using adb sideboard command. I assume you already know how to do this. Hope that helps.

I'm stuck in the same boat... no idea how to flash the stock recovery and sideboard, what that even means, or if that would break root. I just followed the step-by-step "how to root" video when I first got the phone
There's a workaround to disable the "advanced LTE" or whatever it was called, so I did that. But in the meantime until a more "user friendly" means of updating is available, is there a way I can get rid of this nag screen? Way back on an earlier device (Samsung Charge?) I remember manually editing a "build.prop" file or something to match the latest version so I wouldn't keep getting the software update nag. Is there something that will do the same here, or is there a system app I can freeze in TiB?
My best guess is freezing "Moto Actions 03.022.1.4-N" because it's showing "(updated)" on the side.

What he means is you need to download the stock rom, unzip it, then boot phone to bootloader mode and connect to PC. Then flash the recovery.IMG from the stock rom folder with command prompt:
Fastboot flash recovery recovery.img
Then you can on the phone tell it to boot to recovery mode. This will be a screen with Android on his back and the words NO Command on the bottom. Then plug to PC and use adb command to sideload the update zip like this:
adb sideload [nameofupdatefile].Zip

Strange, reflashed the stock recovery and adb can't see it (adb devices returns nothing). And when trying to install it via the normal OTA way, the stock recovery tries to install but ends with an error.
That's what happened to me when I tried reverting to stock recovery and then trying to install update from phone Settings app.
I ended up having to revert to stock rom to get ota to apply with settings app. But now I am trying to root again but after installing TWRP data is encrypted again. So looks like I will have to wipe data before re-rooting.

To update my rooted phone to B182 I had to download the full package (2.3gb, including update.zip and update_full_WASL21A_hw_eu.zip). I was not successfull in updating via TWRP. I updated via the official system menu so I don't know how exactly it was applied. How do I update my 6T rooted without erasing datas?

Dear all,
first of all I would like to be sorry if I'm saying something worng. I'm not so expert about Android world.
I've got a OnePlus 6T that I've rooted with the help of a friend some months ago.
Not it's a lot that I keep see the notification abount the OS update and I keep skipping it but it's bothering me so... I searched for a guide and I found this (https://oneplus.gadgethacks.com/how...thout-losing-root-no-computer-needed-0192638/) (I hope I can post it also if it's from another website).
It seems so simple, I've downloaded the OTA update, the TWRP and the Magisk. My issue is that whene I reboot to the recovery I'm not booting into TWRP but I suppose into the OnePlus recovery instead.
I searched angain and found this other guide (https://forum.xda-developers.com/oneplus-6t/how-to/official-oxygenos-9-0-4-ota-oneplus-6t-t3860953) that is more complete but I can't understand if it's the proper guide I need to follow to update my device keeping it rooted and most of all without loosing any data.
Thanks,
Riki
The first guide you linked to is wrong. Do not follow that. That is why you don't have TWRP anymore. The second guide you linked to on XDA is correct. Follow the TWRP guide. Once you have TWRP reinstalled.
You must download the zip from the second link you posted here at XDA.
Flash the Zip in TWRP. This flash the update to the opposite slot. It also wipes out TWRP and replaces it with the stock recovery.
Now you must reinstall TWRP. Flash the TWRP installer. This will flash TWRP to both slots.
Now reboot to recovery. This will reboot to the new slot where you update was just flashed.
This is when you install Magisk to the updated slot. You MUST do this.
Now reboot to system after you installed Magisk.
Now you have updated without losing any data.
The guide in the second link says to use the Magisk uninstaller. I've personally never done this. This is probably for people who use all sorts of weird add-ons and such. I don't know. Never uninstalled Magisk, never had a problem. That's all I can say. You can try it, or you can follow the official instructions.

Sounds like you're not running the command from the folder where fastboot.exe is located.
Makes me wonder why you did it this way in the first place. And why people suggested it. Easiest way to install updates on a rooted 6T is to install the update through the normal updater without rebooting, going to Magisk Manager and selecting install to inactive slot and rebooting only after that. That's really all there is to it.

Fastboot was working until I reinstalled adb and OnePlus drivers.

I didn’t know any other way. That’s why I asked how to do it. Anyway I’m running the command from the right folder. Maybe something broke on my laptop.
Yesterday evening I tried from a new laptop windows 10, installed adb and OnePlus driver for the first time and I was able to run the commands without the error not finding the command but:
Fastboot boot twrp.image returned me an error
If I run fastboot flash boot twrp.image it does not give me error but the phone does not response. It only boot to the boot loader.

Try uninstalling adb. Delete the whole folder and install it again. Try updating your netframework on your PC and the latest C++

I'm creating a new tread about the issue and the state where I am because now I can't update or keep data, I just need to recover the phone to a normal state.

Flashing the fastboot rom would probably have gotten you back in and maybe with your data in tact. Now fair warning I'm a Linux user anyways, but really fastboot and adb are so much easier in Linux. For people that have issues, it sometimes is easier just to make a bootable USB / CD of Linux Mint or Ubuntu and then from Synaptic or the Package manager install adb and fastboot. No drivers or anything else to install, everything will just work.
Last time I got stuck in fastboot I just used the fastboot ROM to get back to bootable.

Those fastboot roms have sure saved me from raging before
I would also recommend using migrate, it's in the play store and it backs up all your data and then puts it in a flashable zip

Do a factory reset from TWRP and flash the full ROM.
One best method...and the method that works 100% tested for upgrading a rooted OOS to new OOS version without any loss of data, without any issues.
I'll mention the guide that I have used to upgrade from 9.0.12 rooted to 9.0.13 rooted. Without any loss of data
Download latest OOS full ROM
Boot to TWRP
Flash OOS 9.0.13
Flash TWRP installer zip
Reboot system
Phone will boot.
Now go back to recovery mode
Flash Magisk if u want root again
Done
No confusion. No data loss. Not being stuck. Sweet and Simple.

So I don't have to wipe my system data or anything. I heard some people had the problem of getting stuck or that there was a red warning screen that popped up when booting, and I'm not talking about the bootloader message. I'm currently on 9.0.11. Also should I download the latest version of TWRP or should I use the one I'm using currently. Don't wanna mess anything up. Another guide I read said I should flash the oos rom, then TWRP, than magisk
