General recommendations for using Xperia Play in 2019? - Xperia Play General

basically I am taking of the dust of my xperia play after a few years... and I want to use it as a backup phone for social media in general (facebook, whatsapp, instagram, youtube) and some emulation and some old apk games.
The main problem after these years are limited internal storage space and compatibility.
- Is there any better rom or app that make it more usable?
- maybe make it "think" the SD card is the internal storage? It would fix many problems
- a 4.x android version rom, maybe?
- I would love to be able to use the touchpad in a n64 emulator or maybe make the controller recognized as a modern regular android game controller for other games, but no problem if not possible.
So, I would like to ask for recommendations to workaround these issues and make it usable again.
Thank you very much!
EDIT: I have a R800i model

i had been using the rom nexplay for a lot of time in my xplay, its 4.04 i think, no touchpads tho. you can use link2sd to use the sd as internal storage, but you need a fast card. as for social apps, if you have link2sd it could work, but nowday they are really heavy on the cpu and on the memory, so not sure how it would perform. the best rom is probably still stock debloated and with custom kernel

Good Evening!
Maybe, you can try to use a CM12 version suplied by Smokerman

If you tried this rom, please, share your experience.

Hello,
I have been using an Xperia Play lately and it is very difficult to get something to work because of the poor memory size available for applications.
I tried CM13 (Android 6 Marshmallow) via the Legacy Xperia team and it worked somehow. But unfortunatly when Google Services are installed, the phone becomes somewhat unusable even through the OS is set to take the SD card as internal storage. Maybe my SD card is not quick enough... I tried John GBAC emulator with a GBA rom (Pokémon Emerauld) and performances were poor.
I sure will try again this rom without Google Services if I can find a better alternative (i.e good light store that contains social app and stuff).
Now I am running the CM11 rom (also Legacy Xperia one) and performance are a bit better once the Play Store and Google Services were up to date. Still, the internal memory remains an issue and App2SD (or similar) is pretty much mandatory in order to install more than 2 apps. I didn't try emulators yet, I hope it will be better than on CM13. You should note that on those roms, Bravia Engine and XLoud doesn't seem to be implemented.
I also tried an ICS rom (I think it was Ice Cream Speed) that was OK but after a bit it started rebooting after 2min using the phone. Finally, you have the Gin2Kitkat rom under 2.3.7 (limited for app installation) but it looked to be the snappier experience I could find.
I am looking forward to try this phone on other roms without any Google Services to see if I can run something like RetroArch to play games on the go. I really enjoy the controller for emulators.

well, after a fair play with my DHD android device and coming from HD2 winmo, yes i have a good impression with android, it's better in many cases, but fail in many other essential cases too. not speaking about any visual, gaming, or any specific app here, cause mainly android have the power in this area, but we are speaking about native and essential issues:
1-in a platform where you have the option to have 32 gb as sdcard, i guess u have the right to full this sd card with apps, documents, mp3, movies, images or whatever. instead, of that, if you install more than 100 apps on the sd card (knowing that the htc devices comes preloaded with a bloatware of 165 apps, i guess 100 apps is nothing here) the device have a chance to not load properly the sd card apps, or start to have a massive lag (happened a lot of times).
2-i have a 16 gb sdcard, and now i have 8 gb free, so used 50% of the sd card, and the device have lagging symptoms.
so basically android is functioning better with less files and apps, when winmo have no effect whatever i have on my sdcard, the system will never lag according to sd file system, or the system will not lag to death whatever apps are installed on the sd card.
3-folder browsing applications is better handeled in winmo, like image gallery browsing, music, videos, support the folder browsing option better than android.
4-for now, my test are based on built in video player and mvideo player, and i can say movies have better smooth play on winmo.
5-winmo connect to pc with one single way (active sync) and provide, syncing files, internnet passthrough, exploring the disk files. on the other hand, each time u want to make a job in android, u have to change the way it connects to pc (internet passthrough, or disk drive or sync files) winmo can do all at the same time.
1. You install all those apps on the SD Card and each time you start one its always running, no wonder you experience lag.
2.Same as no.1
3. My experience with winmo and everything to do with it was horrid, it was completely laggy and it was a clean wipe. Folder browsing was hideous and so was everything else.
4. Movies definitely play smoother on android, I couldn't even get a video file to save on winmo, nevermind play it.
5. Why is there the need to use the phone as a disk drive, charge it, internet passthrough?
Definitely not the case for me.

To be honest I think your problem is just unfamiliarity with Android. After all, people get used to whatever they use everyday then, when they have to change, all you see at first is 'but this doesn't work like <insert old system here> ...'. ALL operating systems/phones/computers are ideal for someone but ALL of them have faults. As long as you can live with them then all is well. If it's a phone you have for 12/18/24 months the best situation is to make the most of the positives, rather than complain about all the negatives. Or sell it and get a new Winmo phone.

To topic, there's no way winmo do those things mentioned by original post better than android. My friend has Htc HD2, I sold it to him...lol Like someone said try learning the curve or sell the HDH.
most of the times peopels on board flame threads with opinions or sharing experiences. please try to undersntand that it's something to be discussed not flamed, and as i was expecting some negative replies, i also expect some positive and constructive discussions. and to go further, it's my third month with android, yes i'm new kind of, but fairly i have a good background in troubleshooting, developping, customizing... briefly i tried almost more than 1000 applications from marketplace (apps and games) i categorised and filters most of them, i also did select the best app in each field, and for those who said that 75 apps is a lot, let me tell you that it's just apps and not the games list, and 75 apps that are installed are very essential to be on the phone, and by the way all of them are on the phojne memory and i still have 750 mb for internal memory.
it's just that puttings more installed games on sd card may corrupt the start up of the apps, since android get dizzy loading bunch of them at starup, the thing that winmo dont have this prob, and saying that is not like saying i want to go back winmo, dont take it rude, but please stop acting like the guards on the (your favorite or your owned device) castle, things dont go like this.
in fact if you see that there is a solution, workaround, something to discuss or share, or even if you passed with this experience, please share it, that's what make the forum helpful and going forward.
yes guys i like android more than winmo (winmo is a dead OS anyway) and failed for long time, but for me i faced these problems in android, they maybe a problems for others, maybe not for you, and yes winmo handeled the above listed issues better than android, face it, so why not we discuss why it's better in winmo and how to enhace it (in workaround or developping something to fill the gap).
ex.: "why do i need to make the device as disk drive" cause it's helpfull to have the option of moving files btw device and pc, and browse it in astro or any other explorer at the same time, install apps, or preview images, no need to switch btw disk drive and htc sync or internet each time you need to do any task, for sure it's a better choise to have them all done at one selection sync.
why documents files (music, movies, images) on sdcard may slow the device, if you think it's a normal issue, and the device should start to lag normally if you have bunch of them, then let's ask why they gave us the freedom to have a 32 gb of sdcard (is it to fill it with only 4 gb in order to not lag the device) something wrong here, no? let's ask again, why winmo or iphone handle this issue better (mmm, is it something about handling file caching, file indexing, refreshing..) can we discuss it this way, can we try to figure it and maybe find a solution for now or wit for a android future solution (maybe honeycomb).
sorry if being harsh but please read well before a harsh replies and flame the post.
thank you for your understanding.
The limitations with the sd card you are talking about are not an android problem per se. It is a dual problem with device manufacturers failing to provide enough user accessible rom. The other prong is that developers design their apps to install straight to sd, to accommodate the aforementioned devices.
The dhd has no such limitation, 1gb is plenty for apps. I have 50 apps including some games, all have been moved to internal rom if not done so automatically. I don't get any lag at all.
Of course I can see how someone new to android may not know to move their apps off the sd and think their phone is laggy but this is an unfortunate side effect of Google offering manufacturers the freedom to run android on anything they wish.
Sent from my performance enhanced Desire HD.
Do you think the speed or "class" would have any effect on lag?
e.g. if you had lag on a class 2 card would you expect a class 6 to 10 to resolve this or would this have no effect.
Not that I have any lag problems at all, just curious

point #5 is true but its not a major problem i guess
personally i feel that android is what winmo should have been
win7 is a disaster and it'll remain that way, they've tried too hard to copy apple and will never succeed being a copycat
but coming back to the topic, i guess that the fundamental problem with android is that its java based and as a java developer i know for certain that its a pain in the ass to develop applications on java... i can't forsee myself building a java game especially one that runs off 3D because the number of objects and classes will grow its complexity exponentially
on the iphone we have games like street fighter, winmo has prince of persia
i doubt we'll be seeing such complex games on android anytime soon
I have something to add since I've had the chance to use both OSES.
Ever notice how YouTube has to re-download the video you're currently watching if you want to repeat it? Not only am I wasting bandwidth but I can't enjoy my videos in HD because my connection isn't fast enough.
WinMo YouTube app > Android YouTube.

[Q] Number of question; Games, Memory, gameloft

Hi all, first thread but feel its required.
I was a webos user before moving to Android, i jumped because i loved the concept, i love my xperia play for the main reason its a phone and a gaming one at that.
I had rooted my play using gingerbreak but since updating its gone ( i except that) I do not want to root 2.3.3. by unlocking the bootloader as i'm uncomfortable with the process.
Baring that in mind can any light be shed on my issues below?
My issues:
Everygame i have played seems to jerk, is anyone else experiencing this?
1. Games - I use a load of tools like free memory Cleaner, Accleaner etc, which all do a good job but my games still jerk. (is this a ram leak issue?)
Is there any apps better for this purpose.
2. Memory - its a problem ( i have over 25 games plus apps) i use Apps 2 SD which again does a good job however i have 37mb free on my internal memory.
Again any apps better for this purpose
3. Gameloft - I have many gameloft games (hate the system and the company but thats another thread) my issue is, is there a website which tells you the current version of each game?
Updates don't always pop up when starting a game, a few times I've had to reinstall a game to get an update (latest being Rainbow 6). I ask cause my version of Nova 2 which is 1.0.2 still does not work but i don't know if this is the latest version and i am receiving no pop up.
4. Play launcher - Seeing some videos of plays in america shows playstation 1 games in the xperia play launcher, is this possible in the uk? or is there an update coming?
would like this alot better.
Any help is much appreciated.

You may have a cheap memory card. You may want to buy a bigger and better one anyway.
Is there any apps better for this purpose.
2. Memory - its a problem ( i have over 25 games plus apps) i use Apps 2 SD which again does a good job however i have 37mb free on my internal memory.
I use the same app. There is a better one but you need to be rooted. I think it is called Titanium or something.
3. Gameloft - I have many gameloft games (hate the system and the company but thats another thread) my issue is, is there a website which tells you the current version of each game?
Market games can be updated through the market. Gameloft games update when you launch them.
Updates don't always pop up when starting a game, a few times I've had to reinstall a game to get an update (latest being Rainbow 6). I ask cause my version of Nova 2 which is 1.0.2 still does not work but i don't know if this is the latest version and i am receiving no pop up.

In Canada we have a PSX launcher called pocket. It looks like the Playstation one but is foe PSX games. It is very stupid to have 2 launchers.

[help] Make me LIGHTWEIGHT.

Hello, As you all probably know the space for install files, basic settings etc is an issue for the Xperia PLAY; Other, newer phones out there have better space for installing applications, settings and images.
I use my phone for everyday use, along side another (X-Play) for my work life, (I love seeing peoples faces when they realise (If I can paraphrase) "I can haz games Consoole") I use my main phone, which in this instance is from herein "Phone-A" for every purpose from listening to music whilst jogging/at the gym, Texting, calling, "pinging" on various chat programs, editing documents, looking at pictures, surfing the net to Games and even occasionally taking photos.
Phone-B however is used solely used for making phone calls, emails and texting. Which Isn't much of an issue as its solely used for Work. I replaced that dreaded Wildfire when I had the funds, thank god.
My issue is that on Phone-A I'm having "Insufficient space!" messages almost EVERY SINGLE DAY. I've done everything I can bar deleting apps that I Use on a regular basis (Games, Music player etc) heres a list of the applications installed below;
ROOTED, 16GB Card
Homescreen - Nemus Launcher - 2.73Mb
Games -
SIMS 3
BRUCE LEE
CRASH BANDICOOT
BIA2
MODERNCOMBAT2
DRAG RACING
BIA2 FREE HD+ (??)
GT FREE+ HD
BLOOD AND GLORY
R6 HD
BFBC2
ASPHALT 6
NFS HOT PURSUIT
GTA3 10YR HD
ZOMBIEVILLE
MINECRAFT
Music - MIXZING - 8.11Mb
Web - DOLPHIN HD - 11.94Mb
I'm Rooted and not afraid to use it, if you can let me know of some files and applications to remove (Preferably non of the games, apart from GT,ZOMBIEVILLE & BIA) I don't mind doing it.
If you can also give me an alternative to the home screen, music player and webbrowser which are lightweight and yet still have full functionality that would be great! Music is a big part of my life, headphones go everywhere with my (I travel alot) I spend alot of time in the desert (Afg'n, iRagg) so these phones are sturdy and yet still VERY powerful in there capabilities.
I know theres alot of games but Hey, its a gaming phone why not game on it?
I have however removed some pre-installed crap that came on it but now I'm looking to lightweight my kit as I do my full kit when I'm working (I work in Close Protection, so a good phone is essential )

For the love of God, man... move them ****s to SD!
Also learn basic ADB navigation so you can move more to your SD card with the setInstallLocation 2 command.
Then check out THIS SAFE LIST so you can debloat your phone.
Do you have 2.3.3? If so, ditch that **** for 2.3.4. It's a difference as drastic as having a base of 250MB compared to 2.3.3's 180MB. It saves you a lot of pain in the ass dalvik-cache insanity, and FTF installers are too easy to use to take any BS.
With this checklist knocked out:
• Get FW 2.3.4
• ADB setInstallLocation 2
• Root
• Debloat
I've been able to cram 205 apps on this puny 400MB internal storage phone, and still have 140MB left.
Holy God damn, i'm running 2.3.2 I didnt even check :/
I just downloaded ZEAM which is 325Kb, which I'm happy with. But the above listed files, err Dolphin and Mixzing.. Err that is on Card!
I've DEBLOATED, Rooted but what is this ADB setinstall2? Is it moving apps from Phone to SD, like I can do in SuperManager?
If I update to 2.3.4 will I loose root?

ADB setinstall2 moves apps to SD automatically when installing i think
You will lose root if you use flashtool to update but OTA (over the air) you wont, even if you do lose root you can get it back easily using superoneclick
If your so worried about space why don't you partition 1gb off the card and use that for apps using Link2SD from the market, that saves phone memory and you'll never have to worry about space error messages again
I'll do a partition in a while, but at the moment I'm doing an OTA update.
I just had a Sh*t scare, looked down at my phone (On charge) and the blue update bar had disapeered and then the screen went black. Its back now though..
I always go with OTA, never touch flashtools unless I know what I'm truely doing (Give me a games console or PC any day!!)
Right so I've tried 3 times now Im getting a "Software could not update" message and its still not doing F'all So im stuck on 2.3.2 untill I can figure out why...
You probably deleted a system app/file. It won't update if that's the case. Just use flashtool. Get the .42 firmware put it in the firmware folder in flash tool, put phone into flash mode, flash, done. Easy
I ended up using the official Sony companion thingy bob, one word for this situation.
SNAFU.
Lost ROOT, added all sorts of crap included FIFA, star battalion, support etc ahhhh FUBAR.
Flash tool it is then if it can root..
EDIT:: I CAN HAZ R00T! http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1312859, done done done! Thanks, Cool guys
Well done, pat on the back
Gratz to figuring it out. However, all this could be avoided in the future if n00bs would actually check out the threads already posted to see what options they have before posting. Just sayin'.

How do I get the most out of the device?

So, I finally got back into my Xperia Play, but I have a rooted verizon version that was formally one of the more locked down ones before it was converted. I removed all the bloatware but sadly its still slow as a snail. I wanted to use it as a great media and gaming device, but its slow.
I disabled all google services (Because I simply don't use or need them, but I kept backups just incase) and I removed all the pre installed Verizon garbage (Especially VCast) but again, slow. Are there any ideas on what I can do to get the most out of my xperia? Its a really nice device and I want to make it even greater. I am looking for the following suggestions and ideas:
- Alternate Apps (Alternates to the stock Gui and google services are ideal)
- Alternate roms
- Games that are GOOD that make use of the xperia play gamepad
Ideally all suggestions are from people who have an Xperia Play and know how the games/apps/guis/roms/etc perform. Thank You!
If it helps at all I am running Android 2.0.4 I believe.
well get urself a speed rom, i m using xperia nxt gaming. using doomkernel for some unknown reason lupus is getting me boot loops sadly.
Hello guys,
I am still (!) using the Xperia Play as my main phone (!!!), with the stock GB rom. It's sometimes difficult, but I'm holding on. No real alternative anyway...
So I'd like to flash with one of the lightest GB custom roms possible, cause I'm fed up of my phone being so sluggish, having not enough ram (multitasking is terrible).
HOWEVER, this is my main phone : I need to keep the ability to send emails, messages, make phone calls, use the agenda with exchange active sync, access to google play, etc... Well, the basic phone use. I'm interested in NXT gaming, but I'm afraid it removed to many functions and core apps that I need...
=> Could you please advise me with some GB custom roms that are super light BUT still keep the basic phone functionnalities ?
Thanks and regards,
I'll bump this thread. i have a locked down roger r800a and all the super one click tool link is dead. and zerge rush is not working. i want to flash a custom rom but right now with the dead links and i am stuck with stock. playing a lot of snes and psx.

Xperia Play can play Netflix fine with LineageOS

Hi there with the Legacy Xperia LineageOS Testing build i got wonderfully Netflix working
on the Xperia Play
see in this Video(Changed Sound in Youtube because my Audio Recording was horrible)

You can download the Image from this Post:

Many Thanks to the Legacy Xperia Team for this wonderfully LineageOS for this Phone.
All work exept Bluetooth
wow what version of lineage is it? hows gaming performance? i gave away my last xperia play( i had 4 at a point) one month ago cause i got a moto z2 with the game pad...but i still love the xplay!
Hi sorry for my Delay with the Answer.
It is Lineage 14.1 Nougat.
The E-Psxe Performance is better than in the Legacy Xperia 4.44 Images.
Telegram,Whatsapp,YalpStore(slim Playstore Alternative),
Netflix,GLTools(Chainfire3D Alternative for newerOS) and others work fine.
I will test it with PPSSPP and StarTrekTimelines next Time.
It was difficult to install because my Windows10 have many Driver Problems with the Fastboot Drivers.
And you should use a A1 Micro SD Card...
...because the OS is on this SD Card.
It work all exept Bluetooth and the AnalogNubs.
For my playing Psx Rpgs are the Analog Nubs not that important.
greetings from Germany.
Glad people are still using this device. Is this device still usable for basic taskts in 2019?
Which custom ROM do you recommend? I am looking for one which is the lightest, fastest and uses least system resources and RAM.
Mostly the Rom is not the real Problem.
This Phone is definly to slow for GoogleServices like:
-the big Playstore
-Google Play Services
-and other Google Things.
I simple recommend to:
-root the Device
-deinstall all Things what you personaly not need:
For me Things like:
Calculator,Calendar,SpeechRecorder,Google Things,Themes,PicoTTS and big Memoryhungry Launchers
After this i installed my important Things:
-Yalp Store(Small Apk for Download Apks directly from Google)
With Yalp Store you can make easily Updates when you want.
-Telegram Messenger
-Whatsapp Messenger,
-EsTaskManager(look on an older Version withoud Ads)
-Vlc Player
-Sms/mms and Phone Apps
-Epsxe (work wonderfully exept Nubs..played Grandia on it)
-GLTools(its like Chainfire3D but for newer OS)
I am with Messengers UptoDate
So i can:
Phone, writeSMS,Telegram&Whatsapp Messaging with working Camera for Photos...
...and the Importantest Thing ...Gaming PSX Rpgs.
I stillt search for an good Snes and GBA Emulator.
Maybe PPSSPP will work with Mana Khemia
...o i have Drastic paid..maybe it work fine too for Dreamcast.
LineageOS Install was bit difficult but it work realy fine on an A1 SD Card and i can use normal Headphones because Bluetooth is not working with this Image.
Edit:
I do use a very small Launcher named Zeam Launcher.
Edit Edit:
Oops Drastic is for Nds
Is anyone aware of where the sources can be gotten from I’ve only found up to 13 on their GitHub
