Has anyone looked into a way to make the nook think your sideloaded content was downloaded from B&N.. IS there some data base file that keeps record that we could edit? I'm sick of my sideloaded books lacking the functionality of the downloaded ones.. anyone have ideas on where to start?
Edit:
I found this on the nook tablet forum... BN Book Directory, Calibre, Cut&Paste, Library Covers

I moved a folder into /system/media/books and after stopping and restarting the Library app, the books within the folder did show up in the Library.
However after long-pressing the book, i noted Delete was not an option from the library.
Not a huge deal... if i want to delete them I can simply mount /system as rw, open ES File Explorer, and delete them.
Can anyone confirm that the /system/ location is actually on the B&N 12gb partition?
edit: this doesn't really resolve my secondary objective, of getting Magazines to show up in the Magazine tab of the Library (there is no /system/media/magazines!)

Has any tried placing books in the directory /data/media/b&n downloads/books/
Update:
ok so placing books in /system/media/books does allow it to show up in the library..
and you can read it
Still won't show meta information..
OK so I've found that the database looks to be here
/data/data/com.android.providers.media/databases/internal.db
/data/data/com.android.providers.downloads/databases/downloads.db <----- Looks more promising
I've looked at the file in notepad and can see the ISBN numbers listed in the file but i can't read it correctly ... what program should i use to edit this?
the books you download are names with the ISBN number... in the /data/media/B&N Downloads/Books/
Edit:
/data/data/com.android.providers.downloads/databases/downloads.db is defiantly the right file i just need help editing... it I've never done sqlite3 before
OK so I've found that the database looks to be here
/data/data/com.android.providers.media/databases/internal.db <----- Looks more promising
/data/data/com.android.providers.downloads/databases/downloads.db <----- deadend
I've figured out the sqlite thing....
Downloads didn't work....
Internal.db seems to have all the information.... It has a field for summary, author, what not.... So Meta info isn't used at all by the nook... its added per book base to the internal.db file.... bummer. I guess i'll add the info and see if it is recognized.
Looks like there might be alot of info needed from BN.com to make it work... ugh

I’m sure B&N keeps info on their server too, and should sync it across all your devices (like the book page you are on). No idea how their sync works and what exactly being sync-ed.

What is it you missing so badly?
I guess i'm to picky... I have 60 books that were suggested by people that i haven't read yet. I like to be able to read a summary before i start reading..
Is it just me or do the search functions not work like the they should? X-ray search doesn't seem to work like the advertisements.
Being able to mark a book as read... I like seeing my progress
Archiving books would also be nice.
Ok, I see what you mean.
I don’t know where book summary is stored. Could be in a EPUB ifself?
I would start copying some book from /data/media/B&N Downloads/Books to SD card and check if you get a summary.
X-ray search – know nothing about it, sorry.
About Archiving - I guess, we supposed to be able to delete a book from nook and be able to download it later again (since B&N have a record that we bought it).
For side loading, we can create Archive folder.
I know, it’s not exactly archiving, but just trying to be helpful…

I do know that by placing your books in '/system/media/books' folder you can use the B&N partition for your side loaded books you just have to reboot to recognize them. There is also no option to delete books once they are placed there. you would have to delete them with a file manager or over ADB

As far as I can tell, in the internal.db there are 2 different table, 'docs' for sideloaded books and 'products' for B&N books and the 'docs' table misses the short synopsis field used for the book summary.
So probably there is no way to have summary for sideloaded books...
If we put book into /data/media/B&N Downloads/Books/ folder, it’ll go into 'docs' table for sideloaded books still, right?
BTW: How do you fiddle with databases such as internal.db?
Use adb to pull/push and fiddle on PC, or use adb shell to do it on nook?

Both, actually.
I use SQLiteStudio to browse data and definitions, and a copy of sqllite3 found on this forum to modify the DB on the device via adb shell

Well my thoughts were why can't we just manually insert the books in the the "products" with the data fields filled in. i tried guessing at what all those fields were. I'm assuming it wasn't the correct info or didn't match the book some how because it didn't work.

I tried to place the books into /data/media/B&N Downloads/Books/ folder but the nook ignored them. From what i can tell it checks the database file and if its not in there it doesn't see it.
if you place your books in /system/media/books/ folder it will recognize them as sideloaded books. That is the same location as your quick start.epub and the manual.epub
I have placed books there and the nook will load them after a reboot.
I adb pull/push and used a program called sqliteadmin in windows

I was searching and came across your post, have you considered using Calibre to sideload your books? I just changed yesterday to include the metadata (within calibre program) on the first page of the book. that way you can review the information you have set. It will also download metadata for books you do not have info on.
Don't know if this helps good luck with your Nook.
I realize I may be bumping this thread, but I figured that it was worth it. I worked around with a few of the files and I figured out everything now. I can get my side-loaded books to show up in the My Books section. Thanks to OP to giving me the hint about the database files. :good:
My method requires you to download a sample of the book you want to side load from the Nook Store ( remember, a sample; not the book. Samples are free.) The database files contain the metadata info. Copy the filename of the sample you have downloaded( this will be in \sdcard\Nook\Content). Copy over the ePub you want to side load and rename the file with the name of the sample downloaded. Going into the Nook app, you can now see that the sample in the Library has been replaced with the full version of the book.
Head over to Android Market and buy the SQLite Editor. Once that's done, open up the app and click on B&N Nook( or something to that effect, since I don't remember it exactly). Head into products, and scroll sideways until you come across "isSample". ( Please look into the column or row for your book.) For your sample book, the value will be set to 1. For the purchased books, it'll be zero. Just long click on that cell and edit the value and set it to 0. Click back, exit out of the app and launch the Nook app.
You can now see that the "Sample" logo from the sample book is gone. Voila! Sample books have all the privileges of the full book purchased from the B&N Store. The B&N Store has an abysmal selection of books, so I prefer buying my books from elsewhere and then using them on B&N app. That's the best app I've found for Android so far.
I haven't got the syncing to work yet. I just got onto my tablet, and I don't feel like going through the whole process again. I'll try it out tomorrow and let you know. Side note: I also got "Internal errors" upon launching the app. I believe this is because of me updating the database files and B&N not having a copy of the update. But the app obeys the local copy present, so I' m not too worried about that at the moment.
Can the OP look into this on the Nook tablet? I can confirm this works on the normal Android tablets, but I'm not so sure of the Nook tablet. Maybe it can be run from the CM ROMs?
gadgetdroid's workaround does, indeed give you sharing capabilities.
But this happened when I tried to share to facebook:

clicking 'more' in order to have metadata and summary come up yields 'service unavailable'.
Also, the sample books on my Nook get saved to /sdcard/B&N Downloads/Books/ (symlinked /data/media to /sdcard, so pretend it's /data/media for the rest of you who didn't make that change)
Still I count this as progress. I'm not sure if simply adding a line to the products db on scan is the answer because the products db has so many more columns than the docs db but I'ma try it and see what happens.
spoofing tryouts...
So I tried spoofing the products db to see what what would happen by copying an entry from the docs db (where I had a book already) to the products db, like so (IOW, without having downloaded a sample book from B&N):
INSERT INTO products (_data, ean, _size, product_type, mime_type, _display_name, title, authors, mainAuthorFirstName, mainAuthorLastName, publisher, thumb_image, cover_image, product_code, format_code, purchase status, date_published, date_added, date_modified, locker_delivery_id, locker_status, luid) SELECT _data, _data, _size, product_type, mime_type, _display_name, title, authors, mainAuthorFirstName, mainAuthorLastName, "Barnes & Noble", thumb_image, cover_image, "ER", "EP", "1", "0", date_added, date_modified, "39248209", "ACTIVE", "L39248209" FROM docs where docs.title="The Old Man and the Sea" LIMIT 1;
Click to collapse
I then deleted the relevant entry in the sideloaded db (e.g. docs), went into the Library and clicked the update key. this didn't seem to be effective. I then changed the ean entry to a real isbn number instead of just using the filename twice...still nothing. I then rebooted the device. I tihnk this actually caused the library to do a rescan. I now found that I had two copies of 'The Old Man and the Sea' listed (which of course were actually in the same physical location). The first one listed managed to begin to act like a bought book! E.g. when I went to 'more...' to read metadata, it showed the 'Service Unavailable' error. The sharing button was ungreyed! I then tried to share something to Facebook...but got an error message:

Still, I count that as progress. In the above example, the epub file didn't have a publisher field, and of course the _ean field in the docs database is not populated, so I had to manually drop that in. The ean field cannot be null, and cannot just be some random string of characters. I confirmed this by going back and modifying the db - progress stopped right there, and the Share button became greyed out again.
So I'm not sure if a) the other fields in the products db, which I still have not populated, are relevant to making this functionality work or b) this is as far as we can go and b&n holds all the keys.
One other note: The locker_delivery_id and luid numbers, which are identical except for the leading L, I made up; these cannot be null.
EDIT: one last thing - whenever I open either the 'first' or 'second' copies of 'The Old Man and the Sea' off of a cold boot, I simply get a black screen, and have to go back to the Library and click the book again. I'm not sure if that has to do with anything I'm doing or if it's because of the guevor's kernel (which I just installed)
copying the locker_delivery_id and luid from a book that has been dled from B&N as a sample, instead of just making one up, also doesn't seem to work...

I repeat, unless B&N don't have a copy of your purchase, you will face errors of not finding metadata. I just installed Linux on my laptop, so I'll go through a few things and post the results soon. Have you updated the Nook app to the latest version? In the latest one, you don't have to restart the app any more or restart the device or kill it's process to see the new books added through the file manager.
One more thing. Have you manually tried filling up the metadata on the book you copied in Products db? Don't set the syncing to take place. Mark it as 0. I want to get metadata working first.

I have several questions that hopefully some of you could answer for me.
1. I tried to put some .pdf's on my phone via PC cable. I placed them under "Download" folder. But they do not appear there. Other .pdf's which I have downloaded with the phone are there, but the ones I copy there via PC do not appear up.
2. When using google maps, is it not possible to set a destination or target by using the map, and without having to actually know the address? Just like dekstop google maps "From here/To here"
3. Is it not possible to navigate by only using the GPS? It makes no sence really to require an internet connection as I have saved parts of the map in use for offline use. I tried the navigation but it wouldn't find the destination.
4. I would like to set "Tasks", but I could not find a proper way to do it. When I do it via calendar, the reminder is not a proper alarm (just a small ding or so, very easy to miss). Id like an alarm similiar to the watch alarm.
5. I've read several methods to root my phone. Which one is the easiest and "cleanest"? And a way to allow me to un-root my phone right after. Would this be a good guide: http://www.howtogeek.com/115297/how-to-root-your-android-why-you-might-want-to/
And should I unlock the bootloader?
6. Does the phone not have the stock capability to record sound? And to record a phone conversation? I come from a flip phone, and those did. Do I really need an app for that?
Thank you all.
I. Send the .pdf's to your email instead. Very easy. Or save them to your sd card.
2. To set a destination jurt long press where you want to go and a menu will pop up. From the menu you can choose route or navigation. You can then input the from address.
3. You can navigate using just the map - follow the blue line- without a data connection as long as you input and download the from and to adress before you swithch of the data connection.
4. I do not use tasks so much but the Google calendar works for me and the reminder is loud enough. I even get an email with sound as a reminder.
5. I can't help you here. I have a Note II and see no reason to root…just yet.
Hope this helps.
^Since he can't answer 5, I'll try. Firstly do NOT use a toolkit. They may be the easiest way of rooting, but if you run into issues (and trust me, if you take advantage of root you probably will at some point) a toolkit won't help you at all. Take the time to do it manually, so that when it comes to the worst you'll know how to sort your phone out. If you look in the stickied threads there's definitely a full guide somewhere (I think in the N4 General forum).
Thanks for the replies.
1. Thata is not really an options. I have some pdf's several mb's big. Nexus 4 also does not have an SD card. There must be a folder where I should place them (or any other files for that matter). I copied over my music and video files in the appropriate directories and those work fine.
2,3. Without internet, I only get "Loading address..." or "Getting driving directions" loading sign, and just stays that way. My location is found via GPS, and the map grid is saved for offline usage. When I save the map grid, does that not save all the addresses in that grid?
I have also added another question in the OP.

1) Do they appear on your PC ? Can you see them with a file explorer (ES File Explorer, for example) ?
2/3) To set a destination, you have to be connected to the internet, whatever you do. I think it's because Maps need internet to set the itinerary and download the part's map that will be cached on your device.
5) I think too that rooting it manually is the best solution.
6) No, it's not possible without having to install an app. If you wan to, I suggest you to install Hi-Q MP3 Recorder. The Lite version should be enough, unless you want to record 10+ minutes. I don't have a clue about recording a phone conversation.

Yes they appear in my phone "Download" directory when I look at it via Windows Explorer on my PC. Maybe they need to be put in another directory and not "Download"? Like videos go into Video. And pictures into DCIM/Camera
Slightly disappointing in regards to the navigation. I guess I'm SOL if I go outside of coverage area . I mean I'l have the map and GPS location, but I'l have to manually navigate, and keep looking at my phone while driving...

Yes but some PDF viewers require you to put the PDF files in a specific folder. For example, adobe reader will only "see" files in Download/Adobe Reader but you can change settings so that you can search your PDF through a built-in explorer.

If you use a file explorer to try and open a PDF, then if you haven't set a file type association, the OS will ask you which program you want to use to open it, then you can choose Adobe Reader. It doesn't matter if it isn't in a particular folder.

Yep, that's why I asked him if he was using a file explorer or a PDF viewer
PDF Viewer on the phone you mean?
On the phone, when I go to downloads (the only location I know off where I can view PDF's), apparently it uses Quickoffice to open those PDF's (the one I donwloaded). As I mentioned it does not see PDF's I put there manually via the USB cable from my PC -> Nexus 4 via Windows Explorer.
Just to make sure there isn't any confussion, I can see the PDF I put on my phone in Windows Explorer. But when I use my phone, that PDF will not show up in my "Download".
Is there another place I should put it?
So move the PDFs to a different folder and try again. All I know is I can view them using Adobe Reader in any folder
And if it still not working download adobe viewer and try with.
At last, you could download a file explorer app such as ES explorer and open your file with it, it will ask you which app do you want to open the file with

The Nexus 4 quickoffice is just a file viewer (it doesn't even have an app icon), so you'll need to use another application to locate your files to open them in Quickoffice.
I recommend using Astro or ES. I've used both and absolutely love them.
Obligatory Sales pitch: There's also a file manager built into the Quickoffice Pro app (and you can connect cloud accounts too) - It's available for $15 here, and it supports PDF annotation for Adobe 5-9 files.
yep that was the problem. I have installed ES and now I can access my phone files just like on my computer (why wouldnt this be standard?)
I have also installed adobe reader, so I could found the .pdf file too via that app.
Thanks.
Quick side question: I have set-up an email account using the "Email" built in app. However, it changed some privacy settings (stuff like being able to change phone settings, etc) and I clicked accept. Now I would like to review them. Where would those be found? I checked all options in the "Email" app but couldn't find anything.

I think (and mind you this is all my own thoughts through observation/reading news), Google is working towards a life in the "cloud", so storage on the device itself kind of defeats the purpose. there's Drive for file management and gdocs, Quickoffice for when you need Office, Google Play Music, Books, Movies, etc.
You can review app permissions under Settings>Applications>All, then select the application you'd like to see the permissions for.

3: Google maps uses internet to calculate the best route to your destination. While you can view your location offline, any searching does not work - in other words, the actual addresses are not stored in your phone. Only the "picture" of the map is.
4: you can download some app (any.do is awesome), or set the calendar notification sound to something longer. It will still be only a popup, but it will "ring" for longer.
6. yup, you have to find an app for that..
About navigation, as soon as your phone has calculated the route you can turn data off. As someone have said, Google Maps use data for calculating the fastest route, but afterwards only GPS is required to track your position.
I just got my N4 a few days ago and used this guide to root my phone (stupid easy to follow... even has a video if you need it)

Unfortunately, Android doesn't offer a free offline navigation system like Nokia did (OVI maps was great!) but there are some paid alternatives in Android.
I bought Sygic (http://www.sygic.com/en) and it allows you to download all the maps onto your phone and navigate without internet. Maps for Germany are about 700MB. If you are in the US for example, you can just d/l by State.
Hope that helps!

Doesn't Google need internet to recalculate if you zoom in or zoom out?
"IndexService" issue solved..(Quick battery drain & endless or error index process)
"IndexService" issue cause drain your battery very very quickly... Especially, if your sd card loaded with a lot of big pdf files...
If you dont want to index your "files" go to "s search" settings through menu softkey (long press for open s search then enter menu) and uncheck files... and voila.. your pdf's and another user files not index anymore..
Actually, i really want all of my files content index by note3.. This is very very useful for my pdf library.. But for my situation; several pdf's (some of them are big textbook's, thousands of page) cause never ending indexing process and it's ruin battery life terribly..
If someone find a REAL solution beside of mine, please tell us...

There is an easy solution. Create a folder for your pdfs, drop a .nomedia file in the root of that folder, and put all of your pdfs you dont want indexed in there.
I found that the indexservice process is taking more cpu and time when I have more number of pdf files i my memory card.
So, right now either you can put less number of pdf files on your device to avoid the lag or just wait till the indexing completes.
After the indexing completes, the device works as wonderfully as it was working before inserting my memory card.
Hope I helped...Cheer!!!
Or you can just kill it in settings/apps/active...
It shuts up untill you reboot.

I really hope samsung pushes out an update about it. Even after indexing is done whenever I try to do something quickly it seems it will FC because of the indexer. can't really play any games on it as well because of it.

I don't have root either. Just go to settings > general > application manager > running, tap .com.samsung.android.strokesearch:service. (down near the bottom) Hit 'Stop' and then 'yes'.
Now it stays away until you reboot, at which point you need to do this again. Bit tedious, but it's quicker than rooting.

Easy way to root ant fix this issue
You can fix this issue very easily.
1. Root your phone in under 1 minute at towelroot.com
2. download a freezing app (I paid for a really good one, $6 for titanium backup pro)
3. freeze the offending service.
I didn't know how to do any of these things an hour ago. A quick google question for any you need to learn will give you easy answers.
towelroot is insanely easy. be sure your settings allow non play store apps to be installed; go to towelroot.com; click on the red symbol thing to download the apk; run the apk and you are rooted. done.
I have most recent OS and updates as of the date of this post, sprint Note 3 with 4.4.2 and cnc5 baseband/build number

I'm sorry, I don't understand what you mean by 'files' and 's search'. Do you mean that you have to uncheck each .pdf file in some way? What if we have thousands of them?
Or do you mean something else?
Someone else suggested putting all the .pdf files in a separate subdirectory and adding a .nomedia file. This hides ALL the .pdf files from every app that might search for them including the ones you use to read .pdf files.
We called Samsung this morning. Three levels, no help. They did NOT even understand the problem. "Do a factory reset." Did that, major nuisance, especially losing all the bookmarks in the .pdf files. No solution, it just started indexing again. It says it will take 5 hours to index and there are only 4 hours of battery left. If you plug it into the charger the Galaxy Tab shuts down after half an hour.
I was thinking of replacing my BLU phone (which has serious Play Store/storage problems) with a Samsung, but now I'm not so sure.

I've suggested that in several boards. It's what works for me. Frankly it's best to put one in every directory that you don't actively require the mediafiles from. (actively being ringtones and music.)
So any folder with documents, books, comics, navigation maps, magazines, films... You can launch all from the file explorers. (the maps don't need to be seen at all by mediascanners.) nomedia files apply to subdirectories as well, so one in each directory will suffice. You can copy one from the Android folder.
I've got one folder with 30GB worth of PDF files.
I do occasionally get an indexservice wakelock, but that's always because it hangs on a corrupt file, not the pdfs.

Factory resets don't solve these things. Customer support employees are hired for their affinity with service, not their technical and product knowledge. They usually don't know much at all.

We have a Samsung Galaxy Tab Pro SM-T520 running android 4.4.2 just updated today. We also have a 12.2 Note, and I assumed things were similar. Maybe not. He just followed your instructions. Indexing is still running in the background. It won't stop. I'm reluctant to reboot, but will if it's necessary. Is it?
I don't understand how the .nomedia thing works for you and not for us. He uses ES File Explorer and EBookDroid and neither could see the files in the subdirectory containing the .nomedia file.
I would have assumed that if you persist you can find someone in the 'help' department who at least understands the problem. Apparently not.
This is extremely discouraging

I've got a NotePro 12.2 too. Strange how it doesn't work on yours...
Is ES File Explorer not seeing the .nomedia files or is the folder suddenly empty?
Did he reboot after placing the files and changing the settings? Indexingservice will always run for a few minutes after a reboot.
Alright, have him hook the sdcard to a pc (preferably with a cardreader) and let explorer search it for 0kb files. It depends on your system language, in english you can search for 'size:empty'. You can also click the advanced search options and select size.
Any file it finds that isn't a nomedia file or a playlist, delete (or move to the pc.)
Then do the same with the tablet itself. (this will take a while, mtp is agonisingly slow.)
Surely at some point this must begin to make sense.

The 12.2 Note hasn't been updated yet. Has yours? Fear and trepidation...
There were no 0-lenth files when he read the card on the computer. Sizes of the files seemed not-abnormal and he spot checked a few, which were OK. BTW, we're using linux, not windows.
Possible misunderstanding: Previously he created a subdirectory called .nomedia and put all the pdf files in it. The subdirectory itself was invisible to ES file explorer etc.. He's now putting all the pdf and epub files in /sdcard1/pdf and adding a 0-length file called .nomedia to the subdirectory.
The index service is running and the damn thing is warming up. He's plugging it into the charger and going to bed (he keeps odd hours.) More whenever.
Google doesn't seem to be willing to offer much help unless you own a Nexus -- they just tell you to contact your manufacturer. Given that they sell android to the manufacturers, presumably at a profit, this seems at the very least cheesy and certainly not in keeping with the "Do no evil" mantra. How can the manufacturers possibly be expected to cope with the inner workings of how the OS itself operates?

Ah. Folders with a . as the first symbol are hidden folders. They're still scanned by indexingservice, just not shown. (ES has an option in settings > Display to enable them) I usually just copy the .nomedia file from SDcard/Android and past it in the folder where I need it.
Basically it should be Sdcard(or sdcard1)/pdf, with in it the .nomedia file followed by all the pdfs. You can sort the pdf's into folders inside /pdf, because the nomedia file in /pdf excludes the folders in it as well.

The issue doesn't exist on a Nexus because they don't have MicroSD slots. Samsung, HTC, Sony, LG and the others add the MicroSD slot and support themselves, and thus Google says is it their problem to solve. Makes sense, in a twisted sort of way.

BTDT, except he doesn't want to clear data/cache on the off-chance that it will delete his laboriously-recreated bookmarks in the books he's reading. It would be nice if apps would tell you exactly what they're going to delete/clear/empty.
I had a vague hope that the Samsung guy would perhaps know somebody in Samsung engineering, thereby bypassing the useless helpdroids.

Choose your size. It's a keeper.
Clearing Data/Cache on S Finder affects only the data gathered by S Finder. S Finder is nothing more than a search app. So it only clears the indexed search data.
The bookmarks made in the books he is reading are stored in the data of the reader app he is using or the files themselves. S Finder can't touch those.

I have a Note 4 and was having the same issue. The culprit in my case was the SD Card. I first used a Samsung Class 10, 64GB. "Index" was killing my battery. I formatted the card inside the phone, but it was no use. Then I exchanged the card for Sandisk Ultra 64GB, which I believe is in the same Class. Magically, "INedex" issue stopped and then I got very good battery Life! Result is: Samsung Card was not compatible with Samsung phone... Who can understand these things happenning..?!
Verizon GN3, updated, stock ROM, not rooted.
I have a 64gb MicroSD card installed, and put a copy of my photography website on it. I find I am unable to figure out a way to open it in Google Chrome.
I used ES File Explorer's FTP function to begin with, to copy files from my website to the card, and this worked beautifully. When I click on the index.html file on the card, the only options offered are HTML viewer and some text editors. Chrome is not an option (Chrome is the default browser for my phone).
If I long-press the file, and select Properties, I can copy the Path for the file, but when I paste this into Chrome's URL bar, it won't open:
Access to the file was denied
"The file at file:///storage/extSdCard/PhotoWebsite/index.html is not readable. It may have been removed, moved, or file permissions may be preventing access"
I have searched quite a bit, and tried various addresses, including localhost, localhost/mnt, etc., etc., but nothing seems to work.
Ultimately I want to have a Bookmark in Chrome where I can view my website offline when necessary, but this seems to be more complex than would appear necessary.
Any help appreciated.
Bump - came off first page without any replies.
Does anybody here know how to get an html file on your MicroSD Card to open in a browser??
Seriously? Is there no way to accomplish what should be a fairly basic task: for a browser to open up an html file???
If you use My Files to navigate to the file and then select it does it not give you options as to how to open it?

And unfortunately, no. My Files is a more basic app than ES File Explorer, and when I locate the file with it, and select it, 2 options are given:
Complete Action Using ES Note Editor or HTML Viewer.
Chrome or other Browser are not provided as an option.
HTML Viewer is apparently a type of minimalist browser, but fails hopelessly as a way to view webpages. No controls, no resize, etc. And I haven't figured out any way to get HTML Viewer to send anything to Chrome or other Browser.
As I said, this is really quite puzzling. It should be a no-brainer for a browser to open an html file, regardless of its location. Hopefully I'm missing something basic, but I've done quite a bit of searching and experimenting, and can't seem to find the trick, or particular syntax, to get this working.
Hmmmm.... Very weird! like you said, you'd think it'd be a simple task. I may play around now, just because LOL

I had run across one or two like that in my searching, but haven't tried them yet. I like to keep my systems as 'clean' as possible, and so my first choice would be to do it natively. It seems a lot of the problems people develop with their phones, lagginess, various quirks, etc., arise from some odd app or two that doesn't play well with others, or which fix some problem, but create others.
But reading the reviews of the app you linked to, it does seem to fill a pretty major gap that is apparently present in the Android OS, so may be worth a shot.
Thanks.
That was the first thing that came up in my search and I agree with keeping the phone "clean". I'll keep looking

Well, I went ahead and installed 'Open in Browser.' It installed without problem, ran it to select my preferred browser (Chrome), but when I try to open the file, with either Chrome or the stock Browser selected, I still encounter that same dang error message.
I even rebooted the phone, just to make sure, but no joy.
I have emailed the author of the app, to see what the deal is, and will post here if he replies.
Is there some type of Verizon 'protection' or 'security' software running by default that could be getting in the way? Any other ideas?
No responses from anyone else. This seems to be a built-in security "feature" of Chrome for Android, which prevents it from loading an HTML file from an External SD Card. I can't figure out any way around it.
I went ahead and copied the files to the GN3's internal memory:
files:///storage/emulated/0/PhotoWebsite
And I am then able to open the files without any difficulty in Chrome. I have kept the "Open in Browser" App, as it does add the option to open HTML files to a Browser directly from a File Manager, which comes in handy.
I have created a Bookmark for the link for ready access to it within Chrome, but weirdly, I have to long-press and select in Open in New Tab to get it to work. A simple tap, like any other Bookmark, doesn't work.
Fortunately, I have a lot of available Internal Memory, but I should be able to put the files on the External SD Card, and be able to open HTML files from it.
I am still interested in a way to do this, if anybody has any suggestions.
Ignore - duplicate entry. The forum seems to have a glitch here - every time I post, it warns me it can't post another within 20 seconds, even though I've only clicked it once.
Correct me if I'm wrong, but the .html file can also be opened in desktop programs like MS Word, right? Have you tried any programs like open office or QuickOffice?

Thanks for the reply.
There's nothing wrong with the file itself (nor any of those from my website), so yes, it can be open in other programs (including HTML Viewer in my Note 3). The problem, as I currently understand it, is that Chrome (and the default browser on the GN3 as well) has some type of security provision that prevents it from loading HTML files that are stored on an external SD card.
When I copied all of the files to the GN3's internal memory, a "pseudo" SD Card, they can be opened without any difficulty.
Why it is this way, I have no idea, nor if there is any way of circumventing it.
Hi DLCPhoto,
I see the last post here was December 22, 2013.
Have you come up with any solutions as of yet?
I am having the same experience even at this late date using Android 5.1.1 Lollypop in a Samsung Core Prime
Standing by . . .
Unfortunately, I never figured out a work-around. I just gave up and put the files I wanted on the Device's memory, where they can be readily accessed.
I'm still using that Note 3, and don't know if anything has changed with more recent versions of Android.
Sorry...
Hello, I've rooted my Nook Simple Touch using NookManager. It seems to be fine except that I have no browser, so cannot get on line. (I can't even access the Nook store because Barnes & Noble have dumped UK users like me.) I want to install NTGAppsAttack but since I can't go on line I presume that Google Market won't load unless NTGAppsAttack fixes the problem.
I'd be very grateful for help with this. Best regards, Caromcm

Searching these forums will yield several suggestions for multiple browsers that "work" (note quotes) on the Nook. If you download the apk for one of these, you should be able to install it with adb.

It may be the original Nook browser as there's a lot of Nook stuff in the history and the keyboard has no full stop - so it's impossible to type in any website address. A different keyboard, with full stop, appeared first (and I got into Ebay as an experiment) but I can't get back to this keyboard. I got onto Google, but couldn't sign in because I couldn't type the '.com'. There are all sorts of symbols, but no stop!
I think there must be some sort of conflict here which needs to be sorted out first. I'd be very grateful for a steer as I'm a complete novice in the Android world. I have a Android smartphone but only downloaded a couple of Google apps when I first got it and then just poked around and got things to work. - Caromcm

First, you can uninstall the old B&N browser. Locate the app in the system/app folder (you may need to set ReLaunch to see root folders). Or, you can just ignore it.
To sideload apps using ReLaunch (or a file manager app), drag the apk file via USB into a folder you have created on your SD card that you're using for storage. Then after disconnecting the USB, navigate to the folder from the file manager section of ReLaunch. Touch the apk and you should get a dialog that includes "install". I'm not too familiar with ReLaunch, but I believe you can uninstall by touching and holding on an apk file.
If you want GApps, of course, you need to run the package install you mentioned. Just a warning: a number of people have been having trouble with the sign-in process lately. Maybe they've been a little confused or maybe (more likely) Google is not too fond of dealing with these old devices. There is an older method for sign-in (and eventual Market access) that apparently does still work, but you can try what's described in the GAppsAttack posting and then if that doesn't work, try the older method [the method itself is a little ways down in the post I linked]
Also, based on my observations, you can no longer successfully select an app on your PC and expect to see it show up on your "phone" (which is how Google sees the NST). That used to work, but doesn't seem to any longer. So you really need to get Market working on the NST if that's how you intend to get apps. Otherwise, sideload.

p { margin-bottom: 0.25cm; line-height: 120%; } Thank you for this very helpful reply, Nmyshkin. With regard to GoogleApps, all I want is a way to download DRM books without tangling with ADE, which will not run on my Linux laptop. Google Market seems to be the answer. Last night I succeeded in getting into Google and registering with my gmail address, so this may help?
This morning in System/App I found HTMLViewer.apk and Browser.apk, hence the conflict and the 2 input screens. On the All Applications screen the browser is just called 'Browser', so perhaps this is the obstructive B&N one?
I did not find ReLaunch in System/App so I expect that I need to load it, or another file manager app. I did find some other apps which might be relevant: GoogleSearch.apk, GlobalSearch.apk, AffileDownloadService.apk, DownloadAdmin.apk, ApplicationProvider.apk, Packageinstaller.apk.orig. Is that last one disabled?
I cannot get into Root, and I'm not a Superuser, so these problems presumably need to be tackled.
I tried clicking on Amazon Appstore to see what I could download, but I got the message that it could not download 'because of a network connectivity error'.
My Nook now seems to have become unstable - when I close it I always find a different screen when I open it again, except when I close it on a book page.
I'd be very grateful for any suggestions. Meanwhile I'll look into downloading ReLaunch, or similar, onto my laptop. Best regards, Caromcm

You want to get rid of Browser.apk, but there should not be a conflict with HTMLViewer.apk.

Wait, did you say you rooted with NookManager? That should install ReLaunch by default so if you hit the "Home" quicknav "button" you should get a dialog for whether you want the B&N Home or ReLaunch. Or, install some other launcher if you have a preference and you'll get the dialog to select it. The problem with no launcher is that even installing a file manager won't do you any good because you will have no way to access the app without a launcher! That's why ReLaunch is included with NookManager.

OK, now we have an issue. Both should be taken care of with NookManager. It installs a copy of SU as well as enables side-loading. How are you looking at the files in system/app if you don't have root access??
So it sounds like the real problem is that you have not yet figured out how to launch ReLaunch (it's maybe not a system app? did you look in data/app?) so none of the rest of it is going to work for you.
I tried clicking on Amazon Appstore to see what I could download, but I got the message that it could not download 'because of a network connectivity error'.

Aha! So you have found the app drawer!!!!! That is part of ReLaunch Whew..... Alas, the Amazon App Store is dead on the NST and should be uninstalled. It always caused instability on my NST (see your remark below). So now your task to to figure out how to find the file or folder manager in ReLaunch. There I cannot help you. I know it's there because I've seen screen images. Try the menu button when on the app drawer. Perhaps something will show up. There has to be a way to navigate to the folder screen and to access settings so you can enable viewing of the root folders as well.

That should not happen, obviously. Since you haven't gone very far at this point you might just want to use NookManager to do a factory reset and try the whole process over again.

p { margin-bottom: 0.25cm; line-height: 120%; } Many thanks, again. I really don't have ReLaunch, I have Launcher (Launcher.apk in System/App). I've been using the Launcher file menu system. I've also been using the app drawer - didn't know that's what it's called. I've now deleted the Amazon App Store.
I've also deleted browser.apk and discovered that the input screen which actually had a full stop in fact belonged to that. HTMLViewer is just that, not a browser - should have realised. I need to get a browser installer into the right place. Should I drag the Opera Mobile installer from my laptop into the Root folder which is one of 14 folders at the top file level? I can open this, but it appears to be empty, which I interpreted as inaccessible except to superuser. Or should I put the installer into the top file level along with various init files?
When I click Superuser in the app drawer the screen just re-writes. No message.
How would I do a factory reset? Also, I have Calibre on this Nook and my laptop. Is it possible that Calibre has upset the applecart?

Wow...it's like we're not even talking about the same device. If you do not have Relaunch how can you have an app drawer? How can you see any folders except for B&N user folders? When I connect my NST via USB to my PC all I can see in the "Nook" directory is what B&N intended for me to see, despite the fact that the device is rooted. That's the way the USB interface is designed to work. How are you even running Launcher.apk? That old, primitive launcher that B&N left on there is useless.
So here's what is says in the original NookManager post:
Technical stuff:
The actual rooting function is minimal and as non-invasive as possible:
uRamdisk is patched to enable ADB
the internal database setting is changed to allow installation of non-market apps
the DroidSansFallback font is replaced with the updated font from jellybean to add support for extended characters
the su/Superuser binary/package is installed
Relaunch is installed
ADB Konnect is installed for enabling/disabling ADB over wireless
on systems running firmware 1.2+, the ModManager jars and package are installed
on 1.2+ systems, the PackageInstaller.apk from the 1.1.2 firmware is installed to resolve issues with package installers
and, finally, the Amazon appstore is installed just to have some easy way of downloading new apps. You can uninstall it using ReLaunch if you don't use it.

Relaunch, as little as I know about it, has a few screens. One of them is a folder browser, like a file manager. It can see the SD card if you have one inserted, as well as the actual Nook "hard drive"--but not at the root level unless you have enabled that in the settings for Relaunch.
System apps can be installed as you have described: just drag the apk file into the system/app folder and reboot. But you can't install other apps that way. The apk file needs to be processed via the package installer (or through ADB....another story). Hence the need for a folder browser of some sort such as is part of Relaunch.
I repeat, if you have an app drawer, that is, a screen with a bunch of icons on it that represent and will start apps when you touch them, then you have Relaunch. If so, then you need to find the other screen with the folders, because that's how you are going to install, for example, Opera Mobile, by placing the apk file in some folder or another (create one called "Downloads" or something) and then touching on the apk file to bring up the installer. Again, while looking at the app drawer try the "menu" button--that's the little soft "button" at the top of the screen next to the "back" button.
If you are convinced that there is no Relaunch (I still don't understand how you can see any folders?!), then you MUST do a factory reset and try the process again because anything else is just piling problems on top of problems.
I'm not going to ask how you got Calibre onto your NST because you should not have been able to do so with all the issues you are having.
The presence or absence of Browser.apk has nothing to do with the system default keyboard, which certainly contains a period.
To do a factory reset: turn off the Nook and insert the NookManager card you made. Turn the Nook back on and wait for NookManager to load up. Factory reset is either an option on the first screen (after the dialog about Wi-Fi) or is found under "Rescue".
Before you try again, check your software version number (or just look at what NookManager says at the top of the screen when it is loaded. You should have 1.2.1

Many thank for the valuable info. Yes, I do seem to have tripped into a parallel universe. Perhaps I now have a quantum Nook - complete with wormholes in the operating system!
The menu button in the app drawer doesn’t work. I get to the folder browser via the library button: this opens the SD card (I think I set it to do this) and I go up through the folder levels. I'm not exploring the file system via USB/laptop, I'm doing it direct on the Nook. I should be able to transfer the Opera Mobile apk file to the Nook SD card and thence to an appropriate folder on the Nook itself. It might be better to do a factory reset - but wouldn't I have to re-register? I don't think that would be possible now that B&N no longer support the Nook in the UK. My Nook is v1.2. I was using Calibre before I rooted.
Re ReLaunch - I've now set the right-hand physical buttons to go to the menu. This works as expected now, but originally I was in file manager mode and every time I tried out my change the word 'ReLaunch' popped up - first time I've seen it on the Nook. It wasn't a menu, just 'Relaunch' and two buttons, Information and OK. 'Information' just gave me a version number - v.1.38 - and OK just took me back to the previous screen. With hindsight I think Relaunch was asking me to OK the change. NB Now I've gone back to read mode the Nook seems to have stabilized.
When I deleted the Amazon Appstore and the browser, I just did a long press (I think) and got a menu including Delete. I didn't use ReLaunch because I couldn't access it. Can it only be accessed via System/Apps? I don't seem to have a facility to do a search through the file system.

I'm not going to ask how you got a Calibre app onto your Nook before rooting. Yes, you can copy the Opera Mobile apk file to the SD card and then use any sort of file manager/explorer to install it. If you want an ordinary file manager (since you have a sort of app drawer you should be able to launch it), I recommend an old version of ES File Explorer. It is among the apps I have bundled together that are hard to find which I have found useful on my NST. You can download the package here. In the settings for the app you can enable access to root folders.

It sounds like you really need a good launcher. The hidden one that's on the NST is pretty crippled. Many people like Relaunch because basically they use their Nooks to read and do little else. Relaunch was designed for that. If that sounds like you, one option to get a functioning/updated copy is to install Opera Mobile and use it to download/install Relaunch. Here's a link. Or you can download on a PC and transfer to the Nook to install.
When you install any new launcher you will get a dialog when you touch the "Home" quicknav "button" asking what you want to do. It's possible that in the past you had that for Relaunch and answered something different with the "always do this" checked and then it's nearly impossible to find the launcher again--unless you install a new one. I personally prefer a more traditional tablet approach and use ADW Launcher, but there are many other options. Almost anything has got to be better than what was hidden on the NST when B&N shipped it out (of course they never expected anyone would access it). I do not think launchers, in general, are system apps. My ADW is in data/app along with most installed apps. BUT, launchers do not typically appear in the app drawer (why would they?) so there is no way to start one except at the initial dialog when you try to access "Home" after installing a new launcher (or each time you access "Home" if you do not tick the "always do this").
I can understand now why you do not want to do a factory reset, seeing as how you are in the UK. It has been reported that running the NST without registering results in abnormal battery drain. I don't know whether that is correct, and there might be more than one way to set it up without registering, but it's a risk. That being the case, I can't stress enough how important it is to make backups frequently as you try to sort things out. Making a backup with NookManager is easy, but only one backup can exist on the SD card at a time. You can transfer backups to your PC when NookManager is running. So, for example, if you plug the USB cable in before you exit NookManager, you will actually be able to see the otherwise hidden backup folder and can copy the files to your PC. I usually make a folder with the date and include a small text file that describes what has been done since the previous backup. Keeping two or three backups on your PC can be a lifesaver if something that you try goes really wrong.

I think I've misled you about Calibre. I meant that I run Calibre on the laptop and had noticed a couple of Calibre files in the Nook filing system. I've just checked and found the're on the SD card.
Progress in understanding here, but no practical progress.
I put the Opera Mobile apk file on the Nook SD, but then found it couldn't be moved/copied onto the Nook itself. Do you think I could install direct from the SD - B&N seem to have set up a barrier. I also emailed various links to the gmail address I put onto the Nook, but the emails refuse to open. I think the Google stuff needs updating.
I re-enabled the B&N browser, but it keeps warning me that site certificates are out of date, even when I use addresses which work on my laptop. Occasionally something works.
Amongst t[/QUOTE]he galaxy of menus I found an option to 'Show all apps including this one'. I clicked and ReLaunch appeared in my apps drawer!

Yes, that's what I did - it was supposed to be reversible, but the trick didn't work.
I think I'll make another backup and try NTGAppsAttack. Might free up the email. Then I'll have a think about launchers.
Many thanks for all the useful suggestions. Will let you know how things go, but not tomorrow as I have other things I have to do.

Yes, Calibre stores little files on the SD card if you use it to move over books. I might add that simply dragging over the epub files seems to result in a smaller chunk of memory storage. Perhaps those Calibre files don't get updated (and larger) when you do that. At least that was my experience. And the NST can't use the Calibre information, in any case.
I install all my side-loaded apps from a folder I have on my SD card called "Downloads", so yes you can install an app from SD card--or should be able to do so.
If there was already a resident Gmail app in system/app it is probably useless. Even the one in GAppsAttack only functions for awhile and then you have to reinstall it to get it going again (and again....). Apparently a known issue but "fixed" versions do not run on the NST. You can try the small and simple e-mail app that is linked from here. That's what I use. It works simply and reliably with imap e-mail and functions just like you would expect Gmail to.
The problem with certificates has recently been addressed and is not a problem of the old (albeit largely useless) browser, but of the device itself and it can limit its access to, for example, Kindle books as well as various websites. When you get to the point where you want to deal with it, read the thread here (and the next few entries for some simplification).

Great! You're a mine of useful info - and, belatedly, I've just found the Thanks Button. I've also loaded Opera Mobile, which is working fine. In the process the email has been fixed too. I've copied all your links onto my Nook for future investigation. When I have time (next week) I'll run NGAppsAttack (making a backup first) and then I should be able to download books.
For clarification, it was Loader, not ReLoad which offered me the load options and an "Always do this" tick box after rooting. The action of the tick box was supposed to be reversible, but that trick didn't work. I still don't know where Loader fits in. Part of the Nook software? Part of ReLaunch? However, all works now, so I won't post any more into this thread as it's really about my browser problem. May thanks Nmyshkin.

Glad we got some things squared away. If you install the ES File Explorer I directed you to, it comes with an app manager. You can find the Loader, or Launcher or whatever (more likely, "Home") and cancel the default behavior from your "always do this" mishap.
Good luck.
