Official site does not have fastboot ROM, those zips are meant to be flashed via stock recovery.

Is there a technical reason why you can rollback to the last month's ROM from the Asus website with the stock recovery? Has the filesystem changed or something?

Dear simply visit any Asus service center they will downgrade it to Oreo, I visited today, and one interesting thing is they don't have any stable update for now . Soon a newer fota update will release.

I posted here about the issues I had. I know that at first the problem is the old firmware can't be installed over newer firmware, when I fix that problem the zip package is no longer signed correctly.
Please could you explain why the method you suggest will work.
Yes it's work i done with 2 max pro m2

In case of system update failure the zip file you are trying to flash will be corrupted. (Happened with me many times as i renamed the oreo stock rom to above the build number of the pie update so my phone would treat the downloaded oreo rom to be new .but during the system update after reaching aroung 25 % it displayed an error and the next thing i remember is the zip file getting corrupted) so always keep a backup!
On 25th of april new pie update was released which fixed screen blinking issue.

I have been unable to install the update. Was with custom recovery and root and tried to install it and failed. Did factory reset, install stock recovery, download again the OTA from phone an try to install it and did not work.
Used the guide to go back to the stock firmware (though I already had it)
Try to install it using stock recovery, threw and error. (books.apk blabla).
Don't know what problems could yo be facing but man, this has been tough.
EDIT:
Just figured it out! The problem was exactly that I was already using the stock ROM and deleted some system APKs.
After trying going back to the really stock one once again (first I did not flash system images) it is installing correctly!
Btw this is my mirror for those who prefer using MEGA servers.

Where can I get the stock 4.4 so I can upgrade? I need stock recovery too.
I have problems to update too. XT1032, Retail US. As a first information, I have KK 4.4.4
I managed to download the update from my mobile (zipfile Blur_Version.210.12.61.falcon_umts.Retail.en.US, I already transferred to my PC thanks to Root Explorer), but when I go to "install now" and reboot, trying to install from zip file, pops a message from my recovery (PhilzTouch) Error Status 7. My phone is rooted by SU v2.46
So, what are the exactly step-by-step guide. I will appreciate that. Greetings from Chile

Followed your steps:
- Flashed my phone (XT1032) with Retail US 4.4.4 Stock (RETAIL_XT1032_4.4.4_KXB21.14-L1.61_cid9_CFC.xml) using CMD, fastboot, typing list of files, etc.
- Updated some Motorola apps. Noticed Super SU is already included and installed by default, no way to uninstall it.
- Downloaded to my computer the OTA file (Blur_Version.210.12.61.falcon_umts.Retail.en.US), then moved OTA file to SD Card
- Turn off mobile
. Reboot in stock recovery, with the robot and the exclamation sign.
- Try to apply update from SD card with the file previously loaded on it (Blur_Version.210.12.61.falcon_umts.Retail.en.US)
- At verifying update package, update stops popping a message. The message in yellow is:
Package expects build fingerprint of motorola/falcon_retuglb/falcon_umts:4.4.4/KXB21.14-L1.61/62:user/release-keys or motorola/falcon_retuglb/falcon_umts:5.0.2/LXB22.99-36/35: user/release-keys; this device has motorola/falcon_retuglb/falcon_umts:4.4.2/KXB

In the SU menu you can find a way to delete the root, but I don't think that is causing the error.
Can you please tell me the version of recovery your phone have? You may have installed a kit kat 4.4.2 recovery or one with a different build number and that's causing the error.
IKXB21.14-L1.61
In the recovery menu, you should see the .61. I got the same problem as you and was using .32.
Did full factory reset, and installed stock again (w/o updating anything at all), when I checked the recovery, it was .61 and it updated perfectly.
In case you are really sure you got the actual last kitkat update firmware, you can try to extract the recovery.img and flash it using moto tool,
(rename it to StockKitkatrecovery.img and replace the one it brings with this one)

I solved my problem by myself, thanks anyway. The issue for me, was updating some apps once in 4.4.4. You should not to do it.
Explanation for dummies, as me, in order to get Lollipop 5.0.2:
1) Flash your phone (XT1032) with Retail US 4.4.4 Stock (RETAIL_XT1032_4.4.4_KXB21.14-L1.61_cid9_CFC.xml), as it follows:
A) Extract the Retail US 444. Stock zip file (475 MB)
B) Download this file too: (1,5 MB) https://www.dropbox.com/s/nlbrn71wfqyup4u/mfastboot-v2.zip?dl=0 , and unzip it inside the same folder as you extracted Retail US Stock zip file. All files together in the same path.
C) Put your phone on fastboot (turn off, and then press Vol-and Power 3 secs, and release both buttons). Connect your phone to USB port.
D) Inside the folder containing all all these files, press **** + right click and choose "open file command", and a CMD window will open.
E) Once in CMD window, execute one by one:
mfastboot flash boot boot.img
mfastboot flash recovery recovery.img
mfastboot flash system system.img_sparsechunk.0
mfastboot flash system system.img_sparsechunk.1
mfastboot flash system system.img_sparsechunk.2
mfastboot flash modem NON-HLOS.bin
mfastboot erase modemst1
mfastboot erase modemst2
mfastboot flash fsg fsg.mbn
mfastboot erase cache
mfastboot erase userdata
mfastboot reboot
F) After reboot, unplug phone from USB port.
G) Done, you have now Stock Retail US 4.4.4 installed on your phone, Turn it on and set all things in order to go to home screen.
2)Once in the main screen , don't update your apps, no matter if they are even from Google or Motorola, don't do it
3) Download to your PC the OTA file (372 MB) Blur_Version.210.12.61.falcon_umts.Retail.en.US
4) Connect again your phone to USB port , and move OTA file to your phone SD Card
5) Once done previous step, go to Stock Recovery Mode. It is:
A)Turn Off your phone
B) Press Power and Vol- for 3 secs, then release
C) Select with vol- recovery option, and confirm it with vol+ button
D) Android Robot with exclamation sign will show up on the screen
E) Press vol+ and vol- for 5 secs, then press power once and release all the 3 buttons at the same time
F) Recovery Stock will appear you now.
6) Apply update from SD card with the file previously loaded on it (Blur_Version.210.12.61.falcon_umts.Retail.en.US). Select OTA file on "apply update from zip file".
7) Process will take up to 10-15 minutes aproximately. Voilá, you will have Lollipop 5.0.2 on your RetailUS mobile.
Hope it will be useful for dummies, like me. Thanks.
Greetings from Chile.

I had same issue and after all these steps my phone updated perfectly.

You cannot downgrade the 41.19 bootloader to the 41.13. If you try to do that you WILL hardbrick your phone. However you can downgrade from Lollipop to Kitkat 4.4.4 (I know because I am on the 41.19 bootloader and was on cm 12.1 but restored to 4.4.4 successfully).
You have to flash the firmware for your phone except for the gpt.bin and motoboot.img. Flash all the other files in the firmware for your phone without those two and you should be fine.
xt1028 Moto G
I'll never flash stuffs with Motorola recovery! Today I did a factory reset with the stock recovery and damn! it deleted all my files in the internal SD! IT would have never happened if I would have factory reset with TWRP!
I'll wait for lost101's zip!
Dummy friendly guide how to upgrade, flash and install the latest Marshmallow Firmware and the latest ROM’s such as the ViperOne ROM 4.x.x, this guide is intended for those who are already slightly familiar with the flashing process and have previously managed to flash a ROM on their HTC One M9 device…
CHECKLIST BEFORE STARTING:
1) Phone is S-OFF
2) Unlocked Bootloader
3) Rooted
4) Latest TWRP recovery
5) SUPER CID changed to 11111111
6) External SD Card
7) NANDROID Backup and any or every other form of backup
8) Device drivers, Android SDK Platform Tools including ADB & FASTBOOT.
9) USB Debugging enabled.
10) BACK UP OF ALL YOUR DATA !!!
Before we begin make sure you back up all your data on both the internal and external SD card.
For the purpose of this tutorial we will be installing the latest ViperOneM9 ROM…
a) Downloaded and place the latest ViperOne ROM - ViperOneM9_4.x.x.zip on your External SD card,
Main Thread by j to the 4n is found here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/one-m9/development/rom-viperonem9-1-0-0-tweaks-hub-t3072773
Latest ViperOne ROM for download is here:
http://venomroms.com/htc-one-m9/
b) If you are currently on ViperOneM9 3.5.0 or older and wish to upgrade to the latest 4.x.x than the latest Marshmallow firmware is required (3.35.401.12 or 3.35.617.12 firmware)… This can be found here and within Sneakyghost original thread.
https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1ZaiJ3F_f76sVa4daU5H62OYi5Bj23LEBBv4xDTQ8y-M/pubhtml
http://forum.xda-developers.com/one-m9/development/firmware-t3068243
Now download the latest version of either:
NO WIPE ZIP
or
FULL STOCK WIPE ZIP
For this tutorial we will use the FULL STOCK WIPE ZIP (to archive a clean install – this will wipe everything on your phone excluding the External SD card)
c) Place the downloaded M9_3.35.401.12_FullStock_wipe.zip into your Android SDK Platform Tools Folder (for example C:\Android\ if this is where all your tools are found)
d) Download the latest version of TWRP recovery from
http://www.teamw.in/devices/htconem9.html
Place the downloaded twrp-2.8.7.0-hima.img in your Android SDK Platform Tools Folder
e) Once you are 101% ready to begin the process start by connecting your device and launching the command window (hold shift, right click in window with all the required ADB/FASTBOOT aps and select "open command window here) once the black terminal window appears start by typing in
adb devices
if your phone appears in the list we can continue by typing:
adb reboot download
wait a few seconds for the screen to appear and type:
fastboot oem rebootRUU
your phone should now be in the RUU mode with a silver HTC logo, now type
(if you renamed the original file type its current name, by default it is as follows)
fastboot flash zip M9_3.35.401.12_FullStock_wipe.zip
f) you will most likely receive something like this towards the end after running the above command...
FAIL90 hboot pre-update! please flush image again immediate
FAILED (remote: FAIL90 hboot pre-update! please flush image again immediate)
For "hboot-preupdate" response, restart the same procedure for device...
just type the above command again and phone will flash the update again and hopefully it will take at least a minute or more to complete, hopefully there will be no more errors, just in case repeat the above command... Just in case you do see errors try looking them on Sneakyghost's thread found here
g) Once this is done and everything passed than we have successfully upgraded our firmware to Marshmallow... Since we selected the FULL STOCK WIPE option we need to flash TWRP once again (as it was wiped) and don't bother resetting or hoping for the phone to boot normally as it won’t...
(if you renamed the original file type its current name, by default it is as follows)
Type:
fastboot flash recovery twrp-2.8.7.0-hima.img
and once it’s done
adb reboot-bootloader
*if for any reason you need to reset your phone and gain access to the bootloader menu, download mode, recovery etc. you can always do this manually by holding vol up, vol down and power buttons at the same time for a few seconds to reset the device, to get into the bootloader, recovery, download mode etc. After the phone resets continue holding the vol down and power button until you reach the bootloader menu.
*if you type adb devices and you see multiple devices or emulators that prevent the commands from working I suggest running the following:
adb kill-server
adb devices
Now only your connected device should appear…
h) It is now time to enter our recently flashed recovery to finally install our latest ROM.
Enter the recovery manually or by typing
adb reboot recovery
From there you may select the wipe option (swipe to factory Reset) and proceed to the Install section, browse for your ROM file and select it.
i) Within Aroma installer select all your preferred options and begin to install, once the flashing completes your device should reboot and now you keep your fingers crossed and wait (will take several minutes so just be patient…. And DONE!!! You now have the latest Marshmallow firmware and ViperOneM9 ROM installed.
#Please note that I’m no expert when it comes to these matters, this guide is here to help anyone who is unsure what to do, I tried to write it up the best way possible (sorry that there are no fancy pictures) if there any errors or issues with my methods please feel free to correct them but so far they worked for me and hopefully will also work for you. (This guide will also help you flash other ROM's) If you need more help please feel free to ask, there is always someone here on xda who knows the answers

Very nice writeup. Just got an M9 for the wife. I've been around the block so I get everything, but I've been away from HTC since the One X...well, there's the N9 but it's a nexus. What are the RUU mode and Download mode. If I remember correctly there was only the bootloader to go to on the One X. If it's complicated is there somewhere I can read about the modes?
Can you write instructions for s-on and unlocked boatloader? Thanks.

Also try the following as error 22 was not covered in the error handling section...
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=59783531&postcount=3
Download 7zip, open the zip inside of the program, right click on the Android text file and open within. Change the mid to yours hit save. It will ask if you want to update the zip, hit yes. Then try and flash.
SneakyGhosts post explains this:
Error 22 is new to me too but the string is kind of self explanatory: every archive has a header where the archive-program finds info about what type of archive and what compression. If the error says anything about this header, the logical conclusion is either a corrupted, broken archive or an unsupported archive type.
I suspect the latter simply due to the fact that the zip was unpacked and repacked, which then easily creates an incompatible zip.

I'm still kind of "fuzzy" on this whole firmware thing.... IF I don't want to wait (on ATT) and IF I go S-OFF, which firmware can I/should I use for Marshmallow?

A few questions to help me clear my confusion ?
4.After flashing it will load you into the Rom = .184 stock rom from raw .184 ?
6.After that, our Full Rom, rename to update and sideload = .184 stock rom
Any particular reason why we would need to sideload stock .184 rom -- when we are in .184 stock before putting FOTA 6.0 to internal ?
is it patched the 2nd .184 ?
@Russiamen did you make modifications in the 'full rom' zip file, or is it the same zip file that we can download from Asus site?
And I have the same doubts that @timbernot 's ones.
There is an newer MM build (V4.21.40.78_20160624_7972). Could I flash it instead the provided FOTA?
do you have a download link for 78?
after this steps the rom will rooted or have to root it?
Thank you for your guide
but raw rom link has not any file for z00a
i found this

For Z008-https://yadi.sk/d/Y51bbCIZsVaMf this link not working plz fix this link there showing "nothing found"
The Raw link for Z00A says "nothing found," and the FOTA for the Z00A says it needs a decryption key.
So this guide is to update your bootloader to the marshmallow firmware. So you can install Marshmallow based ROMS?
The reason I'm asking is because i've Unlocked my bootloader and installed the latest version of TWRP 3.02.0 Z00A and I was on android 5.0 on stock ZenUI. I'm getting Error 7 everytime I try to install a ROM. I'm certain i'm installing the correct ROM for the device. I've also wiped the device, cleared the cache, ect. And still nothing. Any suggestions? Thanks for the help.
hello,my zenfone ze551ml might be going to upgrade to mm 6.0, please tell me is it marshmallow stock rom camera better than 5.0? is it 6.0 have setting sd card become internal storage? is it 6.0 have mass big storage not just mtp when connected to pc ?
Sent from my S660 using XDA Premium 4 mobile app
From the first time i was not able to upgrade my phone to another new version of Android.
The phone was bought on chinese store with Android version : WW V10.40.47.107 (Android MM)
When i checked availability of new versions, phone showed me no result available.
Then following instructions i unlocked bootloader and then install TWRP as recovery system.
I tried to install updates of ROM downloaded from Asus website using this methods with this results :
installing by TWRP with ROM transfered to internal memory of phone KO
installing by "ADB sideload" command KO
I partially resolved after many attempts updating only to Version V11.41.87.2 (Android MM)
I solved in this way :
i used TWRP installing from file transfered directly in microSD
i extracted from zipped file "updater-script" file that is possible to find in the following folder path :
META-INF > com > google > android
and then deleted this rows :
(!less_than_int(1494697617, getprop("ro.build.date.utc"))) || abort("Can't install this package (2017年 05月 14日 星期日 01:46:57 CST) over newer build (" + getprop("ro.build.date") + ").");
.....
getprop("ro.build.asus.sku") == "WW" || abort("Please use the right SKU for updating...");
.....
and then save file extracted and compress into zip file.
During TWRP install process i got some error updates, it seems connected to System folder/partition update
but at the end i was able to update Android to my phone
I tried to do the same method with an other update Version V20.32.67.25 i got a corrupted System folder/partition
It seems essential to update this phone to use original recovery system. Can anyone give it to me?
Or is there someone who has been able to install updates using TWRP without any error ?
Also after installation I wiped the Boot, System, Data, Cache partitions and then I restored from Nandroid backup done by TWRP.
But the phone did not start at the reboot.
I then had to reinstall the update with the method described above to get the working phone back
Why did Nandroid backup with TWRP not correctly restore the phone?
Many thanks to anyone can help me

There is a link to a rom in this post. In that zip you will find recovery.img. Flash it with adb, like you flashed twrp.
Then you can flash the last M official rom, and subsequently the first and last N roms.
That's the way I did it. I had to end up wiping data, to make it work correctly.
I'm also looking for a Nougat recovery.img.
I wouldn't like to go thru all the process again if there is another update.
Good luck.

Dear boss , please give me Asus Zenfone 3 Zoom Nougat flashable Rom or any easy solutions........

After 11 hours trying out finally solved!!!
I originally just wanted to do a factory reset, and swiped then not only data/cache, but unfortunally - because of lack of expirience - also system partition. After that all the problems occured like described above and partitionally in https://forum.xda-developers.com/zenfone-3/help/unbricking-zenfone-3-ze552kl-dm-verity-t3563970 (there was no OS anymore, twrp warned me this every time I wanted to power off, but I couldn't install the firmware again through fastboot neither through twrp -> install zip; have got error 7 or 6).
Afer a lot of fears and hours of trying aroud possibilities above as well as ideas from articles here:

I have finally founded a solution!!! This is in FIRSTLY restoring original recovery and just then flashing the stock ROM. Here the steps to do for it:
a.) Download original stock rom (raw-version!) from https://cloud.mail.ru/public/HuMJ/wEybSNsQA (raw is to flash through AFT - asus flash tool) or from any other source you can find online; official name seems to be "WW-ZE553KL-20.31.49.2-MR2-user-20170620235128-release_raw.zip"
b.) Exctract and move recovery.img to your adb-folder on PC
c.) Boot your phone into fastboot/boot mode, connect to PC through USB-Cable
d.) Run cmd in adb folder, then type in the command "fastboot flash recovery recovery.img"
e.) Reboot and choose recovery mode - now you have no twrp anymore, but the original recovery menue
f.) Install update, which means, original stock from your sd-card.
Be happy!
It would be nice if you could give me feedback, whether my solution was helpful for you, because it took time to write it and hope it will usefull

Boss,
This solutions can work with ASUS ZENFONE 3 ZOOM.........???
I have ZenFone 3 zoom. Already I successfully convert CN to WW Rom by following this introduction ... https://forum.xda-developers.com/zenfone-3-zoom/how-to/transfer-cn-rom-to-ww-rom-ze553kl-t3612990

Yes, I did it with my Zenfone 3 Zoom (ze553kl). So, you have firstly to flash the original recovery - to find, as described, in the raw stock rom zip archive. Or, you can find all original recovery's also here: (not tested by myself) https://mega.nz/#F!p90wgAaY!l1JbJilmAUEKTKWu43pT9w
Copy recovery.img to adb-folder, then flash it in fastboot mode in the cmd with "fastboot flash recovery recovery.img". Also copy the original stock rom with Android N to your sd-card and put it into your phone.
Then reboot your phone into recovery - now you have no twrp anymore, but original recovery. Install now the zip with Android-N-stock-firmware from sd-card. Enjoy!

Thank you very much ...... Your solution absolutely excellent and work very well . I am very happy for your support . But unfortunately I found new problem on my phone ...... After update nougat a white line found on the display......
How can I solved it .......
Waiting for solution.......
Thanks again for your support ........
Glad to hear, that it worked for you as well. About white line I have no idea, but on other pages I have already seen somewhere, that other users also reported about this problem. Try to look at google "ze553kl update white line". You can also search a solution for ze552kl instead of ze553kl, because, as far as I know, the ze552kl (ZenFone 3, without "Zoom") is almost the same device, just with a little worse cam. Therefore, it seems to be longer on the market and to have more users, so there are also more solutions for problems which can occure to this device in the internet. Wish you a good luck!

Very helpful, thanks!
I must've messed something up when I flashed TWRP.
TWRP ran fine, but when I tried to start it up, it stayed stuck at the Android logo.
Then errors popped up when I tried to install the stock rom through TWRP.
I never would've thought or had the guts to restore stock recovery first.
This should get its own thread.
Edit: I think my mistake was unchecking "Mount system partition read-only."

After many days i finally found enough time to try to use your tips.
I tried to convert system.New.DAT to system.img but without success using this program Autotool 3.0
http://www.droidviews.com/convert-and-extract-system-img-and-system-new-dat-files-on-windows/
After this attempt i used a ROM provided by chinese store to flash its content :
system.img
boot.img
recovery.img
Original recovery.img is essential to install other updates.
After that i tried to install other updates recognized directly starting by phone but always without success.
So i have had to install updates using original recovery tool.
Now i got Android 7.1.1 last version installed on my phone but it's impossible to use
TWRP recovery tool.
Obviously it's possible to install TWRP instead of original recovery tool and also possible to make a nandroid backup
but it's impossible to use it to install original ROMs released from Asus and it's not possible
to use to restore nandroid backups.
Is it eventually possible to use a custom ROM ? If it's, which one and possibly compatible with TWRP ?
i solved issue of update, but TWRP ?

After many days I finally found enough time to try to update my Asus Zenfone 3 Zoom to Android Nougat.
To solve the issue, I used an original Rom from the Chinese store because it contains useful files for purpose without any conversion:
boot.img
system.img
recovery.img
I flashed all 3 IMG files.
Recovery.img that it's necessary to get original recovery without which any update can be done.
You must use a microSD and the original recovery tool to be able to upgrade your system.
The problem is that it does not seem possible to use TWRP. It is possible to install it in place of the original recovery and you can do also a nandroid backup but in practice you can not use it to install any updates and restore any nandroid backups.
Is there a custom rom that you can use instead of the original one?

Pretty sure you'll need stock recovery to update the "normal" way.

I'm not an expert - I always use HuRUpdater to update. It just requires you to download the (exact) right files, renaming them correctly and (like rooting with Magisk) just simply flashing a single .zip in recovery. In case you try it out, remember rule#1: Always make sure you have a (nandroid)backup.
Here are the relevant lines from my "Huawei-related-findings" text file:
#update
"Depends on how you rooted.
For a successful OTA install your device probably must meet the following criteria
• HUAWEI stock recovery installed
• unaltered /system, /product and /vendor partitions
So if you rooted with a "systemless" method (e.g. Magisk, recent SuperSU) and haven't done other installs/modifications that typically change /system you could try it. And you have to flash stock recovery (i.e. get rid of TWRP temporarily for the OTA install)."

#update
“It's recommended to use a proper custom recovery (with running oeminfo_nvm_server service) like for example*my version of TWRP.
How to use:
Warning: Make sure you know what you are doing and do not flash firmware from other devices.
1. Download firmware files (for official firmware use Huawei Firmware Finder).
2. Put files you want to flash in a seperate folder on sdcard.
Supported zip files to flash are (name must match):
◦ update.zip (use FullOTA file)
◦ update_all_hw.zip
◦ update_data_public.zip
3. Optional: Put recovery.img in same folder if you want to keep custom recovery.
4. Put HuRUpdater zip in same folder.
5. Select*only HuRUpdater*to flash in custom recovery.
6. Follow instructions on screen. Flashing can take multiple minutes.
Problems:
• If firmware includes factory reset
◦ Factory reset is not supported by custom recovery. Therefore HuRUpdater will flash stock recovery before launching factory reset. After flashing firmware and doing factory reset, you need to flash recovery manually.”

Yes, I'm im the same boat - I guess you also get the "can't have connection" error using the FF app. During the last weeks they had troubles with their service regarding hackers and moving to a new server (according to their telegram group), which have been fixed ("all services working normally now"), and many can use it again - for whatever reason some still can't connect. I tried reinstalling the app, using proxies from different countries - still doesn't let me connect.
But their web interface is working: https://pro-teammt.ru/firmware-database/ though you can't check iirc, if the firmware has been approved for your IMEI.

It's online now! I suggest you to download the "2018.08.30" .158 "2379" release, if you have a FIG-LX1, L31 board phone.

You apparently can download this release (2379) if you own this device/board- though the last time I updated mine (.148) I used the 2079 (154226) one despite owning the exact same device. I'm slightly confused about this
I didn't try the above mentioned update myself.

Try installing an older version of the Firmware Finder app - I switched from (current) v9.0 to v8.9 and it works now
