Suppose to be rolling out end of April
The latest april firmware introduced a separate Night Mode, it's not clear if this is what Samsung believes should be its Night Sight Mode or if something else is coming. If this is it, it leaves much to be desired.

Seems pointless doing an update for it if it's the same.

They just let you choose the option by your self, nothing else.
I got an update (Poland).
- you're able to shot with night mode in any conditions
- pictures are much brighter most of a time, but quality is rather bad (comparable to auto night mode before) most of the time
- it's not blurry. It's more like "blocky" instead.
- it takes few seconds to take a shot (like Huawei and Pixel)
- IMO - it's definitely still not Pixels or Huaweis territory.

Samsung night mode:
Pixel night sight:
I installed the April firmware yesterday and tried the night mode
It is totally different from the old night mode as it now works the same way as Google pixels and brithen the photo by large amount
The downside is that it have so much noise
Right now am using gcam 6.1 port with nightsight and it is so much better and working as it should but slower than the Samsung application during the stacking and processing of the photo.
I come from P20 Pro so in comparison Samsung version of night shot is sh*it, way too noisy and not even close to as bright or colour accurate.
I tried the Night mode on my S10+ last night in the middle of the night in my dark living room and I am really impressed with the results - it was very dark in the room at the time and image came out pretty darn good -
forget my messy living room.....
after uploading it here - I noticed that the image was rotated but when I took it was in portrait mode - I don't know why it changed it's position when I uploaded it here ? Or does happen from time to time ?
100% dark room and you got that photo? Impossible .
Sent from my SM-G975F using Tapatalk
Maybe my update just doesn't work, but I don't get night mode. Using it just yields a completely dark undistinguishable picture. Normal photo mode with flash gives a clear fairly decent pic. Don't really need it, so I gave use trying to make it work

The last photo I crudely washed out the little girls hand out of the frame.
how in did you get so close to that cute lil creature?
I just put the phone within 12 inches of his face. He was very docile. I even had him sitting on my shoulder. Not sure if he was scared or what his problem was, but he let me hold & pet him without too much moving around.
What attracted me was we were in the back yard, and heard this noise that sounded like a dog, it was this little guy. I looked all over this small tree, didn't find a nest of any kind, no other squirrels any where. Street next to the tree...didn't see any road kill. Not sure if he fell out of a tree, was abandoned or what his problem was. Plan on checking tomorrow to see if he is still there...take some shots with my dSLR.
Cute little Pup.
If the sounds were like a high-pitched 'yelp' that is normally an indication or associated with a call to either a mother calling her Pup/Kitten or the same calling the Mother.
Good shots btw..... Clear and evenly lit. The latter one I would have maybe used flash but that would have more than likely scared the little guy away.
I had a look at all three EXIF Data. Nice to see there were variations.
The last one gave results of:-

I think most people who were complaining about photo quality were, like me, doing so before the recent OTA firmware updates. When on KKA the focus didn't seem to work at all - since updating to LA4 the camera is focusing properly (in most cases) and I've got some great shots.
If you guys don't know about it, check out Pano - I've created some amazing panoramas with it.
These pictures were taken with both firmwares about 8 minutes apart (updated in the park) on the same phone and in roughly the same light. I would have been faster but there was a Dutch family taking pictures and I didn't want to have them in the picture.

Purchasing mine after work around 5pm est. My main focus right now is the camera since I'm pretty much impressed with everything about this phone when I messed around with store demo.
I'll post a whole bunch of shots and comparisons to my S5 around 8-9 est if all goes well. I did notice that reds were a bit over saturated in the samples I took at Verizon. Which was a big issue for me with my original Moto X.

Looks damn good, if people complain about that then they just need to use a DSLR.
Here is a couple from today....
Are these being alerted when uploaded? I assume they aren't 21MP files being uploaded to the forums
I think the problem is people have crazy expectations. Its a good camera but its never going to touch a dedicated camera with large sensors. I'm now switched to Google Camera because Moto one doesn't really seem to be much better.
These are using Moto camera still.
Low light shots I took while messing around with our prototype mini 3D printer this morning. Just quick snaps, no effort at all... Pretty impressive, although reds seem to be a little off -- oversaturated.

However, I do have a post with some serious concerns about the camera (link below) that I need to further test this weekend.

I'd have to say with the physical limits of sensor and aperture size the output is pretty decent and not overly over processed. A raw output would still be nice though.
I had my essential but returned it due to numerous issues. Have software updates done anything major to the camera? Is it anywhere close to the pixel now?
Nope nor will ever be anything like Pixel camera. It's more like 2015 ish camera quality.

Camera is great with gcam. Stock app is still bad and compresses the pics. They just pushed another update today. I just took a pic using both came and gcam file size was 4.47 mbs while stock app was 1.4 mbs. Not sure why they can fix that but it's never going to be good compressing pics like that.

I had an LG v30 and took multiple pics and showed them to my wife on my laptop. Out of 20 or so comparisons there were only 1 or 2 that she felt looked different and they weren't even that bad.
Is it going to beat the Pixel 2 no. Is it a more than capable phone that takes great pics most of the time, yeah!!
After the recent update it's WAY better than when it launched and I'm actually liking it.
Performance, both visually and functionally, has improved greatly from when I first bought the phone earlier this month after the drop to $499. Pictures are still compressed, would be great if they'd get rid of that, but to my/my wife's eyes, *that* is the difference between GCam and Essential Camera. It's like the pictures it takes are good quality, and then it compresses them down to less-than-good quality. GCam doesn't compress, and is visually nicer, but can be a bit of a pain to get the settings right. For quick/social media pictures, the camera is just fine, and hopefully soon they'll either give an option for disabling compression or just disable it altogether, which would (I believe) drastically increase picture quality. Until then, almost any other camera app that doesn't compress will be better.
Also, I've found the quality of the B&W pictures to be considerably better than they were, and that has also increased the quality of the low-light photos (though they still suffer from the same compression artifacting).
Short answer - if you're able to get it from Amazon for the $400 with the 360 Camera, it's well worth the price. It is an amazing phone for the current price.
Did they add EIS for video recording? If so does it also work I'm google camera?
The issue isn't the lens or optics. The camera hardware is legit.
The problem was the dodgy camera app which Essential has been ACTIVELY fixing and releasing speedy updates for.
I have an Essential; hell I'm writing this post from it right now; and I can tell you that with all the updates that Essential had pushed out, the native camera so had gotten MUCH better.
The stock camera is still about 1-2 updates from being perfect so in the meantime I alterenate between the stock camera app and the Google HDR+ app depending on what I'm doing and the effect I'm going for.

For me it's absolutely smudging every detail even after the update, doesn't matter if scene optimiser is on or off.
Taking a picture of my dog she looks like a white splotch where as the Plus model shows her fur in very good detail
