Hi,
The newer units do not have a built-in CD/DVD Player, yet the kids borrow CDs from a library and it is a hassle to have them converted to MP3 on USB flash drive - that's time consuming.
I have searched forums here, but not much info available - rather a recommendation to use a portable CD player and connect it to AUX IN or use FM transmitter. Hey, portable CD player price starts at 60 USD https://www.lifewire.com/best-portable-cd-players-4160484
Google proposed that external USB DVD Player might be accesible via OTG cable (on phones) with a 3rd party app. But then again: the app is like a file manager allowing to open single files (music, images), while I would prefer that the native HU Music app could read the music CD (note: this is standard music CD, not a filesystem with MP3/WAV).
Anybody uses external USB CD Player? (These are available for about 20 USD and could be powered via USB... E.g. https://www.amazon.co.uk/s?k=Slim+Portable+CD+Player&i=electronics&ref=nb_sb_noss )
EDIT: In my case, I have Joyings HU Android 8.1.

Is there any chance that an emulator can be made for Android devices that mimics the control/digital audio interface that many newer head-units use to connect to the iPod?
I currently own an Alpine iDA-X001 and an Alpine iDA-X100M which both connect to an iPod over this USB connection (it allows the digital audio to be processed in the head-unit's D/A converter which allows for higher quality sound), and it would be excellent if I could finally ditch my iPod for my Nexus One.
I know that I could just connect my Nexus One using an Aux-in cable or by mounting the SD card on the radio, but it's just not as good of an interface. The browsing process is tedious, playlists don't work, and cool eye-candy like album art is missing.
I know I'm not alone in wanting an application/emulator that would make this possible, and I'd certainly be willing to pay for it if it was made.
-Any ideas?
Does your Alpine decode the mp3 or just do the job of a dac?
If its the latter I'm pretty sure your Stuck at stage one. Never heard of our devices being able to output pcm.
If the Alpine mounts the ipods hdd and reads the tracks from there your still stuck because the files and folders need to be in a way that an iPod can understand, a way that is incomprehensible to man and machine and in a different format aswell, m4a if memory serves me right. If you could do this you would lose the ability to play these tracks on your device.
Then there's the hardware differences. I should imagine it would be next to impossible to tell your device to listen to iPod specific instructions from USB.
I suppose the moral of the story is no o buy stuff for iPod, it will only work for iPod. Buy something generic and is will work with your iPod and anything else you throw at it.
Sorry to p!as on your bunfire, blame apple not me.
I have a pioneer deck and have been pondering the same issue. My deck, i'm assuming, with the ipod appears to be simply reading the files from the internal storage like a memory card - but since i can change track from my head unit it informs my ipod what file it is playing. I can change the song from either the ipod or the head unit.
It would be nice to even be able to mount the micro sd card to the head unit without it playing all my ringtones, app noise, ect...
The way i am currently doing it is having a "music" folder on my sd card that the head unit can read. But when the head unit connects to the phone it just starts playing the first track it finds alphabetically, no setting to change this, so i have to back out of that folder and into my music folder to play it properly. Can i hide folders somehow WITHOUT affecting the apps? I know on a normal thumb drive that if i hide a folder that had a game or some other music i didn't want my deck to play then it wouldn't read it. Just by changing the properties, in windows, to hidden for a folder.
Hide the folders in windows.
Your phone uses a different method to hide files and folders and should be unaffected.
Maybe a playlist can help if your deck supports it.
With the lack of expandable memory (or 32+ gb of storage. Ideally I'd like, and would pay a premium for, 64gb or more) I'm wondering if I will start plugging an OTG cable full of music into my phone whenever I drive. I already use my phone as my main music player, and because I won't be plugging it into a dock like my GN and its pogopin car dock, I'll have the usb port free & able to accept this OTG-->add'tl storage workaround.
Do any of y'all already do this? I guess my questions are:
How long does it take from a.) plugging the cable in to b.) all of the music files being recognized and able to be played through Google Music or some other player.
[*]Less important and kind of specific... If I have music that is unrated on Google Music, then plug in via OTG some music on an ext. storage, rate a song that's being played from the add'tl storage but also exists (identical copy) on Google Music.... then will my song be rated next time I log into the computer from Google Music?
Thanks ahead of time guys.
Hey guys, I got the nexus player yesterday and I've been seeing mixed results for what I'm trying to accomplish. I'm simply trying to view movies off of a USB flash drive using an OTG cable on a non-rooted Nexus Player. Is this possible? I've sideloaded ES File Explorer and I can see the USB Flash Drive listed under the 'Local' panel of ESFE. When I click on the Flash Drive nothing happens. There is also a eject icon directly beside the text of the USB Flash Drive. I've tried 3 different flash drives 8gb, 16gb, 32gb, and formatted as exFAT, FAT32, and NTFS.
Am I doing something wrong?
Thanks in advance!
I'm having the exactly the same problem.
I just saw a video that claimed that you cannot click on the USB using the nexus player remote. You will need to use a mouse to select the USB drive in ESFE. I haven't been able to test this as I do not currently have a USB hub. I'm ordering one today and I will report back if it works.
So my powered USB hub arrived today and using the mouse to click on the flash drive worked!
I also discovered that you can add the USB to the favourites menu on ES File Explorer to get around the mouse requirement. If your USB shows up as usb2006 or 2007 or whatever, simply add usb://200x as a favourite folder. This will allow you to bypass the requirement of using your mouse. The only negative is that the USB number seems to change every time it's re-plugged in. I got around this by making favourites for usb://2006, usb://2007, etc..
I have it working right now as a FAT32... But I can't to see what file systems are supported. It would see it with ExFAT, but nothing would work. FAT32 works, but has obvious limitations. Does NTFS work? Has anyone tries Ext4?
Sent from my Samsung GALAXY Note 3
I connected a USB hub to my NP so I was able to use my NTFS formatted external drive and my mouse at the same time. I found my video files on HDD by ESFE but there is no any media player app that plays 1080p MKV movies correctly. I tried ESFE's media player, V Player, MX Player... unsuccessfully.
Playback was always laggy and audio problems occured pretty often.
Does anyone know a good option/app for that?
I can't post links but search for the kodi android app and sideload that apk. It works flawlessly.
Download VLC to play movies when you use a external drive or save them to the NP. That's what I do and it works great.
I'm trying to use my N7 in the car as a media playback device. I've got it connected via USB OTG to a hub, Behringer UCA 202 DAC, and 128GB flash drive. The issue I'm having is that when the device reboots or I go in to a media playback app without it connected (N7 player, VLC, or Poweramp) it can't find the files and needs to rescan-WHICH TAKES FOREVER! Is there a way that I can permanently set/code either in the Android program or the app itself a location so it just thinks the file is there-perhaps eliminating the need for Stickmount?
Hi there. i got my new kia picanto. and am trying to run things smoothly. because there is only one usb port on the car, ill have to connect the phone via usb cable on it. so since i will also need an ssd for my flac music, ill put a usb hub on the usb port of my phone. on the hub ill run a cable connecting tha phone to my car and another cable to run the phone to my ssd.
(i am waiting to receive the hub i ordered, sjould be soon with me.)
i know that not all apps appear on android auto. (and i also need my phone to be rooted to show apps not installed through play store).
Problem is this
i have tested many apps that support android auto. like pulsar, neutron, black player, jetaudio shuttle etc etc. i have installed pro versions.
None of these, supports usb on the go for mobile. it shows only files in the internal storage of phone. The only player i have seen that shows files stored on external storage (ssd) is vlc.
But i am looking for a more elegant player.foobar would be awesome as it supports external storage files, but it is not android auto compatible.
Am i stuck with vlc? any other options?
ps. my phone is new, i need to wait 140 hours before xiaomi lets me root it. and i have to wait for tyhe hub to arrive to test how well hub will work with mobile being connected to car and to ssd at the same time. fortunately it will work. if it does it is a game changer for me. because ssd directly to usb of the car supports only flac files up to 48khz. if ssd is connected to phone, it supports 24bit 192 khz. (xiaomi mi note 10 pro).
thanks for any suggestions. cheers

Buy a Mini USB hub to give you additional USB ports as I did in my center arm rest console.

The car USB won't work with a hub unfortunately. It's been tested. But if phone can recognise it, it will be a good enough solution
